In 2017 excavations were started on the fortification in Porębek, Kętrzyn district, site 3. Two excavations were performed during the work along the NE-SW axis (Figure 3). Trench 1/2017 (measuring 10 x 5 m) was opened within the “upper castle” – it included the area from the top of the rampart located on the NW side of this area and part of the courtyard. Trench 2/2017 (measuring 10 x 3 m) was delineated within the “lower castle” – it encompassed the courtyard from its SE edge and was perpendicular to the ditch. A total area of 80 square meters was uncovered. The interesting remains of a 13th-century building of the two-part stronghold were discovered. The source materials suggest that this place was inhabited earlier – in the Early Iron Age and in the Early Middle Ages. The stratigraphy seems to indicate large scale construction work, during which time the terrain was com�pletely transformed. The discovery at the foot of the upper castle, in the Guber river valley, was extremely valuable.

In 2017, the excavation of the fortifications in Pasym, Szczytno district, was continued. During this time three trenches were excavated (Figure 2). Trench 1/2017 (measuring 15 x 5 m) was laid out in the western part of the fortification, partly on the edge, partly on the slope descending from the west towards the lake. Trench 2/2017 (measuring 15 x 5 m) was located on the eastern slope of the fortification. Trench 3/2017 (measuring 5 x 5 m) was located in a dip situated to the south-east of the fort. The study encompassed an area of 1.75 acres. During the excavations, unusually interesting remains within the courtyard of the stronghold were discovered. Earlier obser�vations concerning the fortification of the site were also confirmed. The powerful defence system has no analogies in contemporary Prussian territories. Particularly valuable were the layers of accumulated deposits dating from the Early Iron Age and the Early Middle Ages.

In 2018, excavations at the stronghold in Pasym in the Szczytno district continued (Figure 1). They were mainly concentrated on the area within the stronghold. Three excavations were carried out (Figure 2). Trench 1 (15 × 5 m) was situated in the western part on the extension south of Trench 1 from 2017. Excavation 2 (5 × 5 m) was located in the north-west part of the stronghold, on the slope descending towards the lake. Trench 3 (2 × 2 m) was located at the foot of the stronghold on the lake side. In total, the excavated area was 1.29 ar. Particularly noteworthy was the discovery of two large features (4 and 13) of a residential character. The results of previous studies clearly indicate that buildings of this type were located along the edge of the inner area of the stronghold. A large number of finds was recovered during the excavations: 5,082 ceramic fragments, 11,559 animal bone fragments and 121 artefacts.

Interest in Ostrów Lednicki started in the mid-19th century. In 1858–1874, information was gathered about its stone buildings, burials, rampart construction, bridges, and numerous other finds. On 12th March 1930, Ostrów Lednicki was entered into the Register of Historical Monuments. Today, a team of archaeologists working on the island discovers new data and processes the materials found (numerous monographs have been written about the discoveries). In 1982, a team for interdisciplinary studies on Ostrów Lednicki and its settlement complex was appointed. In 1989, the journal ‘Studia Lednickie’ (‘Lednica Studies’) was created, followed in 1991 by the publishing series entitled Biblioteka Studiów Lednickich (Library of Lednica Studies). In 1988, the Lednica Landscape Park was created with the view to protecting the monuments on the island and the landscape in the areas around Lake Lednica. New branches and specialist laboratories were established: the Greater Poland Ethnographic Park, the Giecz Early Piast Stronghold Archaeological Reserve, the Grzybowo Stronghold Archaeological Reserve, and the Archaeological Laboratory on Ostrów Radziński. The Museum organises exhibitions in Poland and abroad. It is also a scientific research institution, which popularises knowledge by publishing prospectuses, guides and brochures, producing films, offering museum lessons, and organising mass events.

Celem badań było przeanalizowanie struktury wykorzystania zwierząt gospodarskich i dzikich do konsumpcji przez średniowieczne społeczności ośrodków osadniczych Pomorza Zachodniego. Badania przeprowadzono na pokonsumpcyjnym materiale osteologicznym pochodzącym ze stanowisk archeologicznych Pomorza Zachodniego. Przeanalizowano 444 113 szczątków kostnych ssaków domowych i 5 923 dzikich. Ponadto rozpoznano 13 659 szczątków ptaków oraz 11 726 szczątków ryb. Obecność szczątków gadów i małży była znikoma. Wśród gatunków zwierząt domowych zdecydowanie dominują szczątki hodowlanych zwierząt rzeźnych. Pozostałości ssaków dziko żyjących stanowiły około 1%. Spośród szczątków zwierząt domowych, pozostałości kostne konia, psa i kota, traktowane jako niekonsumpcyjne, stanowią około 2% mniej. Szczątki kostne konia stanowią w analizowanym materiale około 1% ogólnej liczby pozostałości zwierząt domowych. Na wszystkich analizowanych stanowiskach najliczniej reprezentowana jest świnia. Jej szczątki stanowią ponad 67% ze wszystkich gatunków rzeźnych oraz trzykrotnie więcej niż szczątków bydła i ponad sześciokrotnie więcej niż kości owiec i kóz. W analizowanym zbiorze pozostałości kostnych zwierząt rzeźnych kości bydła stanowią ponad 22%. Szczątki kostne małych przeżuwaczy stanowią niewielki odsetek kości zwierząt domowych, nieco ponad 10%, i w zasadzie są one pozostałościami owiec. Szczątki kostne zwierząt dziko żyjących reprezentują 17 gatunków. Podzielono je na dwie podgrupy, z których pierwszą stanowią pozostałości zwierząt łownych (ponad 92%). Wśród nich wyraźnie dominują szczątki jelenia. Jest ich ponad 67%, ale ustalono, że w tej masie również wiele fragmentów poroży ze śladami cięć i obróbki rzemieślniczej. W pewnym stopniu odnosi się to też do szczątków kostnych sarny. Znaczny udział w zbiorze szczątków kostnych zwierząt konsumpcyjnych stanowią kości dzika (ponad 16,8%), sarny i zająca (łącznie 12,8%) oraz tura i łosia (łącznie 3,08%). Druga podgrupa obejmuje przede wszystkim zwierzęta, na które polowano ze względu na ich skóry i futra, to jest niedźwiedzia, wilka, lisa, żbika, kunę, wydrę, fokę, borsuka, bobra i wiewiórkę. Ich szczątki kostne stanowią ponad 6,8% z ogólnej liczby stwierdzonych na stanowiskach wczesnośredniowiecznego Pomorza Zachodniego.
The study aimed at analysing the exploitation of farm and wild-living animals as in the consumption of early mediaeval human communities inWestern Pomerania based on osteological materials from archaeological sites. In total, 444 113 domestic mammal bones, 5 923 wild mammal bones as well as13 659 bird bones, 11 726 fish bones and single reptile and mollusc remains were identified. Among the bones of domestic mammal species, those from slaughter livestock (cattle, pig and sheep/goat) definitely prevail. Horse, dog and cat remains, treated as non-consumption ones, constitute about 2%, with horse ones clearly prevailing in this group, constituting about 1% of the bone material of domestic animals. In all analysed sites, pig bones are represented most abundantly. They constitute almost 68% and are thrice as numerous as cattle bones and over six times more abundant than sheep/goat ones. In this respect, bone materials from Wolin and Mścięcino with pig bones reaching even 71–72% deserve particular attention as this is an exceptional and unparalleled situation in early mediaeval bone assemblages from other archaeological sites in the area of the southern Baltic coast. Cattle bones constitute more than 22%, while those of small ruminants slightly more than 10%, belonging mostly to sheep. Bone remains of wild-living mammals, constituting slightly more than 1% of the mammal material, are represented by 17 species. They were divided into two sub-groups, with the first one comprising such game species like wild boar, red deer, roe deer, aurochs, elk and hare (more than 92%) which, apart from skins, furs and bones, yield meat as well. Red deer remains clearly prevail among them (more than 67%) but there are many antler fragments with cut and antler-working marks, this referring to a certain degree to roe deer ones, too.Wild boar bones (16.8%) as well as roe deer and hare ones (12.8% in total) constitute a considerable percentage, while those of aurochs and elk (about 3.1%) are the fewest. The second sub-group includes animal species which were above all hunted for their skins and furs, i.e. bear, wolf, fox, wildcat, marten, otter, seal, badger, beaver and squirrel. Their remains constitute more than 6.8% of the total number of these bones. A separate category within this group is few rat bones found solely in assemblages from large urban complexes (Wolin and Szczecin).

Abstract: The article discusses a new stray-find from Groß-Strömkendorf, the famous harbor and trading-place near Wismar at the Baltic coast: a fine sculptured hand holding a drinking horn. Very similar finds came to light through the last years in Seehausen (Sachsen-Anhalt) und Cotes/Chranwood (England). The small group of three spure-applications show a riding man holding a drinking-horn in his hand. The most striking parallels to this motive are picture-stones from Gotland and they are dated to the 8th and 9th century AD. The motive is interpretated as the welcome-drink for the death heroic warriors in Valhalla.
Abstrakt: artykuł omawia znalezisko z Groß-Strömkendorf, znanego centrum handlowego położonego nad Bałtykiem niedaleko Wismaru: wyobrażenie figuralne ręki trzymającej róg do picia. Analogiczne przedmioty znaleziono w ostatnich latach w Seehausen (Sachsen-Anhalt) i Cotes/Chranwood (Anglia). Niewielka seria trzech aplikacji ostróg przedstawia jeźdźca trzymającego róg do picia. Najbliższe analogie stanowią w tym przypadku postaci wyryte na kamieniach z Gotlandii datowanych na VIII–IX wiek. Motyw ten interpretuje się jako przedstawienie toastu powitalnego w Walhalli wojowników poległych heroiczną śmiercią.

Defensive settlement at Maszkowice is one of the best preserved long-lasting prehistorical sites in the Western Carpathians. What appears to be particularly interesting is the first settlement phase of the hillfort, which may be dated to the end of the Early Bronze Age and to the Middle Bronze Age (ca. 1650 – 1200 BC). The results of studies on materials collected during the field research of Maria Cabalska (seasons 1959 – 1975), as well as new excavation campaigns (2010 – 2012), allow us to formulate some conclusions concerning: settlement stratigraphy, spatial distribution of Early and Middle Bronze Age materials, chronology of the subsequent building phases and cultural connections of the populations living in the upper Dunajec Valley during the earlier periods of the Bronze Age. In the context of the last mentioned question what is particularly worth attention are the relics of fortifications in a form of a dry stone wall, discovered in 2011 – 2012 and connected with the oldest building phase of the hillfort (ca. 1650 – 1500 BC).

The aim of this paper is to make us aware of the limits of the numismatic documentation of Northern and Eastern Europe during the Early Middle Ages/the Viking Age. The sheer mass of material – almost 900,000 coins are recorded from finds along with numerous non-monetary silver artefacts – may induce us to think that everything is documented already, but at a closer scrutiny, this turns out to be wrong. Some regions and periods and some find categories are well covered by the material, others not. The paper presents a series of cases where a new find, a new technology (e.g. metal detector), a new methodological approach (e.g. die studies) or simply a more detailed study of the material brought new and unexpected insights. Some of the cases concern the coin production, others the coin circulation. Going beyond numismatics seen in isolation, the results inform us about the economic, political and social structures of the past society and thus highlight the contribution of numismatics to the study of history. In turn, these knowledge break-throughs open new paths of research and, significantly, make us aware of potential similar parallel cases of not yet recognized insights. This will help us to guide future research. In some cases, it would even be safe to extrapolate from the specific innovative case study to more general assumptions. In particular, the paper highlights danger of drawing conclusions from absence of evidence. Several examples are presented where the supposed lack of finds or of coin production turned out to be the result of inadequate research methods or technologies for finding the material in the ground. In other cases, the hazard of the discovery of a hoard changed the situation from absence or scarcity to abundance overnight. If conclusions are to be draw from absence of evidence, a minimum requirement would be to check that adequate research methods have been applied in order to ascertain that the absence is real and not the result of present day factors.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest dyskusja nad ograniczeniami rozpoznania numizmatycznego Europy Północnej i Wschodniej we wczesnym średniowieczu/okresie wikińskim. Sam ogrom materiału – ze znalezisk pochodzi prawie 900 tysięcy monet oraz srebra niemonetarnego – może skłaniać do przekonania, że wszystko jest już udokumentowane. Jednak głębsza refleksja pokazuje, że jest to przekonanie błędne. Niektóre regiony, okresy bądź kategorie znalezisk są dobrze rozpoznane, jednak stan rozpoznania innych pozostawia wiele do życzenia. Artykuł przedstawia serię przypadków, w których nowe znalezisko, nowa technologia (np. wykrywacz metalu), nowe podejście metodologiczne (np. badania połączeń stempli) lub po prostu bardziej szczegółowe badanie materiału przyniosły nowe i nieoczekiwane spostrzeżenia. Niektóre przytoczone przypadki dotyczą etapu produkcji, zaś inne etapu obiegu monet. Wykraczając poza numizmatykę widzianą jako samodzielną dyscyplinę, wyniki informują nas o ekonomicznych, politycznych i społecznych strukturach dawnego społeczeństwa, a tym samym podkreślają wkład numizmatyki w badanie historii. W efekcie nowe ustalenia otwierają nowe ścieżki badawcze i co istotne, uświadamiają nam istnienie potencjalnie podobnych przypadków w nierozpoznanych jeszcze obszarach. Pomagają również w planowaniu przyszłych badań. W niektórych przypadkach można nawet przeprowadzić ekstrapolację wyników konkretnego studium przypadku na bardziej ogólne założenia. Artykuł w szczególności zwraca uwagę na niebezpieczeństwo wyciągania wniosków wynikających z braku dowodów. Przedstawiono kilka przykładów, w których rzekomy brak znalezisk lub produkcji monet okazał się wynikiem nieodpowiednich metod badawczych lub technologii poszukiwania materiału w ziemi. W innych przypadkach, odkrycie skarbu zmieniało z dnia na dzień obraz z braku lub niedostatku źródeł na ich obfitość. Jeżeli wnioski mają być wyciągane z braku dowodów, minimalnym wymogiem byłoby sprawdzenie czy zastosowano odpowiednie metody badawcze.

Opis:
The collection of clay zoomorphic figurines from Tell Arbid, a site in the Khabur river basin in northern Mesopotamia, comprises nearly 600 specimens, dated mainly to the 3rd and first half of the 2nd millennium BC. It consists of solid figurines and the much less numerous wheeled figurines and hollow figurines/zoomorphic vessels, as well as a single rattle in the form of a zoomorphic figurine. The animals represented include chiefly equids, sheep, goats, cattle, dogs and birds. The find context usually does not permit anything but a very broad dating, but an analysis of details of execution makes it possible to establish the chronology of particular objects. Identified chronological assemblages illustrate the character of zoomorphic representations in particular periods. A comparative analysis reveals, among others, diachronic changes in the popularity of representations of particular kinds of animals. These changes are considered in comparison with the results of an examination of the osteological material in an effort to observe whether they could reflect processes taking place in the animal economy of Tell Arbid.

Problematyka pogranicza od ponad 100 lat jest przedmiotem dociekań przedstawicieli różnych dyscyplin naukowych. Rozwój refleksji teoretycznej przyczynił się do zwiększenia zakresu znaczeniowego tego terminu. W wyniku redefiniowania pogranicze stało się pojęciem wieloznacznym, wielowymiarowym, wymagającym każdorazowo odpowiedniego precyzowania. Przykładowo z punktu założeń modernistycznych (a więc też w ramach badań powadzonych w archeologii) pogranicze jest gdzieś umiejscowione – jest to konkretny obszar – natomiast poprzez jego przewartościowanie w ramach ujęcia postmodernistycznego każda forma kontaktu kulturowego jest pograniczem. Dyskusje toczące się na gruncie politologii, antropologii czy socjologii były dla mnie inspiracją do sformułowania kilku ogólnych uwag na temat rozumienia terminu pogranicze przez polskich mediewistów. W pracach tych badaczy dominuje pewnego rodzaju spójność w postrzeganiu i interpretowaniu zjawisk kulturowych zachodzących we wczesnym średniowieczu w południowej Wielkopolsce i w północnej części Dolnego Śląska (obszar ograniczony od północy przez równoleżnikowy odcinek Warty i środkowej Obry, natomiast od południa przez Dolinę Baryczy). Ta jednomyślność spowodowała, że w niniejszym artykule przeanalizowałam mechanizm konstruowania koncepcji dotyczących wczesnośredniowiecznej rzeczywistości tego obszaru, w celu wskazania, że u podstaw tego myślenia leży, nigdzie nie wypowiedziane przez badaczy expressis verbis, zbliżone definiowanie terminu pogranicze. Ponowne odczytanie wprowadzonych do literatury przedmiotu koncepcji nakreślonych przez mediewistów z perspektywy współcześnie kształtujących się poglądów badawczych pozwoliło na ukazanie dotychczasowych kierunków badawczych realizowanych w ramach studiów m.in. nad terytorialnym rozwojem państwa Piastów. Moje rozważania składają się z trzech części. Odpowiadają one sposobom definiowania terminu pogranicze. Pierwszy przykład określiłam jako perspektywa terytorialna – wskazuje on na ugruntowane w literaturze przedmiotu rozumienie dzisiejszego pogranicza Śląska i Wielkopolski przez historyków. W ich ustaleniach odnajdujemy pogląd głoszący obecność na analizowanym przeze mnie obszarze rubieży międzyplemiennej. Dyskusja historyków wskazuje na interpretowanie zjawisk kulturowych zachodzących na obszarze południowej Wielkopolski w opozycji do północnej części tego regionu. Linia wyznaczona przez środkowy odcinek Obry i dalej w kierunku wschodnim przez bagna obersko-mosińskie była pojmowana jako naturalna granica rozdzielająca ten region. Brak w dokumentach pisanych nazwy plemienia (lub plemion) zajmującego południową Wielkopolskę powodował trudności w interpretacji zjawisk kulturowych tutaj zachodzących. Próbą wyjścia z poznawczego impasu wynikającego z braku danych było prowadzenie dociekań ukierunkowanych na rozpoznanie późniejszych podziałów administracyjno-terytorialnych. Część badaczy przyjmowała je wówczas jako punkt odniesienia w ustalaniu zasięgu starszych struktur plemiennych. Kolejną perspektywę terytorialno-interakcyjną związałam z poglądem głoszącym sposób organizacji osadnictwa na tym terenie po przyłączeniu do państwa Piastów. Nawiązują one do pogranicza jako obszaru położonego przy granicy, ale jednocześnie w pewnej odległości od centrum. Taka perspektywa związana jest z funkcjonowaniem koncepcji rdzeń peryferie w ramach politologii lub centrum peryferie w socjologii. W poglądach na temat zasiedlenia południowej Wielkopolski i północnego Dolnego Śląska po rzekę Barycz można odnaleźć elementy uniwersalnych koncepcji opisujących i tłumaczących procesy zachodzące na obszarach nowo zdobytych, uzależnionych czy inkorporowanych. Trzecia, interakcyjna perspektywa to propozycja zdefiniowania autonomicznej problematyki badawczej dla tego obszaru, w której sugeruję podjęcie studiów nad obliczem kulturowym zamieszkującej tam społeczności. Taka propozycja niweluje terytorialny wymiar pogranicza, konieczność jego umiejscowienia w pobliżu granicy oraz jego relacyjność do jakiegoś centrum czy rdzenia. W nawiązaniu do niej pogranicze definiuję jako spotkanie przedstawicieli różnych społeczności lub całych społeczności o odmiennym systemie wartości, norm czy strukturze społecznej. Taki kontakt wymusza interakcje, a ich rezultaty mogą być różnorodne – od trwania przy swoich wartościach aż po ukształtowanie się nowej rzeczywistości. Społeczności te określam jako wspólnoty lokalne, czyli są to niewielki grupy ludzi zamieszkująca określony obszar, którego centrum stanowi niewielki gród. Nie jest on rozumiany jako obiekt obronny, ale jako miejsce organizujące życie każdej społeczności.
The issue of borderlands has been a subject of inquiry for various representatives of scientific disciplines for over 100 years. The development of theoretical reflection has contributed to the increase of the semantic scope of this term. Having been redefined, the term borderlands has come to have multiple meanings, and thus it requires a precise defining with each usage. As an example, from the modernist perspective (and as such on the level of archaeological research) borderlands, being a particular area, are situated somewhere physically, whilst on the other hand, due to the term’s re-evaluation from a postmodernist standpoint, every form of cultural contact is a borderland. The ongoing discussions within political science, anthropology, and sociology were my inspiration for formulating a few general remarks on the understanding of the term borderlands by Polish medieval scholars. In the works of these researchers, a certain consistency predominates in viewing and interpreting cultural phenomenon within the early medieval period of southern Wielkopolska and northern Dolny Śląsk (an area limited from the north by the latitudinal section of the Warta river and the central part of the Obra river, whereas from the south by the Barycz valley). This single-mindedness spurred me in this article to examine the mechanism for constructing conceptions concerning the early middle age reality of the area in the hopes of showing that the basis of this thinking is silently assumed definition of the term borderlands. The concepts present in the subject literature as introduced by medieval scholars, when reread from the perspective of modern emerging research theories, allowed me to showcase the current research directions undertaken within studies on i.a., the territorial expansions of the Piast dynasty. My deliberations consist of three parts. They respond to the way the term borderlands is defined. The first I characterize as the territorial viewpoint; indicating the established perspective found within the source literature of the historians’ understanding of today’s borderland between Śląsk and Wielkopolska. In their findings we come across a viewpoint asserting the existence of borderlands between tribes within the discussed area. The historical discussion suggests that the cultural phenomena of southern Wielkopolska are interpreted in opposition to the northern lands of this region. The border line created by the Obra river and further to the east by the Mosiński Canal marshes, was perceived as the natural border dividing the region. The lack of any name of the tribe (or tribes) inhabiting southern Wielkopolska in the written sources has caused difficulties in interpreting cultural phenomena occurring in the area. An attempt to escape this cognitive gridlock resulting from a lack of data, was to conduct research focused on recognizing subsequent administrative and territorial divisions. Some of the researchers accepted them as the benchmark for determining the range of earlier tribal structures. The next perspective, being territorial and interactive, I tied to the outlook maintaining the settlement method of the area after it was joined to the territories of the Piast dynasty. They refer to the borderlands as an area located next to the border and also at a distance from the center. This perspective – within political studies – relates to the idea of a core and peripheries, or, as is the case in sociology, as center and peripheries. Elements of universal concepts describing and explaining the processes taking place on areas newly conquered, dependent, or incorporated, can be found within the views concerning the process of settling southern Wielkopolska and northern Dolny Śląsk up to the river Barycz. The third perspective is the interactive one. It is a proposal to define the autonomous research issue of this area, in which I suggest that research be conducted on the culture of the inhabiting society. This suggestion diminishes the territorial aspect of the borderlands, the necessity to locate it near to the border, and its relation to some center or core. I define borderlands as an interaction between representatives of different communities, or whole communities, with a differing system of values, norms, or social structure. This kind of contact necessitates interactions, with possibly varying and diverse results – from persisting with ones’ own values to shaping a new reality. These communities I characterize as local, that is, small groups inhabiting a given area with its none-too large center – this being a stronghold (Polish – gród). This structure is not to be understood as a defensive facility, but rather as a place organizing the life of every community. This paper presents the results of multidisciplinary research on Neo-Holocene slope deposits cover undertaken in the Ner River basin in central Poland. An environmental archaeology research has been undertaken as part of archaeological investigations at the Szynkielew site. Distinctive archaeological relicts of human activity have been recorded at the site documenting periods of intense activity of human communities from the Bronze Age to Middle Ages. Geoarchaeological investigations of slope cover and overbank alluvia allowed for the recognition of fossil cultural layers, buried soils and sandy slope wash sediments accumulated on the surface of a valley slope and also thick overbank deposits in the valley floor. The features of studied slope deposits are most typical for “deluvial sands” and, if they concern more humic matter, for “soil deluvia”. Their accumulation resulted from natural processes initiated in the periods of intensive human impact. Artefacts and ecofacts included within deposits play a very important role to correctly recognise the chronology of covers. The origin and development stages of slope cover have been correlated with anthropogenic changes of the natural environment. Two main phases of acceleration of slope processes have been recognised as dated to the Middle Bronze Age and to the Early Middle Ages. The phase of accumulation of overbank deposits in the Early Middle Ages was recorded too. The medieval period of intense geomorphological processes took place in the 12th century AD after the area became a property of the chapter of the Cracow bishop.
Artykuł prezentuje wyniki multidyscyplinarnych badań neoholoceńskicj pokrywy stokowej odkrytej w zlewni Neru w Polsce Środkowej. Badania z zakresu archeologii środowiskowej zrealizowane zostały w ramach prac archeologicznych prowadzonych na stanowisku Szynkielew. Przyniosły one odkrycie na obszarze stanowiska bogatych reliktów intensywnego osadnictwa grup ludzkich od epoki brązu po wczesne średniowiecze. Przeprowadzone badania geoarcheologiczne pokryw stokowych oraz aluwiów facji pozakorytowej umożliwiły rozpoznanie warstw kulturowych, gleb kopalnych oraz deluwiów rozwiniętych na zboczach doliny, a także miąższej pokrywy osadów pozakorytowych w dnie doliny Dobrzynki. W obrębie pokrywy stokowej rozpoznane zostały deluwia piaszczyste, a także zawierające domieszki próchniczne tzw. deluwia glebowe. Akumulacja osadów stokowych zachodziła w warunkach silnej antropopresji, co potwierdzają występujące w nich artefakty i ekofakty, które ponadto umożliwiły precyzyjne określenie wieku odkrytych deluwiów. Inicjowanie oraz rozwój procesów stokowych zostały skorelowane z fazami antropogenicznego przeobrażania środowiska naturalnego. Wyróżniono dwie główne fazy wzmożenia tych procesów, których wiek określono na środkową epokę brązu oraz wczesne średniowiecze. Czas akumulacji pokrywy aluwiów pozakorytowych także określony został na wczesne średniowiecze. Wczesnośredniowieczna faza intensywnych procesów geomorfologicznych miała miejsce w XII wieku, po włączeniu „opola chropskiego” w obręb włości kapituły krakowskiej.

Starogard Łobeski is a settlement situated about 8 km to the east of Resko on the east bank of the Rega river. Undoubtedly the area’s most interesting archaeological site from the Early Middle Ages, this well-preserved stronghold is located about 2 km to the south of Starogard. The feature has been known since at least the 1930s, and it has been excavated twice archaeologically. The first excavations were carried out by Adolf Stubenrauch in 1891 with further excavations being undertaken by Hans-Jürgen Eggers in 1938. This paper presents the results of this research which hitherto has not been widely published.

Stanowiska archeologiczne na Wysoczyźnie Siedleckiej pozwalają na zaobserwowanie historii osadnictwa na tym terenie od późnego paleolitu do średniowiecza. Teren usytuowany na piaszczystych morenach czołowych, mimo szeroko rozgałęzionych szlaków wodnych, nie stanowił bardzo atrakcyjnej lokalizacji osadniczej. Na obszarze obecnie funkcjonującego powiatu udało wyodrębnić się kilkaset śladów obecności ludzkiej na tym terenie. Część ze znalezisk była incydentalnych i nie stanowiła podstawy do pogłębionych poszukiwań. Wśród zarejestrowanych stanowisk archeologicznych wyróżnić można te, na których prowadzone są szeroko zakrojone badania wykopaliskowe, jak i badania ratownicze. W związku z wciąż nowymi metodami badawczymi, otwieranie nowych stanowisk archeologicznych jest jak najbardziej zasadne, co przyniesie nowe odkrycia i dotychczas nieznane artefakty bytności osadniczej na tym terenie.
Archaeological sites in the Siedlecka Upland allow to observe a cross–section of the entire history of settlement in this area from the late Paleolithic to the Middle Ages. The area, situated on sandy terminal moraines, was not a very attractive settlement location, despite the widely branched waterways. In the area of the currently functioning region, several hundred traces of human presence in this area have been identified. Some of the finds were incidental and did not constitute the basis for in–depth searches. Among the registered archaeological sites, there are those where extensive excavations and rescue research are carried out. Due to the constantly new research methods, opening new archaeological sites is absolutely justified, which will bring new discoveries and hitherto unknown artifacts of settlement in this area.
