Opis:
This paper aims to assess the influence of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on the accrual-based earnings management patterns in non-financial business groups in the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE). This study contributes to the existing literature by considering earnings manipulation behaviours in assessing the reporting data quality, both in consolidated financial statements of business groups and individual financial statements of parent undertakings. The research methods are based on the Modified Jones Model with the simultaneous separation of individual subcategories of accruals via cross-sectional analysis and time-series data approach (separately for each business group). Empirical findings supported the presumption that earnings manipulation schemes in the SARS-CoV-2 transitional (2020) and crisis (2021) periods differed statistically compared to the previous 2019 and 2020 years, respectively. Moreover, this article proved that the company‘s potential financial distress could imply accrual-based earnings management behaviours and moderate the association between the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and earnings manipulations activities. Finally, the obtained results confirmed that although business groups have an expanded set of balance sheet policy instruments, the quality of earnings reported in the individual financial statements of parent undertakings and the consolidated financial statements of business groups were similar during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

The present study examines the impact of earnings management on financial stability and reporting transparency among Shariah and Shariah-non-compliant firms in India from 2008 to 2023. The Study uses Kothari and Roychodhury models to estimate earnings management proxies. Earnings manipulation and bankruptcy of the sample firms were estimated using Beneish’s M-score and Altman’s Z-score models. The Study reveals that compared to non-Shariah firms, the Shariah-complaint firms are less prone to earnings management and bankruptcy, and it was also found that they are more transparent in reporting their results. Overall, the study confirms that more than a religious indexation, Shariah screening is effective in maintaining ethical conduct of business practices that enhance the protection of investors. The findings of this study aid managers in policy formulations, and it will be helpful for potential investors in making investment decisions based on Shariah principles.

Aim/purpose - This paper analyzes the role of Benford's law in the detection of earnings management in Poland. Previous research that uses Benford's law does not split the sample into a fraud and a control group; however, this method is used in logistic regression and data mining analysis. Design/methodology/approach - The sample comprises 126 observations of Polish non-financial companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange for the years 2010-2021. The author uses first, second, and first-two digits analysis as a proxy for earnings management detection. Findings - The results indicate that fraudulent companies have different deviations in the digits than control firms. Accordingly, the statistical test results indicate that control companies have weaker conformity with the Benford distribution than fraudulent companies. Research implications/limitations - The study sample is limited to 126 observations, which is due to the small number of listed firms that received a monetary fine from the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (UKNF Board) for violation of IAS/IFRS principles related to their financial statements during the study period. Originality/value/contribution - The author offers a significant contribution to the accounting literature by proposing the separation of fraudulent and control observations in Benford analysis due to differences in the deviations of digits. Also, analyzing the full sample may lead to the identification of inappropriate areas for further auditor analysis.

Opis:
This study examines the consequences of the COVID-19 turbulence on the informativeness of financial reporting. Using data from non-financial public companies in Poland, our evidence documents the evolution of accrual and real earnings management during the pandemic period. We estimate earnings quality with cross-sectional models, observing abnormal accruals, abnormal cash flow from operations, abnormal discretionary expenditures and abnormal production costs. We contribute to the debate on earnings management during financial crises. Specifically, discretionary accruals declined significantly during the crisis. This suggests companies were less eager to inflate earnings via accruals. Polish firms also seemed to be more inclined to adopt the ‘big bath’ strategy to inflate future income. Additionally, the research provides support for predictions that real earnings management gained importance during the turbulence when the total effect of boosting income through real transactions was significant. It suggests that during the COVID-19 crisis companies based their strategies more on the probability of being detected, rather than on the cost of such activities. The study adds to the debate on the qualitative characteristics of earnings as key accounting information and its importance in corporate finance, issues that cannot be overestimated from the perspective of company stakeholders.
Niniejsze badanie dotyczy oceny konsekwencji zawirowań na rynku wywołanych pandemią COVID-19 dla informacyjności sprawozdawczości finansowej. Jakość zysków została oszacowana za pomocą modeli przekrojowych, umożliwiających ocenę dyskrecjonalnych korekt memoriałowych, dyskrecjonalnych operacyjnych przepływów pieniężnych, dyskrecjonalnych kosztów uznaniowych i dyskrecjonalnych kosztów produkcji.

Aim/purpose – Higher compensation and increased share ownership are believed to drive fewer earnings management. Therefore, the study examines the moderating impact of share ownership on the relationship between executive compensation and earnings management of listed Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach – Panel Least Square regression and Stata 13 were used for the estimation. The secondary data source was employed and extracted from the banks’ published financial statements covering the period from 2007-2018. Postestimation tests, including normality tests of standard error, heteroscedasticity, and multicollinearity, were carried out to validate the outcome. Executive compensation variable is represented by Chief Executive Officer Pay (CEO Pay), Board Chairman’s compensation, and the highestpaid director, while executive share ownership represents the mod-erator variable. Chang et al. (2008) model was used to proxy earnings management. Findings – The findings revealed that CEO Pay increases the banks’ level of earnings management, while after moderation with executive share ownership; CEO pay decreases the possibilities of earnings management by banks. Compensation to Chairmen of the banks decreases the level of earnings management of banks. However, an increase in share ownership of the board with an increase in compensation to chairmen of banks’ boards increases the earnings management practices of the management of the banks. Research implications/limitations – The findings imply that the executive ownership interest should be made to align with that of the minority shareholders following an increase in their stake so that they can act in the overall best interest of the owners. The study is limited to only the banking sector and some specific executive compensation variables. Originality/value/contribution – The utilization of the highest paid director variable and use of share ownership as a moderator between executive compensations and earnings management.

Opis:
Research background: Audits are intended to ensure the reliability of financial statements, as this is fundamental for different stakeholders. However, both auditor tenure and audit fees could affect the earnings management of companies. In 2014, the European Union established a mandatory audit firm rotation policy. In the United States, although there is still no mandatory regulation in this regard, there has been a large public debate over the advisability of this policy. Another unresolved controversy is whether audit fees determine audit quality. Purpose of the article: The aim of this research is to study the effect of auditor tenure and audit fees on earnings management, i.e., to determine whether a longer-term relationship between the auditor and the audited company, as well as higher audit fees, reduce the audited company's earnings management, thereby making the financial statements more reliable for stakeholders and increasing the quality of the audit report. In addition, the Big Four auditing companies in the United States were analyzed in order to determine the influence of corporate culture. Methods: A sample of companies listed in the S&P 500 stock market index was employed for the analysis, covering the years 2012 to 2021, resulting in a dataset comprising 3,010 observations. To examine the research hypotheses while mitigating the potential bias from omitted variables, a linear regression analysis was conducted using panel data with fixed effects regression. To enhance the robustness of the results, winsorized variables were also employed. Findings & value added: Overall, the results confirm that the quality of financial statements improves as auditor tenure increases, and so implementing a mandatory auditor rotation may not be in a company’s best interests. The results also support the market segmentation theory, as higher audit fees are aligned with higher quality financial reporting. Furthermore, by analyzing the Big Four audit companies in the US, it is shown that the influence of audit fees and auditor tenure on earnings management also depends on the internal aspects of the particular audit firm, especially its ethical culture. In sum, US policymakers should neither set limits on audit fees nor enforce a mandatory audit firm rotation similar to that of the EU.

The reported values of the financial result at various levels of the company's operations are an important source of information for various stakeholder groups of textile companies. However, due to its accrual character, financial result is a category highly susceptible to intentional increasing (lowering), in line with the diversified premises of the management staff. The objective of the paper is to investigate the relationship between the profitability of textile companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange and the directions and scale of accounting-type earnings management. The obtained results of empirical research indicate that in the sample data of hand, there are statistically significant relationships between discretionary accruals and gross margin and return of assets coefficients. This remark may be important, among others, for stock exchange investors who have been attracting the attention of the WSE-clothes sector index for years due to the above-average rate of return.

Opis:
Purpose – The article investigates the patterns of asset impairment recognition in search of signs of “big bath” earnings management practices across an internationally diversified sample of public companies. It also elucidates the incentives that may underlie such practices and explores possible safeguards embedded in the existing corporate governance mechanisms. Design/methodology/approach – The article applied static panel and binary logit models to an international firm-level panel dataset of 1045 public companies observed between 2003 and 2018. Findings – Our empirical results suggest that recognition of asset impairment has no determinate impact on earnings volatility. Investigating the possibility of “big bath” earnings management practices, the authors found no impact of asset impairment recognition on total senior executive compensation in firms, which pay performance-based remuneration. The quality of corporate governance has appeared to impact the firms’ intertemporal proclivity to recognize asset impairment with those having the more entrenched and management-controlled boards being more likely to time impairment recognition by delaying it during exceptionally good and exceptionally bad years. While generally unlikely, recognition of asset impairment in a period with a recorded negative operating performance is found to be closely associated with key executive departures. Originality/value – The article corroborates the salient role of corporate governance mechanisms in shaping the intertemporal patterns of asset impairment recognition. The possible remedies to the phenomenon should be derived therefrom.

The purpose of the article/hypothesis: This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the theoretical and empirical literature regarding tax-induced earnings management. In particular, the association between anticipated tax changes and earnings management is of interest to the authors. Methodology: This paper uses a systematic literature review to achieve its research objectives. Results of the research: The presented research is mostly devoted to tax rate decreases and focuses on accrual-based earnings management methods. In anticipation of a tax rate change, companies shift their income from a high to a low tax rate period. Moreover, the probability of tax-induced earnings management is higher in case of extreme changes in the tax rate, larger prospects for tax savings as well as in case of private firms. This paper identifies several inconsistencies and gaps in the current literature, emphasizing that the connection between firms’ characteristics, the level of book-tax conformity and the practice of earnings management remains unclear.

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of the present paper was to gauge the extent of the impact on earnings management derived from the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) 17 as well as detecting whether the impact will be similar in different European “Insurance” and “Reinsurance” industries. Design/Method/Approach: To provide empirical evidence that earnings management is more frequent in some countries and less frequent in others by means of a statistical analysis, a sample of European listed “Insurance” and “Reinsurance” companies in the period of 2018-2020 was observed. The Jones Model was applied. Findings: This study concerns the implementation of a new principle, written to discipline the accountancy of insurances contracts, and its consequences must be carefully analyzed and monitored by regulators, as well as correctly adopted by managers, as the determined revenues could have an impact on the pre-existing earning management practices. Theoretical Implications: The paper of the present research also concerns the predictions about the behavior of managers that can be foreseen considering the agency theory; therefore, knowing ex-ante in which industries earnings management has a high impact, provides the option to foresee the hypothetical moves of the managers in the implementation of IFRS 17. Practical Implications: The analysis demonstrated that the “Insurance” industry is impacted by earnings management practices to a greater extent than the “Reinsurance” industry. These results should be analyzed simultaneously with the results from by the “Big Four” analysis concerning the impact of the introduction of IFRS 17. Originality/Value: Specifically, companies belonging to two sectors were selected: “Insurance” and “Reinsurance”. The statistical analysis brought to light that earnings management practices are “commonly adopted” in the “Insurance” and “Reinsurance” industry, which is consequently highly impacted by the introduction of IFRS 17. Research Limitations/Future Research: The total number of observations is high, all companies analyzed belong to only two industries. The analysis could be extended to a greater number of industries and companies in order to provide a more complete overview of the presence and the persistence of earnings management policies in different typologies of European financial listed companies.

The main objective of this study is to determine whether acquiring firms decision to manage their earnings is related to post-acquisition performance. Particularly, the authors examine whether real earnings management through sales accrual management, sales manipulation, over production and discretionary expenditures affect firms' ability to earn higher financial performance after mergers and acquisitions. The researchers collected 259 firm-year observations of financial data from 2006 to 2017 amid Mergers and Acquisitions deals in Indonesia. The results indicate that acquiring company’s decision to manage its earnings through accrual management has a significant positive impact on firm’s subsequent post-acquisition performance. On the other hand, real earnings management through overproduction activities also significantly increases firms’ post-mergers and acquisition performance. However, the study reveals that real earnings management activities through discretionary expenditures and sales manipulation do not yield higher post-acquisition performance. This study's novelty lies in how financial accounting gimmicks prior to corporate strategy implementation (mergers and acquisitions) may yield higher (or lower) economic performance. The current research also provides some potential avenues for further investigations.

Some of the available research suggests a mitigating role for institutional investors who can serve as external monitors and thus reduce earnings' management activities which could have a negative impact on the company's value. eTh results obtained from the basic model conrfimed neither the hypothesis about the inuflence of institutional ownership on REM, nor the hypothesis about the existence of a signicfiant publication bias. This paper explores the association between the maturity of short term debt and real earnings management in the context of an emerging market. We use a panel dataset of listed firms in Vietnam over the period from 2009 to 2017 and employ conventional methods for panel data analysis. Our work contributes by documenting a non-linear relationship between short-term debt maturity and manipulation of earnings. In particular, businesses prefer to refrain from manipulating earnings at low short-term debt maturity levels but are likely to manage them at higher short-term debt maturity levels. Under a battery of robustness evaluations, this result remains unchanged. This means that investors/lenders of firms should be vigilant with the information recorded on financial statements because managers can manage corporate earnings, especially at high short-term debt levels.

Opis:
Research background: A company?s earnings are one of the main determinants of investment decisions on the stock market. Thus, the reliability of disclosed financial information is crucial for the efficient allocation of capital. Unfortunately, reported earnings are an economic category susceptible to manipulation. This problem grows especially in the case of an initial public offering (IPO), as there is significant information asymmetry. Purpose of the article: The main aim of the paper is to assess the persistence of earnings reported by companies in the IPO process and to empirically identify financial characteristics associated with persistence of earnings. The usefulness of financial information is directly related to the issue of earnings quality. Therefore, this paper contributes to the stream of study on the quality of financial reporting of new stock companies. Methods: I employ a simple single-factor regression model to recognize the earnings persistence in new stock companies. Pre-IPO earnings are the explanatory variable. Then, I use multiple regression analysis to identify factors that influence this metric of reported earnings quality. Findings & value added: Using a sample of companies from stock exchange markets in Central and Eastern Europe (i.e., the Warsaw Stock Exchange, the Bulgarian Stock Exchange, the Bucharest Stock Exchange, the Belgrade Stock Exchange, the Prague Stock Exchange) that went public between 2010 and 2018, I find that, generally, pre-IPO earnings hold higher persistence compared to earnings reported in the year of the IPO. Profitability seems to be a factor that significantly influences this feature. Thus, the results contribute to corporate theory and practice facing insufficient empirical evidence on the issue of sustaining pre-IPO profitability in the long term, additionally putting these concerns in the context of the economic environment of European emerging stock markets.

Opis:
Research background: Business profit and its stable development are key performance indicators. Many enterprises performed earnings manipulation, either upward or downward, according to the current business and macroeconomic situation, as well as time. These activities may interrupt the stationarity of time series. This article focuses on the transport enterprises, and the assessment of bonds in their earnings. Purpose of the article: The target of the article was to identify the occurrence of non-stationary and its unit root in the EBITDA of transport enterprises for each country in V4 during the period of 2010-2019. Methods: The stationarity and unit roots in time series were tested by the Kwiatkowski, Phillips, Schmidt, and Shin tests and the Augmented Dickey-Fuller based on the samples of 470 Slovak, 405 Czech, 774 Polish, and 1,056 Hungarian. The behavior of earnings manipulation (the first cause of non-stationarity) was indicated by the Modified Jones model. Additional causes for non-stationarity were confirmed by the regression analysis, including factors such as the GDP, unemployment rate, average monthly gross wage, and the Ease of doing business index. Findings & value added: The non-stationarity in the time series of EBITDA was disclosed for each country in the V4 region. Earnings management was discovered to be the cause of this erratic development. Thus, the value-added for the authorities and auditors is to show the association between non-stationary and creative accounting. In addition, purposeful downward manipulation in the transport sector occurs, not upward, which is typical in general. The methodology used in the study may be applied cross-sectorally in emerging countries. The labelling of specific macroeconomic variables depending on the country offers enterprises the opportunity to focus on factors with a crucial influence on their existence and activities.
