Opis:
The documents registered in the Polish Crown Chancery books (Metrica Regni) are used in combination with other sources in works on the history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In this article the approach is different – the analysis is focused on the Crown Chancery documents only. The questions are; how many of the documents, registered in the short period 1587–1591, described the situation in Livland and Kurland (i.e. today Latvia)? What are the main topics of this acts? How was the situation in Livland seen by the chancery clerks and if their view is supported by the modern historiography? The answer is surprisingly positive. About 10% of all registered documents concern Livland and we do get a differentiated view on the subject. This newly acquired province was a place of many quarrels and fights. The officers from Poland and Lithuania had to organize the administration and to placate the old nobility and burghers. The religious differences did not make this task easy, since the king Sigismund Vasa would like to renovate the structures of the Roman Catholic church in Livland. Most of the documents are testimonies of some grants; to the Polish – Lithuanian gentry, to the old Livonian gentry, even to some burghers, who supported the Commonwealth in the struggle with Moscovia. We can conclude that acts registered in the Polish Metrica do correspond accurately with the view on Livland represented by the modern historiography, although the texts are quite laconic and only rarely we can see a continuation of a case in next documents.

Opis:
The paper presents preliminary results of research on the crown chancery of Ladislaus IV Vasa based on 12 books of inscription of the Crown Metrica (Metrica Regni), which reflect one particular aspect of the chancery’s work, namely recording the acts issued by the Office of the King. The offices of chancellor and deputy chancellor were held consecutively by six persons, most prominently by J. Zadzik, P. Gembicki, and J. Ossoliński. The chanceries had retained their modus operandi since the reign of Sigismund III. Every new deputy chancellor took staff members over from the departing chancellor. With time, small groups of royal secretaries in the chanceries grew in importance, the volume of recorded documents decreased, and more documents were made in Polish (14%) as compared to the dominant Latin. Anyway, throughout the reign of Ladislaus IV the chancery created a total of 70000 documents, being most active during the Diet’s sessions

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present changes in the position of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania towards the Polish Crown within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the years 1569–1791. The analysis was based on the transformation of both common (monarch, Sejm) and separate (central and local offices, judicial system and law) institutions in the context of economic, social and cultural changes of the era. Gradually, the Commonwealth was transforming into a state in which Lithuania was not so much one of its two parts – along with the Crown, but one of its three provinces – along with Lesser Poland and Greater Poland. It was, however, a special province since it had its own ministers, offices, courts, treasury and fiscal courts along with its own codification of political and private law. The rule introduced in 1673 that every third Sejm was to be held in Grodno, however, was rarely observed. The reasons for this change were: the smaller population of the Grand Duchy, its lower fiscal income along with the war damage and territorial losses suffered in the mid-17th century. This transformation was also facilitated by the fact that the Lithuanian political system and laws became increasingly similar to the Polish ones. Another factor was the slow creation of a sense of political community among nobles of both the Crown and Lithuania. This feeling was born not only out of the same rights and privileges, but also owing to the immigration of the Crown noblemen to the lands of the Grand Duchy and joining – by marriage – Lithuanian noble families, which was especially the case among magnate families. During this period, the common culture of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth based on the Polish language – lingua franca of the whole state – was also created. Other languages also functioned in the Polish- -Lithuanian state, but Polish, enriched by Lithuanian, Ruthenian, Latin, German and Oriental elements, began to dominate. The Government Act of 3 May 1791 did not mention the Grand Duchy at all, but created a common government for the whole of Commonwealth – the Guard of Laws and Great Commissions. Mutual Pledge of the Two Nations, unanimously adopted on 20 October 1791, constituted an attempt to return to the dualism from the era of the Union of Lublin. This act granted Lithuanians half of the commissioners in the military and fiscal commissions and – in the future – in the police commission. Lithuania also retained separate ministers, offices, a separate treasury and tax judiciary. Thus, the gradual unification of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was still visible, while maintaining some separate aspects, which were important for Lithuanians, albeit secondary in the scale of the entire state. Nevertheless, this process was interrupted by the upcoming partitions.

Opis:
The article deals with taxation of tobacco and tobacco products in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. After tobacco was imported into Poland, its use spread extremely quickly; initially it was used as snuff, and from the 18th century onwards, smoking in pipes became prevalent. Importantly, tobacco and tobacco products were then regarded as a medicine to prevent and cure almost all diseases. Duties on tobacco/snuff were first imposed in 1643 in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and in the Crown tobacco monopoly was introduced in 1659. From that time, tobacco/snuff duties were imposed regularly in Lithuania; in the Crown duty on these products was imposed once again in 1677, and then in the 1690s tobacco monopoly ended throughout the Polish Republic. The issue was revived only in the times of King Stanisław August Poniatowski, when tobacco monopoly was introduced, initially managed by a private company called Kompania Tabaczna, and then, in the 1690s, by the state-owned Manipulacja Tabaczna. However, over the whole period under consideration, revenues from tobacco/snuff taxation were relatively small.

The paper presents the inventory of the Crown Treasury of 1515 whose original has been preserved in the Central Public Archives (AGAD, parchment nr 4460). The inventory was written down on 5 November 1515, after the office of the Treasurer of the Kingdom of Poland was taken by Mikołaj Szydłowiecki. It contains a detailed description of three Polish royal crowns: the Crown which was used for the coronation of Polish kings (Corona Aurea Regni Poloniae), the Queen’s Crown (Corona Reginalis Maiestatis), and the Homagial Crown (Corona Homagialis), as well as the other insignia of the king’s power, also a list of the objects kept in the Crown Treasury: objects of religious cult with their description, objects that contained Christological relics, things with protective properties and objects having historical value as well as other precious objects collected there. The review of the Crown Treasury was done on King Sigismund I’s order and was carried out by his closest associates, Deputy Chancellor of the Treasury Piotr Tomicki, Chancellor Krzysztof Szydłowiecki and Jan Boner.

Opis:
The article deals with issues related to the spatial and temporal functioning of the revenue system in the sixteenth-century Crown of the Kingdom of Poland, on the example of Greater Poland. The chronological scope of the work covers the period from the turn of the fifteenth century, when the Polish parliamentary system had begun to take shape, to the early seventeenth century, or more precisely, to the establishment of the Crown Treasury Tribunal in 1613. The authors make an attempt to determine the suitability of the spatio-temporal perspective in the research on the history of taxation by analysing selected aspects of the extraordinary tax collection process. The study presented here also touches upon the problems related to the transformation occurring in the revenue system of the Crown. The system gradually changed from the centralised model, with decisions regarding tax matters being made by the Sejm while the monarch exacted control over the process through his offi cials, to a more decentralised model, in which local nobility assemblies played a greater role in managing state finances.

In 1683 Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski was one of the most important politicians in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He was part of anti-royal opposition, which was against alliance with Austria and war against Ottoman Empire. Lubomirski’s letters date before Warsaw Sejm indicates that he supported war against Muscovy. During Sejm he fulfilled his role as Grand Marshal, but at the same time he worked towards French interests. When the king and his supporters managed to defeat political opposition, Lubomirski switched sides and claimed that he never supported the king’s opponents. He then participated in signing a treaty with Austria and also enlisted few military units to take part in war against the Turks. After 1683, Sejm - for the time being - limited his political activities. Despite political defeat, he managed to achieve some personal successes – became owner of the town of Jazdów (Ujazdów), while his brother Hieronim was nominated for the office of Crown Court Marshal.

Opis:
In period between two wars against Ottoman Empire (1677–1683) Crown (Polish) troops were stationed in set-up quarters on the Polish-Turkish border. Main idea behind it was to defend new borders – after losing Podolia to Turks – but also to protect civilian population from the troops stationed (and subsequently marching into the theater of war) in other parts of the country. It was the first time when such system of regular military barracks was introduced. Moreover, soldiers stationed there were required to produce food for themselves. Such picture, drawn from the diaries written during the period, require though further confirmation or verification, especially based on further research of the archives in Lviv and Minsk.

Opis:
Grassroots initiatives of the faithful of the city of Brześć, supported by the clergy, have been approved by the Ordinary of the Diocese of Pińsk - Bishop Zygmunt Łoziński, who on 16 October 1938 erected the parish in the Kiev Suburb in Brześć. For a growing number of the inhabitants of Brześć in the interwar period of the Second Polish Republic, the above- mentioned parish was established to meet the religious needs of the local Catholics. In August 1937, Rev. Wacław Piątkowski was mandated, by the Bishop of Pińsk, to create a parish with an indication of the Kiev Suburb, where he soon began celebrating daily liturgy in a temporary chapel. Organized in November 1937, the Church Social Construction Committee undertook the care of raising funds for the implementation of a costly venture. A temporary chapel was consecrated on 14 August 1938 by Rev. Wacław Piątkowski, a parish priest. On 30 July 1939 the Bishop of Pińsk consecrated the foundation stone of the church, and next day the construction of the foundations began. Until the outbreak of World War II, a concrete footing under the foundation of the church was made along with the necessary excavations. War and occupation: the Soviet and German prevented the implementation of the initiated project. During those years, priests performed pastoral service, not only in their own parishes but often helped other parishes which were deprived of priests because of the arrests of clergy and their deportation to concentration camps, as well as due to the moving of many priests to the west of the created in 1945 Polish-Soviet frontier on the Bug. Thanks to the clergymen who, despite everything, stayed after the war in the Diocese of Pińsk within the borders of Byelorussian SSR, the continuity of the hierarchical authority of the Church was preserved. That authority was exercised by the vicars general until the church administration had been organized within the borders of the Republic of Belarus.

Opis:
The political activity of Adam Kazanowski (1599–1649) Adam Kazanowski and his entire political career was closely associated with king Władysław IV (Ladislaus IV Vasa). As the monarch’s favorite, and since 1637 also one of the senators, Kazanowski became involved in issues relating to the state’s policy. Due to his close relations with the king and consequently his royalist views, he often identified with the opinions represented by the monarch and sided with his will. Yet on some occasions, Kazanowski’s attitude was far removed from the views represented by the monarch. Being close to the monarch’s inner circle, he participated in the majority of Parliament sessions (Diet sessions) during the reign of Władysław IV. Shortly after the monarch’s death, he was also involved in political issues associated with Chmielnicki’s Uprising. Yet due to the unfavorable attitude of king Jan Kazimierz (John II Casimir Vasa) and the continually worsening state of his health, his political activity became considerably less intense. The one-time king’s favorite ended his life not long afterwards, on 25 December 1649.

Through the whole of his military career, Jacek Boratyński served with one formation – winged hussars (husaria). Between 1666 and 1676 he was a companion (towarzysz) in two hussars’ banners (companies): initially in one of Aleksander Michał Lubomirski, voivode of Cracow, then after 1668 in the one of Jan Sobieski, grand marshal and grand Crown (Polish) hetman (and since 1674 king as Jan III). Then in 1676 he became lieutenant in the hussars’ banner of Jan Gniński, voivode of Chełmno (since 1682 Crown vice-chancellor). In such capacity, as officer of Polish lancers, he took part in Gniński’s embassy to Istanbul (1677–1678) and in relief of Vienna in 1683. He was part of the group of soldiers that were under patronage of grand Crown hetman Stanisław Jabłonowski. Between 1676 and 1696 (exact date unknown) Boratyński was one of the commanders in charge of hetman’s regiment (pułk) of cavalry. Thanks to military service and patronage, especially from Gniński’s side, he received land office ranks – first cup-bearer (cześnik) of Sanok, then deputy cup-bearer (podczaszy) of Żydaczów. His military service is very good benchmark for biographical studies of other Crown officers of the same rank.

This review paper is an attempt of a general outline of the Czech history (for the whole Crown of Bohemia) from the perspective of Wroclaw, not of Prague, which is justified by the particular role of the Silesian city, which at that time rose to the role of the second to Prague capital of the state. The article is also an attempt to counter the axiology present in Czech historiography, which accentuates the Hussite period. Such “revolutionary” vision of the history of the state led to a peculiar anomaly – the royal power of Sigismund diminished almost entirely, like if the state of Bohemia ceased to be a monarchy. The present paper is also an attempt to bring back into the awareness of historians the Habsburg period in the Czech history (1438–1457), which was longer than the 13 years of the rule of king George of Podebrady (1458–1471), yet it disappears in the general view of the past. The result is the myth of Habsburg assumption of the throne of Bohemia in 1526, while it should be described as the return of the Austrian dynasty to this throne.

Opis:
During the Spring of Nations in the lands of the Crown of St. Stefan (1848-1849) traditional ties of friendship, with the possibility of a military confrontation occurring with one, two invaders attracted a large crowd of Polish volunteers for the formation of the Hungarian honveds. About 4,000 Poles were fighting directly in the ranks of the revolutionary army, and enrolled to the national legions under the command of Generals Joseph Wysocki alongside the Transylvanian Army Fieldmarshal Joseph Bem. Among them, about 20 individuals who will be later on commanders of the guerrilla armed troops of the January Uprising (1863-1864). For this reason, it is worth recalling the experience that the military group acquired during the battles for the Hungarian Plain, Slovakia, Bukovina, Moldavia, Banat, Backa and Transylvania.
