Opis:
This essay problematizes the complicated relationship between speciesist and racist oppression. Even though the lived experience of exploitation and the long struggle for justice and rights makes racialized groups especially sensitive to the suffering of the Other, the link between  human and non-human animals’ interests is, suprisingly, not so easy to make. Things are additionally complicated by the fact that veganism is usually perceived as a white, privileged lifestyle, therefore culturally alienating to people of color. This sense of alienation can be explained by the interiorization of colonial notions of identity, which label people of color as „natural meateaters”. The goal of radical vegans of color, a group of activists rapidly gaining visibility, is to dismantle the colonial matrix of power and struggle for a world free of all forms of oppresion. This essay attempts to present their ideological positions.
Niniejszy esej podnosi kwestię skomplikowanych związków między szowinizmem gatunkowym i rasizmem. Podczas gdy wyostrzona wrażliwość na cierpienie słabszego i doświadczenia w walce o równouprawnienie społeczne powinny pomagać przerzucić pomost między interesami skolonizowanych zwierząt ludzkich i pozaludzkich, w świadomości kolorowych mieszkańców społeczeństw osadniczych weganizm postrzegany jest zazwyczaj jako styl życia uprzywilejowanego białego człowieka - kolonizatora. Na skutek uwewnętrznienia kolonialnych koncepcji tożsamości praktykujący kolorowy weganin czuje się często wyobcowany ze swojej własnej kultury. Do demontażu matrycy kolonialności i solidarnej walki o świat wolny od wszelkich form opresji nawołują najbardziej w ostatnich latach aktywni  kolorowi weganie. Analizie ich poglądów poświęcona jest główna część eseju.

The aim of the study is to evaluate the concept of culture in the face of social heterogeneity. Focusing on the distinction between homogeneity and heterogeneity on the example of musical culture the author focuses on four questions. Does the concept of culture in its theoretical formulation mean that it necessarily crosses the border of the formal set-theory ontology and leads to the multiplying of the entities? Are there acceptable criteria for differentiating the cultural aspect of human affairs from other aspects? Can the practice of distinguishing the less or more unified wholes called cultures be justified when confronted with the irreducible complexity and heterogeneity of social life? Is the concept of culture, though useful for the analysis of non European and past European societies, still operative for the analysis of contemporary societies?

If so, what impact might it have on the identity of the Americanist? What is an Americanist?  The paper argues that this new wave of theory illuminates the confluence of American Studies and critical thought, both involved in a simultaneous movement of deterritorialization that pushes them outside their established boundaries. Games differ in the degree of freedom given to a gamer in shaping the identity of the in-game character, or avatar, and in many games avatar-formation is an important part of game structure, providing a lot of game satisfaction, and requiring as much time and involvement as the game-play itself. The games under discussion are adaptations of H.D. Thoreau’s Walden. The choice of games stems from the observation that identity, freedom, and limitation are important themes of Thoreau’s work, which is reflected in the games under discussion. The three games discussed in the article are, thus, treated as modernist and postmodernist readings of a literary text, giving the reader/gamer more or less limited possibilities of shaping the character/avatar. For an abstract in English, scroll down.Artykuł omawia możliwości kształtowania postaci w grach komputerowych, dla wielu graczy jest to możliwość wyrażenia i modyfikacji własnej tożsamości. Gry różnią się bardzo swobodą, jaką gracz ma przy kształtowaniu tożsamości postaci-awatara, którą gra, przy czym w wielu współczesnych grach jest to ważna część struktury gry, dostarczająca graczom dużo satysfakcji i wymagająca od nich równie dużo czasu i zaangażowania, co sam proces gry. Omówione gry to komputerowe adaptacje dzieła Walden Henry'ego Davida Thoreau. Dobór przykładowych gier jest uzasadniony tym, że tożsamość, wolność i ograniczenie to ważne tematy dzieła Thoreau, znajdujące swoje odzwierciedlenie w grach opartych na tekście. Trzy omawiane gry zostały zatem potraktowane jako modernistyczne i postmodernistyczne odczytania tektstu literackiego, dające mniej lub bardziej ograniczone możliwości kształtowania postaci-awatara gracza.The article discusses possibilities of character building in computer games, which for many gamers is a way of expressing and modifying their own identity. The article offers an comparative insight into two, parallel, narratives concerning a nautical event: one visual, and one verbal.  The argument is based on the juxtaposition of Robert Cushman Murphy's photographic rendition of the so-called Nantucket sleigh ride (the stage of a whale hunt, in which the harpooned animal, attempting to flee his oppressors, tows the whaleboat behind him) with his description of the same phenomenon, which he included in his diary A Logbook for Grace. Whaling Brig Daisy 1912–1913 (first published only in 1947). The reflections stemming from the analysis concern the importance of the Barthesian punctum in the context of the interpretive power of the image, which, ultimately, leads to conclusions concerning the significance of emotions in the hermeneutic process of filling the spots of indeterminacy. Ultimately, the article demonstrates how, through his glass lantern images, Robert Cushman Murphy offers his audiences the “realist” truth, employing “modernist means” to “romantically” emulate the emotions.

Aleksiej Riemizow, Andriej Bieły, Jewgienij Zamiatin, Borys Pilniak. Zwrócenie uwagi na utwory pisarzy pierwszego popaździernikowego dziesięciolecia pozwala autorowi artykułu wykazać, że ekspresjonizm de facto uformował się jako strategia artystyczna determinująca rozwój ówczesnych kierunków i prądów literackich. Summary The aesthetic principles of the expressionism and its destiny in Russian literature The influence of expressionism on the Russian literature is considered in this article, which is designated by a number of authors: A.Remizov, A.Belyj, E.Zamjatin, B.Pil'njak. Addressing to the works of the writers of the first post-October decades allows the researcher to state that expressionism became an artistic intention, which influenced trends of the literature of those years.

The indefinite character of liminality seems to infallibly invite radical solutions: the margin is the locus of the aporia: a non-encounter with a non-language in a non-space. It is there that the Spanish conquistadors located the native peoples of the Americas, construing them as “out of place” in the place in which they had dwelled since the times immemorial; it is there that the thinkers of the Age of Reason would relegate phenomena defying rationalist argumentation or empirical proof, yet undeniably felt as present; it is finally there that individuals driven by empathy end  up today amidst the ruthless political tug-of-war between 21st century nationalisms and progressive advocacy of freedom and equality. The mirage of greatness, poisoning the minds of many, calls into existence discourses of degradation and deprivation; the self-proclaimed “righteous” need a scapegoat to purge their own sins; the necessary condition of “being great” is the legitimization of the fallacy of someone else’s insignificance. with alt-facts ousting hard facts from the public space, with Orwellian media shamelessly creating realities based on the binarity of familiarity and enmity, with all visible attempts to silence the academic humanities, arts and letters by means of massive cuts in funding, the marginalization of those who find the “he who is not with us is against us” philosophy abhorrent gains significant momentum. But it is not in the margins that the monsters awaken: it is in the very heart of the well-defined center that fear rules unchecked while coercion, wearing white gloves, and walking hand in hand with blatant lies that boost fearful egos, facilitates turning a blind eye to cynical oppression, rendering the alleged winners actual victims of their own would-be “greatness.” More thresholds, more limits, all designed to keep the Others out, but all trapping those drawing the demarcation lines within, are being called into existence with increasing speed and intensity; yet the tighter the grip of the stultifying discourse is, the larger the space of the margin, the more obvious the aporias.

The article is dealing with the place taken by language reflection in modern literary theory. Poststructural breakthrough in the Humanities had become a period of opening up to new inspiration, and most of all to “language learning”. Much more important than the direct impact of the deconstruction was a change of consciousness: hereby the structuralist paradigm as the dominant way of talking about literature became exhausted. One academic discourse was replaced by the multitude of languages , and the multiplicity of rhetoric. The certainty of interpretation was replaced by interpretative doubts. That distrust embraced everything: not only the methodology, but the literature itself. A literary work ceased to be an objective structure, and its meaning a function of order. In this situation of discipline language, as art material, becomes the object of special attention of authors and researchers. The significance of language experiments is present in modern Polish prose, especially in prose by Wiesław Myśliwski.

MY WONDERMENTS Moje zdziwienia (My Wonderments) is a column authored by Henryk Markiewicz, professor emeritus of the Jagiellonian University, and one of the most outstanding Polish historians and theoreticians of literature.
