This paper presents the design and analysis of a polygon connected autotransformer based 36-phase AC-DC converter which supplies direct torque controlled induction motor drives (DTCIMD’s) in order to have better power quality conditions at the point of common coupling. The proposed converter output voltage is accomplished via two paralleled eighteen-pulse AC-DC converters each of them consisting of nine-phase diode bridge rectifier. An autotransformer is designed to supply the rectifier. The design procedure of magnetics is in a way such that makes it suitable for retrofit applications where a six-pulse diode bridge rectifier is being utilized. The proposed structure improves power quality criteria at ac mains and makes them consistent with the IEEE-519 standard requirements for varying loads. Furthermore, near unity power factor is obtained for a wide range of DTCIMD operation. A comparison is made between 6-pulse and proposed converters from view point of power quality indices. Results show that input current total harmonic distortion (THD) is less than 4% for the proposed topology at variable loads. A laboratory prototype of the proposed Polygon-Connected autotransformer-based 36-pulse AC-DC converter is developed and test results are presented to validate the developed design procedure and the simulation models of this AC-DC converter under varying loads.

Opis:
Design of a delta/polygon-connected autotransformer based 36-pulse ac-dc converter is presented in this paper. The 36-pulse topology is obtained via two paralleled eighteen-pulse ac-dc converters each of them consisting of a nine-phase (nine-leg) diode bridge rectifier. For independent operation of paralleled diode-bridge rectifiers, two interphase transformers (IPT) is designed and implemented. A transformer is designed to supply the rectifier. The design procedure of magnetics is in a way such that makes it suitable for retrofit applications where a six-pulse diode bridge rectifier is being utilized. The proposed structure has been implemented and simulated using Matlab/Simulink software under different load conditions. Simulation results confirmed the significant improvement of the power quality indices (consistent with the IEEE-519 standard requirements) at the point of common coupling. Furthermore, near unity power factor is obtained for a wide range of DTCIMD operation. A comparison is made between 6-pulse and proposed converters from view point of power quality indices. Results show that input current total harmonic distortion (THD) is less than 4% for the proposed topology at variable loads.

Opis:
Coupled resonators and coupled transmission lines are described with the same coupling curve. A ratio between resonant frequencies, squared, of coupled resonators and ratio between impedances of coupled transmission lines reveal the same type of dependence on coupling coefficient. This can be used to select, adjust or create the models of coupled structures. As an example the new model of coupled transmission lines has been developed. Its application in LC element directional coupler is presented and discussed.

The research for novel power conversion topologies and the development of cutting-edge power component technologies are driven by the demand for renewable and much more efficient electricity generation, delivery, and conversion. Simulation and Analysis High Voltage Gain DC-DC Converter with Double Voltage Booster Switched Inductor for PV Applications are analyzed in this paper. Multilevel boost converter topologies recently reintroduced, are gaining popularity as a solution for industrial and transportation power systems because they enable the use of innovative, efficient, but relatively low voltage low-voltage devices at greater voltage and power levels. there is only one power switch on the converter that is planned here, three diodes, two capacitors, and two inductors to achieve ultra-high gain with better efficiency. High voltage gain, minimal switch stress, and the ability to lessen input-current ripple and capacitor voltage ripple are all benefits of the topology. When it switches complementary, the capacitors' ripple is reduced, which lowers the size requirement for the capacitors. A 12V, 500 watts prototype was analyzed, simulated and designed. at a duty cycle of 0.75 it is achieved high DC-DC gain i.e 19 and efficiency 93%. The practicality of the converter will be demonstrated by the close agreement between the analysis and simulation findings.

The electric drives with synchronous gearmotors are obtained generally in actuating constant velocity devices in electroenergetics, heat-power engineering, pipeline transportation today. But they have not only well-known advantages but also essential disadvantages. The permanent magnet brushless DC motor with weakening from rotor permanent magnets and staror tooth coils may be an alternative to this fixed electromotor. The made optimization of cross geometry of PM brushless DC motor is based on the field mathematical model with Nd-Fe-B plastomagnets and six stator teeth. The rating value of moment is 1 Nm, of rotor speed is 750 rpm. It was calculated the width of interpole nonmagnetic arcs which provides the desired value of cogging torque after the stator coils are currentless. It was appreciated the effect of the width of tangent-magneted interpole arcs to the maximum peaks of the cogging torque and the full load torque. It was analysed the possibility to produce the rotor version of magnet ring without m-metal core.
Napędy elektryczne z synchronicznymi silnikami przekładniowymi są stosowane ogólnie w napędach o stałej prędkości w energetyce, elektrociepłowniach, transporcie rurociągami, ale mają one nie tylko ogólnie znane zalety lecz również istotne wady. Alternatywą może być bezszczotkowy silnik prądu stałego o magnesach trwałych z dodatkowymi uzwojeniami na zębach stojana. Optymalizacja geometrii tego silnika jest oparta na matematycznym modelu pola z magnesami Nd-Fe-B i z sześcioma zębami stojana. Znamionowa wartość momentu wynosi 1 Nm, prędkości obrotowej 750 obr/min. Obliczono szerokość niemagnetycznego łuku między magnesami, która daje żądaną wartość momentu utknięcia, gdy w uzwojeniu statora nie ma prądu. Oceniono wpływ szerokości łuków między biegunami na maksymalną wartość momentu utknięcia i na moment pełnego obciążenia. Przeanalizowano możliwość wykonania wersji pierścienia magnetycznego wirnika bez rdzenia z metalu m.

On the basis of field calculation of a magnetic field in an active zone without grooving of the BLDC motor optimization of his cross-section geometry is offered with the purpose of increase in his electromagnetic torque. Characteristics serial slotting BLDC motor and a model sample without slotting BLDC motor, having identical cases are compared. The technique of definition of magnetic losses in the core and neodymium-iron-bor magnets is offered. The technique of analytical calculation (on the first harmonics of voltage and currents) performance data of salient pole BLDC motor with the inverter of a voltage and with magnetoelectric and electromagnetic excitation is offered.
Na podstawie obliczenia pola magnetycznego w strefie czynnej ze żłobkami, proponuje się optymalizację geometrii jego przekroju w celu zwiększenia jego momentu elektromagnetycznego. Porównano charakterystyki seryjnego bezszczotkowego silnika prądu stałego następnie magnetoelektrycznego silnika bezszczotkowego i jego modelu bez żłobków. Podano definicję strat magnetycznych w rdzeniu i magnesach neodym-żelazo-bor. W artykule podano metodę analitycznego obliczania danych silnika bezszczotkowego z biegunami ukrytymi z przekształtnikiem napięcia ze wzbudzeniem magnetoelektrycznym i elektromagnetycznym z uwzględnieniem 1-szej harmonicznej napięcia i prądu.

The escalating prevalence of rooftop solar PVs and DC powered home appliances are the driving forces for the research in the field of DC distribution at residential level. The current research work presents comparative analyses of AC and DC distribution systems considering various scenarios for the specific purpose of efficiency/energy savings. A modern Bakersfield CA, USA home is considered for the analyses. The loads are classified according to the power demand. Rooftop solar PVs are also included in each residential building. Mathematical equations are devised for the efficiency analysis of residential buildings powered with AC as well as DC. The results reveal strong dependence of the efficiency values on the utilization/types of loads, efficiencies of the power electronic converters (PECs), solar capacity and seasonal conditions, as a function of the time of day. It is concluded that AC system presents better efficiency values as compared to the DC counterpart except during the time periods when solar power is available and when the penetration of variable speed drive (VSD) based loads is high.

Opis:
A Monte Carlo code was written to determine the saturation thickness for multiply scattered gamma rays from aluminium targets. Interactions of incident gamma rays with the energies of 123, 279, 360, 511, 662, 1115, and 1250 keV were simulated. This work aims to design a convenient code which can be used in investigations on gamma backscattering. Obtained results for saturation thickness values have been compared with experimental ones and the Monte Carlo N-particle (MCNP) code results, and showed good agreement. Also, based on the similar behavior of number of multiple scattered photons between these three methods, the expected spectrum of singly or multiply scattered photons which is not possible to observe with experiment has been presented.

Opis:
Boralyn (Al/B₄C) composite material is produced chiefly of boron carbide and aluminum. Boron Carbide is an important material for the nuclear industry due to high neutron absorption cross-section. This composite is used as shielding materials to absorb neutrons in the nuclear reactors and control road materials. In this study we investigated Al/B₄C composites against gamma radiation. For that purpose, 5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, 15 wt.% and 20 wt.% reinforcement content were investigated. Cs-137 gamma radioisotope source which has 662 keV gamma energy photons were used. For each material, linear and mass attenuation coefficients were calculated. Theoretical mass attenuation coefficients were calculated from XCOM computer code. The theoretical results were compared with experimental results. The results were showed that increasing the amount of Boron Carbide compound content of boralyn composite material decrease the linear and mass attenuation coefficient of materials

In this study, boralyn (boron carbide-aluminum metal matrix composite material - Al/B₄C) composite materials were investigated on shielding effect against gamma and neutron radiations. The samples were prepared as 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt%, and 20 wt% reinforcement content and for each content of material has composed in five different average particle sized (3 μm, 53 μm, 113 μm, 200 μm, and 500 μm). Linear and mass attenuation coefficients were calculated experimentally for each composite material against Cs-137 gamma source. Theoretical mass attenuation coefficients of material were calculated by using XCOM computer code. Then the theoretical results were compared with experimental results. Then, macroscopic cross-section values were calculated experimentally for each composite material against Pu-Be neutron source. As the conclusion of the study, it could be understood that in spite of decrease of the attenuation coefficient against gamma radiation, the adding materials give rise to increase the shielding ability of material against neutron radiation.

Since the technology concerning gamma radiation showed a rapid development, it became a necessity to be protected from it. One of the common shielding materials for this purpose is concrete. This study aims to give the effect of pumice rate on the gamma radiation attenuation coefficients of normal concrete (ρ = 2.476 g $cm^{-3}$) containing different rates of pumice mineral. Pumice, for which the Gölcük region in Isparta province is rich, is a volcanic originated spongy and porous mineral. Although it is a light material, it has a high comprehensive strength and heat resistance. So it became a common construction material in buildings. In the study, the variation of attenuation coefficients for concretes of different pumice rates were measured for 662, 1173 and 1332 keV photons using a NaI(Tl) detector. The experimental values were compared with the theoretical ones obtained by XCOM code.

Purpose: Biomechanical comparison of straight DCP and helical plates for fixation of transversal and oblique tibial bone fractures were analyzed and compared to each other by axial compression, bending and torsion tests. Method: An in vitro osteosynthesis of transverse (TF) and oblique bone fracture (OF) fixations have been analysed on fresh sheep tibias by using the DCP and helical compression plates (HP). Results: Statistically significant differences were found for both DCP and helical plate fixations under axial compression, bending and torsional loads. The strength of fixation systems were in favor of DC plating with exception of the TF-HP fixation group under compression loads and torsional moments. The transvers fracture (TF) stability was found to be higher than that found in oblique fracture (OF) fixed by helical plates (HP). However, under torsional testing, compared to conventional plating, the helical plate fixations provided a higher torsional resistance and strength. The maximum stiffness at axial compression loading and maximum torsional strength was achieved at torsional testing for the TF-HP fixations. Conclusion: From in vitro biomechanical analysis, fracture type and plate fixation system groups showed different responses under different loadings. Consequently, current biomechanical analyses may encourage the usage of helical HP fixations in near future during clinical practice for transverse bone fractures.

In this fast-changing environmental condition, the effect of fossil fuel in vehicle is a significant concern. Many sustainable sources are being studied to replace the exhausting fossil fuel in most of the countries. This paper surveys the types of electric vehicle’s energy sources and current scenario of the on-road electric vehicle and its technical challenges. It summarizes the number of state-of-the-art research progresses in bidirectional dc-dc converters and its control strategies reported in last two decades. The performance of the various topologies of bidirectional dc-dc converters is also tabulated along with their references. Hence, this work will present a clear view on the development of state-of-the-art topologies in bidirectional dc-dc converters.
