The content of this article is an introduction to a wider spectrum of the issues related to losses of life and material things the Diocese of Lublin suffered after the First World War. The article focuses on two major issues related firstly to the reconstruction of destroyed parish churches in the Diocese of Lublin in the postwar period and using for this purpose state subsidies and funds from the contributions of the parishioners; and secondly, related to the dynamics and intensity of the construction of new parish churches at that time. The rebuilding of churches and buildings connected with them was a priority in the fi eld of renovation and construction projects after World War I. The matter of less importance was to initiate the construction of new churches, erected mainly at the expense of parishioners, rarely with the use of state subsidies. In the 1930s the movement of building parish churches intensified. It was, however, a short-lived process, interrupted by the outbreak of another war. The dynamic growth in the number of new churches, observed in a relatively short period of time was caused, among other things, by the use of cheaper and more readily available wood, which resulted in the increase in wooden churches in the interwar period. The concise characterization of building regulations in the context of the construction of parish churches in the postwar period, the same as in the case of other issues, requires further research and in-depth analysis.

Artykuł, stanowiący studium przypadku, oparty jest na dokumentach z zasobu Deutsches Glockenarchiv w Norymberdze oraz z zespołu Okręgowego Urzędu Likwidacyjnego we Wrocławiu. Poprzez analizę przebiegu procesu rekwizycji i następnie rewindykacji na wybranych dokumentach ukazano problemy rozdysponowania (i rozproszenia) dzwonów w powojennej Polsce. Całkowicie niezależna od siebie działalność Ausschus für die Rückführung der Glocken e.V. oraz polskich instytucji po 1945 r. wyraźnie jest powiązana w likwidacji strat oraz rewindykacji dzwonów. Pełne poznanie omawianych zjawisk jest zdaniem autora nader istotne dla zrozumienia problemów metodologicznych związanych z badaniem strat dzwonów, ale może także być pomocne w dociekaniach dotyczących innych dóbr kultury, których losy po II wojnie światowej ciągle są przedmiotem badań. W przypadku dzwonów istotny pozostaje metodologiczny kontekst definiowania strat, które nie zawsze miały ch arakter wojenny, lecz są wynikiem skomplikowanej sytuacji powojennej dóbr kultury – szczególnie w przypadku Ziem Odzyskanych. Materiały te tworzą tło procederu przemieszczeń (i rekwizycji w kontekście przekazywania do hut) dzwonów w latach 50. XX wieku w Polsce zachodniej i północnej.
The article, which is a case study, is based on documents from the Deutsches Glockenarchiv resource in Nuremberg and from the District Liquidation Office in Wrocław. By analyzing the process of requisitioning and then recovering selected documents, the problems of disposing (and dispersing) the bells after the War in Poland were shown. The activities of ARG and the activities of Polish institutions after 1945 are clearly linked in the liquidation of losses and the recovery of bells. Full understanding of the discussed phenomena is, in the author's opinion, extremely important in understanding methodological problems when examining bells loss, but it may also refer to the issues of other cultural goods whose fate after the Second World War are still the subject of research. In the case of bells, the methodological context of defining losses, which were not always warlike, is significant, but is the result of the situation of post-war cultural goods – especially in the case of so-called Regained Territories. These materials form the background of the displacement (and requisition in the context of the transfer to the smelters) of bells in the 1950s in Western and Northern Poland.

Bells are forms of handicraft which have recently aroused great interest, not only as historical artifacts but also as a rich source of knowledge in humanistic and polytechnic studies. The value of bells is established by their sacred and musical functions. For contemporary researchers, the devotional, commemorative and aesthetic traditions inherent in them are also important. As yet the subject of historic founded objects on the territory of Great Poland has not been addressed by any synthetic study. At the same time, a relatively large amount of archival material has been preserved which could be used fruitfully in creating of a monograph on this subject. Among the church bells on the territory of Great Poland one may find historic objects dating from various epochs: from the middle ages (the mid-15th century) up to contemporary times. The chronological cross section of the preserved objects is the result of chance or purposeful destruction (pillaging, war requisitions) on the one hand, and on the other, founding mainly out of the necessity to equip a church with new instruments. In Great Poland, workshops and foundries are widely represented, as well. Those who created the oldest bells will remain anonymous; beginning in the 16th century it was more and more common to immortalize the artisan’s name and the foundry’s name on the bells. There are numerous works by important workshops operating in more modern times in Gdańsk, Toruń or Wrocław, as well as other local producers in Poznań and Leszno. From the 19th century the dominance of the Poznań foundries is noticeable, and those which were located in Prussia (later the German Imperium), which was, understandably, due to political reasons. After regaining independence in 1919, the great foundries in Przemyśl, Biała koło Bielska, Gdańsk and Poznań came to the forefront. An interesting thread which deserves more detailed research may be seen in the changes in founding customs. The oldest bells are the fruit of founding that was paid for by the church. With the passage of time, the significance of secular patrons of churches grew, and in the most modern period, that of the entire community of the parish. Bells were frequently founded as a devotional offering and as a memorial to the service and piety of donors. The content of the historical and sacred inscriptions that appear on bells is also a valuable source of knowledge about the subject of changes in religiousness. Decorative forms, apart from raising the value of a historic object, allow for the investigation of trends and artistic ambitions among their founders. Identification and recognition of the state of preservation of the historic bells in Great Poland, from the standpoint of protecting them, is essential because of recent, growing threats. On the basis of preliminary research, it may be estimated that only one third of these objects are registered. The Regional Center for the Research and Documentation of Historic Sites in Poznań, in cooperation with the Voivodeship Bureau for the Protection of Historic Sites in Poznań, has undertaken activities which intend to establish the state of preservation of historic bells and identify possible threats. Their results, along with preliminary archival research, will comprise the initial materials for the creation of a synthetic publication.

W artykule przedstawiono symbolikę dzwonów kościelnych w Polsce w XIX i XX wieku oraz omówiono problem kradzieży i przetapiania dzwonów na cele wojenne w czasie I i II wojny światowej. Autor prezentuje dzieje dzwonów w Polsce na przykładzie Osiecznej w Wielkopolsce, wspomina o utracie dzwonów w kościele parafialnym Świętej Trójcy na skutek pożaru, strat wojennych czy o historii dzwonów z osieckiego kościoła protestanckiego. Przedstawiono problematykę rekwizycji i zbiórek stopów miedzi i metali kolorowych od czasów zaborów do powojennej komunistycznej Polski, a także proces restytucji dóbr kultury na nocy traktatu ryskiego, w tym właśnie ewakuowanych przez władze rosyjskie polskich dzwonów kościelnych.

The article constitutes a review of publications and investigations on the ancient bells in Poland. In its both parts, i.e. this discussing the extremely poor Polish literature of the subject and that presenting the state of inventorying of the ancient bells this review points to alarming situation. Nor the satisfactory scientific literature devoted to problems of bell founding neither a comprehensive inventory of ancient bells exist. Hitherto no atelier or workshop carrying out the restoration of metalwork is dealing with objects of this kind. The need to undertake extended investigations on this group of specimens of the Polish artistic handicraft forms both obvious and urgent problem. It is proposed by the author that the investigations be conducted by art historians in cooperation with musicologists as the bells are both musical and artistic objects.
