Opis:
Introduction: Dermatophytes are a closely related group of keratinophilic fungi. They encompass important etiological agents of superficial fungal infections. These fungi are able to invade keratinized tissues of humans and animals, causing dermatophytosis (ringworm) of hair, nails or skin. The aim: Traditional diagnostics of ringworm is based on morphological identification of cultured fungi and is time-consuming. Materials and methods: In this study, we applied a method patented by Brillowska-Dabrowska and coworkers (Brillowska-Dąbrowska A, Saunte DM, Arenderup MC, 2007, Five-hour diagnosis of dermatophyte nail infections with specific detection of Trichophyton rubrum. J Clin Microbiol 45: 1200-1204) which involves extraction of fungal DNA and PCR amplification with pan-dermatophyte primers to confirm the presence of dermatophytes. Results: The method used here is able to confirm the presence of dermatophyte DNA in pure cultures in less than 5 hours.

Opis:
Cutaneous fungal infection are a wide-spread public health concern affecting millions of people all across the world. Nearly half of the affected will experience multiple episodes of infection requiring numerous rounds of treatment. Trichophyton rubrum was the most common etiological agent of dermatophytes, and it is emerging as an important and significantly prevalent infection in an increasingly aging population and immune-compromised patients. Development of more effective and less toxic anti-fungal agents is required for the treatment of dermatophytosis. The aim of the study was to evaluate the anti-fungal activity of extracts of three plant species used in traditional medicine against Trichophyton rubrum. The ethanol and water extracts of Eucalyptus globules, Croton macrostachyus, and Phytolacca dodecandra leaves were evaluated in vitro for anti-fungal activity against Trichophyton rubrum, using the agar well diffusion technique. The mean inhibition zone of both extracts for E. globulus, C. macrostachyus and P. dodecandra were 19.8, 20 and 16.3 mm, respectively, and mean inhibition zone of the ethanol and water extracts were 23 and 14.4 mm, respectively. Generally, mean inhibition zone of plant extracts did not show statistically significant difference among plants and the mean inhibition zone of plant extracts did show statistically significant difference between extracts (P ≤ 0.05). On the basis of the current findings, Eucalyptus globules and Croton macrostachyus could be good candidates in the search for new antifungal agents from natural products against Trichophyton rubrum. Therefore, further studies are needed to study their toxicology and isolate the bio- active components from these plants.

Opis:
Wood’s lamp was invented in 1903 by American physicist, Robert W. Wood. The longwave ultraviolet (UV) light, has become an invaluable tool in medical practice. UV rays emission in Wood’s lamp is generated by a high-pressure mercury arc, fitted with a compounded filter, made of barium silicate with 9% nickel oxide. This filter is opaque to all light except for a band between 320 and 400 nm, with a peak at 365 nm. Wood’s light is used in veterinary medicine, predominantly in diagnostics of cutaneous fungal infections, especially those caused by dermatophytes. While its direct therapeutic uses are minimal, some recent applications have involved adjunctive roles in various treatments. The most important veterinary dermatophyte, emitting fluorescence in Wood’s lamp, is Microsporum canis. This review covers the physical basics of Wood’s lamp and its diagnostic applications. The myths, surrounding the use of Wood’s lamp are particularly highlighted, and their scientific explanations are presented. Finally, it appears that Wood’s lamp tests are still considered a valuable diagnostic tool in the management of dermatophytosis outbreaks in large groups of animals, e.g. in shelters. Due to its simplicity and low cost, this tool has not lost its popularity irrespective the passing of time.

Opis:
Disinfectants for the use in the animals environment are important for the prophylaxis and control of dermatophytoses. They are essential not only in facilities housing a large number of animals, e.g. shelters, veterinary clinics, or farms, but also in apartments and houses where animals, especially cats and dogs, are in close contact with their owners. The choice of a disinfectant should be based on consideration of many factors, e.g. its efficacy, non-toxicity, nonirritation to animal and human skin, its costs, ease of application, and absence of corrosive/damaging effects on surfaces, especially metal or plastic elements of cages and kennels. This article synthetically presents the results of research on the effectiveness of disinfectants against dermatophytes, with particular emphasis on substances that are widely available and can be used in homes by dog and cat owners. Additionally, disinfection methods and strategies for minimization of the risk of the transmission of arthrospores are discussed in the article.
