The subject matter described in this paper is the lexicographic work of Zygmunt Wasilewski, a lawyer, politician, columnist, literary critic, which refers to his 19th-century glossary from the Podlasie region. When characterising this small collection of words (282 headwords), the macrostructure and microstructure of the glossary is taken into consideration. Its lexical material is fi rst of all a source of knowledge about the oldest state of Podlasie dialects and research on Polish dialects overall, but it also offers an insight in the methods of this unqualifi ed lexicographer, enthusiast of “folk things”, amateur ethnographer and dialectologist.

This article presents more than 300 semantic units being names of women used in the area of Warmia and Masuria in the period from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century in traditional rural communities. It discusses the semantic diversity of particular groups of lexemes, presents their number, and indicates the extralinguistic reasons which caused the growth of the number of feminine names within certain semantic fields. It also confronts certain specialised sets of lexemes, e.g. the names of unmarried women, with their male counterparts.

This paper presents a derivative-semantic analysis of prefixial verb formations using the prefix prze- that occur in the dialect of Lubola village near Sieradz. Verbs with the u- prefix in the Lubola dialect create categories that denote the following: 1) ‘covering a distance in space, moving something from one place to another’ (e.g. przeciągnąć), or 2) ‘covering a distance in time while performing an action’ (e.g. przebajdurzyć), 3) ‘examining an object in detail’ (e.g. przebadać), 4) ‘performing an action with less-than-necessary intensity or thoroughness’ (e.g. przemyć), 5) ‘transforming, moving from one into another, constant change’ (e.g. przefarbować), 6) ‘crossing a border or permeating into something’ (e.g. przecedzić), 7) ‘performing an action in reference to future’ (e.g. przepowiedzieć), 8) ‘going too far in doing something’ (e.g. przepaskudzić), 9) ‘superseding someone or something in doing something’ (np. przerosnąć), 10) ‘ceasing, interrupting’ (np. przeszkodzić). A portion of the words has been subjected to lexicalization (e.g. przegapić). Among the collected examples there are also some characteristic of the dialect: some formative suffixes in the dialect replace standard Polish formative suffixes za-, e.g. przepaskudzić ‘zapaskudzić’; s-, e.g. przetracić ‘starcić’; wy-, e.g. przemłócić ‘wymłócić’; u-, e.g. przeszyć ‘uszyć’. The recorded verbs also include roots other than those included in standars Polish, such as przeburszować.

Former lexis of Ciechanowiec and surrounding villagesIntroduction includes: a) the synthetic approach to the history of micro-regions – geographic location, ethnic and confessional composition, Krzysztof Kluk Museum of Agriculture, Krzysztof Kluk – a priest, an eighteenth-century naturalist who was born and settled here; b) a description of the microtoponimy of Ciechanowiec; c) a description of the local dialect; d) a list of place names; e) a dialect dictionary in alphabetical order; f) a list of proverbs and phraseological saings. In the dictionary part there is lexical material no longer used today, or so we hear rarely, usually at home, in the family. Using it is subject to certain factors: age of the caller, the themes of conversation, particular emotional situation or the other. The entries record not only the meaning of the word, but also the diversity of phonetic, inflectional, peculiar grammatical forms. The usual entry articles are examples of the use of the word in context, and often phrases and proverbs. Ранее употребляемая лексика города Цехановец и окрестных деревеньВступительная часть исследования состоит из: а) синтетического подхода к истории микрорайона – географическое положение, этнический и религиозный состав, краткий очерк истории Сельскохозяйственного музея имени священника и биолога Кшиштофа Kлюка, родившегося и работавшего в Цехановце в XVIII столетии; б) описания микротопонимии города Цехановец; в) описания местного говора; г) списка географических названий; д) словаря местного диалекта; е) списка пословиц и фразеологических оборотов. В словарь включены лексемы сегодня уже не употребляемые или употребляемые редко, как правило, дома, в семейном кругу. Примнение этой лексики обусловлено некоторыми факторами: возраст собеседника, тема разговора, особое эмоциональное состояние и др. Словарная статья отражает значение лексемы, разнообразие фонетических и морфологических форм, примеры использования слов в контексте.

Connection of etymology and dialect lexicography is bilateral: progress of etymological investigations leads to the analysis of dialectal vocabulary, and composition of the dictionary of many / all dialects of some language requires standardization of initial records. Standardization presupposes removal of specific dialectal structural / phonetic modifications and consideration of the history of language. So, the attraction to etymological analysis of dialect words is useful and even inevitable. The author offers possible solutions of these methodological problems.

The aim of the article is to define the forms of communication of the contemporary Poznań dialect among young people from Poznań and its vicinity. The research part was preceded by a theoretical introduction describing the current state of research on the Poznań dialect, its expansiveness in the public space of the city and its culture-forming and identity character. With regard to the current status of the Poznań Polish language, and above all the forms of its cultivation, the question was asked how interesting they are for the young generation of Poznań residents, on whom the future of this language variety depends. For this purpose, an anonymous survey was conducted with 202 students in three age groups. The analysis verified the active and passive knowledge of the most popular words from the Poznań dialect, the attitude of young people to this language, as well as all current and future forms of its promotion.

Bilingualism has long been observed in Silesia, a part of Poland which lies on the border between three cultures and languages: Polish, Czech and German. Some linguists consider Silesian one of the Polish dialects, others think it should be treated as a separate language. During the communist times the inhabitants of Upper Silesia were discouraged from using the local dialect at school or in public institutions. The situation has changed a lot since 1989 with the promotion of regional studies. Short characteristics of Silesian will be presented in the first part of the paper. The main part of the project presents the results of a questionnaire which focuses on young people's attitudes towards Silesian. The respondents (100 Polish students of English philology) fall into two groups - half of them identify themselves with the region and the other half do not. How many respondents speak Silesian? Where do they use it and how do they evaluate it? What is the linguistic stereotype of a person living in Upper Silesia? These are just a few questions that suggest themselves in the context of the study.

Many research works have been carried out on focus construction in Yoruba and its dialects. These works include the comparison between the focus construction in Yoruba language and the dialects of Yoruba, a comparison between the focus construction in one dialect of Yoruba and the others. But no attention is paid to the comparison between the focus construction in Yorùbá and Èbìrà languages. Findings reveal that despite the fact that Yorùbá and Èbìrà languages belong to two different language families, there are some similarities between their focus constructions. However, the similarities between the two languages are noticed in the dialect of Yorùbá such as Oǹdó dialect. This forms the basis of the discussion in this paper. The data collection relies on the informants who are the native speakers of Òkené (a sub-dialect of Èbìrà language) and Oǹdó dialect (a sub-dialect of Yorùbá language). The informants are between ages 65-70 and have spent their lifetime in their dialect communities. Descriptive approach is adopted for the data analysis.

No region of Russia has such a distinct language of the original features as Kuban - the most southern Black Sea area, caught in the whirlpool of history. W związku z szybkim zanikaniem wiejskiej kultury materialnej opisy językowe artefaktów stają się coraz trudniejsze. Istotnym elementem dopełniającym takie opisy staje się w tej sytuacji ikonografia. Ikonografia jest więc w słowniku gwarowym:1) dopełnieniem definicji;2) szansą weryfikacji definicji;3) pomocą w poprawnym ustawieniu ekspozycji etnograficznych;4) środkiem przedstawienia specyfiki etnograficznej w danym regionie;5) uzupełnieniem opisu etnologicznego;6) środkiem przedstawienia relacji między elementami składowymi artefaktu złożonego konstrukcyjnie.
The rapid disappearance of rural material culture renders linguistic description of artifacts increasingly difficult. In this situation, iconography has become an important element complementing these descriptions. In a dialect dictionary, iconography1) complements the description;2) offers an opportunity to verify the definition;3) helps to correctly orient ethnographic exposition;4) acts as a vehicle for the presentation of the ethnographic specificity in a region;5) supplements the ethnological description;6) is a means of presenting the relations between the constituent parts of a structurally complex artifact.

Research into the phraseological component of dialects in different Ukrainian areas is especially relevant due to the fact that during the last decade the phraseology of dialects has been studied very intensively, despite all the difficulties connected with collecting dialect material and the unrefined methods of their researching. The article is devoted to the structural/semantic description of phraseological units with phytomyn components, which make up the phraseologic/semantic line “unclever, stupid”. The source for this research was material from dictionaries, phrasal dictionaries, and from collections of modern words from three dialects of the Ukrainian language. Analysis of phraseological units and their components in space allowed for the determination of either non-fixed phrases or the absence of their expected components, the firmness of different dialectal phenomena, and system phenomena within phraseology.

The article deals with the essential aspects of the phonetic and, primarily, grammatical system of the Polish immigrant dialect spoken in two villages in Western Siberia: Znamenka (Bogradsky District of the Republic of Khakassia) and Alexandrovka (Krasnoturansky District of Krasnoyarsk Krai). The dialect appeared in the Yeniseysk Governorate of the Russian Empire at the end of 1890s as a result of Polish rural migration from Volhynia to Siberia. Before that, the ancestors of those settlers had moved to Volhynia from Masuria. The examined dialect shows relatively good preservation of its original system. At the same time, it has been strongly influenced by Russian, as the dominant language of its surroundings. The main effect of this intensive contact is the further development of trends that had taken place in the original dialect system, which have been supported by the Russian language.

The aim of this article is to show the forms of promotion and distribution of the Wielkopolska dialect on the Internet. The sources that were used in this study are interviews with respondents residing the międzychodzki district, a survey conducted among young people speaking this dialect and the most popular Internet forms, which affect the behavior of the dialect in the language of the younger generation of users. The article describes: Internet memes, a social networks fanpage, dictionary entries in an electronic form, blogs, music promoted by websites, clothing, and everyday objects that are distributed on auction sites - the author takes into account the use of these forms in order to promote and disseminate the Wielkopolska dialect.
Celem tego artykułu jest wskazanie sposobów promocji i dystrybucji dialektu wielkopolskiego w Internecie. Materiały użyte w tym studium pochodzą z wywiadów z informatorami zamieszkującymi w okolicach Międzychodu, ankiety przeprowadzonej wśród młodych osób używających dialektu oraz obserwacji najpopularniejszych form internetowych, które mają wpływ na zachowanie dialektu w języku młodego pokolenia użytkowników. W artykule opisano: internetowe memy, fanpage’e na portalach społecznościowych, ilustracje z hasłami słownikowymi, blogi, muzykę promowaną w sieci, ubrania i przedmioty codziennego użytku rozprowadzane na internetowych aukcjach. Autor bierze pod uwagę użycie tych form w celu promocji i upowszechniania dialektu wielkopolskiego.

The article discusses of acquiring borrowings in the Ukrainian dialect over the territory of river San, occurring on Polish territory. Examined dialect is classified to south-western team of Ukrainian dialects and because of location it possesses features of insular dialects - peripheral. Assimilation and linguistic interference are on the factors contributing to acquiring borrowings from Polish language. This process, at the present stage of functioning of the dialect, is increasing phenomenon. Full or partial adaptation of Polish borrowings constitutes a contemporary source of enrichment of dialect vocabulary. However, the uses of this dialect retain their national and religions identity, the characteristic feature of East Slavic-Ukrainian lingual area.

Kaya from Novella to FilmThis paper analyses the transformation of K. Quien's novella Kaya into a screenplay adaptation and a film of the same name by eminent Croatian director Vatroslav Mimica. The analysis points out both significant characteristics of the transformation of the text and the transformation of the portrayed Mediterranean urban area (a crime in Trogir), as well as the linguistic stylisation of the characters' Trogir dialect, which contributes to the atmosphere of the film. Discussion of this film has so far only unfolded on the basis of a comparison of Quien's novella and Mimica's film. This analysis thus contributes important information about the structural and narrative characteristics of the unpublished screenplay, which sheds more light on the paths towards the creation of this Croatian film,which is considered V. Po drugie, omawiana jest stylizacja językowa, wykorzystanie cech dialektu trogirskiego, przyczyniające się do stworzenia atmosfery filmu. Dotychczasowa dyskusja o filmie jedynie powierzchownie dotykała związków z nowelą Quiena na poziomie porównawczym. Niniejszy artykuł przynosi ważne informacje o strukturalnych i narracyjnych cechach niepublikowanego dotąd scenariusza, co rzuca nowe światło na proces tworzenia filmu, uznawanego za najwybitniejsze dzieło Mimicy i jeden z najlepszych chorwackich filmów w ogóle. Kaya, od novele do filmaU ovom radu analizira se transformacija novele K. Quiena Kaja, ubit ću te preko scenarističke adaptacije u istoimeni film istaknutoga hrvatskoga redatelja Vatroslava Mimice. U analizi se ističu ne samo bitne značajke transformacije teksta nego i transformacija predočene mediteranske urbane sredine (zločin u Trogiru) te jezična stilizacija trogirskoga govora likova, koji doprinosi ambijentalnom ugođaju filma. Do sada se o filmu raspravljalo samo na temelju usporedbe Quienove novele i Mimičina filmskoga ostvarenja, pa ova analiza donosi neke važne podatke o strukturnim i narativnim značajkama neobjavljenoga scenarija, čime se jače osvjetljavaju putovi kreacije toga hrvatskoga filma, koji se smatra najboljim redateljskim ostvarenjem V. Mimice i jednim od najboljih hrvatskih filmova.

The article is about folk and regional Polish on the basis of forum.mlingua.pl users’ opinions. It refers to terminology of dialectology, characteristic of forum.mlingua.pl users, positive and negative attitude to dialect manifested by its appraisal. The authoress compares statements with the definitions made by researchers of dialectology. Crucial for this research are distinction between folk and regional Polish and regard for local communities (e.g. Silesian, Kashubians). The users of forum.mlingua.pl are interested in regional Polish, they know linguistic terminology, draw attention to cultural value of folk and regional Polish.

On the map of territorial diversity of Polish, big cities are characterised by the language used by their inhabitants: the city dialects. A valuable quasi-literary source of Bydgoszcz city dialect is Zbigniew Raszewski’s Pamiętnik gapia [‘Onlooker’s diary’]. The richest inventory of Bydgoszcz lexical stock is Jerzy SulimaKamiński’s trilogy Most Królowej Jadwigi [‘Queen Jadwiga Bridge’]. Other important sources include the novels Obóz Wszystkich Świętych [‘All Saints’ Camp’] by Tadeusz Nowakowski and Kamienny bruk [‘Stone Paving’] by Wiesław Rogowski. In the Bygdoszcz city dialect, apart from lexical phenomena, one can also identify occasional inflectional and phonetic peculiarities, as well as syntactic constructions of the type ‘have’ + accusativus cum infinitivo or ‘be … years old’. The author of “Queen Jadwiga Bridge” uses – as a linguistic building stock – the city dialect that he knows from his home, so that one can assume that it faithfully represents the authentic language Bydgoszcz inhabitants. The Bydgoszcz dialect exhibits similarities with the Poznań dialect because of their locations (both lie within the boundaries of the Great Polish dialectal area) and a common history of Germanisation.
Wyróżnikiem wielkich miast jest język, jakim posługują się na co dzień ich mieszkańcy, nazywany gwarą miejską. Cennym źródłem gwary bydgoskiej, choć nie stricte literackim, jest Pamiętnik gapia Zbigniewa Raszewskiego. Największy zapisany zasób leksyki bydgoskiej zawiera trylogia Jerzego SulimyKamińskiego pt. Most Królowej Jadwigi. Poza tym wymienić trzeba m.in. powieści: Obóz Wszystkich Świętych Tadeusza Nowakowskiego i Kamienny bruk Wiesława Rogowskiego. W gwarze bydgoskiej, obok zjawisk leksykalnych, występują nieliczne zjawiska fleksyjne i fonetyczne oraz konstrukcje składniowe typu mieć plus accusativus cum infinitivo oraz być x lat starym. Autor Mostu Królowej Jadwigi używa – jako tworzywa językowego – gwary bydgoskiej, znanej mu z rodzinnego domu, więc można uznać, że język, jakim posługują się bohaterowie i narrator tej powieści, to język autentycznych mieszkańców Bydgoszczy. Gwara bydgoska wykazuje wspólnotę cech z gwarą miejską Poznania. Wpływ na to mają: położenie obu miast (dialekt wielkopolski) i ich historia (germanizacja).

The article is dedicated to studying the assimilative processes in the Bernese German phonetics. It points out the dynamic character of the modern Bernese German sound system and shows that the realization of the Bernese German vowels and consonants is influenced by both, the other Swiss German dialects especially the Zurich German on the one hand and the Standard German language on the other. The Ber¬nese German vowel and consonant system develops in accordance with the universal principles such as saving of pronunciation efforts and acceleration of the speech tempo. Thus, it is subject to modifications like sound weakening, co-articulation or redistribution of syllables. At the same time, there still remain specific characteristics of the Bernese sounds realization that are connected to pronunciation habits of Bernese dialect speakers. These include the complete muting of semi-voiced consonants, the use of tran¬sient sounds in the intervocalic position at the syllable and word boundaries as well as the high functional strain of the vocalic allophone of the phoneme. /l/.

The article describes the possibility of a project activity – creating a school dialect dictionary. Attention was drawn to the importance of regional education and dialect as a component of regional culture. Also described are the students’ preparations for the project, specific solutions adopted in the dictionary (the way of writing, entry structure), the use of work effects (dictionary) in the school didactics.

The present study concentrates on the issue of exoethnonyms and, in particular, exoethnonyms replacing orthonyms in the vocabulary of Slavonic urban dialects – namely, the urban dialect of Warsaw, the Hantec slang of Brno and the urban dialect of Moscow. Based on the data extracted from dictionaries, it was possible to select such designations. From the linguistic point of view, these nominations are either occasionalisms or names more deeply rooted in the lexical system of the urban dialects in question. The article includes the analysis and classification of the research data in terms of the linguistic and extralinguistic motivation and axiological evaluation of particular items.

The aim of this article is to draw attention to the characteristics of the vocabulary of police officers in criminal departments. Because questions of their dialect may be multilateral, this paper presents the most typical features of the language of the police officers from a formal point of view, including the way of perceiving and valuing selected elements of the surrounding reality. As an illustration I will use lexicon material extracted from the crime novels by Katarzyna Bonda, author of the crime series with the profiler Hubert Meyer. The nature of the work Hubert Meyer does determines the characteristic of the language that he and his colleagues use in their investigative activities when they talk about reality and its elements. The police language in Bonda’s novels is also a language that police officers use e.g. in their free time. Attached to the work is a glossary of the police language where the individual lexemes, phrases and expressions of the police officers are explained, as well as the novels from which they come.

His personality is also depicted in the article as being an au-thoritative old man, a good builder, a traveller, a talented storyteller, and a decent man.

The horse is not only an animal for the farmer, is also a valuable “tool” for working on the land and a friend sharing hardships. In this article I will try to determine how users perceive of a horse by the dialect, in his simple, but deeply traditional memories about horses. The paper is a clear two–part structure. The first part contains an image interpretation and its horse hierarchy, the second part presents the dialect texts, first spoken, next written, told by older residents explored the environment, written in a simplified manner, based on and which have been analyzed.

The article presents the state of dialectological documentation for the area of today’s Gniezno County. The author statistically summarized Adam Tomaszewski’s pre-war materials, providing the number of index cards, and listed the research points and hours of recordings for the Atlas of the language and folk culture of Wielkopolska. Then the author cited statistics for contemporary materials, interpreted as field explorations after 2000, deposited in the audio library of the Dialectology Laboratory of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Explorations related to the development of dictionaries as part of the Wielkopolska Regional Dictionary series have been distinguished, which extend the source database many times in relation to its existing content. This situation proves the need to conduct field research, e.g. using the educational project method.

In its structure and conception the ideographic dialectal dictionary of the Bulgarian language differs considerably from all interpretative dialectal dictionaries published so far. The words offered in it make it possible to present from another aspect a complete picture of the lexical wealth and the denotative resources of the Bulgarian dialects. The choice of different motivational features in the formation of derivatives created in the various dialects to denote the same entity is related to the ethnocultural specificity of the native speakers (or users) of Bulgarian. The completion and publication of the first volume (A–D) are preceded by the make-up of the vocabulary of the whole dictionary, which gives an idea of its structure and character. The collected material, which is yet to be structured into dictionary entries, is arranged according to the semantically corresponding literary designations presented alphabetically. While collecting and processing the material, an endeavour was made to encompass diachronically the whole territory of the Bulgarian language, making use not only of Bulgarian published sources. This is the first generalizing lexicographical work which includes data from all the dialects representing the lexical system both from the Bulgarian language region and from the Bulgarian diaspora. The ideographic dictionary will make it possible to use the collected and lexicographically processed material for academic purposes by making it accessible to Bulgarian and foreign linguists in studying the history of the Bulgarian language and the tendencies in its development. It will contribute as well to the scientific explanation of the peculiarities which not only connect but also differentiate the Bulgarian language from the other Slavic and Balkan languages.

In the article it is shown that folklore and ethnographic records are an important source of historical research into Podillya dialects. S. Rudanskiy, K. Sheykovskiy, A. Kopitskiy, A. Dyminskiy, Marko Vovchok and O. Markovych played an important role in researching oral folk art. The author of the research analysed the texts of Ukrainian fairytales, which were recorded in the Podillya region in the middle of the 19th century by A. Dyminskiy and S. Rudanskiy, and composed by M. Levchenko. The texts of these fairytales fix a great number of Podillian phonetical features, which still exist even now and which demonstrate the remoteness and vitality of these dialects. It has been proved that only authentic texts can serve as a valuable and reliable source for linguistic study of the dynamic Podillyan people’s dialect.

The overview of the dialects of the Lublin region from 1932. Kuraszkiewicz’s account has been confronted with later research and today’s state of dialectal diversification of the Lublin region. The multifaceted character of the linguistic analyses included in the monograph has been pointed out as well as the fact that they perform an important function in current dialectal research. They are still a source of inspiration and discovery of the ethnically, culturally and ethnographically complex linguistic diversification of the Lublin region.

Although Sri Lanka was a site of colonization of the Portuguese, Dutch and (under the treaty of Amiens in 1802) British, it was the English language that had the strongest infl uence on the indigenous population of the island as the earlier colonizers were less interested in disseminating their culture. Taking into consideration the fact that English was established in Sri Lanka by missionaries and British officers, it can be assumed that the language brought to the island of Ceylon was the Standard English of the turn of the 19th century. Exploiting data from International Corpus of English – Sri Lanka and articles on Sri Lankan English, the present study contains a comparison of contemporary Sri Lankan English and the English of the period when the language was brought to the Island (early 19th century). Thus, an effort is made to show the conservative features of the language of the first British settlers, which survive in English spoken in contemporary Sri Lanka.

The aim of this paper was to reduce confusion around the concepts of dialect and language. Although linguists often use separate terms, there are no linguistic criteria to make a distinction between the two. It is also difficult to delineate the boundaries of specific languages or dialects. Classification attempts may lead to developing linguistic hierarchy, therefore it is necessary to know that any distinction is artificial and arbitrary. In view of no clear definitions of dialect and language, the use of a neutral term “variety” is preferred. Human perception of linguistic reality – diverse varieties and their mutual relations – is the outcome of subjective, political decisions and organised social activity. Distinction between a dialect and a language is volatile – e.g. colloquial Latin had evolved into dialects that, over time, transformed into the Romance languages. The evolution of the Castilian language on the Iberian Peninsula shows how social and political factors, rather than linguistic ones, influence the actual status of a linguistic variety.

Autorka recenzji przekonuje, że pracę tę można uznać za prawdziwe odkrycie naukowe, jednak z powodu przyjętych w niej rozwiązań formalnych oraz niesprzyjających okoliczności nie trafiła ona do szerszego grona odbiorców.

The idea of the following paper is to show that Adolf Dygacz’s song collections coming from different parts of Silesia provide precious data for dialectological studies. The characteristic features of the dialect that could be traced in the lyrics are discussed here. Special attention was paid to differences concerning phonetics in particular that appear in the lyrics and influence the dialect. Furthermore, the study also presents how the specific culture of the region as well as its past are described by means of the special vocabulary. It is postulated that the song collections were used in the school and academic education. It is also suggested that numerous lyrics of the songs that have not been published yet were prepared for publication. Scholars specializing not only in folklore studies and ethnology but also in dialectology should participate in the whole process.
W artykule wykazano, że zbiory pieśni Adolfa Dygacza z różnych subregionów Śląska stanowią cenny materiał dla badań dialektologicznych. Omówiono właściwości gwarowe występujące w tekstach pieśni. Zwrócono uwagę na zróżnicowanie dialektu śląskiego (zwłaszcza w warstwie fonetycznej), które się w nich ujawnia. Pokazano, jak w gwarowych słownictwie odzwierciedla się swoistość kulturowa regionu i jego przeszłość. Postulowano, by zbiory pieśni wykorzystywać w edukacji szkolnej i akademickiej. Sugerowano także, by przygotować do druku liczne teksty pieśni, które do tej pory nie zostały opublikowane. W przygotowaniu redakcyjnym pieśni powinni uczestniczyć nie tylko folkloryści i etnolodzy, ale też dialektolodzy.

This paper focuses on systematizing current research on the Moscowurban dialect and qualifying this category to the developed methodology in the study of Czech and Polish urban dialects. The attempt to systematize this formation provides a basis for the confrontational cultural-lingual study of the urban space of the Warsaw urban dialect, Brno slang – Hantec, and Moscow urban dialect.

Artykuł przedstawia gwarę miejską w kontekście determinanta tożsamości regionalnej. Autorka analizuje definicje gwary i wskazuje na zmieniający się odbiór tego pojęcia, jak i jego charakter i obecną rolę. Omówiona jest także tożsamość regionalna i jej korelacja z gwarą. Niniejsze rozważania eksplikowane są na przykładzie współczesnej gwary miejskiej Poznania, która mimo coraz mniejszej liczby czynnych użytkowników wykazuje wzrost popularności i chęć kultywowania w formach pozwalających postrzegać ten język w aspektach tożsamości regionalnej. Gwara poznańska analizowana jest w kontekście historycznym, gdzie wskazano na istotny wpływ języka niemieckiego oraz przemian gospodarczo-społecznych miasta na kształtowanie się języka mieszkańców Poznania. Artykuł rozpatruje gwarę miejską także we współczesnym ujęciu, omawiając jej występowanie w radiu, tekstach i książkach.
This paper presents urban dialect as a determining factor of local identity. The author analyses the definitions of dialect and shows the changing perception of this concept, as well as its nature and the current role. Regional identity and its correlation with the dialect is also addressed. The present considerations are explored through the example of the present-day urban dialect of the city of Poznań, which, despite of decreasing number of active users, shows an increase in popularity and willingness to cultivate it in forms that allow the language to be perceived in terms of regional identity. Local dialect of the city of Poznań is analysed in a historical context, showing the significant influence of the German language and the economic and social changes of the city on the language formation. The paper also investigates urban dialect from a modern perspective, discussing its appearance in radio, texts and books.

The study is set up to examine Hausa terms and concepts used over the Nigeria electronic media. Specifically the study analyses the use of Hausa in the eastern Hausa dialect area where we sample Katsina and Sokoto States in Nigeria. Through various instruments of research, the study comes up with various performances of the Hausa Broadcasters in terms of lOVs, IOAs, IOCs, and IOls. The study identifies that there are various degrees of variations among Hausa Broadcasters in the use of terms and concepts in the electronic media in the western Hausa dialect area. These variations are observed at different levels i.e. among Hausa Broadcasters in the same electronic media within the same dialect area and across electronic media. These variations occasion various degrees of performances among Hausa Broadcasters in terms of IOAs. The study further identifies various degrees of performances in terms of IOCs, which result in various degrees of performances in terms of IOIs.

Preserved dialectal features and the Polish influence in old believers' dialect on the example of a representative of the older generation in the Augustów regionPolish Old Believers constitute a bilingual ethno-cultural minority.Their bilingualism has developed especially in the 20th century, and since then it has been modified under the influence of Polish language. On the one hand, there are Polish borrowings, insertions and loan-translations in Russian Old Believers’ dialect. On the other hand, the Old Believers have preserved many dialectal features from their region of origin – Pskov region in north-Western Russia. The author attempts to reveal, how many and which Pskov language features are still present in the Old Believers’ dialect. The analysis is basing on an idiolect of a representative of the old generation of the community of our interest.  Сохраненные диалектные черты и польское влияние в русском говоре представителя старшего поколения старообрядцев августовского регионаПольские старообрядцы составляют этнокультурное меньшинство. Их билингвизм стал развиваться начиная с ХХ столетия, и с тех пор их русский диалект подвергался особосильномувлиянию польского языка. С одной стороны, в старообрядческом говоре наблюдаются польские заимствования, вставки и кальки. С другой стороны, старообрядцы сохранили многие диалектные средневеликорусские черты. Данная статья является попыткой выяснить, какие черты диалектов из окрестностей Великих Лук, Пскова и Новгорода до сих пор существуют в говоре старообрядцев. Анализ опирается на идиолект представителя старшего поколения исследуемой общины.

Taking into account that a dialect is a certain type of stylistic-communicative, semantic-cultural and functional category the aims of this article constitute: 1) an attempt to settle the matter of commercial valorization of dialect and its meaning towards the culture, language and communication, and 2) an illustration of the selected advertisement mechanisms connected with the ways of introducing a code, specific to the dialect and emphasizing the value of the product. The advertisements in which the textual valorization of dialect indicators is revealed, supported by structural indicators (dialogues, the presence of the narrator/narrators, the composition of utterances which include expressively marked text operators – modulants and lexical collocations subjected to the persuasive procedures) were described by the exploitation of pragmalinguistic and cognitive (theory of meaning fields) research conceptions with their methodological solutions.

This paper discusses the content of amateur dialect dictionaries related to the Masuria region, which have been published in recent years, as well as the presentation methods of the lexical material. It was also pointed to the fact that interest in dialects has increased and the trend for revitalising various dialectal systems has been noticeable lately. The analysis of Masuria dialect dictionaries allowed for the number of entries, applied graphy, method of defi ning the meanings of entries. The importance of the amateur material for enriching the resource of professionally compiled dictionaries was noticed, at the same time indicating numerous shortcomings in the word register preparation method, which arose from insufficient skills of the authors.

This paper is an attempt to reconstruct the picture of a groundbreaking historical event captured in oral accounts from Warmia. To this end, terms from the fi eld of ethnolinguistics, in particular linguistic worldview and point of view, have been applied. The analysis of the texts has revealed a clear opposition marked by lexemes polski (Polish) and niemiecki (German) and their derivatives as well as positive evaluation of what is local (Warmian). At the lexical level, borrowings from German (welować ‘to elect’), dialectal lexis (poszczwać ‘to bait’) and a signifi cant share of collocations referring to the situation of elections (odprawiać wiece) can be distinguished. What plays an important role in the picture of the plebiscite is the language exponents of negative phenomena and emotions, e.g. acts of violence, feeling of fear. The predominant stylistic devices employed are metonyms and metaphors.

The translation of an artificial dialect in David Mitchell’s novel “Cloud Atlas” The purpose of the present study is an analysis of the techniques applied by the translators of David Mitchell’s novel “Cloud Atlas” into Polish, German, French, Spanish, and Portuguese while translating the artificial dialect used in the chapter “Sloosha’s Crossin’ an’ Ev’rythin’ After”. The plot of that chapter is set in a distant future, after the fall of humanity. The narrator is a goatherd whose dialect can be described, on the one hand, as simplified, partly distorted English and, on the other hand, as an exotic dialect which contains neologisms referring to fictional species, culture-specific terms, etc. Special attention is paid to the translation of neologisms as well as to the rendering of the original style. As the results show, the translators used a number of techniques, especially lexicalization, colloquialisation and rusticalisation, adapting the dialect as much as possible to the morphologies of the target languages in order to preserve the style of the chapter as well as to achieve the appropriate effect on the TL readers. In fact, as the dialect is artificial, the translators were able to approach it in a creative way, without the risk that the dialect would be associated with a particular geographic region.

The article focuses on lexicographic means and methods used in the 19th century dialectal lexicography. Zygmunt Gloger in Tykocin Dictionary refers not only to dialect but also to other sources, which makes his work unique. It contains numerous references, especially to literary and historical texts, but also specialised papers. They serve either to prove the presence of a particular word/phrase in the Polish language in the past or in the times of Gloger, or to document the use of selected units in various syntactic and semantic contexts. Scientific references enable to define and to deepen etymology of selected words, or to provide an alternative variation. Referring to various sources in order to show historically or/and geographically determined phonetic, morphological and semantic-lexical forms that differ from forms in Tykocin Dictionary is rare.

The industrialisation of the Upper Silesia, development of new towns and industrial settlements, and various methods of Germanisation applied to the society caused changes in the ethnic structure of this region and strengthened the position of the German language there. The major opponent to German was the Silesian dialect used both by town dwellers and countrymen in their families and neighbouring communities, and also by the scarce representatives of the Silesian intelligentsia.The differences between the village slang and that of the people living in towns were mainly connected with vocabulary which, especially in the industrious centres, was exposed to strong German influence. The common language of the intelligentsia was that of a mixed character; it included many phonetic dialectical characteristics, even though irregularly used ones. The general Polish language was known passively, but not used. It was the language of the prayer books, songs, sermons, calendars, and magazines printed by the local publishing houses. All of these factors created a specific linguistic situation which was based on the following issue: in the Silesia of the second half of the 19th century, the opposition of spoken language versus the language of printed texts equalled the opposition of dialect versus the literary Polish language.

In the paper I discuss the history of the word kudyś “drunkard, loafer.” In the second half of the nineteenth century it is found in the local and folk dialects of eastern Poland, probably from the Russian language. Considering several etymological possibilities, the most probable one is that the word was borrowed. In the end of the twentieth century it appeared in the folk dialects in south Podlasia as an internal borrowing from the urban dialects.

The article analyzes changes over time (temporal variation) in the name of three old farming habits: pierzak, dożynki and szczeblik. The author analyzed the materials obtained today in terms of generational diversity and compared them with archival data – Adam Tomaszewski and Atlas of the language and folk culture of Greater Poland. The analyzes showed that the generational differentiation is insignificant among the surveyed informants, while the chronological changes of the surveyed names show a varying degree of transformation.
