Norwid’s concept of Literary Originality in the Light of the History of Poetics The article presents Norwid’s concept of literary originality with reference to selected terms from the European theory of poetry. Norwid’s reflections about writing function predominantly within the confines of his philosophical concepts, which were mostly inspired by the philosophy of Plato and Christian thought and were related to his vision of God, the world, man, and artist. One can discover, however, a rich set of terms coming from traditional poetics in the works of the author of Quidam. Norwid’s thinking about originality is firmly rooted in tradition and links diverse inspirations and threads in a distinctive way. As such it shows telling paradoxes by containing unequivocal objection to imitating nature and exemplary works. At the same time, it underscores Norwid’s reliance on the old masters, advocates for the freedom and authenticity of artists, and highlights the role of the form in the creative process. While not dismissing the contradictory categories of ‘obscurity’ and fragmentariness, Norwid also pays attention to the value of artistic perfection. His concepts do not form a closed system of aesthetic views. Instead, they constitute an elastic catalogue of indications whose employment requires combined work of the imagination, intellect, and emotions as well as the alertness of one’s conscience and spiritual energy. Norwid believed that the primary duty of art was expressing the truth about the world.

The article shows the model of the perfect Christian depicted by the Bishop of Carthage, St. Cyprian. This model is particularly interesting since it was formed during the persecution, which had a major impact on shaping the image of the perfect Christian. This paper consists of three main parts: the first - St. bishop Cyprian of Carthage and his time – in which the circumstances of his pastoral work and his works are given, the other - Perfection for all - shows a model of perfection that St. Cyprian proposed to all believers, and in the third part, the martyrs - „a fruit a hundredfold” of perfection - are portrayed. To them Cyprian admitted the highest degree of Christian perfection. For bishop Cyprian the Christian-martyrs, who perfectly fulfilled God’s commandments in everyday life and in the most perfect way they united themself with Christ in the suffering and in the death, were primarily a perfect model of the Christians. And this model of perfect Christianmartyr for decades after Cyprian - till the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great - was the main model of a perfect Christian.

The article presents a short description of the text as a collection of biblical quotes focused on such topics as the Mosaic Law (Book I), Christology (Book II) and Christian virtues (Book III) and also comments on the version of the biblical text that Cyprian cites. A survey of comparative studies showed that the biblical text cited by Cyprian departs from the Hieronim Vulgate. Secondly, Cyprian's writing is an autonomous treatise independent of Adversus Iudaeos Tertullian, written at the request of Quirinius, who aimed to provide the addressee and other Christians in Carthage tools in the form of biblical passages to fight the growing Jewish proselytism. As for the historical context of its creation, the treaty is part of the middle of the third century. Previous good relations between Christians and Jews in North Africa, as evidenced by even Jewish necropolises with Christian graves or inscriptions with a cross and a menorah, are beginning to break due to the growing Jewish proselytism and the growth of the Christian community.
Artykuł przedstawia krótki opis dzieła jako zbioru tekstów biblijnych skupionych wokół tematów: Prawo Mojżeszowe (ksiega I), chrystologia (księga II) i cnoty chrześcijańskie (księga III) a także ocenę wersji tekstu biblijnego, który Cyprian cytuje. Sondażowe badanie porównawcze pokazało, że Cyprian używał innej wersji tekstu biblijnego niż ta, która później stała się częścią Wulgaty Hieronima. Po drugie, dzieło Cypriana jest samodzielnym traktatem, niezależnym od Adversus Iudaeos Tertuliana, napisanym na prośbę Kwiriniusza, który stawiał sobie za cel dostarczyć adresatowi i innym chrześcijanom kartagińskim narzędzia w postaci tekstów biblijnych użytecznych w polemice z wzrastajacym prozelityzmem żydowskim. Pismo dobrze wpisuje się w kontekst historyczny polowy III wieku, kiedy to wcześniejsze dobre relacje pomiędzy chrześcijanami a Żydami w Afryce Północnej, jak to potwierdzają groby chrześcijanskie odkryte w nekropoliach żydowskich albo inskypcje łączące krzyż i menorę, zaczynają się psuć z powodu na rosnący prozelityzm żydowski i jednocześnie wzrost wspólnoty chrześcijańskiej.

The article presents a review of the collective monograph Strona Norwida. Studia I szkice ofiarowane Profesorowi Stefanowi Sawickiemu (edited by P. Chlebowski, W. Toruń, E. Żwirkowska and E. Chlebowska, Lublin 2008). The discussion of the contents of all 28 scientific articles published in the volume is the starting point for sketching a panorama of contemporary Norwid Studies and determining the contribution of Professor Stefan Sawicki to the development of this discipline.
Artykuł jest recenzją monografii zbiorowej pt. Strona Norwida. Studia i szkice ofiarowane Profesorowi Stefanowi Sawickiemu (pod red. P. Chlebowskiego, W. Torunia, E. Żwirkowskiej, E. Chlebowskiej, Lublin 2008). Omówienie zawartości 28 zamieszczonych tu artykułów naukowych stanowi punkt wyjścia do naszkicowania panoramy współczesnej norwidologii oraz określenia wkładu prof. Stefana Sawickiego w rozwój tej dyscypliny

The author begins with underscoring Norwid’s defence of the intellectual achievements of the Middle Ages in part XII of Rzecz o wolności słowa. It prompts her to speculate about the importance and trajectories of reflections on the Middle Ages in Norwid’s poetry in general. Subsequently, Halkiewicz-Sojak casts the topic against the background concerning the romantic fascination with the Medieval tradition and specifically Polish difficulties in adapting the European (northern) variation of that current. On the one hand, Norwid’s considerations upon Godfred’s attitudes in Tasso’s Jersusalem Delivered and Cervantes’s Don Quixote lead to the conclusion that a nineteenth-century poet can only repeat Cervantes’s character’s gestures; therefore, for the author the Medieval props will be the book and the candle rather than a continuation of chivalrous adventures. On the other hand, Norwid – especially in the early drama mystery plays – conjures up poetic worlds of the Slavic Middle Ages and focuses his attention on the Christian initiation of the Slavdom.
