The article attempts to discuss two examples of Danish literary discourse on former Danish colonies on the Gold Coast (Africa). Sophie Petersen’s travel books “Danmarks gamle Tropekolonier”, 1946 (The former Danish Tropic Colonies) and “Vore gamle Tropekolonier”, 1948 (Our former Tropic Colonies) and Thorkild Hansen’s documentary novel “Slavernes Kyst”, 1967 (The Coast of the Slaves) have been analyzed as texts that reveal a part of the Danish colonial and postcolonial (self-)reflection and consciousness. The literary representations of Africa given in the aforementioned books reflect the Danish nation-building project in the respective historical, political and mental contexts (during the Second World War and in the sixties). Petersen and Hansen apply different writing strategies (rhetorical as well as discursive) in their presentations of the Danish history of the Gold Coast, and they seem to represent rather dissimilar approaches to this topic. As a conclusion, the author of the article attempts to answer the question about the role of the African representations in the Danish self-understanding as a nation.

The aim of the article is to analyze five Danish literary examples (texts by Geeti Amiri, Yahya Hassan, Tarek Omar, Hassan Preisler and Abdel Aziz Mahmoud) in the context of the ongoing public debate on Danishness. The chosen writers deal with a migration experience and they point out the impossibleness of becoming Danish in the eyes of the ethnic Danish society. The notion of Danishness is undergoing changes, but as my reading of the texts has shown, the non-ethnic Danish writers conceptualize it as being founded in a greater degree on the unreachable criterion of being (rather than on knowing or doing) – using Joshua A. Fishman’s categories.

This article discusses the patriotic themes in the works of the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. These considerations are based on selected “songs about the fatherland” written by the author discussed in the perspective of the program of the Danish national Romantic era. Based on the analytical material, the author carries out the reconstruction of Andersen’s vision of the fatherland, pointing to its multidimensionality dictated by the historical and literary context. Focusing on lyric poetry, the article also contributes to the broadening of Andersen’s reception in Poland to include the genres marginalized so far, giving a more complete picture of the fairy tale writer’s works.

W artykule opisano krótkometrażowy film Carla Th. Dreyera Dopędzili prom (1948), zrealizowany według noweli duńskiego noblisty Johannesa V. Jensena. Wykorzystując wiadomości biograficzne i kontekst powstania, Trwoga analizuje wyjątkowość tego dzieła wobec ówczesnych produkcji dokumentalnych Dansk Kulturflm z lat 40. i 50. XX w. W artykule pokazano, jak wątki propagandowe (postulowane na wzór brytyjski przez duńskich dokumentalistów) zostały uzupełnione elementami ze sfery nadprzyrodzonej oraz religii, podobnie jak miało to miejsce we wcześniejszych filmach tego reżysera (szczególnie wyeksponowano rolę Wampira). Ponadto autor zwraca uwagę na symbolikę śmierci i elementy wanitatywne, które sprawiają, że ten krótki film drogi staje się krytyką społeczeństwa kraju, w którym powstał. Trwoga wskazał również inspiracje twórcy, jak i późniejsze możliwe wpływy Dopędzili prom na innych reżyserów.
The article describes the short film by Carl Theodor Dreyer They Caught the Ferry (1948), based on the novella by Danish Nobel Prize winner Johannes V. Jensen. Using biographical information and the context of the uprising, Trwoga analyses the uniqueness of this work in relation to the then documentary productions of Dansk Kulturflm from the 1940s and 1950s of the 20th century. The article shows how propaganda themes (postulated on the British model by Danish documentary film-makers) were supplemented with elements from the supernatural sphere and religion, as was the case in earlier films by this director (the role of the Vampire was particularly prominent). In addition, the author draws attention to the symbolism of death and vanitative elements that make this short road movie a critique of the society of the country in which it was made. Trwoga also pointed to the inspiration of the director, as well as later possible influences of the They Caught the Ferry on other film-makers.

This article summarises the 130-year history of the Polish community in Denmark (the round anniversary is due in 2023). The first Poles in Denmark were seasonal workers who started arriving in the country in the late 19th century where they found employment in agriculture. The 1920s saw the development of Polish organisations in Denmark: the Association of Polish Workers (1925), later renamed the Association of Poles in Denmark, and numerous Polish Houses. The following decades brought further initiatives undertaken by members of the Polish community in Denmark concerning both their integration and the propagation of Polish culture.
Artykuł powstał w celu podsumowania 130-lecia istnienia duńskiej Polonii, które przypada w 2023 roku. Pierwszymi Polakami w Danii byli pracownicy sezonowi przybywający do tego kraju od końca XIX wieku, którzy znajdowali zatrudnienie w rolnictwie. Od lat 20. XX wieku datuje się rozwój polskich organizacji w Danii: powstały Związek Robotników Polskich (1925) przemianowany potem na Związek Polaków w Danii oraz liczne Domy Polskie. Kolejne dekady przyniosły dalsze inicjatywy podejmowane przez członków polskiej społeczności w Danii, a dotyczyły one zarówno integracji, jak i krzewienia polskiej kultury.

Eocenomyrma gen. nov. of extinct ants of the family Formicidae, subfamily Myrmicinae, is described from the late Eocene European amber (ca. 40 Ma), based on six specimens from six pieces of amber; three of them contain E. rugosostriata (Baltic and Saxonian ambers); the remainder contain three new species: E. orthospina (Baltic Amber), E. electrina (Scandinavian Amber), and E. elegantula (Baltic Amber). Eocenomyrma resembles two extant genera: Myrmica and Temnothorax (both of which also occur in late Eocene European amber), but differs from them by the following apomorphies: clypeus short and broad, with two lateral longitudinal carinae and distinctly marked anterolateral corners, its median portion faintly concave transversally, anterior margin broad and shallowly concave medially, with pairs of long setae situated on the anterolateral clypeal corners, and central part of the anterior clypeal margin without setae; middle and hind tibiae lacking the spurs. Palp formula in Eocenomyrma is 4, 3 versus 6, 4 in Myrmica. We include Eocenomyrma in the tribe Formicoxenini. Nothomyrmica rugosostriata is transferred to Eocenomyrma, and the neotype of the latter species is designated; Nothomyrmica petiolata is transferred to the genus Temnothorax. A key for the identification of all known Eocenomyrma species is compiled.

The article focuses on the Danish numerals 1-1000. It presents their Proto-Indo-European, Proto-Germanic, Old Danish and present forms whilst providing additional information on their development and corresponding numerals in other European languages. It focuses primarily on the vigesimal counting system, whose traces can be found in Danish, and which is the source of some unique forms unseen in other languages. Therefore, special attention is paid to the numerals of the series 50-90. Though these appear to be unique and exotic, the article shows that they are not to be perceived as an anomaly but rather a different path of development within the language Moreover, a brief explanation of the origins of the vigesimal system in Danish is provided. Also, several units of measurement showing traces of the vigesimal, duodecimal and sexagesimal systems are discussed. Finally, language reforms aimed at changing the numeral forms will be shortly portrayed.

The present paper aims to investigate the way in which Africa is perceived by Danish speakers in light of the most petrified linguistic expressions and corpus data. As it turns out, the received picture is largely negative, with elements such as POVERTY, DISEASES, LACK OF DEMOCRACY, WARS and ETHNIC CLASHES in its foreground. Moreover, in the majority of the analyzed contexts Africa is presented as a cluster of similar countries facing the same challenges, with little room for the awareness of the great cultural diversity that flourishes on the continent. In this context, it is also worth adding that the analyzed collocations also convey a closely related stereotype of the inhabitants of Africa, regarded primarily through the prism of the color of their skin and the suffering they must endure on their continent. It is no surprise, then, that Africa and African people are quite often perceived as a problem for the western world, especially because of the highly-feared waves of immigrants and asylum seekers that occur regularly on the continent. On the other hand, at least in the light of the analyzed material, there seems to be no to little realization of the fact that many of the problems of Africa stem from the ages of draining its human and natural resources by the colonial powers. As argued by the author of the present article, such a picture of Africa is not only unfair but may have other consequences as well, possibly predetermining how Danes willview single issues such as immigration or military invasions, and letting them fall into the spiral of eurocentric and patronizing understanding of the world.

The aim of the study is to analyze the impact of exemption from pilotage for 75m and 90m long vessels entering Szczecin on navigation safety on the waterway Świnoujście-Szczecin. Available sources concerning the influence of maritime pilotage on the safety of navigation have been analysed. Such data have been collected and made available only for the Danish Straits, the Great Barrier Reef Area of Australia, the Bosporus Straits and the Tokyo Bay. The study also included an analysis of economic effectiveness of pilotage exemption in this area.

This paper presents the acoustic features of speech recorded during interactions with foreigners in Danish and Finnish languages in the light of Speech Accommodation Theory. It presents selective aspects of speech attuning to linguistically less-fluent interlocutors in temporal and spectral perspectives. Foreigner-directed speech and native talk were compared in a spectral (F0, vowel space and intensity) and a temporal domain (phones per second). The results were correlated with the participants’ degree of exposure to foreigners and attitude towards them measured by means of a questionnaire. It was concluded that personal attitude towards interlocutors causes hyperarticulation. It was also shown, however, that the differences between the given instances of conversation are the strongest in the temporal domain, and not in the spectral domain.
Artykuł przedstawia wyniki analizy akustycznej mowy kieowanej do obcokrajowców w językach duńskim i fińskim w świetle teorii akomodacji mowy. Praca omawia wybrane aspekty konwergencji w sygnale akustycznym, uzyskanym z nagrań rozmów z osobami o ograniczonej kompetencji językowej. Analizę przeprowadzono w dwóch perspektywach: częstotliwościowej (ton podstawowy, rozkład formantów, natężenie) i czasowej (liczba głosek na sekundę). Wyniki zostały skorelowane ze zmiennymi: kontakt z obcokrajowcami oraz stosunek do osób o niższej kompetencji językowej. Wykazano, że osobisty stosunek do rozmówcy wpływa na stopień hiperartykuacji. Dowiedziono również, że stopień hiperartykulacji jest zależny od stosunku do rozmówcy w perspektywnie czasowej, nie częstotliwościowej.

The article departs from Smith's (1997) claim that verb constellations constituted by a countable nominal, a verb of motion and a directional PP are ACCOMPLISHMENT constellations in line with 'The child built a house' or 'He wrote a novel'. A series of morphological and syntactic tests are applied to perfective and imperfective ACCOMPLISHMENTS of directed motion in Polish and Danish (biec / at løbe, iść / at gå, lecieć / at flyve og jechać / at køre + directional adverbials). This illustrates that the verb constellations of interest do not always show the features of canonical ACCOMPLISHMENTS that do not refer to motion as such.

This article has as its topic the Danish artist Dan Sterup-Hansen (1918–1995) and his paintings and prints on the subject of blind people with canes as well as works related to these. Sterup-Hansen was active as an artist from a young to an old age, but made a significant artistic contribution in the decades following World War II. During this period, he explored a number of themes related to cold war anxiety and the cultural trauma of the World War II. These themes centre on the human body and a phenomenological perception of the world. They are humanitarian in spirit and are related to Sterup-Hansen’s left-wing political views of solidarity, humanism, and advocacy for change and reconstruction after the World War II.

Artykuł prezentuje problematykę kształcenia nauczycieli edukacji elementarnej w Danii w oparciu o analizę dostępnej literatury, ra- porty Eurydice oraz dane pochodzące ze strony duńskiego Minister- stwa Dzieci i Edukacji. Autor, oprócz przedstawienia ogólnego zarysu funkcjonowania duńskiego systemu edukacji, nakreśla jego główne cechy. W opisie szkolnictwa podstawowego szczególnie uwzględniono etap edukacji elementarnej. Dominującym celem pracy jest zilustrowanie systemu kształcenia nauczycieli szkół podstawowych wraz z alternatywnymi ścieżkami uzyskania kwalifikacji. Wyniki prowadzonych analiz wskazują na to, że duński system kształcenia nauczycieli jest elitarny, skuteczny oraz zorientowany na wiedzę i umiejętności przyszłego nauczyciela, który w świadomy i odpowiedzialny sposób dba o osiągnięcia i dobre samopoczucie dziecka. Ponadto w tekście nawiązano do tytułowej bohaterki duńskiego serialu telewizyjnego Rita, który stał się inspiracją do napisania tej pracy.
The aim of this article is to study and reflect on the way of training elementary education teachers in Denmark. The analysis is based on the review of available books, Eurydice reports, as well as the data included in the website of the Danish Ministry of Children and Education. The author managed to present not only the general perspective on the Danish education system, but also its key features. In the description of elementary education, the stage of early school education was particularly taken into account. The author of the article mainly intended to present the system of educating teachers working in primary schools, along with the alternative paths to obtain such qualifications. The results of the analyses indicate that the Danish teacher education and training system is elitist, efficient and focused on thorough knowledge and skills of a future teacher who, in a conscious and responsible manner, cares about the child’s achievements and wellbeing. The acquisition of the Danish sound system can be a difficult task for both native and non-native speakers. This paper is an attempt at showing the ways in which /r/ contributes to the system’s overall complexity. It is suggested that /r/-related difficulties in Danish are due to the impact /r/ has on the neighboring sounds and, as a result, on the relations between graphemes, phonemes and sounds. Several phenomena connected with the presence of /r/ in various contexts are presented to exemplify the above statement, including r-coloring (i.e. the change of the quality of the neighboring vowel), the fusion of /r/ with neighboring vowels and the interactions between /r/ and /ə/, resulting in a change of vowel length and/or the assimilation of [ə]. The analysis focuses mainly on the grapheme-sound relations and the ways /r/ affects the discrepancy between Danish orthography and pronunciation.
