Opis:
Polycrystalline samples of $PrNi_{1-x}Cu_{x}Al$ series were studied by X-ray diffraction, magnetization and specific heat. The hexagonal ZrNiAl-type structure is preserved in the whole series. Compounds with x up to 0.4 order antiferromagnetically with the Néel temperatures between 3 and 5 K. The rest of the compounds (x = 0.5-0.9) exhibits a transition into a spin glass state below the freezing temperatures around 4 K. The analysis of the specific heat data reveals a quasi-doublet ground state well separated from higher crystal field levels in the whole series.

Opis:
The temperature dependence of the magnetic specific heat was studied experimentally and theoretically in the semimagnetic semiconductor Pb$\text{}_{1-x}$Eu$\text{}_{x}$Te for x=0.027 and x=0.073, over the temperature range from 0.5 K to 15 K, in magnetic fields up to 2 T. In zero magnetic field at about 2 K there was a broad maximum in the magnetic specific heat, which was much higher than that predicted by the model of superexchange interaction between nearest neighbors; the maximum values increased with magnetic field. The experimental data were analyzed in the framework of a model which takes into account the spin splitting of the ground state of a single Eu2+ ion in the presence of local lattice distortions in the Pb$\text{}_{1-x}$Eu$\text{}_{x}$Te mixed crystal. The model describes well the experimental data, especially for lower x-values, where the contribution from singlets dominates.

In the present paper, the calculation of the phonon dispersion relations for alkali metals to second order in a local pseudopotential is discussed in terms of the real-space sum. Different forms of dielectric functions are employed to judge the varying effects of exchange and correlation on the phonon frequencies. The quantitative agreement of phonon frequencies for the alkali metals reflects, satisfactorily, the experimental trend.

We investigate the critical behaviour of the chemical potential and average occupation numbers using the extended s -f model with intersite Cooper pairing for systems with fluctuating valence. The model is able to describe phase transitions from normal ferromagnet to normal paramagnet at $T=T_{C}$, from superconducting paramagnet to normal paramagnet at $T=T_{S}$, as well as reentrant phase transitions with three critical temperatures $T_{S_{1}}, T_{C}$ and $T_{S_{2}} (T_{S_{1}} < T_{C} < T_{S_{2}})$. Present investigation, as well as recent results obtained for another models suggest one-to-one correspondence between critical temperatures of the system and kinks appearing in the temperature dependence of the chemical potential and average occupation numbers. This, in turn, indicates a possibility to apply the measurement of the chemical potential vs. temperature as an experimental universal tool when looking for phase transitions in solids.

In this work we present the study of the part of Ce(Ni,Cu)Al series from the pure CeNiAl to 30% of copper concentration, which illustrates the transition from mixed-valence state of CeNiAl to the trivalent state in CeCuAl. The work is based on X-ray diffraction, magnetization and specific heat measurement. The results indicate smooth transition between the mixed-valence and trivalent cerium state. The specific-heat data reveal increase of the Sommerfeld γ coefficient with copper concentration.

Quantum transfer matrix technique and numerically exact diagonalization method are applied to the Heisenberg spin systems to model ring-shaped molecules. Two cases are investigated: (i) a dozen of S = 1 spins with additional biquadratic exchange and (ii) a dimetallic molecule $Cr_7Cd$, where it is assumed that exchange anisotropy is determined in a local coordination system. In the latter case the calculated susceptibility is compared with experimental results.

The magnetocaloric effect of frustrated antiferromagnetic $HoB_{12}$ is calculated. The isothermal entropy change Δ S characterising the magnetocaloric effect shows a small positive change upon magnetisation below the transition temperature $T_{N}$, indicating a small inverse magnetocaloric effect. At $T_{N}$, Δ S shows clear scaling behaviour with the applied magnetic field. The adiabatic temperature change Δ T shows paramagnetic behaviour above $T_{N}$, despite strong magnetic correlations that persist in this temperature region. The adiabatic temperature change calculated for $HoB_{12}$ is appreciable.

The mixed spin-1/2 and spin-S (S>1/2) Ising model on a rope ladder is examined by combining two exact analytical methods. By the decoration-iteration mapping transformation, this mixed-spin system is firstly transformed to a simple spin-1/2 Ising model on the two-leg ladder, which is then exactly solved by the standard transfer-matrix method. The thermal variations of the zero-field specific heat are discussed in particular.

Zero-temperature limits of the local and global thermodynamic quantities in the nine-membered antiferromagnetic s=3/2 spin ring are investigated by means of numerical exact diagonalization. An anisotropic Heisenberg model with tunable bond defect reflecting continuously varying topology (from closed to open ring) is exploited. The frustrated and non-frustrated phases are identified in the ground-state phase diagram determined by a bond-defect strength and magnetic field. Near the phase boundaries significance of the thermal fluctuations affecting the estimates of the local magnetic quantities found earlier at T=1 K is revealed. For the global quantities the effects of thermal fluctuations are found much weaker. A sequence of the local magnetic moments is analysed and their experimental verification at the edges of the non-frustrated and within the entire frustrated phase is suggested at sufficiently low temperature.

We study antiferromagnetic properties of the two-band extended s-f model with fluctuating valence in the context of two mutually bound new effects of chemical potential critical behaviour, as well as of critical electron redistribution. In order to exemplify both phenomena we build phase diagrams of the system displaying the dependence of the critical Néel temperatures (T$\text{}_{N}$) of the system versus 4f (5f) level positions. The phase diagram consists of two different areas corresponding to antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. We plot the magnetizations and the correlation functions of the system as functions of temperature. Next, we investigate the temperature dependence of the relative average occupation numbers Δn$\text{}^{f(d)}$ and the chemical potential Δμ for a given 4f (5f) level position E$\text{}_{f}$. Plotting this quantities along the E$\text{}_{f}$ cross-section lines we observe small (of the order of 10$\text{}^{-4}$-10$\text{}^{-3}$) but well localized kinks exactly at the Néel temperature T$\text{}_{N}$. Last but not least, we plot the first derivative of the chemical potential dμ/dT which, as it shows clearly visible jumps at T$\text{}_{N}$, may turn out to be very accurate and sensitive (auxiliary) tool to find critical temperatures of the considered system. Moreover, we plot the difference μ$\text{}_{AF}$-μ$\text{}_{PARA}$ where we subtract a chemical potential value of a reference paramagnetic sample from the actual value of the antiferromagnetic system. Also in this case we report the observation of discontinuous change in slope at T$\text{}_{N}$. Our observations can be extended to point out to a new practical possibility of how to find experimentally the critical temperatures of the antiferromagnetic systems exclusively from the chemical potential measurements. We expect that the same type of measurement, according to our recent and present results, would also apply to all types of critical phenomena in real solids.

Magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization data showed the presence of a single spin gap of 23 (magnetization) ~27 (susceptibility) K, not double as observed for the ambient pressure phase. This result shows that the two kinds of chains of the ambient pressure phase have single, different spin gaps.

Using the Green function method it is shown that the deviation of the Curie temperature from its value calculated for continuous layers is related to the absolute value of the interlayer coupling parameter. The dependence of spin wave stiffness parameter on the interlayer exchange coupling is also found.

Magnetic measurements of a three-dimensional (3D) molecular magnet built of Mn₉[W(CN)₈]₆ clusters have been carried out to study its static and dynamic properties. Measurements of ac susceptibility in the presence of static magnetic field revealed slow magnetic relaxations. It was found that for the 120 Hz wave frequency the optimal static field which maximizes the imaginary component of the ac susceptibility is about 500 Oe.

Magnetic properties of four nFeVO₄/(1-n)Co₃V₂O₈ samples obtained in reactions between FeVO₄ and Co₃V₂O₈ (n = 0.96, 0.86, 0.84 and 0.83, samples designated S1, S3, S4, S5, respectively) have been investigated by DC magnetisation in field cooling and zero-field-cooling modes and EPR. DC magnetic susceptibility showed paramagnetic behavior of all samples in high-temperature range (T > 20 K) and transition to antiferromagnetic state at 16-18 K (depending on sample iron content). Additional magnetic freezing at 8 K was registered for S3-S5 samples containing larger amount of cobalt. The Curie-Weiss law in 100-300 K temperature range indicates that Co²⁺ is in the high-spin state (S = 3/2). From the parameters of the hysteresis loop observed for the samples it was calculated that 0.58% of all magnetic (Fe³⁺, Co²⁺) ions were involved in the ferromagnetic states. EPR spectra of the samples were recorded in high temperature range (T > 90 K). The temperature dependence of the spectral parameters (resonance field, linewidth, integrated intensity) suggested the Fe³⁺ high-spin ions coupled by antiferromagnetic interaction and clusters of ions play major role in EPR spectra.

In this review we briefly discuss the magnetocaloric properties of the manganites. It is evidenced that the maximum entropy change observed in manganites exceeds that of gadolinium (the prototype material for room temperature refrigerators). For the manganites characterized by second-order magnetic phase transitions the scaling hypothesis is discussed. It is shown that simple phenomenological model with only one fitting parameter, presented in this paper, satisfactorily describes experimental observations.

The magnetocaloric effect in $RCu_2Ge_2$ (R = Dy-Tm) was investigated by means of specific heat measurements. The compounds order antiferromagnetically at 6.2 K $(DyCu_2Ge_2),$ 5.6 K $(HoCu_2Ge_2),$ 3.0 K $(ErCu_2Ge_2),$ and 3.9 K $(TmCu_2Ge_2),$ and some of them exhibit additional magnetic transitions in the ordered state. In an external magnetic field the low-temperature specific heat changes significantly, which can be attributed to metamagnetic-like transitions. In this temperature region, the investigated samples show distinctly different magnetocaloric effect.

Lanthanide oxide nanoparticles were encapsulated inside of pores of highly ordered periodic silica of SBA15 type with hexagonal symmetry. The magnetic properties of such nanoperticles were investigated. The structural characterization using the SAXS, XANES, XRD, and $N_{2}$ adsorption measurements showed the presence of lanthanide oxides of $Ln_{2}O_{3}$ type (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Gd, Eu), with the size of about 5 nm, incorporated in nanoporous channel system. Their magnetic properties, studied by SQUID apparatus, showed the weak antiferromagnetic ordering at 2 K in the nanocomposites $Gd_{2}O_{3}$@SBA15, $Pr_{2}O_{3}$@SBA15 and $Nd_{2}O_{3}$@SBA15. This behaviour of the nanoparticles is caused by blocking process of magnetic moments, which at 300 K exhibit the superparamagnetism, evidenced from ZFC/FC magnetization.

Small peak was revealed in the C/T vs. $T^2$ dependence at around 3 K, which are field sensitive (the electronic specific heat coefficient γlinearly decreases with the increase in magnetic field), and might be connected to some kind of magnetic ordering. The coefficient γis suppressed also by Ti substitution.

Structural analysis of $[Ni(en)(H_2O)_4][SO_4] \cdot 2H_2O$ was performed and it suggests that the crystal field should play a dominant role in the magnetic properties of the system. The analysis confirmed that the compound can be treated as a spin 1 single molecule magnet with nonmagnetic ground state introduced by easy-plane single-ion anisotropy D/$k_B$≈11 K and neglecting in-plane anisotropy E/D <0.1.

Conventional spin-wave approach relies on an expansion around a relevant classical (unentangled) ground state or equivalently the ground state in the mean field approximation for the quantum model. However, for systems which may admit valence bond ground states, such as the staggered J-J' Heisenberg antiferromagnet, single site mean field approximation is obviously an incorrect zeroth order approximation. In this paper, we introduce a mean field approximation for clusters consisting of two spins connected by a strong bond in the aforementioned model. We identify the quantum critical point and calculate the ground state magnetization within this cluster mean field approximation in one and two dimensions. Finally, we derive an effective dimer Hamiltonian, in the standard basis operator formalism, which may be a basis for further spin-wave like expansions around the cluster mean field approximation ground state.

In the present work we have focused on the preparation and magnetic study of coordination polymer formed by Gd(III) cations as nodes and formate (HCOO¯; FOR) anions as charge compensating linkers. The prepared complex with formula ${[Gd(μ_{3}-FOR)_{3}]}_{n}$ was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and high-energy powder X-ray diffraction. The structural study showed that complex is formed by 3D polymeric network with the shortest Gd-Gd, distances of 3.998 Å. The magnetic properties of the complex were studied by magnetic susceptibility $χ_{M}(T)$ and magnetization M(H) measurements. The results show on the weak antiferromagnetic coupling at low temperatures represented by the Weiss constant θ=-0.468 K. The value of effective magnetic moment $μ_{eff}=7.57μ_{B}$, which was estimated from the experimental data is close to the theoretical value for systems with S=7/2. Correlation between crystal structure of complexes and magnetic properties is presented.

The importance of an exact calculation to find basic physics is highlighted. In addition, the dependence of scattering length on the van der Waals interaction between the atoms and the dependence of scattering length on reduced-mass of the system are derived which is completely new information in the field of science.

Peculiar magnetic properties of 1D arranged composite consisting of Fe nanoparticles coated by insulating SiO2 layer were studied. Silica layer promotes the self-organization of 4 nm iron nanoparticles to the chain-like structures. Magnetization study shows that prepared nanoparticles exhibit very strong inter-particle magnetic interactions, which lead to long-range ordering of nanoparticles magnetic moments. Magnetic properties show superferromagnetic behaviour. The low value of room temperature coercivity, the existence of electrical insulating silica layer and small size of iron nanoparticles favour studied material for potential usage in microelectronic devices designed for high voltage signals modulated by high frequencies.

The Y₈Co₆₂B₃₀ amorphous alloy is a collinear ferromagnet. The Arrott plot, the Kouvel-Fisher method, critical isotherm analysis and magnetic field dependence of maximum magnetic entropy changes were the main analytical tools used to determine the nature of the ferromagnetic/paramagnetic phase transition. Values of critical exponents (β, γ, and δ) were calculated and were convergent with those characteristic for mean-field model. It suggests that long range ferromagnetic interactions are playing main role in investigated alloy and the phase transition was confirmed to be of a second order according to the Banerjee criterion.

Connexin(Cx)43high cells are preferentially recruited to the invasive front of prostate cancer in vitro and in vivo. To address the involvement of Cx43 in the regulation of human prostate cancer DU145 cell invasiveness, we have analysed the nanoelasticity of invasive Cx43high sub-sets of DU145 cells by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The Cx43high DU145 cells displayed considerably higher susceptibility to mechanical distortions than the wild type DU145 cells. Transient Cx43 silencing had no effect on their elastic properties. Our data confirm the relationship between the invasive potential, Cx43 expression and nanoelasticity of the DU145 cells. However, they also show that Cx43 is not directly involved in the maintenance of DU145 invasive phenotype.

Heat capacity and electrical resistivity of high-quality $Na_{0.77}CoO_{2}$ single crystals was systematically studied as a function of temperature and magnetic field. Anomalies at 20 K have been observed both in the heat capacity and the electrical resistivity. The broad bump in the heat capacity indicates a smeared magnetic phase transition. Magnetic fields up to 9 T, oriented perpendicularly to the ab plane, reduce the temperature of this anomaly in accordance with the assumption of A-type antiferromagnetic ordering. The low temperature upturn observed in resistivity below 20 K for slow cooling is also suppressed by the magnetic field. This anomaly is probably the consequence of the interplay of several different mechanisms, including the Kondo effect, electron-electron interactions, and electron-phonon scattering.

Opis:
The ferromagnetic Curie temperatures $T_{C}$ derived from a temperature derivative of AC susceptibility are equal to 106 K and 161 K for the nanocrystalline and polycrystalline manganites, respectively. The magnetic susceptibility and electron spin resonance confirm that the Griffiths-like phase exists above the Curie temperature in paramagnetic matrix of the nanocrystalline manganite. An analysis of electron spin resonance spectra allows to detect the upper temperature limit for an existence of Griffiths-like phase at temperature $T_{GI}=290 K$, which is somewhat higher than the $T_{G}$ of the magnetic susceptibility.

Opis:
Ternary $Ho_3Cu_4X_4$ compounds exhibit very complex magnetic phase diagrams. The rare earth ions occupy two non-equivalent crystal positions. Within both magnetic sublattices, magnetic moments exhibit different magnetic ordering temperatures. Moreover, in light of our results, it seems that both sublattices are weakly coupled between each other. This may be observed as independent changes of propagation vectors etc. The major difference of ordering temperatures between both compounds is likely related to substantial change of interatomic distances. Consequently, completely different crystalline electric field effects are observed.

Opis:
In this paper we discuss the results of experimental studies of specific heat and magnetic susceptibility of chain compound Ni(C$\text{}_{11}$H$\text{}_{10}$N$\text{}_{2}$O)$\text{}_{2}$Ni(CN)$\text{}_{4}$. We have observed a Schottky type anomaly at T=2.2 K in a temperature dependence of specific heat and the compound was identified as a S=1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with the subcritical exchange coupling D/k$\text{}_{B}$=5 K, D/|J|=5.2 and the strong in-plane anisotropy E/k$\text{}_{B}$=2.8 K. It has been found that the in-plane anisotropy affects the region of validity of a diluted exciton model [1] and a strong coupling model [2] for S=1 Heisenberg chains with the strong planar anisotropy. The analysis suggests that the in-plane anisotropy should be considered in any attempt to find a compound potentially located in the boundary of Haldane and "large-D" phases.

Opis:
In the present work the behaviour of cluster excitations in magnetic field, B, parallel to the easy axis was experimentally studied by the measurements of KEr(MoO$\text{}_{4}$)$\text{}_{2}$ and CsDy(MoO$\text{}_{4}$)$\text{}_{2}$ specific heat, C, vs. B dependence studied at a constant temperature. Corresponding Monte Carlo simulations of C revealed that despite of the fact that the Ising exchange-coupling models proved useful for a sufficient description of the specific heat of these dipolar systems in B=0, the analysis of current experimental data requires a partial renormalization of exchange-coupling constants previously obtained from B=0 analysis. The influence of crystal field effects and long-range character of spin correlations is discussed.

Thermodynamical properties of one-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg model with dimerized nearest- and uniform next-nearest-neighbour interactions are studied by the numerically exact quantum transfer matrix method and the results are applied to CuGeO$\text{}_{3}$. Suzuki-Trotter formula is used to obtain a classical system with spin σ=3/2 and effective interactions between nearest-neigbours only. Magnetic susceptibility curve is calculated and compared with new experimental results performed in a wide temperature range, revealing the presence of frustration in the model proposed for CuGeO$\text{}_{3}$.

The numerically generated series expansions complementary to widely used computer simulations of the Monte Carlo type, are presented. The effective algorithm for generation of graphs, which constitute the basis of series expansions for spin-lattice systems, is introduced. The use of the numerically generated series expansions to calculate the free energy for the eight-vertex model is explained and discussed in detail.

The quantum transfer-matrix method was applied to study the finite-temperature static properties of the spin S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains in a wide range of the single-ion anisotropy and temperatures. The high-resolution quantum transfer-matrix simulation data are obtained for the zero-field susceptibility, specific heat as well as for the field-dependent magnetization. The microscopic parameters of a number of real quasi-one-dimensional compounds are found from fitting procedures, some theoretical approaches are numerically verified and an extension of the technique to a non-uniform bond alternating molecular magnets is also put forward.

Opis:
A numerical transfer-matrix approach and an exact diagonalization technique exploiting the point-group symmetry are worked out in the framework of quantum statistical mechanics and group theory for finite rings. They are applied to spin models of the high nuclearity cyclic clusters [Mn(hfac)$\text{}_{2}$NITPh]$\text{}_{6}$ and Ni$\text{}_{12}$(O$\text{}_{2}$CMe)$\text{}_{12}$(chp)$\text{}_{12}$(H$\text{}_{2}$O)$\text{}_{6}$(THF)$\text{}_{6}$. The microscopic parameters of both molecules (J/k$\text{}_{B}$=350±10 K and J/k$\text{}_{B}$=8.5 K±0.5, g=2.23±0.01, respectively) are then obtained from a fit of the theoretical susceptibility curves to the experimental results which are supplemented for Ni$\text{}_{12}$ by new low-temperature measurements.
