Opis:
A literary text can become space for transformation of the reader. In some cases, through the impact of content and a specific form, reading becomes not only an intellectual experience based on the interpretation of the already read text, but the very act of reading is understood as an act of metamorphosis. In the article two Croatian literary works are discussed: a pastoral novel by Petar Zoranić written in the 16th century and lacrimae, an epic poem by Ivan Gundulić dating back to the 17th century. Both pieces are characterized by the use of genre conventions to show and cause the transformation of an individual. In the novel, the character experiences transformation from a young man overwhelmed by love fever into a conscious citizen-Patriot. In the epic poem, a sinner is affected by the act of repentance and tries to return to the path of God’s grace. Reading the text can become an act of transformation thanks to the use of narrative, which is conceived as a way to organize experience by a subject who identifies the literary hero’s metamorphosis with his/her own transformation in real time.

The paper deals with the relationship between Antun Gustav Matoš and the most important people of the town’s cultural and political life at the turn of the 19th into 20th century. The relationship between Matoš and the town Đakovo is considered from two perspectives: the first being the perspective of Matoš, which is based on his two travel accounts and numerous writings about Đakovo, i.e. the Bishop of the Diocese of Đakovo, Josip Juraj Strossmayer; the second perspective is that of Đakovo-based writers and considers their attitudes towards Matoš, with a special regard to the Bishop Strossmayer. The relationship between Antun Gustav Matoš and the Bishop Strossmayer was complex, even though it was, seemingly paradoxical, one-sided. Strossmayer was in many, ways an extraordinarily important person for Matoš, who wrote many texts about Strossmayer, for Strossmayer however, Matoš was only one among many young Croatian writers who were asking him for help and wrote about him. Strossmayer refused to provide Matoš with patronage, therefore the aim of this paper is to establish the reasons behind that decision, and determine why Croatia’s most prominent patron could not, or refused to, acknowledge one of Croatia’s most important writers.

Antun Gustav Matoš, central figure of Croatian Modernism became an icon and a legend yet in life, which, after the artistʼs death, only strengthened and his influence on the further shape of Croatian literature is difficult to deny. On the other hand, he is not the very often mentioned author the literary journal „Krugovi”, and also he is not considered in the first row of the most influential literary patterns for this generation of writers. However, Antun Gustav Matoš’s image that emerges from the pages of „Krugovi”, although incomplete and fragmentary, is extremely interesting. Young writers attempted to comprehensively educate their literary model reader, so they drew attention to artists who were the most valuable for the native literary tradition. Understanding and acknowledging the importance of his achievements and well-deserved place in the history of Croatian literature, young artists were able, however, to an analytical and critical approach, in the majority of cases presenting a solid argument, not limited to duplication of hackneyed slogans.

The article based on the bibliography of translations of Croatian literature in Poland from 2007 to 2013 discusses the role of translators and editors in the crosscultural and interliterature communication. During that period several texts` compilations and anthologies of Croatian literature (mostly the latest) has been published in Poland. The mentioned books are the results of the Polish‑Croatian cooperation of writers, translators as well as researchers (e.g. [1] the selection of Miro Gavran’s works or [2] the project entitled "Kroatywni" that involved Croatian and Polish researchers) or, on the contrary, they are result of independent work of one translator (e.g. the anthology of Croatian poetry by G. Łatuszyński). Investigating diverse anthologies of Croatian literature printed in Poland and Croatia from 2007 till 2013 the question of the literary canon and the difference between the idea of the literature in the original and target culture are risen.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to show the novel Otok snova (Island of Dreams,1996) by Damir Miloš as an example of a dystopian text. The author portrays the presented world of the book, first, as a postmodern consumer space where the pursuit of attractions is a dominant human activity, second, she presents the same picture through the prism of hyperbolic deformation. In the novel the original idyll takes the contours of hell, as she suggests. However, the reflection does not finish in a defeatist way. The author indicates a possibility of transition from dystopia to micro-utopia, but only in the case of reading the novel in the context of other works written by Damir Miloš.

Paper deals with a conception of Antun Gustav Matoš authorship, regarding his own definition of his life as a work of art. Performing his authorship in a variety of literary texts, letters and notices, he lived in extremes, being flaneur, dandy and a bohem, world traveler and a nationalist ideologist, what influenced reception of his work until recent period. Critical and historiographic, as much as other literary works related to AGM follow this „author-centered” positions regarding his life as a work of art, as much as his literary texts as a reflection of his life. Latest Croatian „Matosiana” book, Dubravka Oraić Tolić̕ Reading Matoš (Čitanja Matoša, 2013), attests some traditional critical assumptions regarding authorship of this canonical writer end expands them in a new context. Different theories of literary canon formation, especially those grounded on feminist or psychoanalytical approach, call in question usual strategies in creation and understanding AGMs authorship, aestheticism and anti-modernism.

The year 2014 in Poland did not teem with many publications of Croatian literary works. In journals of culture and literature there were published a dozen or so poems and prose excerpts, less essays and plays. Among book publications attention should be paid to the collection of essays by Dubravka Ugresić Karaoke culture, the selection of poems by Ivan Herceg and the poetic tome by Dorta Jagić Sofa on the market. The last mentioned was awarded during the prestigious literary contest „The European Poet of Freedom” taking place in Gdańsk. Opis:
Zoranić built the problem of geopolitical and real time and space in his highly complex literary work through the use of genre. The work is constructed based on of Sannazzaro’s Arcadia, inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphosesand Dante’s Inferno, with an epistemological framework dedicated to Matijević and written according to the style and philosophy of Petrarch and the national folklore of love poems. In addition, the importance of literaturein an existentially threatened community is strictly related to the dichotomy of the epistemology of the appraisal of poetry as present from the pre-Platonic epoch to Zoranić’s humanistic debates. Zoranić speaks in favour of the poet as a medium of God (poeta theologus). Just like his models (especially Petrarch and Dante as supporters of studia humanitatis) he relies on church authorities (Saint Jerome, Augustine, Cassiodorus and Saint Isidore of Seville). Therefore, the author manages to capture in this poetical and cultural context the personal issues presented in literature (in Petrarch’s pastoral themes) as well as community-related issues (paradise and an existentially threatened community). As a result of a journey through shepherds’ retreats, the area of deželji that is at the same time Arcadia, theAvenue des Champs-Élysées and Paradise Lost, transforms into a wasteland. The destroyed cities and strongholds along the Krka canyon (the locus horridus as a symbol of the seized bašćina [ fatherland]), down the river Krkafrom its source to the mouth (catharsis/ re-birth) are symbols of the young poet’s turning from personal literature (lyrical poetry) to serious anti-Ottoman literature, aimed at saving literature’s identity as well as the bašćinian. The description of the deserted land – a symbol of a historical martyr place – is a message about the community’s role as sacrificial lamb. The return to Nin (the pseudo-mythological oldest town in the bašćina) brings the search to an end, but as a return to the starting point of the individual and the community. Zoranić introduces an allegory to the end of Mountains (Planine): the farewell at the beautiful Jela’s grave in his native Nin is a literary farewell to Petrarch’s Donna, notwithstanding whether it is a girl or the poet’s mother. The author’s decision to deal with national issues is reflected in the shift from Jela’s grave to the celebration of the famous bašćinianina [grave] of Juraj Divnić.

Opis:
This article aims to present and describe the situation of the literary language of the Molise Slavs. In the last decades, various scholars have expressed their views on this issue with some of them claiming that Molise Slavic is a literary language, whilst by the other ones this vernacular was denied such right. Although Alexandr D. Dulichenko – who coined the term „Slavic literarymicrolanguage” – dated its literary traditions back to the 19th century, some scholars perceive the 18th or 20th centuries as the beginning of the literature written in Molise Slavic (MSl). Consequently, this led to ambiguity that this article is trying to clarify. Until recently, this vernacular was prevalently used for poetry and short prose, but with recent publications of Nicola Gliosca’s novels, Molise Slavic is now on its way to develop as a full-fledged literary language. According to typology presented by Antoni Furdal, MSl can now – with presence of translations – be classified as a „literary language with limited sphere of use”.

Hrvatska književnost — i kultura — u Poljskoj često stoga nose ponajprije odrednicu „balkanskog” i „postjugoslavenskog”. S druge strane, poljska književnost u hrvatskim prijevodima uglavnom se predstavlja reprezentativnim autorima, čiji se opus smatra kanonskim i u izvornoj kulturi. Ogledanje jedne kulture u drugoj donosi širu sliku predstavljanja Drugoga i otvara problem odnosa kulturne auto - i heteropredodžbe.
In this article, we have tried to draw an image of Croatian literature in Polish culture, as well as vice versa, in the last 25 years, based on bibliographies and articles on translations in PLS. It has been concluded that, due to translators’ choices of Croatian exile literature, works perceived in the source culture as non -canon, themes related to war, Yugonostalgia and authors whose work belong to the “borderline” of a few nations, Croatian literature in Poland exists as “Balkan” literature. On the other hand, choices of Polish literature in Croatia mainly concerns classic Polish authors. Both cases draw a wider picture of national imagery — a hetero -image — in the target culture.
