Pomerania is a specific terrain both due to its location and the fact that after the second world war only a part of this region was incorporated into the Polish state. Wartime incurred enormous and frequently irreversible damage to historical architecture; this is the reason why old iconography and the search for even the minutest details of the activity of the past inhabitants make it possible to understand not only the history of Pomerania but also the preserved architectural-town planning realisations. Important initiatives include an analysis of the cadastral plan and projects for rebuilding the town of Dobrzany, devised in 1871 by the eminent German constructor David Gilly. The article discusses his work in Dobrzany, the new town-planning premises, house designs and extant examples of realisations. The author also included an abbreviated biography of David Gilly, recognising as particularly significant his projects for that part of historical Pomerania which today lies within Polish frontiers.

The author compares two visions of Europe, seen from Switzerland: one by the English economist David Ricardo, who was here in 1822, the second one by Czesław Miłosz, visiting this country in 1953. Link between both is Ricardo’s future Polish translator, at the same time brother of Miłosz’s maternal grandfather. Miłosz’s essay is discussed in the frame of the idea of the „liberation of Eastern Europe”, launched by his editor, Jerzy Giedroyc, in the early fifties, and of Arthur Koestler’s call for an European Legion of Liberty. After comparison of the text of Sunday in Brunnen with the iconographic programme of the parochial church in Brunnen the author comes to the conclusion that Miłosz wrote a work of fiction rather than a documentary report on his visit in this small place in Switzerland. Brunnen can be seen as an exemplum.

The article focuses on the reception of literary works by James Arthur Baldwin (1924-1987) in the West and in Russia. This classic of American literature showed himself to contemporary readers not only as a gifted prose writer, playwright and feature writer, but also as a radical social activist committed to the fight against American racism. The book Giovanni ’s Room, ranking among the golden hundred of the world literature of the second half of the 20th century, is regarded as the first American novel featuring homosexual love and an important voice in the fight against homophobia. Baldwin proves that we are slaves to the culture the main character, David, is a victim of.

This article analyses the image of David as an exorcist. The choice of the research topic has been inspired by the fact that in the literature, more specifically, in an article by Kenneth E. Pomykala, this issue is presented in a very general way, by indicating only texts where such an image of David can be found, without entering into their deeper interpretations. Also, no scientific article covering this topic in detail has been published to date. The paper is divided into three parts. The first part presents biblical texts in which – as Pomykala has proven – one can talk about this characteristic of David. In the second part, fragments of two Qumran manuscripts, 11Q5 and 11Q11, are analysed. Finally, an analysis of the literaturę of early Jewish writings, portraying David as an exorcist, is provided.

Starożytny Egipt i materialne przejawy jego kultury od najdawniejszych czasów wzbudzały zainteresowanie badaczy i podróżników. Już Herodot, Diodor Sycylijski i Strabon próbowali stworzyć opis krainy o liczącej ponad dwa i pół tysiąca lat historii. Późniejsze stulecia przynosiły raczej wypaczony obraz popadającej w zapomnienie cywilizacji, aż do czasu relacji badaczy z afrykańskiej ekspedycji Napoleona. Jednak dopiero książki, a najszerzej zyskujące w XIX wieku coraz większą popularność czasopisma rozpowszechniły wiedzę na temat egipskich starożytności. Wśród nich najwięcej miejsca nowo odkrywanej kulturze poświęciły ukazujące się w Londynie "Ilustrated London News" oraz "The Graphic", opisując odsłaniane spod piasku najznakomitsze zabytki, relacjonując wydarzenia związane z przewożeniem wielu z nich do Europy i Ameryki, piętnując bezmyślną dewastację dzieł sztuki o bezcennej wartości. Panorama Egiptu powstawała niezależnie w dziełach artystów - malarzy i rysowników, wśród których wyróżniają się prace Davida Robertsa, posiadające wręcz dokumentalną wartość.
Ancient Egypt and material aspects of its culture have excited interest among scientists and travellers since time immemorial. Herodotus, Diodorus Siculus and Strabo already tried to create a description of the land with over two and a half thousand years of history. Later centuries brought a rather distorted picture of a civilisation slowly sinking into oblivion, until the time of Napoleon's African expedition and the reports of his scientists. However, it was books, and especially magazines which gained increasing popularity in the 19th century that popularized the knowledge concerning Egyptian antiquities. Among those the "Illustrated London News" and "The Graphic", published in London, devoted most space to the newly-discovered culture describing the magnificent monuments revealed in the sand, relating events connected with transporting many of them to Europe and America, and stigmatising thoughtless devastation of priceless works of art. The Panorama of Egypt was created independently in works of numerous painters and graphic artists, among which the works by David Roberts stand out as being of almost documentary value.

Der Artikel konzentriert sich auf den apokryphen Ps 151. Auf dem Hintergrund des im AT vorkommenden Phänomens der sog. „Historisierung” wurde zunächst die Herkunft dieses Werkes besprochen und danach seine Übersetzung aus der LXX (Grundlage für die syrische und die lateinische Übertragung) und aus dem Hebräischen zusammen mit einem kurzen Kommentar vorgestellt. In der hebräischen Fassung ist Ps 151 dank der Funde von Qumran bis in unsere Zeit überliefert worden. Durchgeführte Vergleiche beider Texte erlaubten die Schlußfolgerung, daß die hebräische Version von Ps 151 aus Qumran ursprünglicher ist als die anderen Übertragungen.

When Night Passes and When Day Breaks – Between the Past and the Present. Borderlines of Holocaust in Filip David’s WorksThe primary objective of the text is the analysis of Filip David's latest work. The Serbian writer is the author of the novel House of Memories and Oblivions (Kuća sećanja i zaborava, 2014), award for Best Novel of the Year by the NIN weekly (Nedeljne Informativne Novine). On the one hand, the output of this Serbian novelist is of interest to us as a continuation and representation of the contemporary discourse on the Holocaust in Serbia. On the other – we look at the literary realization of the Holocaust topic. The fortunes of the main characters in the novel (children who survived Holocaust) serve as the cases on which we present where the author draws the borderline of the ever-present Holocaust in their lives; how much and in what way the past affects their present; where the borderline of memory, forgetting and oblivion is. Kad padne noć i Kad svane dan - między przeszłością a teraźniejszością. Granice Holocaustu w twórczości Filipa DavidaPodstawowym celem tekstu jest analiza najnowszej tworczości Filipa Davida, autora nagrodzonej Nagrodą Tygodnika NIN („Nedeljne Informativne Novine") powieści Dom pamięci i zapomnienia (2014, Kuća sećanja i zabovrava). Z jednej strony twórczość serbskiego prozaika interesować nas będzie jako kontynuacja i reprezentacja współczesnego dyskursu na temat Holokaustu w Serbii. Z drugiej zaś – przyjrzymy się jego literackiej realizacji. Na przykładzie losów głównych bohaterów powieści (dzieci, które przeżyły Zagładę) pokażemy, gdzie przebiega rysowana przez autora granica istnienia Shoah w ich życiu. Na ile i w jaki sposób przeszłość wpływa na ich teraźniejszość, gdzie przebiega granica pamięci, niepamięci i zapomnienia oraz w jakim stopniu ich życie definiuje rozdzielenie rzeczywistości od fikcji.

The aim of this paper is threefold. First, on the basis of Gordan’s problem and Hilbert’s basis theorem we want to say a few words about the formation of Hilbert’s philosophy of mathematics in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Second, we attempt to reconstruct Hilbert’s Program highlighting the role of reasoning which is not conducted within the axiomatic system. Third, we formulate and try to justify the claim that Hilbert’s Program assumes some metaphysics of the subject that – in general terms – is identical with Kant’s transcendental subject.

Humean doctrine on causality is well known. Since all our knowledge comes from experience, we are able to know that “B follows A” (B propter A) but not that “B is caused by A” (B propter A). All the rest comes from our mental habits. If we limit ourselves only to sensual experience, nothing more can be claimed on causality. However, such a strategy is very far away from what is done in physics. We cannot forget about mathematical structures physics employs for modeling the world. And there are mathematical structures that model what is transparent for sensual perceptions but what is essential for causal interaction. This is also true as far as the Newtonian physics was concerned but to see this more sophisticated philosophy of physics is needed than that Hume had at his disposal. In contemporary physics, causal interactions, as modeled by mathematics, can be drastically different from our everyday imaginations. For instance, causally related events can be space-like separated.

The article examines the ways in which two autographic peritexts tie in with the main texts of two verbatim plays they precede. The discussion addresses the question of transactions between peritext and text in view of interrelated aspects. Invoking background knowledge and the context of other verbatim plays, the inquiry concentrates mainly on The Permanent Way and Stuff Happens, staged in the years 2003-2004. While the main inquiry concerns the broader subject of constructing authorship in peritext, the further question involves the use of narrative frameworks to connect the peritext with the main text. The analysis concentrates on the ways a writer asserts, or declares, and stages his authorship, sometimes his authority, originating the process with significant enunciations in the prefatorial zone. Dealing with verbatim plays, the article invites reflection on the nexus of authorship, authority, authorization or authentication and “truth”.

This paper aims to show how David Foster Wallace uses the story My Appearance to convey his ideas on postmodernism and irony. I argue that two sensibilities, ironic and post-ironic, are represented by the main characters David Letterman and Edilyn, respectively. I briefly outline the ways in which irony is problematic. Then I focus on how the battle between the ironic and the post-ironic is played out during an interview that the above mentioned characters participate in. I also write about the tension inherent in the notion of sincerity. I draw on the works of Adam Kelly and Lukas Hoffmann on postirony as well as a body of literature devoted to irony.

The aim of this article is to analyse four different poems by David Samoylov, a 20th century Russian writer: The End of Don Juan, The Old Don Juan, The Young Don Juan and The Comandorov’s Footsteps. All of them are new interpretations of the Don Juan story. Thanks to the new plot solutions and to the literary dialogue with Pushkin and Blok, Samoylov’s works are interesting and valuable contribution to the literary versions of the Don Juan theme.

Academic fiction, in general, touches upon a variety of issues concerning the groves of academe. One of the most prominent areas comprises the university staff, particularly the professoriate, and the lower ranks, whose predominant target is to become upgraded in the academic pecking order. In this respect, academic fiction depicts a world that is highly hierarchical and prone to personal frictions. The aim of this article is to analyse how these problems are dissected in David Lodge’s Campus Trilogy.

The article focuses on an analysis of Hart Crane’s essay “Note on the Paintings of David Siqueiros.” One of Crane’s few art-historical texts, the critical piece in question is first of all a tribute to the American poet’s friend, the Mexican painter David Siqueiros. The author of a portrait of Crane, Siqueiros is a major artist, one of the leading figures that marked the history of Mexican painting in the first half of the twentieth century. While it is interesting to delve into the way Crane approaches painting in general and Siqueiros’ oeuvre in particular, an analysis of the essay with which the present article is concerned is also worthwhile for another reason. Like many examples of art criticism-and literary criticism, for that matter-“Note on the Paintings of David Siqueiros” reveals a lot not only about the artist it revolves around, but also about its author, an artist in his own right. In a text written in the last year of his life, Hart Crane therefore voices concerns which have preoccupied him as a poet and which, more importantly, are central to modernist art and literature.

W teorii politycznej istnieje wiele różnych wersji projektu demokracji kosmopolitycznej (cosmopolitan democracy). Wariant proponowany przez Davida Helda, wspólnie z Daniele Archibugi, sprowadza się do założenia, iż ważne cele można osiągnąć jedynie przez rozszerzenie i rozwój demokracji w skali globalnej. Demokracja musi przekroczyć granice pojedynczych państw i domagać się uznania na poziomie globalnym. Held i Archibugi nie opowiadają się za końcem państw narodowych. Jednak inaczej niż w przypadku wielu światowych projektów federalistycznych, kosmopolityczna demokracja ma na celu poprawić zarządzanie ludzkimi sprawami na poziomie planetarnym, nie tyle zastępując istniejące państwa, co dając więcej władzy istniejącym instytucjom oraz kreując nowe.
David Held is a theorist of political change and one of the most frequently cited theorists of globalization and cosmopolitanism . He created the paradigm of the modern age, which ended the era of the modern state, formed on the basis of the classic principles. Current globalization, as the Held stressed, is equipped with the characteristics of a distinct system. When describing it, Held uses such references as: spontaneous order, political emergence, self-organization. He reflects the phenomenon by such characters as: transnational interconnectedness, complex webs, networks of relations, evolving structure, process of structuration and stratification, dynamic global structure, patterns of inequality and hierarchy, patterns of inclusion and exclusion. Everything in the scope of the flow and interaction between the following actors: communities, states, international institutions, NGOs, multinational corporations - together forming global order. This phenomenon of globalization of policy means not only global interdependence but also reterritorialisation (new conditions of borders), deterritorialization (removal of the existing borders ), resulting in internationalization, transnationalization and institutionalization. The globalization of policy must lead to a change of transnational consciousness. It must stimulate the cosmopolitan sense of collectiveness and a sense of community across boundaries. Cosmopolitan means the same as for all, isomorphic, unifying, corresponding to the whole. Held is considered among the advocates of cosmopolitan democracy. He incorporate cosmopolitanism in the political sphere and believes that cosmopolitan ethics contributes to improving the standards of democracy. Contrary to international law, a cosmopolitan approach justifies giving the rights and obligations from the fact of being a citizen of earth, and not a particular state. Cosmpolitanism do not destroy national cultures but teaches respect for all of them. Global problems existing in extremely interconnected world can not be solved by one country. Held sees the need for institutions to solve of transnational problems and mitigate antagonisms in the international community that comes from particularistic approach. Concept of global governance is certainly not a scientific whim, but the result of real needs.

Ideologia ta spotyka się z zdecydowaną reakcją wielu przedstawicieli świata nauki, którzy usiłują wykazać bezpodstawność argumentacji nowych ateistów. Jednym z nich jest David Berlinski, usiłujący bronić ujęć teistycznych i ukazujący pseudonaukowość argumentacji formułowanych przez „nowy ateizm”, zwłaszcza Richarda Dawkinsa. 
“The new atheism” is an anti-Christian ideology, whose objective is to fight the idea of God. Atheism is an assumed postulate which should be justified on the basis of empirical science. It is opposed mostly by the ideological and philosophical movement that emerged in the twenty-first century and strongly fights theism. This ideology is confronted with a vehement reaction of many scientists who deal with all the major arguments, accusations and assertions of the new-atheist propositions. One of them is David Berlinski who tries to defend the theistic views as he opposes the pseudo-scientific ideas formulated by the “new atheism”, especially by Richard Dawkins.

Anna Korwin jest brytyjską aktorką polskiego pochodzenia. Jej artystyczna osobowość najpełniej wyraziła się w teatrze, ale Korwin regularnie pojawiała się także w filmie i telewizji, gdzie wyspecjalizowała się w kreśleniu aktorskich miniatur. Wystąpiła m.in. w zrealizowanej przez BBC adaptacji Sagi rodu Forsyte’ów (reż. David Giles, 1967) Johna Galsworthy’ego. Znajomość kilku języków oraz kontynentalne pochodzenie predysponowały ją do ról postaci cudzoziemskich. Najważniejsze kreacje stworzyła już jako artystka dojrzała. Jest wśród nich tytułowa rola w monodramie o życiu i twórczości Marii Callas (według sztuki Jean-Yves’a Picqa), w którym nakreśliła interesujący psychologicznie wizerunek greckiej primadonny.
Anna Korwin is a British actress of Polish origin. Her artistic personality is most fully revealed in the theatre, but she also regularly appeared in film and on TV, where she specialised in creating small character parts. She took part in the BBC adaptation of John Galsworthy’s The Forsyte Saga (dir. David Giles, 1967). Her continental background and knowledge of several languages predisposed her to play foreign characters. Her most important artistic creations were in her mature years. Among them the title role in the monodrama of life and work of Maria Callas (based on the play by Jean-Yves Picq), in which she presented a psychologically interesting portrait of the Greek prima donna.

The main purpose of this article is to portray King David as a prophet in the Targum Jonathan to the Books of Samuel. We first analyze the question where and how David’s prophetic character is shown implicitly in the texts of the Hebrew Bible. We also ponder when the concept of David as a prophet was born. Against this background, the paper analyzes the pericopes in the Targum Jonathan to the Books of Samuel that explicitly mention David as a prophet (TgJ 2 Sam 18:3; 22:1–51; 23:1–7). The targumist’s alteration of the Masoretic Text was intended not only to portray David as a prophet, but also to reinforce the authority and stature of his statements.
Głównym celem artykułu jest ukazanie króla Dawida jako proroka w Targumie Jonatana do Ksiąg Samuela. W pierwszej kolejności analizujemy problem, gdzie i w jaki sposób implicite w tekstach Biblii Hebrajskiej jest ukazany proroczy charakter Dawida. Pochylamy się także nad tym, kiedy narodziła się koncepcja Dawida jako proroka. Na tym tle w pracy analizujemy perykopy w Targumie Jonatana do Ksiąg Samuela, które wprost mówią o Dawidzie jako proroku (TgJ 2 Sm 18,3; 22,1–51; 23,1–7). Zmiana tekstu masoreckiego przez targumistę miała nie tylko ukazać Dawida jako proroka, ale wzmocnić autorytet i rangę jego wypowiedzi.

In his diverse works, David Hockney has used, and still uses, various media, which in some periods of his activity gained leading significance, while in the following they were abandoned or temporarily abandoned. But no matter what medium in the given period was the main form of creativity, the focus of his interest has always been the issue of image and imaging. The article is devoted to the practice and theoretical recognition of photography, which was a kind of introduction to experiments with a moving image. The author refers to the artist's numerous publications on the theory and history of image and imaging (including Secret Knowledge, History of Images, On Photography). Photography led to Hockney's audiovisual realizations. This is a kind of repetition of the natural evolution and developmental progression of the media, also, and perhaps above all, in the technological dimension. The article is divided into three parts. In the first part, the author presents Hockney as a practitioner and theoretician, in whose activities both these activities are closely intertwined. This is a sign of the times: practice and theory are equally important, awareness of the medium, or artistic and aesthetic self-awareness of artists, is an expression of the spirit of the era in which an intuitive approach to art today seems inefficient, not to say impossible. Hockney appears to be an exemplary artist, who is extremely conceptual in his artistic practice as a consequence of his research on the history of art and a constantly developed set of his own theoretical findings. He is an artist discursively commenting not only on his work as an artist in many media (painting, drawing, graphics, set design, photography, film, computer graphics), but also an art and media theoretician reflecting on the fate of images in a changing media landscape. The second part of the article is devoted to the reconstruction of Hockney's theoretical reflections on photography and the analysis of his photographic projects. First of all, experimental Polaroid compositions created in the early eighties, named by the artist joiners, as well as photographic collages and photographic images realized in the later periods of the British artist's work. The third part considers digital movies, as Hockney calls them, audiovisual realizations referring to both his previous photographic works and experimental video films in which multi-camera systems are used.

The games under discussion are adaptations of H.D. Thoreau’s Walden. The choice of games stems from the observation that identity, freedom, and limitation are important themes of Thoreau’s work, which is reflected in the games under discussion. The three games discussed in the article are, thus, treated as modernist and postmodernist readings of a literary text, giving the reader/gamer more or less limited possibilities of shaping the character/avatar. For an abstract in English, scroll down.Artykuł omawia możliwości kształtowania postaci w grach komputerowych, dla wielu graczy jest to możliwość wyrażenia i modyfikacji własnej tożsamości. Gry różnią się bardzo swobodą, jaką gracz ma przy kształtowaniu tożsamości postaci-awatara, którą gra, przy czym w wielu współczesnych grach jest to ważna część struktury gry, dostarczająca graczom dużo satysfakcji i wymagająca od nich równie dużo czasu i zaangażowania, co sam proces gry. Omówione gry to komputerowe adaptacje dzieła Walden Henry'ego Davida Thoreau. Dobór przykładowych gier jest uzasadniony tym, że tożsamość, wolność i ograniczenie to ważne tematy dzieła Thoreau, znajdujące swoje odzwierciedlenie w grach opartych na tekście. W latach 80. XX w. ciągłe usprawnianie możliwości warsztatowych kina korespondowało z nowymi tendencjami w horrorze i próbami redefinicji zjawiska odbioru filmowego według kategorii badań kognitywnych. Autorzy nurtu body horror zaproponowali specyficzny mechanizm odkrywania świata przedstawionego. Narracja cielesnego filmu grozy wymagała od widza niemal detektywistycznego zaangażowania w dochodzenie przyczyny zdarzeń, a jednocześnie konsekwentnie zbliżała odbiorcę do widowiskowych obrazów destrukcji ciała. Balansując między tym, co ukryte, i tym, co wystawione na pokaz, horror fizycznych doznań okazał się nośnikiem hybrydycznych historii, w których kontrapunktem dla drastycznej dosłowności uczyniono zniuansowane studium potworności. Spektakle grozy reżyserowane między innymi przez Johna Carpentera i Davida Cronenberga, burząc podstawowe schematy kategorialne, oprócz lęku towarzyszącego niedopowiedzeniom budziły też fizjologiczny wstręt, będący rezultatem ujawnienia cielesnej obrzydliwości. Za sprawą mechanicznych efektów specjalnych maszyna projekcyjna kina, będąca aparaturą oddziaływania psychicznego, zaczęła też pełnić funkcję stymulatora doznań fizycznych.
In 1980s the continuous improvement of the cinema’s technical possibilities corresponded to new trends in horror and attempts at redefinition of the phenomenon of film reception using cognitive science. Authors of the body horror genre have proposed a unique mechanism for exploring the world presented. The narrative of the bodily horror film required a detective like engagement from the viewer in investigating the cause of events, and at the same time consistently bringing the viewer closer to spectacular images of the destruction of the body. Balancing between the hidden and the exposed, the horror of physical sensations has turned out to be a carrier of hybrid histories in which counterpoint to drastic literalism has been made of a nuanced study of monstrosity. The horror spectacles directed by John Carpenter and David Cronenberg, destroying basic categorical schemes, besides the fear accompanying the understatement, awakened the physiological aversion resulting from the disclosure of bodily abomination. Thanks to mechanical special effects, the cinema projection machine, which is an apparatus of psychic interaction, has also begun to act as a stimulator of physical sensations.

The cycles of traditions about Saul’s rise to power and reign (1 Sam 7:2–12:25; 13:1–15:31) and David’s ascension to the throne (1 Sam 16:1 – 2 Sam 5:5) portray human life as constantly under threat while simultaneously remaining in all circumstances in the hands of YHWH and dependent on His will. In order to understand the Deuteronomist’s perspective on the life/soul of a human being, one has to explore the meaning of the Hebrew term nepeš in the source material he edited. This publication, using the historical-critical method, analyses the meaning of the concept of nepeš in 1 Sam 25:29 to show on this basis: (1) literary, editorial and historical-cultural background of this verse in the context of the whole cycle of tradition: 1 Sam 16:1 – 2 Sam 5:5; (2) exegetical analysis of nepeš and other key terms used in 1 Sam 25:29; (3) theological ideas present in the Hebrew text and their implications for the biblical concept of the human soul. This is because Abigail’s blessing shows the image of God characteristic of historical books of the Old Testament, as well as sheds light on the character of David and his role in the inauguration of monarchical power in Israel. Furthermore, it allows new aspects of the semantic field of the term nepeš to be discovered.

Realizacja dwóch ostatnich filmów Romana Polańskiego – Rzeź, na podstawie sztuki teatralnej Yasminy Rezy i Wenus w futrze Davida Ivesa, który dla potrzeb nowojorskiej sceny teatralnej zaadaptował kontrowersyjną przed laty powieść hrabiego Leopolda von Sacher-Masocha – stanowi właściwy moment do podjęcia próby odkrycia korzeni i dookreślenia wpływu szeroko pojętych doświadczeń teatralnych na kształt dzieła filmowego artysty. Zmudziński wykracza poza filmy, które są ekranizacjami sztuk teatralnych, badając oraz porządkując obszary wpływów estetyki teatru i doświadczeń scenicznych reżysera, w tym „poetyki” absurdu, wykorzystania izolowanych przestrzeni, kolistej struktury narracji, skompresowanego czasu, ograniczonej liczby bohaterów pozostających w osobliwych relacjach, wreszcie aktywnego emocjonalnie uczestnictwa odbiorców, osiągającego poziom oryginalnej psychodramy. W obejmującym dwadzieścia pełnometrażowych filmów dziele Polańskiego wyraźnie, choć nie nachalnie, jest obecne „myślenie teatrem”, a o teatralnym nachyleniu jego twórczości świadczy m.in. fakt, że wiele z jego filmów mogłoby z powodzeniem zostać zaadaptowanych na potrzeby realizacji spektakli teatralnych.
The last two films of Roman Polański – Carnage, based on a theatrical play by Yasmina Reza and Venus in Fur based on David Ives’ play adapted for the New York theatre scene from the story of the count Leopold von Sacher-Masoch – are a good occasion for reconsidering the origins and roots of Polański’s creativity, and in particular the impact of the theatre on Polański’s films. Zmudziński in his analysis goes beyond films that are straightforward adaptation of plays written for the theatre, and examines and orders the areas of influence of the theatre aesthetics and theatrical experience of the director, including the “poetics” of the absurd, the use of isolated spaces, circular structures of narration, compressed time, restricted number of characters remaining in peculiar relationships, and finally emotionally active engagement of the audience, reaching the level of the original psychodrama. Within Polański’s twenty feature films “theatre thinking” is clearly, though not overtly, present. The theatrical inclinations of the director are also confirmed by the fact that many of his films could easily be adapted for the stage.

This paper presents the conservation and reassembly of the Tod Head lighthouse lantern in the storage area of the National Museums Scotland. The Tod Head lighthouse was located on the Scottish east coast, north of Edinburgh. The lantern was dismantled in 2011 and sent to the National Museums Collection Centre. Firstly we look at a technical explanation of a functioning lighthouse. The lighting device – which is called a lantern – uses Fresnel lenses, also called stepped lenses. The design of the lantern was a collaboration between the Scottish engineer David Alan Stevenson and the horologist Augustin Henry-Lepaute, partner of Augustin Fresnel. Secondly, a short history of the object is presented. Throughout the 20th century, the lantern has undergone many changes. The light has been electrified and the mechanism has been motorised. Finally we detail the conservation operations and the reassembly.
Tematem artykułu jest proces konserwacji latarni morskiej Tod Head przeprowadzony na terenie magazynu National Museums Scotland. Latarnia Tod Head znajdowała się na wschodnim wybrzeżu Szkocji, na północ od Edynburga. W 2011 r. rozebrano ją i wysłano do National Museums Collection Centre. Na początku sprawdzono dokumentację techniczną funkcjonującej latarni. Urządzenie oświetlające – które nazywa się latarnią – wykorzystuje soczewki Fresnela, zwane również soczewkami schodkowymi. Projekt latarni powstał dzięki współpracy szkockiego inżyniera Dawida Alana Stevensona oraz gnomologa Augustina HenryLepaute’a, współpracownika Augustina Fresnela. W pracy przedstawiono krótką historię obiektu. W XX w. latarnia przeszła wiele zmian. Źródło światła (latarni) zostało zelektryfikowane, a mechanizm (obrotowy) zautomatyzowany. W artykule szczegółowo opisano operacje konserwatorskie i ponowne złożenie obiektu.

The aim of this paper is to show some aspects of the interplay between technology and philosophy in the context of western culture. In the first section the author considers the possibility of applying M. Heller's strategy called 'philosophy in science' to technology. 'Philosophy in technology' should not be seen as a competitor for philosophy of technology but rather as a complementary philosophical account. The second section introduces the concept of 'defining technology' drawn primarily on some considerations of J.D. Bolter. In the third one the author tries to discuss four 'defining technologies': craft technology of antiquity, mechanical clock, steam engine, computer, and their metaphorical influence on the ways of viewing the world and the man. In the final section it is argued that besides science, religion, philosophy, arts etc., technology also has its significant contribution to the image of the world throughout the history.
