    Artykuł wychodząc naprzeciw ożywionemu zainteresowaniu problematyką dziewictwa i macierzyństwa Maryi we współczesnej mariologii, stara się ukazać te dwie ważne prawdy w nauczaniu św. Augustyna w oparciu o jego kazania (sermones) wygłoszone na Boże Narodzenie. Jako najbardziej reprezentatywny dla podejmowanej problematyki został wybrany tytuł maryjny Virgo Mater i to on jest przewodnikiem w rozważaniach, które obok wstępu i zakończenia obejmują następujące zagadnienia: Sermones de Natali Domini, Nativitas Christi duplex, Maria Virgo Mater, Virginalis maternitas Mariae oraz Maria Mater et Virgo et Ecclesia mater et virgo. Podstawową metodą pracy jest metoda historiozbawcza, z wyraźnym wykorzystaniem narzędzi hermeneutyki języka, obrazu i symbolu, a także charakterystycznej dla osoby Maryi mistagogii. Uważna lektura maryjnego przesłania wielkiego Ojca i Oratora starożytności chrześcijańskiej prowadzi do wniosku, że tak istotne w tajemnicy Wcielenia – dziewictwo i macierzyństwo Maryi są nie tylko „narzędziami zbawienia”, ale niepowtarzalnymi i indywidualnymi elementami osobowości Maryi. Tak, jak w pierwszej kolejności Dziewica Matka ofiarowała się Boskiemu Synowi, tak teraz ofiaruje się Kościołowi, wszystkim chrześcijanom (omnes Christiani) i całej ludzkości. Kazania na Boże Narodzenie biskupa Hippony w żaden sposób nie mogą mierzyć się z jego wiekopomnymi dziełami, nie sposób jednak nie podkreślić, że swym przesłaniem wyrażonym w charakterystycznej formie i stylu, przez wieki żywiły pobożność wielu pokoleń chrześcijan zwłaszcza w późnej starożytności chrześcijańskiej i wczesnym średniowieczu.
    This article, meeting the lively interest in the issues of virginity and motherhood of Mary in contemporary Mariology, tries to show these two important truths in the teaching of St. Augustine based on his sermones for Christmas. The Marian title Virgo Mater was chosen as the most representative for the issues at hand and it is the guide in considerations which, apart from the introduction and conclusion, include the following issues: Sermones de Natali Domini, Nativitas Christi duplex, Maria Virgo Mater, Virginalis maternitas Mariae and Maria Mater et Virgo et Ecclesia mater et virgo. The basic method of work is the salvation history method, with a clear use of the tools of the hermeneutics of language, image and symbol, as well as the mystagogy characteristic of Mary. Careful reading of the Marian message of the great Father and Orator of Christian antiquity leads to the conclusion that so important in the mystery of the Incarnation - Mary's virginity and motherhood are not only "instruments of salvation", but also unique and individual elements of Mary's personality. As the Virgin Mother offered herself to the Divine Son in the first place, so now she offers herself to the Church, to all Christians (omnes Christiani) and to all humanity. The sermons for Christmas by Bishop Hippo in no way measure up to his memorable works, but it cannot be ignored that with their message expressed in a characteristic form and style, for centuries they nourished the piety of many generations of Christians, especially in late Christian antiquity and the early Middle Ages.

    As the Mother of Jesus, Mather of the Son of God, Virgin Mary is present in the history of salvation: starting from the Old-Testament announcements, through the Bethlehem manger, finishing with the crucifixion on Calvary Hill. The truth is undermined by Jehovah’s Witnes-ses who question the fact that Virgin Mary is the Mother of the Son of God. The author of the paper provokes a substantive discussion with the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ stand, proving that the truth about Mary as the Mother of the Son of God is fully justified in the Holy Scriptures.

    At the center of the world’s attention is man as a being who is called to complete his life in communion with God. To fulfill this purpose, after the fall of the first people, God sends his Son, who received human nature from his mother—the Virgin Mary. The motherhood of Jesus‘ mother is the reason for taking the right attitude toward the woman through whom we received the Creator of life. It is rightly spoken of the Marian veneration, which is shown by the cult of hyperdulia. The doctrine of the Catholic Church takes a position on all the important aspects of this reverence as well as the correct attitude of the believer to mariological topics that resonate in theological circles. An important and irreplaceable role is also played by the teachings of the popes, which are presented in different ways and on different occasions. Pope Francis takes a stand on the issues arising from the participation of the Virgin Mary in the history of salvation. In the study we will point out the theological images of the Virgin Mary in the teachings of Pope Francis as they are contained in the documents of his pontificate.
    Z opracowanego tematu teologicznej ikony/teologicznych ikon (podľa Tvojho uváženia) Matki Bożej w nauczaniu papieża Franciszka wynika, że relacja współczesnego następcy św. Piotra do Bogurodzicy jest bardzo żywa i wielowymiarowa, czego dowodem jest jego zajmowanie stanowiska w różnych kwestiach mariologicznych oraz częste przedstawianie Maryi, Matki naszego Pana, jako wzoru do naśladowania dla wiernych znajdujących się w rozmaitych sytuacjach życiowych. Na podstawie niniejszego przedłożenia można stwierdzić, że papież naświetla relację do Matki Bożej przede wszystkim z punktu widzenia duszpasterskiego oraz że podejmowane przez niego prawdy wiary pozostają na płaszczyźnie stwierdzeń. Ojciec Święty najczęściej zajmuje się tematem wiary Maryi, przedstawiając ją równocześnie jako Matkę ewangelizacji. Poświęca uwagę także wzajemnej relacji Maryi i św. Józefa, podkreślając jego nieustanną gotowość do troskliwej opieki nad Świętą Rodziną. Papież Franciszek często zachęca wiernych do przyjmowania daru Bożego miłosierdzia oraz mówi o Maryi jako o Matce Miłosierdzia, przy czym tak czyni w kontekście chrystologicznym. Jest oczywiste, że papieskie przedstawianie Maryi jako pierwszej uczennicy Pana wywodzi się z jej bliskiej relacji do Jezusa. Mariologia papieża Franciszka nie została skumulowana do jednego konkretnego dokumentu, ale jego myśli mariologiczne znajdują się niby drogocenne perły rozproszone w rozmaitych dokumentach jego nauczania.

    The article analyses the motifs of the Virginity and the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Young Poland poetry. They appear in the writings of many poets, i.e. Maria Konopnicka, Leopold Staff, Jan Kasprowicz, Bronisława Ostrowska, Kazimiera Zawistowska, Józef Ruffer and others. The interest in the Motherhood of God in this period stemmed mostly from a general increase in religiousness but it also had its national and patriotic roots. The expansiveness of the motifs of Virginity and the Annunciation of St. Mary after 1900 was also connected with the 50th anniversary commemoration of the announcement of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. The changes in the world-view in the era initialized by vitalism, the fascination with spirituality, broad-sense purity, folk nature and the Franciscan philosophical trend were also significant for the poetic presentation of St. Mary.

    Matka Boża jest szczytem ludzkiej świętości. Stoi ona na czele wszystkich świętych, którym Kościół prawosławny oddaje cześć. W artykule omawianych jest kilka aspektów kultu Bogurodzicy: narodziny jej kultu, tytuły używane w prawosławiu wobec Matki Bożej, jej natura oraz różne sfery kultu. Kult Bogurodzicy, istniejący od początku istnienia Kościoła, zakorzeniony jest w Piśmie Świętym oraz Tradycji, a bazuje na jej relacjach z Synem, Bogoczłowiekiem Jezusem Chrystusem. Chociaż Bogurodzica jest najdoskonalszym człowiekiem i swą świętością przewyższa cały świat anielski, to cześć jej oddawana zdecydowanie różni się od chwały należnej wyłączenie Trójjedynemu Bogu. Kult Bogurodzicy nie służy umniejszaniu chwały oddawanej Chrystusowi, będącego źródłem wszelkiej świętości, w tym Swojej Matki, lecz potęgowaniu tej chwały. Dlatego też w Kościele prawosławnym Matka Boża jest zawsze wychwalana i przedstawiana z Chrystusem i pośród innych świętych, jako wyraz wspólnoty celebrującej i modlitewnej, a oddawanie czci Bogurodzicy związane jest ze stawianiem jej za najwyższy z możliwych wzór do naśladowania dla ludzi wierzących.
    The Mother of God is the best example of human holiness. She stands at the head of all the saints venerated by the Orthodox Church. This article discusses several aspects of the cult of the Mother of God: the birth of her cult, titles of the Mother of God used in the Orthodox Church, her nature and the various ways of veneration. The cult of the Mother of God, which has existed since the beginning of the Church, is rooted in Scripture and Tradition. It is based on her relationship with her Son, the God-Man Jesus Christ. Although the Mother of God is the most perfect human and her holiness exceeds the angelic world, this cult is very different from the glory that is given exclusively to the Triune God. The cult of the Mother of God is not isolated from the glory given to Jesus Christ. It is based not only from her personal virtues, but above all on her unique role in the economy of salvation. The cult of the Mother of God does not decrease the glory given to Christ, Who is the source of all holiness, including His Mother, but increases that glory. Therefore, in the Orthodox Church, the Theotokos is always praised and represented with Jesus Christ and among other saints, as an expression of the community of celebration and prayer. The veneration of the Mother of God is also closely associated with presenting her as the highest possible model of life for all believers.

    John Paul II remarked, in his famous Letter to Women, that the “sons of the Church” also contributed to undermining the dignity of women over the centuries. Can John Cassian be counted amongst them? It was he who spread the doctrine of the Desert Fathers in the West, and some, such as Anatole France, accuse them of entertaining hatred towards women. By analysing the writings of John Cassian, we discover, however, that, besides the many interesting texts of his, uncommon in Christian literature, in which he talks of God as a mother, and alongside the fervent invitation to Christians to honour the Blessed Virgin Mary, the texts which concern women contain not a trace of discrimination. In his writings, woman is not inferior to man, either by nature or by virtue. On the contrary, there are times when he holds them out as examples to be followed for their great faith and virtue. If, at times, he also presents woman with reference to some vice, he does so only to illustrate the virtue of some other person. Generally speaking, therefore, the vision of woman found in his writings is basically positive, and it finds a place naturally in his ascetical doctrine of mediocritas. It was certainly not he who, by his writings, contributed to undermining the dignity of women.
