The aim of this paper is to identify and analyse the sources and causes of the armed conflict in Ukraine from a polemological perspective, i.e. referring to deep structural factors, economic tendencies and phenomena, as well as occasional causes. The complexity of the Ukrainian armed conflict results largely from the character of the sources and causes, and from the fact that they are deeply-rooted and go way beyond the problem of stopping the process of Ukraine’s initial integration with the EU by former President Viktor Yanukovych. From a polemological perspective, the escalation of the conflict was caused by a complex combination of structural and economic causes. With regard to the postponement of the signing of the association agreement with the EU, it should rather be regarded as a pretext (an occasional cause) of starting the protests, whose escalation led to the establishment of the socalled separatist republics and the outbreak of the armed conflict. The paper attempts to sort out and conduct a broad analysis of the causes of the abovementioned events.

The article explores the nature of stereotypes surrounding Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions, framing them as colonial legacy later instrumentalized by the Ukrainian political, cultural, and intellectual elite. In addition, it highlights the historical context, enrooted in Soviet propaganda, which shaped the region’s negative and distorted image. The author argues that the prevailing image of Donbas as the Ukrainian Other has led to the marginalization of its population, contributing to the discrimination faced by internally displaced persons (IDPs) since 2014. The article calls for a shift in discourse, deviating from discussing separate “cultural identity” and focusing on the local and communal aspects of the region. It also advocates a nuanced and empathetic exchange about East Ukraine, acknowledging the impact of historical and structural factors on the region’s challenges.

This article attempts to analyse the situation in Ukraine in the face of ongoing Russian aggression and increasing pressure from the Kremlin towards Eastern European states. The armed conflict taking place in Ukraine means that the geostrategic situation of Eastern Europe has changed. In this context, the Eastern Partnership, which was meant to be one of the key instruments shaping international relations with the states neighbouring the EU in the East, is quite often seen as an ineffective or even obsolete tool. There can be no doubt that the greatest problem for the Eastern Partnership is that the project is seen in geopolitical categories - thinking of the countries of the Eastern Partnership in the context of the necessity for them to choose between the European Union and Russia (listening to statements by the EU's political decision-makers, it can often seem that those states have no other option). The key research question is whether we will be dealing with an assertive EU policy in tandem with current US policy, or whether there will be another reset in relations between the West and the Russian Federation.

The aim of this article is to analyse Beijing’s actions in the course of the conflict in the Eastern Ukraine in the period from the proclamation of two separatist republics (the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic) until reaching the cease& re agreement at Minsk in February 2015. This conflict is likely to be the worst security crisis in Europe since the war in Yugoslavia. The fundamental question now is: „is it possible to defuse this crisis without the participation of China?”. The PRC has been a close ally and partner of both Russia and the Ukraine, which poses a tough challenge for Chinese politicians and also put their readiness to get involved in the world’s politics to the test. The conflict in the Ukraine is quite recent and is still evolving and thus still requires a lot of studies. In Poland the & rst publications on this issue have only appeared recently. Economic and political relations between China and Russia are commonly known, but the knowledge of the importance of the Ukraine in China’s politics is still li mi ted, even among the Ukrainian scholars (despite the fact that it is supposed to be the destination of one of the Silk Route branches that travelling through Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and the Black Sea is to reach the Illichivsk harbour in the Ukraine). This essay, which is a continuation of previous researches on the relations between China, the Ukraine and Russia during the course of the Maidan protest and the subsequent annexation of the Crimea by the Russian Federation, intends to & ll this gap providing an analysis of the Chinese politics towards the war in the Eastern Ukraine.

In what follows I analyze, on a macro-level, the role played by the OSCE in negoti-ating the ceasefire agreement during the conflict in eastern Ukraine. The activity set up to implement the cease-fire arrangements of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission in Ukraine will be examined in more detail. By analyzing the documents of the OCSE, I will focus on the specific scale, mechanisms, and ways of implementing tasks that result from the Minsk Agreements and which the OSCE Permanent Council imposed on the Mission. This analysis will also be an attempt to assess its efforts so far and to indi-cate the most important difficulties and obstacles faced by the international community in the process of normalization of the Donbas situation.

The problem of the Ukrainian language in light of the annexation of Crimea and the war in DonbasThe problem of Ukrainian language in public discourse has been present since 1991, when Ukraine regained its independence. The problem is difficult, largely due to the historical past, mainly Soviet. For 26 years of independence Ukraine has not developed a unified and correct approach to solve this problem. In this article was an attempt to analyze how the annexation of Crimea and the war in Donbas influenced the language problem in Ukraine. The analysis covers four main aspects: everyday life (interpersonal communication), commercial (press market, books and electronic media, advertising), formal and official (functioning of the state, judiciary and education system) and symbolic (identity). Problem języka ukraińskiego na Ukrainie na tle aneksji Krymu i wojny w DonbasieProblem języka ukraińskiego w dyskursie publicznym obecny jest od czasu odzyskania niepodległości przez Ukrainę. Problem jest trudny i złożony, co w znacznym stopniu jest spowodowane przeszłością historyczną, głównie radziecką. Przez 26 lat niepodległości Ukraina nie wypracowała jednolitego i właściwego podejścia do rozwiązania tego problemu. Kwestia językowa jest poważnym wyzwaniem dla państwa ukraińskiego i jednym z ważniejszych problemów ukraińskiej polityki wewnętrznej. Ma ona cztery podstawowe aspekty: codzienny (komunikacja międzyludzka), komercyjny (rynek prasy, książek i mediów elektronicznych, a także reklam), formalno-urzędowy (funkcjonowanie państwa, zwłaszcza sądownictwa i systemu edukacji) oraz symboliczny/tożsamościowy. W artykule podjęto próbę analizy, w jaki sposób aneksja Krymu i wojna w Donbasie wpłynęły na kwestię językową na Ukrainie.

The aim of this paper is to analyse France’s actions in relation to the war in Ukraine between 2014 and 2022, based on three pillars: 1) providing support for Ukraine (ceasefire and cessation of military activities); 2) coordinating actions at the international level (TCG, UN, OSCE); 3) maintaining open channels of dialogue with Russia (Macron-Putin) as a pathway to diplomatic solutions. The paper is an attempt at assessing whether and to what extent the joint ‘agenda of trust and security’ proposed to Moscow by the President of France has influenced the policy of ‘de-escalation’ of the conflict and the reduction of Russia’s neo-imperial ambitions. What were the effects of the dialogue within the so-called Normandy Format and to what extent did it influence the implementation of the Minsk agreements? The author presents the conclusion that from the very beginning, the goal for Russia has not been so much to settle the conflict in the Donbas and restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity, but to permanently block Kiev’s aspirations for EU accession and to keep Ukraine within Russia’s sphere of influence. The references of thepaper include official documents, statements from the main decision-making centres (the Élysée Palace, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of France), recognised foreign policy journals (“Politique étrangère”), as well as analyses and studies (French Institute of International Relations, IFRI).

The article concerns opinions on Poles evacuated from Donbass in 2015. To bring the above matter closer, press articles available online have been reviewed, and Internet users’ comments posted under them analyzed. Some of them strongly opposed the admission of refugees from eastern Ukraine and accepting them to their local communities. Defining them as refugees, they refused to help them, for example in providing housing while the indigenous people have to wait for years for the allocation of a communal flat. They also questioned the Polish nationality of the arrivals. Other comments were of quite the opposite nature. They expressed their conviction that the Polish state has obligations to Poles from the East and it should receive them, rather than migrants from other cultural backgrounds.

The annexation of Crimea and military operations that began in eastern Ukraine in April 2014 were the cause of the growing threat to Ukraine’s energy security. In terms of coal supplies, Donbass is of key importance for the country’s economy. Despite military operations on the east, illegal trade with the occupied territories was flourishing. This situation led to an increase in dissatisfaction amid certain social strata, as well as among volunteer battalions participants who took part in the military operations in Donbass and were the initiators of the Donbass blockade. The main purpose of the study to analyse the specific of the development of coal industry in Ukraine and the main reasons of the blockade of Donbass and its consequences.
Aneksja Krymu i rozpoczęcie działań wojennych w Donbasie w kwietniu 2014 r. były przyczyną rosnącego zagrożenia bezpieczeństwa energetycznego Ukrainy. Pod względem dostaw węgla Donbas ma kluczowe znaczenie dla gospodarki kraju. Działania wojenne spowodowały wzrost nielegalnego wydobycia i nielegalnego handlu węglem. Sytuacja ta spowodowała nasilenie niezadowolenia społecznego, szczegolnie wśród uczestników batalionów ochotniczych, którzy brali udział w operacjach wojskowych w Donbasie i byli inicjatorami blokady Donbasu. Sytuacja wokół blokady Donbasu jest dość złożona i niejednoznaczna. Z jednej strony wymagania uczestników blokady, aby uwolnić więźniów politycznych i jeńców wojennych, a także ograniczyć finansowanie regionom separatystycznym jest logiczna i uzasadniona. Z drugiej strony istnieją twarde argumenty władzy ukraińskiej o tym, że dostawy węgla marki „A” nie można powstrzymać, gdyż są one niezbędne dla zapewnienia bezpieczeństwa energetycznego państwa. Głównym powodem było to, że zasoby z terenów okupowanych są tańsze w porównaniu z alternatywnymi dostawami węgla z innych państw. Blokada Donbasu negatywnie odbiła się na budżecie Ukrainy. Wysokie wsparcie blokady przez społeczeństwo ukraińskie świadczy o tym, iż ma ono pewne roszczenia do władzy dotyczące „porozumień oligarchów z liderami samozwańczych republik” o interesach biznesowych. Pomimo że ukraiński rząd po „nacjonalizacji” ukraińskich przedsiębiorstw na terenach okupowanych sam został inicjatorem blokady, w kwestii „hybrydowych” relacji z samozwańczymi republikami wspieranymi przez Rosję, trudno znaleźć proste i unikalne rozwiązanie problemu. Najważniejszym celem artykułu była analiza specyfiki rozwoju przemysłu węglowego na Ukrainie oraz głównych przyczyn blokady Donbasu i jej konsekwencji.

The text, which is part of the new field of social sciences – Donbas Studies, presents partial results of the research carried out in the city of Severodonetsk, which is located in the Lugansk Oblast in Donbas. The author, using the ethnographic method of field research, was looking for an answer to the question of how the process of decommunization in Donbas proceeded, and in particular, how the sense of removing the symbols of communism was negotiated, what aspects of this process turned out to be socially conflicting, and what role young people played in this process? Using the interpretation of metaphors and etymologies, the author states that de-communization in Ukraine, apart from the official imperative of oblivion, brings an element of revenge with it. Thanks to participation in the discussion on the de-communization of young people, it is possible to notice that its field of meaning has been extended to include aspects relating not only to the assessment of the past, but also the current social situation in Ukraine. Thanks to this, de-communization does not only mean an order to forget, but also to remember.

Найгостріші проблеми глобального, власне українського та індивідуального вимірів події знайшли і продовжують знаходити свої відображення у численних творах мистецтва, що свідчить про активний процес культурної рефлексії травматичного досвіду. Основна дослідницька увага у статті звернена на особливості еволюції літературної рецепції актуальної історичної події, її розуміння крізь призму пам’яті минулого, культури, суспільно-політичних реалій. Особливо важливим є акцент на травматичному досвіді як персонажів аналізованих текстів, так і українського суспільства загалом. Автор статті намагається простежити, як змінюється відображення війни в мистецтві, зокрема у літературі. Спочатку вона представлена як наслідок конфлікту посттоталітарних пам’ятей в українській культурі, згодом як суспільна національна травма і, зрештою, як травма особиста на рівні окремої долі, окремого досвіду. Саме на останньому варіанті зосереджено основну дослідницьку увагу у цій студії.
The present article proposes a literary interpretation of the contemporary Russian-Ukrainian war in Donbas, depicted in a variety of texts published in recent years. As this war continues, the traumatic experiences of participants and observers, as well as the interpretation of these experiences, are also changing. The most acute problems of the global, Ukrainian and individual dimensions of the event have found their reflection in numerous works of art. This process is a continuous one and it testifies to the active efforts at a cultural reflection on the traumatic experience. The main attention in this article is paid to the peculiarities of the evolution of the literary reception of a current historical event, its understanding through the prism of the memory of the past, culture, and socio-political realities. The study concentrates on two very special texts: a novel written by the soldier who was a participant of the war in Donbas and memoirs of the prisoner of one of the concentration camps in Donetsk. The emphasis on the traumatic experience of both authors in the analyzed texts and the Ukrainian society in general is particularly important. The author of the article tries to establish how the reflection of war in art, and more specifically, in literature, changes over time. It is initially presented as a consequence of the conflict of post-totalitarian memories in Ukrainian culture, later as a social national trauma, and finally as a personal trauma at the level of a separate destiny and a separate experience. This study focuses on the latter option.
