Opis:
In this paper the author demonstrates the limits of audio description in the transfer of the humorous effects of a film comedy which constitute the “semantic dominant” of this kind of production. The analysis is illustrated by examples from Philippe de Chauveron’s film, À bras ouverts (2017). In this form of intersemiotic translation, the lack of certain visual data can block the possibility of understanding the comic by blind or visually impaired people. The author tries to propose some solutions to this problem in the form of creative audio description.

Thick description, thin description. Cultural way of understanding disability The aim of this article is to present disability from the cultural point of view. Special attention will be paid to Clifford Geertz and his thick description. The phrase thick description is borrowed from Gilbert Ryle. In the classic example one boy’s eye involuntairly twitches while at the same time another boy winks. The physical phenomena are the same but the meaning is different. In understanding disability we have to take into consideration not only the medical, social or biopsychosocial model but cultural context as well.

Opis:
The paper describes some special solutions of the long water waves theory proposed by Wilde. The wave equation is derived with the help of a variational formulation of the problem with the Langrangian being the difference between the kinetic and potential energies. In order to look for travelling wave solutions the simple transformation is made. The solutions have been found in the same way as in the KdV equation. Solutions for different wave amplitudes are presented in the paper. The special cases of solutions are solitary waves. It is proved that bounded solutions of an equation can represent periodic or solitary waves and both length and velocity of waves increase when the height of waves increases.

Opis:
The author starts with an analysis of the New Testament texts containing quotations from the Old Testament. Then he examines the contents and context of the quoted line in its original place, and on the basis of these two analyses he examines the influence of the Old Testament on the description in the Gospel. He infers that the Evangelists have used the quotations and allusions from the Old Testament in relation to secondary details of the Passion of Christ. So important Old Testament texts as Isa. 52,13-53,12 have not been quoted probably in order not to give the faithful the impression that undertaking this passion and death for human sins, Jesus just fulfilled the prophecies. The task of redemption through Christ’s Passion and Death was an expression of so great a love towards the Heavenly Father, and through him to the people, and was so fruitful, that no prophecy of the Old Testament could fully reflect this reality.

Messina in the stories of Polish travelers over the course of centuries: the double face of the city – The article presents Messina’s ‘verbal postcards’ left by Polish participants in the Grand Tour and travelers who visited Sicily in later times. Travelers whose accounts are widely known, such as Anonymous (1595), Michał Borch, Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz, Chrystian Kamsetzer (XVIII c.), Zygmunt Krasiński (nineteenth century), but also less well-known ones such as writer Zofia Sokołowska, arriving in Sicily in the tragic year of the earthquake (1908), left descriptions from their stays in Messina about the emotional charge they felt, one closely related to the historical moment in which they arrived on the island. This will therefore be a thorough analysis of a fragment of the Sicilian journey concerning Messina left by some Polish travelers, taking into account their professions, areas of interest and the period in which they were in Sicily.

Recently, the topic of ontologies has growing attention from the IT community. Various processes of ontology creation, integration, and deployment have been proposed. As a consequence there appeared an urgent need for evaluating the resulting ontologies in a quantitative way. A number of metrics has been defined along with different approaches to measuring the properties of ontologies. In the first part of this paper we review the state of the art in this domain. Special attention is devoted to discussing differences between syntactic measures (referring to various properties of graphs that represent ontologies) and semantic measures (reflecting the properties of the space of ontology models). In the second part we propose an alternative approach to quantification of semantics of an ontology. The original proposal presented here exploits specific methods of representing the space of semantic models used for optimization of reasoning. We argue that this approach enables us to capture different kinds of relations among ontology terms and offers possibilities of devising new useful measures.

Psychological models of art reception postulate the presence of two fundamental effects: cognitive understanding and emotional response. Unfortunately, these models are dedicated to sighted viewers. However, even though visually impaired individuals cannot directly perceive artistic creations, audio description enables them to experience the reception of, for example, a painting. In order to answer the question of whether the reception of audio description of a painting triggers similar emotions as the reception of the actual artwork, two independent studies were conducted. The research material was an audio description of Wassily Kandinsky’s abstract watercolour sketch for Composition VII, titled „Untitled”. Subjective experiences were measured using the SUPIN scale. In Study I (N = 138), higher intensity of positive affect was observed compared to negative affect after listening to the audio description. In Study II (N = 67), an increase in positive affect intensity and a decrease in negative affect intensity were observed following the audio description. The results indicate that listening to audio description, which represents an indirect contact with a visual artwork, can improve the well-being of the listeners. The obtained results will be analysed in the context of social construction of emotions and embodied cognition.

In the Logical Investigations, Edmund Husserl defines that which is normative as the objectively regular with its rules of regularity, which can be recognised rationally – normativity concerns the being itself and the rational cognition of the being (logic as a normative discipline establishing the rules of scientific knowledge, as the science of science). Instead, Adolf Reinach in The Apriori Foundations of the Civil Law defines the notion of norm as polysemantic and distinguishes the legal provisions (the prescriptive sentences), formulated within a given community, from the basic norms which are grounded in the objective (including moral) justness of the states of affairs. The obligation of the being and the obligation of acting exist in themselves, independently from cognition. In turn, “enactments and the propositions which express enactments” as a kind of normative sentences have the character of normalisation, but they require a person to pronounce them. The prescriptions realise and refer to what is objectively being and to the objectivity of what is being and obligatory. In my text, I present Reinach’s position on the relations between norms and provisions (as prescriptive propositions “which express enactments”) referring his theories to the Husserlian concept of normativity.

This paper aims to bring theoretical linguistics and cognition-general theories of learning into closer contact. I argue that linguists’ notions of rich Universal Grammars (UGs) are well-founded, but that cognition-general learning approaches are viable as well and that the two can and should co-exist and support each other. Specifically, I use the observation that any theory of UG provides a learning criterion – the total memory space used to store a grammar and its encoding of the input – that supports learning according to the principle of Minimum Description-Length. This mapping from UGs to learners maintains a minimal ontological commitment: the learner for a particular UG uses only what is already required to account for linguistic competence in adults. I suggest that such learners should be our null hypothesis regarding the child’s learning mechanism, and that furthermore, the mapping from theories of UG to learners provides a framework for comparing theories of UG.

Opisy przyrody niesłusznie są pomijane w toku lektury i uznawane za nudne fragmenty utworów epickich. Jest to częste zjawisko zwłaszcza w środowisku uczniowskim. Opisy przyrody stanowiły jedną z realizacji opisu – typowej techniki literackiej XIX wieku. De facto odznaczają się wieloma walorami: artystycznymi, estetycznymi, poznawczymi i edukacyjnymi, co w tym artykule zostało omówione i zilustrowane różnorodnymi fragmentami prozy Stefana Żeromskiego, wybitnego polskiego twórcy obrazów natury.
Descriptions of nature are usually skipped by readers and treated as boring fragments. It is typ-ical of school children. Descriptions of nature were one of the types of descriptions, which were atypical literary technique of the 19th century. Descriptions of nature de facto contain numer-ous values: artistic, esthetic, cognitive and educational, which has been presented in the article and illustrated with various fragments taken from the books written by Stefan Żeromski, an outstanding Polish creator of images of nature.

The aim of the article is the attempt to read anewZbigniew Herbert’s poems. The commonly accepted interpretations in Polish literary discourse place them in the context of realistic paradigm. Meanwhile the model of cognition in the poet’s works is not so clear. It is possible to understand it in the constructivist way, taking into consideration Herberts own view that cognition has always active, dynamic, sensual and linguistic character. Ttherefore, it may be perceived as the correlate of languaging/linguistic behaviour of H. Maturana and E. von Glasersfeld.

Opis:
An extension of shallow water theory proposed by Wilde (Wilde, Chybicki 2000), for finite water depth and based on the Lagrangian type formalism is presented. As in Bussinesq-type models the vertical dimension is being eliminated and the horizontal displacement is expanded in the even power series of vertical variable Y, but only two terms - with power null and two are taken into account. Based on continuity equation, vertical displacement is expressed in terms of horizontal displacement and its derivatives. The equations of motion are derived from a Hamilton principle applied to Lagrangian function being a difference of kinetic and potential energy. In order to solve the set of governing equations a direct method of variational calculus has been applied. The solutions preserve total energy. The numerical simulations have been verified experimentally, in terms of wave measurements in the flume, for various wave heights and ratios of wavelength to water depth, showing good conformity between measured and calculated values. The theory presented here can also be applied for the case of varying depth.

The paper describes a new formulation of the theory of long shallow water waves, which is based on the fundamental assumption that vertical material lines of fluid remain vertical during the entire motion. To make the problem consistent from the point of view of physics the case of waves in a flume due to the motion of a piston type generator is considered. At the piston the material line of water particles remains vertical during the entire motion and thus the generation follows the assumption in the description of the motion of water in the flume. Wave equations are derived with the help of a variational formulation of the problem in a material description. The Lagrangian is the difference between the kinetic and potential energies of the fluid and the mechanical system that describes a very simplified wave generator. The basic assumption simplifies the geometry of the displacement field. The definitions of generalized forces follow from variational calculus. The procedure ensures that the energy is preserved. A simple discrete formulation of the problem is based on the finite element method and the corresponding approximate expressions for energies.

In  this  article  we  shall  compare  the  literary  work  Slavonian  forest  by  Josip  Kozarac  with Adolf  Waldinger’s  oil  painting  Slavonian  forest,  including  his  drawings  and  pictures  of a  Slavonian  forest  and  forest  details.  Comparison  is  made  primarily  on  the  basis  of  their resemblance. Not only do both of these works have the same inspiration and structure, but in terms of content they also elaborate the motifs andthemes of the forest landscape, leaning toward realistic formation, and both represent works of anthological value. In other words, Waldinger’s  Slavonian  forest  is  one  of  his  best  works  and  an  excellent  work  in  the  field of  Croatian  forest  painting,  while  Kozarac’s  work  finds  itself  at  the  anthological  peak  of Croatian descriptive literature.

Opis:
This article is based on an analysis of the social field of the art and cultural category designed to described human taste of aestheticism and need to art creativity. The main idea of this paper is attempt of amendment existing applied notions to the description and analyses of art. To this purpose author is using the analogy between the iconoclash notion suggested by Bruno Latour, and proposed by oneself idea of the mediaclash. This phenomenon characterized by a clash of aesthetics and usage of formal means (especially digital technologies, which are the foundations of the very existence of new media). The second proposition is arthick category, used like Clifford Geertz thick description. This concept show a procedure of interpretation that sets the meaning of particular actions within their proper context, which makes it possible to understand human creative actions and it’s connections with social field.
