The aim of the article is to analyse the Polish-Czech relations on a social platform, seen through the prism of the football event—Euro 2012. The text opens with a glance at a broader context of these relations generated by mutual stereotypes and the media coverage of certain peculiarities of both national cultures. Then it goes on to giving quite detailed a record of the atmosphere created by the Polish and Czechs fans during the tournament, which was written into the conception of pop nationalism. The whole picture is enriched with an attempt to refer the situation observed in Wrocław to the attitudes Poles generally have to Czechs, expressed by means of statistical data as well as features of character traditionally ascribed to this nation in Poland.
Celem artykułu jest przeprowadzenie analizy relacji polsko-czeskich na płaszczyźnie społecznej, widzianych przez pryzmat wydarzenia piłkarskiego – Euro 2012. Tekst otwiera spojrzenie na szerszy kontekst owych relacji, tworzony przez wzajemne stereotypy oraz przekazy medialne dotyczące niektórych osobliwości obu kultur narodowych. Następnie przedstawiono dosyć szczegółowy zapis atmosfery stworzonej przez polskich i czeskich kibiców podczas rzeczonego turnieju, co zostało wpisane w pojęcie banalnego nacjonalizmu. Cały obraz jest wzbogacony o próbę odniesienia sytuacji zaobserwowanej we Wrocławiu do postaw, jakie Polacy, ogólnie rzecz biorąc, posiadają wobec Czechów. Nastawienia te wyrażono za pomocą danych statystycznych, jak również cech charakteru tradycyjnie przypisywanych temu narodowi w Polsce.

The growth of demand for large sporting events caused that the process of organizing this type of events has become extremely complicated and toilsome. This is a result of rising public expectations with regard to participation in the mega events which are characterized by unpredictability, complication, and provides fans with a lot of emotions, sense of fulfillment, loyalty and satisfaction. Innovativeness and the using of logistics as a concept to optimize the processes associated with the gala are a key success factors according to sporting event which the author has analyzed and interpreted. The article contains an example of Euro 2012, as a large-scale sporting event that except economical benefits has promoted Poland as an attractive brand.

In this paper a modified Preuss model was used to assess the factors to enhance the competitiveness of the region and the SMEs located in the region. To accomplish the above, six types of event-structure were applied: infrastructure, knowledge, networks, culture, image and emotions. They were described in detail in reference to the case of Euro 2012 in Poland and the Pomeranian region in particular. Finally the Authors take the attempt to describe the connection between the determinants and the possible competitive position of region and its SMEs.
W niniejszym opracowaniu wykorzystano zmodyfikowany model Preussa w celu oszacowania czynników przyczyniających się do zwiększenia konkurencyjności regionu i zlokalizowanych na jego obszarze przedsiębiorstw sektora MSP. Model Preussa nawiązuje do czynników kształtujących konkurencyjność regionu, ukazując powiązania pomiędzy wydarzeniem sportowym a zmianą czynników lokalizacji czynników, które zmieniają się pod wpływem wielkoformatowego wydarzenia sportowego. Zalicza się do nich: infrastrukturę, wiedzę, emocje, sieci, kulturę i wyobrażenia. Model Preussa zespala dwie grupy teoretycznych rozważań: teorii wpływu imprez wielkoformatowych na region oraz teorii konkurencyjności regionu. W obu przypadkach podkreśla się występowanie nie tylko czynników mierzalnych (infrastruktura, zasoby ludzkie), ale także tych niemierzalnych (emocje, wyobrażenia, aspekty kulturowe itp.).

The goal of the paper was to present a case study of the preparations for the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship in Poland, and especially in Wrocław, in order to help the managers of similar multiproject undertakings in the future to manage more effectively the risk and to reduce to uncertainty linked to such projects. In the moment the paper is written, the preparations are on their way, and we already have had some difficult, but valuable experience. Several problems occurred which were threatening the success of the projects conducted in the framework of the preparations, several problems can still be expected in the basis of the experience. The problems from the past had to be solved somehow, the problems to be expected have to be managed also - all this may constitute valuable advice for similar projects in the future. To sum up the main problems that have been identified so far in the projects conducted in the framework of the preparations for the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, we have to emphasize the legal problems. The law as it was formulated in the legal acts before the beginning of the preparations would have made them nearly impossible to be accomplished. Thus, several modifications had to be introduced. Also later the human nature which makes some people use the "holes" in legal acts for their personal advantage blocked the projects realization for a considerable period of time, which in case of projects which simply have to be finished in time, because otherwise we face a real disaster, is a very serious problem. The disputes concerned above all the land ownership and the bidding results. The long legal procedures of considering the appeals, the expropriation etc. were a real nuisance. Also it happened that a construction company which won the bidding did not accomplish what it was supposed to, thus we faced the necessity of changing a company, which made it necessary to deal with a an "empty" period where a new company had to be selected and the construction site had to be handed over. We hope that the present paper will allow other project managers to learn from the lesson our country and city has been going through at the moment and that the painful learning process we have been experiencing will be of use to someone else.

Transport publiczny odgrywa bardzo istotną rolę w funkcjonowaniu każdego większego ośrodka miejskiego, lecz ma szczególne znaczenie w sytuacji gdy należy obsłużyć nagły, znaczny przyrost liczby pasażerow, ktorzy nie posiadają własnego środka transportu, np. są turystami. Taka sytuacja może mieć miejsce gdy miasto jest gospodarzem eventu, takiego jak organizacja meczów piłkarskich Mistrzostw Europy. W 2012 r. polskie i ukraińskie miasta wspólnie gościły zawody EURO 2012. Jednym z miast gospodarzy był Lwów. W niniejszym artykule scharakteryzowano funkcjonowanie transportu publicznego Lwowa przed organizacją mistrzostw piłkarskich. Poddano analizie ich wpływ na przemiany w działalności sektora transportu miejskiego oraz porównano sytuację w 2012 r. i pod koniec 2019 r. Analiza posłużyła do sformułowania wniosków, które miały na celu odpowiedzieć na pytania badawcze dotyczące wpływu organizacji zawodów sportowych o randze międzynarodowej na funkcjonowanie i reorganizację transportu miejskiego Lwowa.
Public transport plays a very important role in the functioning of every major urban center, but it is particularly important in the situation when it is necessary to handle a sudden, significant increase in the number of passengers who do not have their own means of transport, e.g. tourists. This situation can occur when the city hosts an event such as the organization of European Championship football matches. In 2012, Polish and Ukrainian cities jointly hosted the EURO 2012 competition. Lviv was one of the host cities. This article characterizes the functioning of Lviv public transport before the organization of the football championship. Their impact on changes in the urban transport sector was analyzed, and the situation was compared in 2012 and at the end of 2019. The analysis was used to formulate conclusions aimed at answering research questions on the impact of the organization of international sports competitions on the functioning and reorganization Lviv city transport.

In this article the authors have presented the history and organizational structure of the UEFA Euro 2012. They describe the main investments accompanying the organization of the competition in Poland, and particularly in Wrocław (one of the host cities). They also present a synthesis of the costs and benefits connected with organizing the championship. For the needs of the article, a survey was taken of Wrocław residents asking them what results they foresaw from the organization of the event. The aim of the research was to determine perceptions of the Euro 2012’s expected social, economic, and promotional effects for the city and the country.

Artykuł analizuje nieintuicyjne właściwości (paradoksy) rankingu narodowych drużyn piłkarskich FIFA. Najbardziej zaskakującym fenomenem jest zaniżanie pozycji w rankingu drużyn będących gospodarzami turniejów mistrzowskich. „Efekt gospodarza” jest wynikiem zwolnienia gospodarza turnieju z eliminacji i związanym z tym ograniczeniem meczów przed mistrzostwami jedynie do nisko punktowanych meczów towarzyskich. Różne modele zbudowane na podstawie danych FIFA pozwalają oszacować, że pozycja Polski w rankingu jako gospodarza mistrzostw Europy została obniżona od około 16 do 35 pozycji.

UEFA Euro 2012 was the biggest organizational, sporting and business project in the Polish history. European Championships in football are an elite sporting event, which the richest and fastest developing countries try to be the hosts of. UEFA Euro 2012 was the first tournament located in Central and Eastern Europe. The aim of this article is to analyze UEFA Euro 2012 with accordance to economic and social benefits as well as cost-effectiveness of realized investments. Primary research methods were critical analyzes of reports and minutes of companies responsible for preparation of the tournament, the analyzes of literature, own observations and statistics. The European Championships in football which took place in Poland and Ukraine in June and July 2012 are the object of the study. In the range of preparation phase many investments were done, especially in transport infrastructure. Airports, train stations and bus stations were modernized. New, multifunctional sporting objects were built. As it is clear from the calculations, many investments exceeded planned costs. The costs of building the National Stadium were much higher than any other similar objects in Europe. On the other hand the transfer times between host cities and Cracow decreased which directly contributed to the increase of travelling comfort.

The paper presents an analysis of tourist travel in Poland during the 2000-2012 time period and predictions for years 2013-2017. Since 2000 the amount of travelling Polish citizens has declined. Various factors may have impacted this state of matters e.g. the economic crisis or increasing the VAT rate. The biggest decline in tourist travel was observed between 2007 and 2009 and in 2011. On the other hand, the factor which increased the number of visits between 2007 and 2009 may have been the Euro 2012 championship, organized by both Poland and Ukraine. The paper presents a "eurosensitivity" factor, which describes the increase in people visiting selected voivodeships during 2012, primarily due to the Euro 2012 championship. According to the calculations, the voivodeship which benefited from the highest increase was Małopolska. The article also presents an estimation of travel for years 2013-2017.

Zbliżające się Mistrzostwa Europy w Piłce Nożnej UEFA EURO 2012, które odbędą się w Polsce oraz na Ukrainie, stanowią ogromne wyzwanie transportowe dla miast gospodarzy. Doświadczenia miast w których organizowane były tego typu imprezy, ale również miast polskich, które organizowały lub organizują cyklicznie imprezy masowe dowodzą konieczności zapewnienia znacznej podaży w transporcie zbiorowym, jedynym środku, który jest w stanie obsłużyć ogromne ilości uczestników, w stosunkowo krótkim czasie. W artykule przedstawiono w skrócie wnioski oraz zalecenia dla obsługi transportowej z wykorzystaniem transportu szynowego Stadionu Miejskiego we Wrocławiu, jednej z aren UEFA EURO 2012, sformułowane przez zespół projektowy, w pracach którego uczestniczyli autorzy.
European Football Championship UEFA EURO 2012, which will be organized by Poland and Ukraine, determined a huge transportation challenge for the host cities. According to the experience taken during the similar events and by the cities which organized such events in the past, the only means of transport which are able to ensure a proper service are the means of public transport, due to the large number of participants in relatively short time. Polish host cities’ transportation systems enable fan’s PT service by bus, tram or rail, but the track systems have an advantage on the road one, taking into consideration reliability and capacity criteria. The conclusions formulated by the project team (including paper authors) for the Wroclaw Arena concerning the transportation service during the UEFA EURO 2012 have been presented in the paper.

The article concerns Polish preparations for the European Football Championship UEFA EURO 2012. A wide range of projects that must be completed before EURO 2012 kicks off, apart from stadiums, include construction of modern road infrastructure. A network of roads, railroads and flights is to connect host cities and create an efficient system of supporting the championship. The authors of the article present structures responsible for completing the tasks related to road infrastructure. They also focus on the scale of preparations for UEFA EURO 2012.

The European Football Championship (Euro 2012) organized in Poland became the pretext for a number of infrastructural changes. A high level of expenditure makes the Polish event the most expensive among events of this magnitude. The fact that these changes were 100% financed by public funds raises the question of whether these funds were used in a substantiated way. Therefore, the aim of this study is to estimate the willingness-to-pay (WTP) among the community of the Pomeranian region, in connection with the construction of the stadium in Gdansk. A survey conducted among 299 respondents was the source of information. The results of the study show that the average value of WTP for the whole sample was 6.71 EUR2012, while the aggregate value for the whole region was 15.4 million EUR2012. The regression analysis showed that the level of WTP is determined in particular by income levels. The results thus confirm the existence of intangible benefits associated with the constructed facilities. However, it should be noted that the importance of these benefits is insignificant and does not compensate for the massive expenditure from public sources.

Spirit shaped by physical culture. Sport in culture institutionsArticle shows relations between sport and culture institutions in Poland, especially in the time of The 2012 UEFA European Football Championship (Euro 2012). Author presents in introduction semantic and historical connections of culture and sport, particularly concentrating on ancient and modern Olympic Games. The main part of the text includes recount of activities, projects and exhibitions organised by culture institutions and combined with sport. Separate fragment is dedicated for art and culture activities during sport events as well as made on sport facilities, for example stadiums. Case studies bring on conclusion culture and sport connection support comprehensive human development. Sport themes in culture institutions could carry a lot of advantages in, but also some risks. It is important to keep a balance and treat sport only as a culture phenomenon.
