The wear behavior and the mechanism of plasma sprayed WC12Co, Cr$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ and Al$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ coatings in sliding contact with steel bronze and carbon graphite were studied with block-on-ring arrangement. The coefficient of friction and wear rate of these coatings were measured at dry friction conditions. The worn surfaces of the coatings were examined employing the scanning electron microscope. The results obtained that the wear mechanism of coatings changes for different kinds of layers.

The increase in Τ$\text{}_{c}$ for high temperature superconductors can be realized, among others, by appropriate substrate/film combinations. SrLaGaO$\text{}_{4}$-SrLaΑlO$\text{}_{4}$ solid solutions were grown by the Czochralski method. The already achieved results allow to obtain single crystals of SrLaΑl$\text{}_{1-x}$Ga$\text{}_{x}$O$\text{}_{4}$ with lattice constant a in the range from 0.3754 to 0.3775 nm, and SrLaGa$\text{}_{1-x}$Αl$\text{}_{x}$O$\text{}_{4}$ crystals with lattice constant a in the range from 0.3843 to 0.3826 nm. Electron-probe microanalysis along obtained single crystals was used for determination of segregation coefficient between aluminum and gallium ions.

Opis:
Thermoelectric materials are used as solid-state heat pumps and as power generators. The low efficiency of devices based on conventional bulk thermoelectric materials confines their applications to niches in which their advantages in compactness and controllability outweigh that drawback. Recent developments in nanotechnologies have led to the development of thermoelectric nano-materials with double the efficiency of the best bulk materials, opening several new classes of applications for thermoelectric energy conversion technology. We review here first the physical mechanisms that result in the superior thermoelectric performance of low-dimensional solids, compared to bulk thermoelectric materials: they are a reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity, and an increase in the Seebeck coefficient S for a given carrier density. The second part of this review summarizes experimental results obtained on macroscopic arrays of bismuth, antimony, and zinc nanowires with diameters ranging from 200 to 7 nm. We show how size-quantization effects greatly increase S for a given carrier concentration, as long as the diameter of the nanowires remains above 9 nm, below which localization effects start dominating. In a third part, we give data on PbTe nanocomposites, particularly bulk samples containing 30~nm diameter Pb inclusions. These inclusions affect the electron scattering in such a way as to again increase the Seebeck coefficient.

A dc magnetization jump associated with a large thermal hysteresis around 180 K was found in Y$\text{}_{0.33}$Sr$\text{}_{0.67}$CoO$\text{}_{2.614}$, which indicates a kind of magnetic memory effect. On the other hand, Y$\text{}_{0.33}$Sr$\text{}_{0.67}$CoO$\text{}_{2.707}$ shows a larger magnetization with a small magnetization jump around 200 K and lower Curie temperature than those of Y$\text{}_{0.33}$Sr$\text{}_{0.67}$CoO$\text{}_{2.614}$. Rich Co$\text{}^{3+}$ ions in the low temperature sintered Y$\text{}_{0.33}$Sr$\text{}_{0.67}$CoO$\text{}_{2.707}$ possibly introduce large magnetization and high magnetization jump temperature. This may be coming from a surface/volume effect of Co$\text{}^{3+}$ ions appearing in the polycrystalline sample prepared at low temperature. The ferromagnetism resulted from the different surface/volume ratio contributes to a part of magnetization and may result in the change of the Curie temperature.

We present a symmetry analysis of allowed infrared and Raman modes in graphene and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. Surface structure for highly oriented pyrolytic graphite is examined using atomic force microscopy. As experimental tools, we used infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry in order to investigate the pseudodielectric function of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite in the mid-infrared range (500-7000 $cm^{-1}$) and Raman spectroscopy to investigate the influence of layers number decrease. As a result, we propose a method for an experimental verification of graphene.

We present theoretical study of the pressure coefficient of the light emission $(dE_{E}/dP)$ in compressively strained zinc-blende InGaAs/GaAs and InGaN/GaN quantum wells, grown in a (001) direction. We investigate the contributions to $dE_{E}$/dP arising from (i) third-order (nonlinear) elasticity, (ii) nonlinear elasticity, originating from pressure dependence of elastic constants, and (iii) nonlinear dependence of elastic constants on composition in InGaAs and InGaN alloys. The obtained results indicate that the use of nonlinear elasticity is essential for determination of $dE_{E}$/dP in the strained InGaAs/GaAs and InGaN/GaN quantum wells, while the inclusion of the nonlinear dependence of elastic constants on composition of InGaAs and InGaN alloys does not improve agreement between the theoretical end experimental values of $dE_{E}$/dP in the considered structures.

Opis:
Several strategies to form multicomponent films of functional polymers, with micron, submicron and nanometer structures, intended for plastic electronics and biotechnology are presented. These approaches are based on film deposition from polymer solution onto a rotating substrate (spin-casting), a method implemented already on manufacturing lines. Film structures are determined with compositional (nanometer) depth profiling and (submicron) imaging modes of dynamic secondary ion mass spectrometry, near-field scanning optical microscopy (with submicron resolution) and scanning probe microscopy (revealing nanometer features). Self-organization of spin-cast polymer mixtures is discussed in detail, since it offers a one-step process to deposit and align simultaneously domains, rich in different polymers, forming various device elements: (i) Surface segregation drives self-stratification of nanometer lamellae for solar cells and anisotropic conductors. (ii) Cohesion energy density controls morphological transition from lamellar (optimal for encapsulated transistors) to lateral structures (suggested for light emitting diodes with variable color). (iii) Selective adhesion to substrate microtemplates, patterned chemically, orders lateral structures for plastic circuitries. (iv) Submicron imprints of water droplets (breath figures) decorate selectively micron-sized domains, and can be used in devices with hierarchic structure. In addition, selective protein adsorption to regular polymer micropatterns, formed with soft lithography after spin-casting, suggests applications in protein chip technology. An approach to reduce lateral blend film structures to submicron scale is also presented, based on (annealed) films of multicomponent nanoparticles.

The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of resin content on AC magnetic properties of Vitroperm 800-based composite material to extend possibilities for application of this kind of material at higher frequency (up to 100 kHz). The samples of composite material were prepared in the form of the ring with outer diameter of 25 mm, inner diameter of 18 mm and height approximately 3 mm. Powder mixtures were prepared from Vitroperm 800 in partial nanocrystalline state and commercial termoset resins by mechanical mixing. The AC magnetic properties (losses) at maximum induction up to 0.5 T were measured by MATS-2010SA loop tracer in frequency range 1-100 kHz. The specific resistivity of the material was measured by the van der Pauw method. The magnetic properties of the composite rings were compared with the properties of the material prepared from Fe based powder supported by Höganäs. It was found out that the total losses of the Vitroperm-based soft magnetic composite are more than 10 times lower (at 10 kHz) than that for Fe-based one.

In this paper the results of investigations of pure and Ca-doped CoO thin films deposited by PLD technique are presented. The studies carried out for variable Ca content allowed to establish optimal conditions for good quality oxide films preparation. The microstructure, chemical/phase composition and morphology of obtained thin films were examined by means of diverse techniques (SEM, EDS, XPS and XRD). For estimation of deposited Ca-doped CoO films quality the nanohardness and scratch tests (adhesion) were performed. Obtained results confirm that using PLD technique it is possible to carry stoichiometric composition of (Co,Ca)O from target to single crystal substrate and allow to conclude that the calcium dopant concentration (chemical composition) influence on the morphology and measured properties of deposited (Co,Ca)O films.

The structure and magnetic properties of compacted microcrystalline NiFe (81 wt% of Ni) powder is investigated. The powder of NiFe alloy prepared by ball milling of ribbon (prepared by melt spinning) remains single phase material suitable for compaction in order to prepare soft magnetic material. The bulk samples were consolidated by uniaxial compaction of the powder in vacuum. By measuring of AC and DC magnetic properties it was found out that in bulk samples the displacement of domain walls is the dominant magnetization process, while rotation of magnetization vectors prevails in powder material.

In this study we report the application of synchrotron X-ray fluorescence, photoluminescence and Raman scattering techniques to the analysis of the incorporation of impurities in unintentionally doped ZnO nanowires. Highly ordered one-dimensional ZnO arrays were fabricated by an oxidation process of Zn metal electrodeposited in nanoporous anodic alumina template. X-ray fluorescence data show the contribution of residual elements into the ZnO nanowires growth. A rough analytical quantification of the main light and heavy chemical contents derives impurity concentrations below 1%. The optical efficiency of ZnO nanowires is strongly affected by non-radiative centers up to temperatures as low as 100 K. The photoluminescence was found to be totally dominated by optical transitions associated with the anodic alumina template. Finally, the Raman scattering provides no evidence of local vibrational modes or secondary phases, but it shows the unambiguous signature of the ZnO hexagonal phase.

The purification and functionalization of commercial multiwall carbon nanotubes was investigated. Carbon nanotubes (CNT CO., Ltd, Korea) were treated with boiling concentrated HNO_3 under a reflux condenser for about 50 h at 120°C in order to purify and oxidize the raw material. The oxidized multiwall carbon nanotubes were rinsed with deionized water until stabilization of the filtrate pH. Measurement techniques included elemental analysis (CHN), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermal analysis. With the measurement techniques used the following information was obtained: CHN analysis provided information about the quantitative composition of the following elements carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, scanning electron microscopy imaging provided information on shape, thickness and length of the nanotubes, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry analysis of information about surface atomic composition of the quantitative analysis, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry quantitative analysis of the atomic composition (metals, especially Fe, Al), the Fourier transform infrared studies provided information about qualitative analysis of surface functional groups $C_{x}O_{y}H_{z}$ (COOH, OH, COO) and thermal gravimetric-differential thermal analysis - quantitative analysis of thermal decomposition products. It was found that oxidation leads to the removal of amorphous carbon and forms mainly carboxylic functional groups linked to the nanotubes. The Fourier transform infrared spectra indicate the presence of some other structures, like ketone (quinone), acid anhydride, ether and epoxy groups. Nitric acid treatment also effectively removes aluminum oxide catalyst and iron catalyst from commercial multiwall carbon nanotubes.

Calculations were made to investigate the anharmonic properties of lead chalcogenides PbS, PbSe and PbTe at elevated temperatures by means of primary physical parameters viz. nearest-neighbour distance and hardness parameter using long- and short-range potentials. Higher-order elastic constants are computed up to their melting temperature for these crystals. The first order pressure derivatives of second- and third-order elastic constants, the second-order pressure derivatives of second-order elastic constants and partial contractions are also evaluated at different temperatures. As the experimental elastic constants are not available at high temperatures, hence our results were only compared with the available values obtained at room temperature. The nature of the elastic behaviour in these compounds was analyzed.
