The main purpose of my paper is to consider a problem of justice in a context of health care. The John Rawls’ theory is my point of methodological departure. He states in it the importance of the concept of fairness and equality from behind what he terms a “veil of ignorance”. Rawls refers to the “original position” in which a person is attempting to determine a fair arrangement for society without any preconceived notions or prejudices. I refer, however, his theory to the health care field and I consider such problems as fair distribution of medical care or fair partition of taxes for personal insurance. Further problems appear there in consequence, e.g. who has the privilege to attain the medical help as a first and the resulting doctor’s ethical dilemmas.

In the practice of sociocultural anthropology, ethics is an important subject for Polish scholars, who more and more readily discuss the need for developing ethical standards regulating their research practice. Special attention in this respect should be paid to socially and practically engaged anthropological projects which, as the text proves, are above all “ethical”, that is focused, as a task in itself, on the goals and effects of researchers’ actions in specifi c environments. The objective of the text is to reflect on selected aspects of this type of anthropological activity. Its main source of inspiration were the experiences of scholars conducting research, undertaking specific actions on behalf of immigrants and refugees, and entering into negotiations with offi cials – persons from the broadly defi ned sphere of education. All the anthropologists involved in these activities are connected to the Poznań Centre for Migration Studies (Centrum Badań Migracyjnych, CeBaM) and the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at Adam Mickiewicz University, as is the author of the text, and participated in the project: Social and Cultural Identification of Foreigners.

Artykuł traktuje o problemach metodologicznych i etycznych, jakie naukowcy napotkać mogą w badaniach biograficznych realizowanych z udziałem osób ze zbiorowości zagrożonych marginalizacją. Autorka odnosi się w tekście do własnych doświadczeń związanych z realizacją projektów dotyczących przede wszystkim problematyki ubóstwa i wykluczenia społecznego, uznając, że otwarta dyskusja nad metodologią i etyką badań społecznych sprzyja zarówno doskonaleniu procedur, jak i komfortowi zarówno uczestników badań, jak i badaczy. W zakresie problemów metodologicznych w artykule uwzględniono kwestie: konstruowania próby badawczej, w tym przepisów dotyczących ochrony danych osobowych, roli gatekeepers i problemów z dostępnością narratorów, problemów wynikających z różnic strukturalnych między uczestnikami badań a badaczami, a także kompetencji interpersonalnych oraz metodologicznych badaczy. W drugiej części artykułu podjęto kwestie problemów etycznych: świadomej zgody, ingerencji w życie narratorów oraz oczekiwań aktorów indywidualnych i instytucjonalnych uczestniczących w badaniach. W zakończeniu autorka rozważa możliwość wprowadzenia superwizji dla osób prowadzących wywiady narracyjne i biograficzne.
The paper treats methodological and ethical problems the scientists possibly face in biographical research with the participation of the persons from the collectivities endangered by marginalization. The author reflects in the text on her own experiences related to the projects on poverty and social exclusion, claiming that the open discussion on social research methodology and ethics contributes both to procedures development and to the sense of comfort of research participants and researchers. As for the methodological problems, the following issues are pondered: the sampling construction, including personal data protection, the role of the gatekeepers and troubles with narrators accessibility, problems resulting from structural inequalities between a researcher and a research participant, as well as researchers’ interpersonal skills and their methodological competences. The ethical problems such as informed consent, researchers’ intervention in narrators’ life and individual and institutional social actors’ expectations are discussed in the second part of the text. In the final remarks, the author considers the possibility of implementing of supervision for the researchers conducting narrative and biographical interviews.

Asystenci rodziny doświadczają różnych dylematów etycznych w swojej codziennej pracy z rodzinami. Przeżywanie sytuacji konfliktowych, konieczność dokonywania trudnych wyborów są nieodłącznymi elementami ich praktyki. Są to sytuacje, w których asystenci rodziny rozważają wybór pomiędzy przynajmniej dwiema możliwościami działania, które wydają się właściwe. Rozłożenie ich w czasie czy zastosowanie obu możliwości nie może mieć zastosowania w praktyce. Celem artykułu jest próba przyjrzenia się wybranym dylematom etycznym w pracy asystenta rodziny, w odwołaniu do typologii dylematów etycznych Frederica Reamera. Zgodnie z przyjętą w artykule typologią, w przestrzeni współpracy z rodzinami pojawiają się dylematy etyczne dotyczące bezpośredniej pracy z rodziną, realizacji programów pomocy społecznej oraz stosunku między przedstawicielami profesji. Informacje przedstawione w tekście oparte są na publikacjach, badaniach i raportach dotyczących asystentury rodziny. Pierwsza grupa dylematów etycznych ujawnia się podczas konstruowania relacji wspierającej i pomocowej asystentów z rodzinami i odwołuje się do takich obszarów, jak: dobrowolność współpracy, granice współpracy, prawo do samostanowienia i decydowania o sobie, czy granice odpowiedzialności. Druga grupa dylematów etycznych wiąże się z planowaniem i wdrażaniem różnych rozwiązań z obszaru polityki społecznej i programów wspierających i pomocowych oferowanych rodzinie. Ostatnia grupa dylematów etycznych wynika z różnego rozumienia asystentury rodziny w strukturach systemu pomocy społecznej. Ujawniają się one również w konstruowaniu relacji z pracownikami socjalnymi. Samo nazwanie dylematów etycznych nie ułatwia profesjonalistom podejmowania działań pomocowych. Przestrzenią ułatwiającą radzenie sobie z tymi dylematami jest superwizja, czy przywołany w artykule sześcioetapowy, sekwencyjny model rozwiązywania dylematów etycznych.
The purpose of the article is to describe selected ethical dilemmas in the work of a family assistant, based on the typology of ethical dilemmas of Frederic Reamer. In accordance with the typology adopted in the article, in the area of cooperation with families, ethical dilemmas regarding direct work with families, implementation of social assistance programs and relationship between representatives of the profession arise. The information presented in the text is based on publications, studies and reports on family assistantship. The first group of ethical dilemmas is revealed when constructing supportive and helping relationship between assistants and families. It refers to such areas as: voluntary cooperation, limits of cooperation, the right to self-determination or limits of responsibility. The second group of ethical dilemmas is related to the planning and implementation of various solutions in the field of social policy and also support and assistance programs offered to the family. The last group of ethical dilemmas results from a different understanding of family assistantship in the structures of the social assistance system. They are also revealed in the construction of relationships with social workers. The text also includes solutions how to cope with these dilemmas.

Wiodącym celem artykułu jest analiza wiodących dylematów i problemów natury etycznej, występujących na poziomie działań politycznych we liberalnych demokracjach. Owe problemy podnoszone są przede w kontekście prób redefiniowania m.in. wiodących pojęć dotyczących polityki, polityczności czy komunikacji medialnej oraz w kontekście zmiany dominujących relacji między polityką- mediami a opinią publiczną. Jednak to, co stanowi najszerszą ramę tematyczną podejmowanych w artykule problemów odnosi się przede wszystkim do pokazania istotnych różnic w liberalnym i konserwatywnym podejściu do ujmowania polityki i polityczności i wynikających z nich problemów natury etycznej.
Main idea of the paper is to point out, that in contemporary democracies, defined by liberal formula, both political authorities, mass media and public opinion have to face up numerous challenges, which results are difficult to predict. This observation is specially accurate in case of ethical dilemmas. Such phenomenon is accompanied by change in sociological reflection itself concerning mutual relations between areas mentioned above, resulting mainly from global processes. Demands for redefinition or even substitution some terms, typical for primary modernity, as: society, mass media, state, sovereignty, politics and political, by new ones occur more often. Main ethical dilemma of liberal democracies concerns what kind of action should political authorities take to obtain their crucial objective – development of free person as a moral human being. Moreover, communicational dimension of contemporary politics becomes also main source of ethical corruption, based on moralisation of politics and conducted on the level of language.

It is nearly impossible to study behaviour effectively without any reference to its context. This is because it is generally known in the psychological literature that behaviour is partially a product of its environment. This suggests that many behavioural processes may be universal but there are significant variations in their manifestations. For instance, love may be a universal process but its manifestation varies from one society to another. Given that ethical decision-making is a behavioural process, it stands to reason that its manifestation will vary from one culture to another. It is against this premise that this paper seeks to demonstrate that despite the existence of the ‘universal’ normative ethical principles, ethical decisions will be expected to vary across cultural space and even evolve with time. This paper achieves this objective by employing typical ethical dilemmas that Ghanaian psychologists and other health professionals encounter to show how and why what is ethical in one culture becomes unethical in the Ghanaian context and what is unethical in the Ghanaian context becomes ethical in another culture.

The article presents the statistical findings of a study that investigated the effects of gender on the ethical decision-making of professionals. Ethical dilemmas were presented to 1,809 teachers, doctors and lawyers in the form of a questionnaire. The individuals were asked to choose a course of action and provide reasons for their choice. What was of particular interest was how the professionals prioritised different moral theories in their decision-making; namely, whether the reasons they gave were deontological, consequential or virtue ethical in nature. The findings are significant for those seeking to revise and improve professional ethical education and practice.

The demands of educational practice are changing alongside our dynamically changing society. It is, therefore, necessary to purposefully and systematically seek ways to motivate, teach, and develop independent thinking among learners. This theoretical study aims to identify and characterize the essential assumptions and reasons for the implementation of digital games into ethical education classes. The fundamental premise is the thematic variability of game narratives, and a fulfillment of the experience attributes through the interactivity both in terms of the direct interactivity of the learner and the medium and in the subsequent discussion as a part of value reflection. Attention is focused on the process of ethical decision-making, ethical dilemmas, and problems that can be identified in many digital games containing at least a basic narrative structure. Interactive narration includes, besides the story itself, the influence of the participant on the further direction of the storyline, allowing players to see the consequences of their individual decisions within simulated situations. The study explores a game principle – the butterfly effect – in the context of ethical decision-making in particular through the game Detroit: Become Human, as well as demonstrates its usability within ethical education classes.

The present paper presents some empirical results of investigation in ethical behavior of enterprises and their workers in Portugal (2004) in comparison to results from the Polish investigation (1997) conducted in the same areas of business ethics by Lewicka-Strzałecka seven years before. The comparison deals with perception of ethical dimension in organizational activity, obedience to law, companies responsibility to their stakeholders, unethical behaviour, whistle blowing, institutionalization and formalization of ethics in organizations and others. Obviously, every conclusion based on this comparison should be treated with caution because of many limitations and context-specific influences on results which were out of control and shortly described at the end.

If we talk about dilemmas and the ethical challenges of the present time, then we suggest simultaneously that these problems differ in some way from universal ethical questions, important to man in every epoch and in every circumstances, and from these issues which were important in the past or will turn out important in the future, however, at present the general agreement concerning definite decisions prevails. Then it is necessary to identify those special problems of the present time and point out the features due to which they acquire special significance to us. However, presenting the matter in such a way does not seem fully justified, because the times in which we live differ in many regards from all mankind has ever experienced. The development of science and technology and increasing possibility of activities resulting from them, and also a level of complexity of relations linking the acting subject with other different subjects and the external world, caused that also ethical problems have taken on a whole new dimension. The issues which in the beginning of the XXth century were considered as minor or banal (e.g. the problem of man’s influence on the environment) became the key ethical questions in the course of several decades stirring up deep divisions not only among ethicists, but also in the whole society. In majority, they are however practical problems connected with certain general philosophical theories, such as abortion, euthanasia or medical experiments. In the last years they grew almost into symbols, and the way of their deciding shows a general ideological attitude, and even allows to define political views.

The Polish family law has developed three types of adoption: incomplete, full and total. Each of them is a reply to the arising new threat of the good of the child. Simultaneously each of them indeed influences the identity of the child. As a result of the preparation a civil status of the child is changing. The adoption is connected with secrecy. Originally it was firmly stressed. At present the doctrine as well as practitioners think that holding on to secrecy is not necessarily purposeful. The presented legal structures give rise to a series of ethical dilemmas. Firstly, the question arises about supporting biological parents in leaving the child in their family. The law does not regulate such efforts. It only orders “to wait” six weeks for making the decision on adoption by the mother of the child. Secondly, the similar question arises on the part of adopting parents. What motivation do they have? Is this good of the child or their own good alone? Is combining these goods in one act possible? Also the question arises with reference to respecting the religious membership of the child. As a result of the adoption the surname of the child is changed. Even a change of the child’s first name is possible. The religious identity remains unchanged. The practice shows that family relations with the adopted child are not always successful. The rich case law proves that resolving adoption is not always possible.

The analysis of the deficits and ethical dilemmas in research will be related to two disciplines of the social sciences: sociology and economics. Research conducted within these disciplines, because of its multi-paradigm nature, tends to be characterized by deficits, not only ethical but also ethical and methodological dilemmas and interpretation reasons. The leading thesis of this paper aims to prove that the looming deficits and ethical dilemmas of Polish researchers in the field of social sciences are two basic but very different premises. The first group of reasons primarily refer to broad ethical deficits, perceived unreliableness in terms of scientific research. It is related mainly to the structural aspects of the functioning of universities and other research units and logic parameterization. In the ethical programs (especially codes of ethics), ethical deficits are identified in three areas of ‘activity’ of research related to the description, diagnosis and interpretation of the results relating to: bragging – e.g. the preparation, recording and publishing of the results that were not obtained; falsification – which means manipulating the research materials, equipment or method, replacing or bypassing the data in such a way that the results are not presented in a true way; plagiarism – the appropriation of other people ideas, methods, results, or terms without proper reference. Plagiarism is also the unauthorized use of information obtained through confidential review of proposals and manuscripts, or e.g. using conference presentations without permission. Its structural evidence is primarily the emphasis on ‘productivity’ and parameterization as the basic criterion, not only of scientific but also academic success-oriented and personalized careers. The second group of reasons refers primarily to broad ethical dilemmas; to the ethical context of social research at every stage of the proceedings: conceptualization, selection of methods, techniques and research tools, conducting research (which concern for example the covert participant observation), analysis and inter pretation of data, publishing developed and interpreted empirical material. Performing even a cursory analysis of how to present research findings in these two disciplines, you can come to the conclusion that the methodological competence of the investigator does not always go hand in hand with ethical competence. What is more, there is a tendency to downplay the principle that the social sciences should be guided by the principle of the so-called humanistic coefficient.

Opis:
Mimo istnienia etycznych standardów w badaniach społecznych, także tych odnoszących się do badań z udziałem dzieci, eksploracja środowiska dziecięcego nastręcza licznych wątpliwości i jest pełna pułapek. Niniejszy tekst opisuje najważniejsze dylematy etyczne, jakie pojawiły się w toku obserwacji przedszkolaków, mającej na celu badanie przebiegu procesu uczenia się rówieśniczego dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym, a także prezentuje możliwe rozwiązania zaistniałych problemów. Omawiane dylematy dotyczą: zgody dzieci na udział w badaniach, poziomu zaangażowania badacza w interakcje między dziećmi oraz jego skutków dla dobrostanu dzieci i rzetelności zebranych danych, ochrony dzieci przed krzywdą, poufności danych i wykorzystywania wiedzy o badanym terenie. W artykule położono nacisk na dynamikę badań z udziałem dzieci, zależność podejmowanych decyzji etycznych od kontekstu oraz konieczność balansowania obserwatora między rolą badacza a innymi rolami społecznymi.
Despite the existence of ethical standards in social research, including those relating to research that involves children, the exploration of the child's environment gives rise to numerous doubts and pitfalls in that field. The text describes the most important ethical dilemmas that appeared in the course of observing pre-schoolers, aimed at investigating the process of peer learning of pre-school children, and presents possible solutions to those problems. The discussed dilemmas concern: children’s consent to participate in research, the level of researcher's involvement in interactions between children and its effects on children’s welfare and the reliability of the data collected, protection of children from harm, data confidentiality and the use of knowledge of the area surveyed. The paper focuses on the dynamics of the research with the participation of children, the dependence of making ethical decisions on the context and the need to balance the observer between the role of the researcher and other social roles.
