Mathematical models describing aerial spraying and the distribution of liquid droplets on a target were presented. Relationships based on “free models” with Gaussian distribution of droplet concentrations and “bound models” that account for the impact of disturbances in the velocity field behind agricultural aircraft were expanded, and the hybrid model too. The results of experimental studies were presented and compared with theoretical calculations. The “bound model” was found to be the most effective solution for describing the physical phenomena that accompany the aerial spraying process.

The task identifying changes and irregularities in medical insurance claim payments is a difficult process of which the traditional practice involves querying historical claims databases and flagging potential claims as normal or abnormal. Because what is considered as normal payment is usually unknown and may change over time, abnormal payments often pass undetected; only to be discovered when the payment period has passed. This paper presents the problem of on-line unsupervised learning from data streams when the distribution that generates the data changes or drifts over time. Automated algorithms for detecting drifting concepts in a probability distribution of the data are presented. The idea behind the presented drift detection methods is to transform the distribution of the data within a sliding window into a more convenient distribution. Then, a test statistics p-value at a given significance level can be used to infer the drift rate, adjust the window size and decide on the status of the drift. The detected concepts drifts are used to label the data, for subsequent learning of classification models by a supervised learner. The algorithms were tested on several synthetic and real medical claims data sets.

Opis:
This communication presents a methodology, based on a modified drift flux model, to determine bubble size distribution in column flotation. The modified drift flux model incorporates a surfactant-type parameter. This parameter considers the impact of surfactant on bubble hydrodynamics. The methodology aims to improve the accuracy of bubble size distribution prediction, which presents deviation depending on surfactant type (i.e. polyglycolic based or alcoholic base). Many authors have proposed different mathematical improvements to reduce de experimental data deviations in the presence of different surfactants. However, from 1988 to 2022, the determination coefficient, or the quality of the adjustments, from the proposed mathematical models is, at the most, 92% (relative error). The proposed methodology improves the quality of the adjustments to 98.6, adding a single parameter for groups of surfactants. This methodology incorporates a single parameter in the terminal velocity calculation that can compensate for the impact of surfactant type in bubble hydrodynamic (bubble skin friction or drag coefficient, bubble wake, bubble shape, bubble rigidity). This parameter is a function of the gas holdup calculated from gas velocity measured and the bubble size distribution calculated (deviated) from gas holdup and gas velocity measured. The methodology is validated with reported experimental results and proposed modifications from various authors. The confidence interval (2 σ) is reduced from 0.11mm to 0.05mm in the case of (Yianatos, Banisi, Ostadrahimi). In the case of the recently reported experimental results from Maldonado and Gomez, the confidence interval is reduced from 0.31 mm to 0.09 mm. These results improve bubble size estimation based on drift flux in column flotation, contributing to a better understanding of surfactant impact on bubble swarm hydrodynamics.

Philip Phenix’s (1964) book Realms of meaning: A philosophy of the curriculum for general education started the ever growing movement concerned with how school education might help young people in their search for meaning, purpose and values in times of rapid cultural change. Today, in globalised, digital, secularised culture, the importance and urgency of this role have never been greater. Religious Education, with core curriculum status in Catholic schools, has both credentials and precedents for studying directly the contemporary human quest for meaning to help resource the spirituality of young people, no matter what their religious disposition. But a ‘course correction’ is needed for the discourse of Catholic Religious Education which has ‘drifted’ almost so exclusively into ecclesiastical terminology that its educational credibility as a valuable spiritual/moral school subject has been eroded, creating an ever widening discontinuity with the realities of the classroom and young people’s spirituality. A more outward-looking and less Catholic-centric emphasis would help, without neglecting commitment to the faith tradition. While concerned with the Australian Catholic sector, the article may well have relevance to other countries and contexts.

The convergence of hydrometallurgical waste management and the principles of the circular economy holds immense potential for addressing the challenges posed by metal-enriched waste. By turning waste into valuable resources through efficient metal extraction, this approach not only aligns with sustainable development goals but also contributes to the conservation of resources, reduction of waste, and the promotion of economic and environmental well-being. This article deals with the further possibilities of processing metal-bearing wastes in the form of steel drifts via hydrometallurgy. The main part of this research focuses on the development of suitable technology for the leaching of steel flakes to obtain selected non-ferrous metals, mainly zinc and lead, for economic and environmental reasons. Laboratory experiments are carried out to verify a suitable leaching agent in the form of high-temperature acid leaching, neutralizing leaching, and magnetic separation verified in lead seals. From the results of the experiments, a suitable technology for processing steel fumes is proposed.

Frequency based methods developed to detect an islanding condition in modern power grid structures have been discussed. The condition may occur in power grid lines to which additional energy sources with power electronic converters have been connected such as solar panels or wind turbines. It is a hazardous operating state for grid workers and devices connected to the islanded part of the grid. Such a state results from the inability to control amplitude and frequency of basic harmonic of the grid voltage. An islanding problem in a power grid with additional small energy sources has been discussed. A basic passive and active islanding detection method have been presented and compared with known frequency based algorithms, namely active frequency drift and active frequency drift with a positive feedback algorithm. Finally, a laboratory test of the proposed islanding detection methods in a three-phase grid with an AC-DC converter has been conducted. To demonstrate differences between the tested methods, total harmonic distortion injected into the output converter current and detection time of islanding state have been measured.

The article presents the most frequent surname in Lithuania — Kazlauskas. Referring to the article “Mysterious Lewandowski” by K. Skowronek (2000), an attempt has been made to account for this frequency in three various ways. First, the principles behind the quantitative structure of anthroponomasticons (Zipf’s law) and the loss of surnames (genetic drift) are discussed. Then the Slavic origin of the surname under consideration has been highlighted as a typical trait of the majority of surnames in Lithuania. In connection with this fact, it has been stressed that caution must be exercised in proposing a thesis on its origin as a translation from Lithuanian on a mass scale, since this thesis requires plentiful empirical evidence. Finally, the etymology of the name is analyzed. Morphologically it is a typical surname derived from a toponym. This supposition is additionally supported by the existence in Poland of numerous localities called Kozłów, Kozłowo or similar name; these in turn are most likely to have been derived from appellative-based personal names of their owners or inhabitants, such as Kozieł.

In the ground vehicle industry, it is important to simulate multibody models of the full vehicle based on wheel forces and moments in order to derive section forces at certain components for durability assessment. This is difficult due to noise in the input data and the unavoidable deviation between the model and real vehicle. Both lead to an undesired drift of the vehicle model in the simulation. This paper shortly describes the sources of these effects and shows that, due to missing knowledge about the true trajectory of the vehicle, this problem cannot be solved by an improved numerical treatment of the underlying equations. Several ways to deal with the problem are briefly reported. Finally, a simple vehicle model is used to show all the effects.

The MEMS inclinometer integrates a tri-axis accelerometer and a tri-axis gyroscope to solve the perceived dynamic inclinations through a complex data fusion algorithm, which has been widely used in the fields of industrial, aerospace, and monitoring. In order to ensure the validity of the measurement results of MEMS inclinometers, it is necessary to determine their dynamic performance parameters. This study proposes a conical motion-based MEMS inclinometer dynamic testing method, and the motion includes the classical conical motion, the attitude conical motion, and the dual-frequency conical motion. Both the frequency response and drift angle of MEMS inclinometers can be determined. Experimental results show that the conical motions can accelerate the angle drift of MEMS inclinometers, which makes them suitable for dynamic testing of MEMS inclinometers. Additionally, the tilt sensitivity deviation of the MEMS inclinometer by the proposed method and the turntable-based method is less than 0.26 dB. We further provide the research for angle drift and provide discussion.

Changes that occur on the local level can explain the processes on the population level and, at the same time, are the driving force of species adaptation. Objects of the study were dicarious cultures of S. commune collected from 38 basidiocarps grown on the territory of Holosiivskyi National Nature Park, Lysa Hora Regional Landscape Park and Feofaniya forest parcel (Ukraine). Results showed similarity of genetic variability of S. commune in different local populations. The heterozygote deficiency of some loci that was discovered might have resulted from new forms of allozymes that have not become widespread or due to small population sizes. The degree of differentiation of genes between local studied populations was moderate due to the high flow of genes. The absence of spatial structuration of genotypes is established, and the Mantel test showed a lack of interconnection between the genetic component and the geographical coordinates of the samples. It has been suggested that wind direction and terrain are the factors that influence the genetic structure of local populations.

The fact that the gross domestic product (GDP) will in the coming years stay at a moderate level (no more than 3.8 per cent) may indicate that the factors that provided for the GDP growth in Poland to date are being exhausted. In this situation, the further development of the country and the opportunity to avoid the risk of development drift depend on departing from the economic model developed after 1989 to the model of economy based, to a large extent, on knowledge and innovations.

This paper presents a multivariate regression predictive model of drift on the Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) behaviour. Evaluation tests on a CMM with a multi-step gauge were carried out following an extended version of an ISO evaluation procedure with a periodicity of at least once a week and during more than five months. This test procedure consists in measuring the gauge for several range volumes, spatial locations, distances and repetitions. The procedure, environment conditions and even the gauge have been kept invariables, so a massive measurement dataset was collected over time under high repeatability conditions. A multivariate regression analysis has revealed the main parameters that could affect the CMM behaviour, and then detected a trend on the CMM performance drift. A performance model that considers both the size of the measured dimension and the elapsed time since the last CMM calibration has been developed. This model can predict the CMM performance and measurement reliability over time and also can estimate an optimized period between calibrations for a specific measurement length or accuracy level.

Detection of concept changes in incremental learning from data streams and classifier adaptation is studied in this paper. It is often assumed that all processed learning examples are always labeled, i.e. the class label is available for each example. As it may be difficult to satisfy this assumption in practice, in particular in case of data streams, we introduce an approach that detects concept drift in unlabeled data and retrains the classifier using a limited number of additionally labeled examples. The usefulness of this partly supervised approach is evaluated in the experimental study with the Enron data. This real life data set concerns classification of user's emails to multiple folders. Firstly, we show that the Enron data are characterized by frequent sudden changes of concepts. We also demonstrate that our approach can precisely detect these changes. Results of the next comparative study demonstrate that our approach leads to the classification accuracy comparable to two fully supervised methods: the periodic retraining of the classifier based on windowing and the trigger approach with the DDM supervised drift detection. However, our approach reduces the number of examples to be labeled. Furthermore, it requires less updates of retraining classifiers than windowing.

The temperature coefficient of specific parameters such as individual, residua offset and resistance has been also investigated. Therefore the optimum cell to fit the best in the performance specifications was identified. The variety of tested shapes ensures a good analysis on how the sensors performance changes with geometry.

Opis:
The stochastic modelling of degradation processes requires different characteristics to be considered, such that it is possible to capture all the possible information about a phenomenon under study. An important characteristic is what is known as the drift in some stochastic processes; specifically, the drift allows to obtain information about the growth degradation rate of the characteristic of interest. In some phenomenon’s the growth rate cannot be considered as a constant parameter, which means that the rate may vary from trajectory to trajectory. Given this, it is important to study alternative strategies that allow to model this variation in the drift. In this paper, several hazard rate functions are integrated in the inverse Gaussian process to describe its drift in the aims of individually characterize degradation trajectories. The proposed modelling scheme is illustrated in two case studies, from which the best fitting model is selected via information criteria, a discussion of the flexibility of the proposed models is provided according to the obtained results.

Opis:
North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), monthly averages of precipitation in the Baghdad station, and petrologic tracer proxy data for ocean properties in the North Atlantic (NA) have been used in an attempt to identify climatic conditions in Iraq during the study period. The study showed that contemporary changes in precipitation in Iraq are associated with NAO, as a negative relationship is found between them. Moreover, the study found that there is a strong negative correlation between NAOI and SST in NA, where drift ice indices explain between 33–36% of the NAOI variability. The prolonged of cold Holocene periods led to a radical oceanography and atmospheric changes in the NA and the Mediterranean Sea, effectively contributing to the prevalence of cold and drought in the EM, including Iraq. The analysis revealed as many as four intervals of significant cool drought phases prevailing over Iraq during the periods 2650–2500, 2200– 1900,1300–1200 and 1000–850 BC.

Opis:
The paper deals with mathematical modelling of population genetics processes. The formulated model describes the random genetic drift. The fluctuations of gene frequency in consecutive generations are described in terms of a random walk. The position of a moving particle is interpreted as the state of the population expressed as the frequency of appearance of a specific gene. This leads to a continuous model on the microscopic level in the form of two first order differential equations (known as the telegraph equations). Applying the modified Chapman-Enskog procedure we show the transition from this system to a macroscopic model which is a diffusion type equation. Finally, the error of approximation is estimated.

Opis:
Abstract. as spores and vegetative cells has been demonstrated by several laboratories using FTIR spectroscopy. In the present work three techniques of FTIR spectroscopy have been discussed: classical transmission techniques using transmission mode, Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform (DRIFT), and Horizontal Attenuated Total Reflectance (HATR). Different groups of biological material have been measured: vegetative cells of bacteria, bacterial spores, background materials, pollens, aminoacids, and proteins. Spectra of the same material achieved using three different FTIR techniques were similar to each other. Main advantage of HATR and DRIFT in comparison with a transmission mode is minimum sample preparation of biological material. These results also demonstrate that FTIR techniques in combination with statistical Principal Component Analysis (PCA) provide rapid and reliable distinction between vegetative bacteria, bacterial spores, and background particles.

Opis:
An active beam-pointing stabilization system has been developed for a high-power KrF laser system to eliminate the long-term drift of the directional change of the beam in order to have a stable focusing to a high intensity. The control of the beam direction was achieved by a motor-driven mirror activated by an electric signal obtained by monitoring the position of the focus of the output beam. Instead of large sized UV-sensitive position sensitive detectors a simple arrangement with scatter plates and photodiodes are used to measure the directionality of the beam. After the beam stabilization the long-term residual deviation of the laser shots is ~14 μrad, which is comparable to the shot-to-shot variation of the beam (~12 μrad). This deviation is small enough to keep the focal spot size in a micrometer range when tightly focusing the beam using off-axis parabolic mirrors.

Opis:
Objectives: This paper aims to theorise that unintended fit may emerge not only when institutions are creatively adapted by actors within the boundaries of formal rules, but also when formal rules are violated or circumvented. Research design & methods: To that end, this paper links unintended fit more closely with the theory of gradual institutional change coming from historical institutionalism. Theoretical developments are illustrated by a case study on Polish employment regulations and post-crisis public policies. Findings: This paper finds that unintended fit may emerge in two situations: when rules are creatively adapted by actors who use them (“conversion-type” unintended fit) or when they are both adapted and circumvented or violated (“driftconversion-type” unintended fit). The requirements for the formation of both types of unintended fit are discussed. Implications/ Recommendations: This paper suggests that violations and circumventions should be treated as methods of engaging institutions and that the concept of ambiguity in historical institutionalism should be revised in respect to drift. Contribution / Value Added: This approach opens new possibilities for analysing the formation of institutional complementarities.
