Opis:
New data on chemistry of Cr spinels hosted within the ultramafic massif located in SE Kosovo show variations in their primary composition, which depends on ore and rock types. Spinels form disseminated and vein type ores and accessory spinels in peridotites are characterized by lower Cr and higher Fe concentrations in comparison to spinels making up massive ores. Concentrations of these metals increase in altered spinels both in ores and peridotites. Contents ofMn and Zn tend to be higher in accessory spinels than in spinels occurring in ores. The lower Cr:Fe ratio for Cr-rich spinels in disseminated ores in relations to chromite in massive ores may have an influence on their industrial usefulness. The use of EPMA-WDS technique for detrital spinels should be considered as an effective tool for chromium deposit exploration, especially in greenfield projects, to assess an ultramafic massifpotential for hosting rich ores. Chemical analyses of spinels are recommended in planning a beneficiation process for the low-grade chromite ores, in order to obtain high quality concentrates.

Opis:
We describe a methodology of investigation of both Cu metal matrix and its mineral inclusions that aims at increasing the effectiveness of identifying the type of ore used in metal production. We point to sulphosalt ores as the main source of metal for the Final Neolithic/Early Bronze Age copper artefacts from southern Poland. The inclusions, rich in Ag, As, Sb and Sn, document the type of ore, regardless of the metallurgical process leading to depletion of As and Sb. The copper metal should contain neither Sb nor As, hence both of these elements, if originally present in ore, can be preserved only in inclusions. The concentrations of Ag, Sb, As and Sn in the artefacts investigated, the presence of inclusions, and their chemical composition, are the key indicators for the determination of the mineralogical composition of the original ores. Given the high concentrations of Sb, As and Ag in the Cu metal and mineralogy of the inclusions, the ore must have contained varying proportions of Ag-bearing tetrahedrite (Cu,Fe)12Sb4S13 and tennantite (Cu,Fe)12As4S13. Mineralogical compositions of the copper ores indicate the deposits in Slovakia (Spania Dolina) as the source of metal for the artefacts investigated. The results of Pb and Cu isotopic analyses carried out for this study support those conclusions.

Opis:
The Kamieniec Ząbkowicki Metamorphic Belt (KZMB) is a narrow zone of mainly mica schists, subordinate acid metavolcanics and scarce eclogites, sandwiched between Brunovistulia and the northern tip of the Teplá-Barrandia microplates. Locally occurring high-pressure relics indicate subduction of the metasedimentary succession of the KZMB, the origin and provenance of which remain unclear. Laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) investigations of detrital zircons show that the metapelites represent an Ediacaran-Cambrian sedimentary basin, with a maximum depositional age of 561±9 Ma. This basin was filled with detritus from a source or sources, composed of rocks containing zircons that are mainly Cryogenian-Ediacaran and Palaeoproterozoic in age. No younger component was found in the zircon population studied. The isotopic U-Pb LA-ICP-MS and chemical U-Th-total Pb electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) monazite geochronology data indicate an important regional tectono-metamorphic event at ca. 330 Ma. Though these data do not permit determination of the peak pressure from the peak temperature stages, the event was part of a complex collision of the Saxothuringian plate with Brunovistulia.
