Opis:
Computational and interactive technologies are ubiquitous and play an increasingly important role in our daily lives. From the oral language to the written word and printing, we have been building and expanding our capacity to provide information and present it through fictional or non-fictional narratives, allowing newfangled models through which we learn and interpret the world. As new representations transformed these new digital environments, through procedural, encyclopedic, spatial, and participative affordances, narratives have also changed and afforded a set of different scenarios, where users are given the possibility to experience and understand the same system by exploring different paths. Interactive digital narratives are open and complex works that cross different approaches, research fields, and emerging technologies, but are always shaped by interaction, from creation to reception. They also explore social, cultural, ideological, and aesthetic elements, where it is significant to comprehend how these computational formats can help us to allow new positions and points of view, modeling how we construct meaning, examining the relationship between user and technology and how human beings perceive the world. Analyzing the aesthetic qualities of the Netflix production Bandersnatch through immersion, agency, and transformation, and combining these with an analytical framework that studies the dimensions of user experience, we develop a close reading, that analyzes the development of aesthetic relations and its transformational potential in interactive digital narratives.

Opis:
Critical thinking, media literacy (MIL) and digital and creative competencies are essential for young people to thrive. School can play a fundamental role in raising awareness towards conscientious and creative media usage, particularly considering today’s adolescents – Gen Z. This is not only the generation most exposed to online contents, but also the one that makes the most use of mobile media to connect, learn, express and actively engage in causes. This research conducted media production activities based on secondary school curricula to explore and promote discussions about citizenship and MIL topics. Digital narratives (DNs) creation activities were co-designed with teachers of various subjects and carried out in two Portuguese schools, involving about 190 students aged between 15 and 18. The results of the exploratory questionnaire to students and the DNs’ content analysis point out that the creation of DNs acts as a lever to promote discussions about citizenship in formal settings and that, despite difficulties related to tools and basic literacies, students appreciate activities that engage them in critical reflection and transformative learning. However, the findings suggest that young people don’t believe that using these languages contributes to making a change or to their voices being heard by adults and institutions.

Opis:
Temporal issues related to digital games go beyond the strictly literary or film studies character of the description and implies technological and marketing issues. It can be outlined by referring to the concept of Andrzej Stoff, who analyzed the spatial dimension of the world of the novel (“delineating space”, “creating”, “functionalizing”, “valorising”). Relating these four detailed issues – constituting the basic subject of description, analysis and interpretation – to temporal aspects, it is appropriate to talk about measuring (conventionalizing, relativizing) time, thematizing, functionalizing and valorizing it. Taking into account the above categories, the most typical concretizations of temporal phenomena can be further defined: functional (classic chronometry, clock, server time, time of a running process), gameplay (real time, relativization, quest time, respawn time), thematic concretizations (e.g. retrospection as a compositional dominant of multimodal narratives) and marketing concretizations (commercialization of time).

Opis:
This paper discusses how socio-communicative practices that originate in oral tradition, with a focus on Brazilian legends, manifest themselves in the digital environment. It foregrounds the production of discourse objects as a category of analysis and approaches the theoretical assumptions of linguistic and cultural studies through an interdisciplinary approach. It is a study of a theoretical-analytical nature that aims to answer the following research questions: How are Brazilian folk narratives constructed in multimodal texts-based interactions in digital environment? How are the objects of discourse constructed in the analyzed texts? The analyzed texts were collected through screenshots of interactions on public Facebook pages. It is hoped that the results will allow us to understand how digital texts are constructed and show how referential processes contribute to text construction and meaning production, deepening studies of language use in digital environments.

Opis:
The present paper deals with the problem of the digital-culture-public-philosophy as a possible response of those philosophers who see the need to face the challenges of the Internet and the visual culture that constitutes an important part of the Internet cultural space. It claims that this type of philosophy would have to, among many other things, modify and broaden philosophers’ traditional mode of communication. It would have to expand its textual, or mainly text-related, communication mode into the aesthetic and visual communication mode. More precisely, philosophers would have to learn how to aestheticize and visualize their ethical (epistemic, ontological, social) narratives by using some digital tools – YouTube clips for example.
