Opis:
De medicina by Aulus Cornelius Celsus is the oldest preserved and at the same time the most important source of knowledge about medicine in the Western world until the first century AD. We do not know much about Celus, why De Medicina was forgotten between the 2nd and 9th centuries AD, and whether Celsus was a practicing physician. Was he a professional doctor or surgeon, or just a layperson with medical knowledge? Only one answer will be correct. "Today, De Medicina can be read for the benefit and interest of both physicians and non-professional readers because of its historical value.”

Opis:
Early traces of Psychosomatics in fiction and particularly in drama can be found in pathbreaking texts by Friedrich Schiller, Georg Büchner, and Arthur Schnitzler. These medical doctors pay close attention to the mind-body problem. They transfer their observations into poetry, creating world literature. As sons of doctors, they rebelled against their fathers as well as some of the dominant concepts of medicine and society. Friedrich Schiller. It were the plays about freedom: „Die Räuber“ (1782) „Don Carlos“ (1787) and „Wilhelm Tell“ (1804) which established Friedrich Schiller’s fame; Schiller, son of a surgeon (Wundarzt), studied medicine at the military academy in Stuttgart. Before the successful premiere of „Die Räuber” in Mannheim, the budding regimental doctor has drawn up three academic studies dealing with philosophic, physiologic, and psychosomatic issues. Georg Büchner. The playwriter and private lecturer Georg Büchner can be considered a precursor of Psychosomatics within scientific medicine. His father was a surgeon and the district doctor of Darmstadt. Georg Büchner’s fierce debates about the issue of the Biedermeier-attitude led him to become a revolutionary. His most important plays are „Dantons Tod“ (1835) and „Woyzeck“ (1836). Arthur Schnitzler. Towards the end of the 19th century, the doctor, dramatist, and storyteller Arthur Schnitzler who was the son of a laryngologist in Vienna linked Literature and Psychoanalysis to represent processes of the inner life. These efforts were based on his works about hypnotic and suggestive therapies of functional (psychogenic) disorders. He developed with Lieutenant Gustl (1900) und Fräulein Else (1924) the narrative form of the „internal monologue” for the German language. The article introduces 33 poets, doctors, rebels, for example, Francois de Rabelais and Johann Christian Günther, John Keats and Justinus Kerner, or Alfred Döblin and Rainald Götz. In the 20th century, poets and doctors like Harriet Straub, Charlotte Wolff and Hertha Nathorff, who were engaged in the women’s movement, joined them. These writers have a unique sensorium to perceive what might be significant for them as doctors and poets, what art and medicine are about, and what effects their lives because it affects them. Whichever observations and adventures they transform into literature: it is the medical work that provides experiences about life and pain.

This paper is an attempt to examine the senses and meanings attributed by physicians to the medical profession. The collected material is part of a larger project devoted to the physician-patient relationship reconstructed on the basis of individual narrations provided by physicians. The conducted research is closely linked to the qualitative perspective: Interpretative Paradigm and Interpretive Paradigm. The study was performed in the period 2015-2017. The examined group consisted of 16 subjects (6 female and 10 male physicians) from several provinces of Poland who were highly esteemed (subjective opinions) by their patients. The empirical data were collected by means of narrative interviews and the methodology applied for the analysis of the content was that of phenomenography.

According to the researchers, the most intriguing and fascinating work at the Corpus Hippocraticum is the treatise De prisca medicina. It consists of 24 parts in which Hippocrates argues that the human organism is a blend of various substances or humors. Having set forth humoral theory, Hippocrates criticizes the hypothesis about the causes of diseases independent of this theory. Hippocrates medicine, due to the way it is practiced, should be treated as τέχνη, and this term can be translated as proficiency, craftsmanship, skills, craft, and art. Medicine should not use hypotheses or generalizations but should be based on experience and research. The doctor was a researcher, but above all a craftsman, accompanied by students and other doctors, with whom he analyzed every case of disease.

This article considers how popular/spreadable misogyny enters into Doctor Who fans’ discourse communities via fan-cultural appropriation, mixing external political and internal fan discourses. This can oppose fannish communal norms such as “convivial evaluation” and “ante-fandom”. The theoretical perspective taken in the article combines work on toxic fandom with anti-fandom to thus understand fan toxicity as “multiphrenic”, i.e. drawing on multiple discourses and self-investments, including responding to its own anti-fans. The article goes on to examine YouTube voiceover-commentary videos from one communally-prominent Whotuber representing Not My Doctor anti-fandom, showing how they use devices such as the acousmetre and “stripped down” subjectivity to open a projective space for toxic fandom and enact a flat affect characterising what is termed “performative rationality”. Crucially, leftwing narratives of toxicity and hate are completely inverted to the extent that Doctor Who and the BBC are presumed, without evidence, to “hate” straight white male conservative fandom.

Aim: The increasing staff shortages in Polish surgery incline towards posing the following questions: What are the reasons for the reluctance of Polish doctors in training and residents to specialize in this field of medicine? What measures could be pursued to raise the interest of students and trainees in specializing in general surgery? The aim of this paper is to attempt to answer these questions. Material and methods: From August 5 to December 30, 2019, an online survey of doctors in training and resident doctors was conducted. The study covered 2,498 people. Results: The key reason indicated by young doctors of both sexes was the disproportion between the level of remuneration and professional responsibility. Other most commonly reported reasons include: high overtime, physical and mental strain at work, and fear of not being allowed by senior colleagues to perform surgery. Conclusions: In view of the aging Polish surgical staff and a decreasing number of young doctors interested in this field of medicine, it is necessary to introduce changes into their mode of education.

The statutory limitations on issuing official orders were examined. A broader problem was also raised – violations of basic constitutional principles and civil rights.

Introduction: Sending and receiving non-verbal messages between the doctor and the patient is very important and it has an influence for the quality of health care. The aim of present studies was to determine the influence of some non-verbal communication factors including modern technology using by doctors for patient’s satisfaction after the examination. Materials and methods: We have asked 597 patients. We have used NDEPT Standard Scale - (Nonverbal Communication in doctor – elderly patient transactions: Development of a tool). The authors of the scale let us use it in Poland. Results: Patients were satisfied with the examination in following situations: during the examination they could see the telephone, computer, medical items and other equipment; the distance between the doctor and the patient was less than 61 cm and there were no physical obstacles; during the examination the doctor was face to face to the patient (angle 180 or 90) and he was using gestures; the eyes of the doctor were in the same line as the eyes of the patient. Conclusions: The skill of the right communication is an important factor in medicine, but it is often underestimated. But we must know that apart from knowledge the efficiency of therapy and the efficiency of diagnostics depend on the right relation between doctors and patients. Skills which are necessary to the right interaction between the doctor and the patient are usually nonverbal.

Edith Stein is widely recognised as a saint, a martyr, a victim of the Holocaust and a female philosopher – but can she be a Doctor of the Church? So far, thirty-seven figures, including four women, carry the title due to their so-called ‘eminent doctrines’, eminentes doctrinae. For centuries, a procedural difficulty existed in awarding the titles to martyrs, however, in the second decade of the 21st century, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints reached a conclusion that martyrdom is not, in principle, an obstacle in awarding the title. A question, therefore, can be posed: does the legacy of someone among the Christian martyrs fulfill the criteria of the Church’s Doctorate? The aim of this article is to investigate the criteria for conferral of the title of the Doctor of the Church, prime among which is a criterion called eminens doctrina, and apply them to one example, that of Edith Stein. In doing so, I consider the question purely historically and philosophically, starting out with definitions of the Father of the Church and the Doctor of the Church in part one (available below). In the second part of the article (available in 2024), I ask what aspects of the female martyr’s theology, philosophy and spirituality fulfill the criteria of an eminent doctrine, as formulated in the Church’s documents, and which are insufficient or lacking. In order to highlight the nature of a particular criterion, I contrast Stein’s case with other recently debated cases, such as those of Irenaeus of Lyons and John Paul II.

A doctor’s adaptation to medical activity has a great influence on the effectiveness of his professional activity. The objective: to explore individual psychological predictors of the formation of maladaptation states of internship doctors for the development of a system for their diagnosis, correction and psychoprophylaxis. A comprehensive clinical-psychological, psychodiagnostic and clinical-anamnestic examination of 213 internship doctors of the first year of training atKharkovNationalMedicalUniversity, 116 women and 97 men, aged 22-25 years old had been conducted. It had been established that internship doctors are characterized by feelings of internal tension and dissatisfaction, decreased mood, irritability, anxiety, long-term uncertain negative emotions, unmotivated fears, self-doubt, doubts about making decisions, decline in intellectual activityin conjunction with increased exhaustion and withdrawal mercurial attention. We have developed a system of medical and psychological support during the professional training period depending on the type of disadaptation. The psychotherapeutic complex in the internship doctors included the use of rational psychotherapy, autogenous training (psychotonic version of Shogham-Mirovsky), art therapy, progressive muscle relaxation by Jacobson, cognitive-behavioral therapy of Beck, autogenous training in the modification of Lebedinsky - Bortnik, etc. were used. The results of a three-year catamnestic study proved the effectiveness of the proposed system of psychotherapeutic correction of disorders of adaptation, positive dynamics of the mental state was noted, the maladaptive states were reduced; 92.6% of the examined recurrences of the violations of adaptation did not occur.

IntroductionPatient’s confidence is very important in patient – doctor communication. It is very vital when we talk about efficient medical care because it can improve this care significently. It is particularly important for people who can not contact with it easily. Thanks to watching relations between patient and doctor we can get to know the way the patient judges references of the doctor during his professional activities. The aim of the thesisThe aim of these studies was to estimate the level of patient’s confidence after the last medical appointment. The studies were made with the help of Anderson and Dedrick scale. ResultsPatients were satisfied after the appointment when during the examination they could see a telephone and a computer on the desk, medical equipment and other medical things. The doctor was closer than 61 cm from them and patients could not see any physical barriers. During the examination the position of the doctor was open, he used gestures and he was sitting face to face to the patient (angle 180° or 90°). His eyes were at the same level as patient’s eyes. ConclusionsThe ability of proper communication with the patient is a very important element of medical care. However, it is often underestimated.
