The  Birch  Tree  (1967),  directed  by  Ante  Babaja,  is  one  of  the  most outstanding  achievements of Croatian film modernism. It touches on the problem of rural life, which is unusual for film modernism. The work is inspired by Slavko  Kolar’s rural prose, naive paintings by artists  from Hlebine  and  north  Croatian  folk  rites  and  songs.  In  this film,  Babaja  presents a naturalistic interpretation of rural existence, where the human spirit is stifled by dull material  and  inert  nature. The  Birch  Tree  is  also  an  example  of  a  film  Gesamtkunstwerk  that combines not only the elements of various arts (painting, literature, music, theatre), but also two historical-cultural models of artistic creation: the modernist and the folk.

In the novel entitled The Better Half of Courage, Ivan Slamnig elaborates on two types of narrative namely, a traditional internal story derived from the poetics of realism and a postmodern frame story streaked with the elements of the jeans prose. In the article, culinary motifs presented in both narratives are taken into consideration in order to expose their function in Slamnig’s novel. The article also tries to answer the question whether the dietary code is subordinated to the both forms of discourse. The analysis of the culinary themes reveals a process of braking off with tradition in the so-called traditional narrative, and attempts of retaining tradition in the postmodern narrative. In consequence, an apparently traditional modern pilgrim, who does not respect the order of traditional rituals and remains cautious in his consumption behaviour, turns out to be condemned to painful results of his choices while a postmodern vagrant as an unfulfilled consumer-glutton keeps drawing from tradition as well as from the present day what provides him with various pleasures. Furthermore, the analysis of the culinary code of the novel allows the authoress to confirm a thesis on the presence of postmodern effects in the both “parts” of the novel.

Opis:
The unequal import of (literary) translations of male and female authors from Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia in German will be critically examined in this article regarding the following three aspects: 1. The gender differences in the quantity of translations; 2. The selection strategies for the translation of female authors, especially in the period from 1992 to 2012 (which mostly covers the period of the Yugoslav wars); 3. The role of female actors in the translatory field. The answers to these questions will show whether in this period one could speak of the “gender translation gap”.
Uvoz (književnih) prijevoda autorica i autora iz Bosne i Hercegovine, Hrvatske i Srbije na njemački jezik bit će u ovom članku kritički ispitan s obzirom na sljedeća tri aspekta: 1. Rodne razlike u količini prijevoda; 2. Strategije odabira prijevoda autorica, posebice u razdoblju od 1992. do 2012. (koje najvećim dijelom obuhvaća razdoblje jugoslavenskih ratova); 3. Uloga aktera u translacionom polju: Jesu li one djelovale kao prevoditeljice i posrednice za autore jednako često kao što su prevoditelji bili angažirani kao posrednici za autorice? Odgovori na ova pitanja pokazat će može li se u naznačenom razdoblju govoriti o fenomenu koji nazivam “gender translation gap”. Ovaj se pojam koristi u sociološkim i ekonomskim studijama o globalnim razlikama u plaćama između muškaraca i žena — i bit će ovim tekstom uveden u teorijsku raspravu o rodu i prijevodnom tržištu.

This article deals with the Croatian and Serbian translation of the Silesian dialect, which appears in Wojciech Kuczok’s novel Gnój. The analysis includes the dialect stylization present in the source text, as well as the strategies and techniques used for its translations. The various translation solutions used by the translators also were compared and evaluated.
U radu se analiziraju strategije i tehnike prevođenja šleskog dijalekta kao posebnog jezičnog koda i naziva kulturno specifičnih elemenata vezanih uz Šlesku na hrvatski i srpski jezik. U obzir se uzimaju replike likova romana Gnój Wojciecha Kuczoka (hrv. Glib, srp. Pogan) koje je autor posebno istaknuo u tekstu pomoću navodnika, drugim riječima „živi šleski govor“. Polazišna je točka definiranje stilizacije književnog teksta u stručnoj literaturi, a potom slijedi prikaz posebnosti dijalektizacije u izvornom tekstu romana. Nadalje se opisuju, uspoređuju i ocjenjuju metode stilizacije teksta koje su prisutne u hrvatskom i srpskom prijevodu. Na osnovi prikupljenih podataka hrvatsku se strategiju prevođenja zbog potpune neutralizacije može opisati kao „prešućivanje“, dok je srpska strategija prevođenja svojevrstan „dijalog“ s originalnim tekstom, u kojemu se rabi supstitucija temeljena na kolokvijalizaciji i djelomičnoj dijalektizaciji idiostila likova.

A contrastive view of adjectives in Croatian, Polish and English: subjectification as a local phenomenonA study of English adjectives (Athanasiadou 2006) suggested that subjectification (defined as the degree to which the conceptualizer plays a role in construing the objective scene; Langacker 2000) may be helpful in examining the various uses of adjectives in English. In this paper we attempt to do the same, comparing and contrasting three languages: English (as the point of reference), and Croatian and Polish. Croatian and Polish were selected because they allow relatively free combinations, with the caveat that Polish uses postposition for classifying senses. We examine whether subjectification may be taken as the organizing principle behind the prenominal, postnominal and predicative positions found in the three languages, i.e. whether the role of subjectification is global – working across constructions, or local – working within a construction. Examples from three languages showed that although subjectification does play a role in the various positions, it may not be taken as the organizing principle behind the differences. We argue that this is due to the fact that subjectification is a local phenomenon which works within a single construction, which is delimited formally and functionally. This is corroborated by other subjectified constructions. We believe that this is due to the gradual nature of subjectification, which requires recoverable links to previous stages.

On 6 November 2019, the Croatian Competition Agency brought one of its latest decisions concerning dominance abuse on Croatian electronic communication market. When asked to assess the behaviour of the dominant incumbent, Agency had to deal not only with incumbent’s position in the electronic communications markets, but also with spillover of its power to electronic media market. In its ruling, the Agency concluded that exclusivity licencing terms regarding premium football content do not qualify as the abuse of dominant position. While the decision in itself might represent only an interesting read, if considered in the context of Agency’s previous practice, powers and influence of other Croatian regulatory authorities, it might also represent the long-awaited evidence of the need to shift perspective and invoke improved rules for antitrust cases concerning electronic communication operators in Croatia.
Le 6 novembre 2019, l’Agence croate de la concurrence a rendu une de ses dernières décisions concernant l’abus de position dominante sur le marché croate des communications électroniques. L’Agence a dû se prononcer non seulement sur la position de l’opérateur dominant sur les marchés des communications électroniques, mais aussi sur les répercussions de son pouvoir sur le marché des médias électroniques. Dans sa décision, l’agence a conclu que les conditions des licences d’exclusivité concernant les contenus premium de football ne constituent pas un abus de position dominante. Bien que la décision en elle-même ne représente qu’une lecture intéressante, si elle est considérée dans le contexte de la pratique antérieure de l’Agence, des pouvoirs et de l’influence d’autres autorités de régulation croates, elle pourrait également représenter la preuve tant attendee de la nécessité de changer de perspective et d’invoquer des règles renforcées pour les affaires d’antitrust concernant les opérateurs de communications électroniques en Croatie.

In modern art, the boundaries between artist and spectator are often blurred as the spectator is engaged in the interpretation process and thus in the creation of an artwork, a process referred to by Marcel Duchamp as the "transubstantiation" of objects into art. However, this communication of artistic intent provides room for error, misinterpretation, and reinterpretation (accidental or intentional) of the artwork's intended meaning. Duchamp refers to this as the "art coefficient," which is mathematically explained as the difference between the artist's intended, unexpressed idea and what they unintentionally expressed. The idea of artistic intent, or lack thereof, was toyed with by Duchamp and the artists who followed in his footsteps, including some protagonists of the post-WWII Croatian art scene (Ivo Gattin, Goran Trbuljak, Braco Dimitrijević, and Tomislav Gotovac) who were involved in emerging art movements such as Art Informel, Conceptual art, and the neo-avantgarde, respectively. This paper puts forward works by Croatian artists who experimented with (un)intentionality and haphazardness by employing new artistic techniques, leaving room for (intentional) error and chance, or challenging the artist's and spectator's role, often by exploiting the latter to do their work for them.

U ovom radu problematizira se konkurentnost hrvatskoga gospodarstva. U teorijskim poglavljima rada, na temelju sekundarnih izvora podataka prikupljenih „desk“ metodom (istraživanje za stolom), prikazana je konkurentnost hrvatskoga gospodarstva i koncept pet konkurentskih sila prema Porteru. U tu svrhu korištena je znanstvena i stručna literatura te Internetski izvori. Uz sekundarne, u radu su prikazani i primarni rezultati istraživanja, koji predstavljaju odgovore ispitanika prikupljene metodom internetske ankete. Ispitanike su predstavljali zaposlenici hrvatskih izvoznih poduzeća, a njihovi odgovori obrađeni su metodom deskriptivne statističke analize. S tim u vezi, cilj istraživanja u ovom radu predstavlja rangiranje utjecaja Porterovih pet sila na konkurentnost hrvatskih izvoznih poduzeća, što je provedeno statističkom analizom varijanci. Predmetno istraživanje tj. sekundarni i primarni podatci prikazani u ovom radu preuzeti su iz doktorske disertacije autora ovog rada.
This paper discusses the competitiveness of the Croatian economy. In the theoretical chapters of the paper, secondary data sources are based on and collected by the desk research method. These chapters present the competitiveness of the Croatian economy and the concept of five competing forces according to Porte. For this purpose, scientific and professional literature and Internet sources were used. In addition to the secondary ones, the paper also presents the primary results of the research, which represent the answers of the respondents collected by the method of an online survey. Respondents were represented by employees of Croatian export companies, and their answers were processed by the method of descriptive statistical analysis. In this regard, the aim of the research in this paper is to rank the impact of Porter’s five forces on the competitiveness of Croatian export companies, which was conducted by statistical analysis of variance. The subject of this research, with secondary and primary data presented in this paper, is taken from the doctoral dissertation of the author of this paper.

Put na Plitvice (The Road to Plitvice, 1860) is the first of the travelogue in Croatian language describing an expedition to the Croatian Lake District. The work of art is of significant “world-creating” and “culture-creating” value, introducing the Plitvice Lakes into the Croatian national text and into the national landscape, hence the biblical allusion in the title. It will therefore be a world-creating narrative, of bringing into existence and therefore giving a symbolic dimension of the work of art.I focus on the landscape-painting aspects of the text, understanding landscape as the manner of constructing and formulating the world, as a way of perceiving and incorporating it into cultural traditions. It is therefore rough, monumental, wild like a traversed space, which should be included in the category of picturesque and sublimity. Trying to interpret oneself and the other in the world, the traditional Man has established a real world and an otherworld. Specific herbal and animal attributes were ascribed to particular people who allegedly had the power to communicate between worldliness and transcendence. Also some human characteristics were linked with herbal and animal mediators. These attributes were folklorized as miraculous powers. Such supernatural beings from South Slavic traditional conceptionsof the world have been largely associated with the pre-Christian deities and their degradations, based on the observed real attributes of the vegetal and animal species. The interdisciplinary comparative way of treating South Slavic folklore real-unreal motifs through time and space in this article is its ethnological, animalistic and anthropological contribution.

The paper deals with the relationship between Antun Gustav Matoš and the most important people of the town’s cultural and political life at the turn of the 19th into 20th century. The relationship between Matoš and the town Đakovo is considered from two perspectives: the first being the perspective of Matoš, which is based on his two travel accounts and numerous writings about Đakovo, i.e. the Bishop of the Diocese of Đakovo, Josip Juraj Strossmayer; the second perspective is that of Đakovo-based writers and considers their attitudes towards Matoš, with a special regard to the Bishop Strossmayer. The relationship between Antun Gustav Matoš and the Bishop Strossmayer was complex, even though it was, seemingly paradoxical, one-sided. Strossmayer was in many, ways an extraordinarily important person for Matoš, who wrote many texts about Strossmayer, for Strossmayer however, Matoš was only one among many young Croatian writers who were asking him for help and wrote about him. Strossmayer refused to provide Matoš with patronage, therefore the aim of this paper is to establish the reasons behind that decision, and determine why Croatia’s most prominent patron could not, or refused to, acknowledge one of Croatia’s most important writers.

Archival research is of great importance for the study of old Croatian literature, as a large part of the body of literary texts has been preserved in manuscripts to the present day, and many of them are kept in archives. Although at its beginnings Croatian national philology was strongly focused on archival work, in the 20th century this kind of research was abandoned, despite the fact that there was still a lot of unanalyzed material left in the archives, as well as many possibilities for correction or supplementing previous conclusions. Thus the handwritten Kajkavian songbooks, especially the secular ones, have been only partially examined. In addition, some songbooks from the Croatian State Archives have never become an object of research. This article draws attention to the importance of fundamental archival research, without which it is impossible to properly draw a picture of the Kajkavian element of old Croatian literature.

Evidentials articulate the source of information on which a statement is based, which means that they also involve the speaker’s position towards the sentence content. In this paper, after defining the subject of the research and describing various typologies of evidential strategies, we analyse the pragmatic values of linguistic expressions that articulate the various degrees of a speaker’s involvement with regard to stated claims, which for their part represent speech acts used to endorse the veracity of a statement. Evidential strategies are frequently used to diminish responsibility for the veracity of claims, that is, they may serve as a means of distancing oneself from the sentence content, a discourse mechanism that the speaker may employ in order to avoid potential negative impacts that overly assertive claims might contain. In defining evidential strategies, we consult linguistic research as well as research on justification logic. The goal of this paper is to show that these terms can be adequately defined only by also taking into account the analysis of pragmatic impacts in a specific communicative and social situation.
Gli evidenziali esprimono l’origine dell’informazione di cui si è in possesso, il che concerne altresì l’atteggiamento del parlante nei confronti del contenuto proposizionale. Nel presente contributo, dopo aver definito l’oggetto delle nostre riflessioni e aver delineato i vari tipi di strategie evidenziali, analizzeremo i valori pragmatici delle espressioni linguistiche che producono diversi gradi di coinvolgimento del parlante verso le sue asserzioni che, a loro volta, rappresentano atti linguistici con cui si sottolinea la verità dell’enunciato. Gli evidenziali sono spesso usati per ridurre il grado di responsabilità riguardo all’attendibilità delle asserzioni, ossia, una strategia evidenziale si può presentare come un tipico dispositivo dissociativo, una risorsa discorsiva a cui si fa ricorso per evitare gli eventuali effetti negativi che possono derivare dall’uso di asserzioni troppo forti. Per definire la classe degli evidenziali intendiamo rifarci agli studi svolti sia nell’ambito della linguistica che in quello della logica di giustificazione. L’obiettivo del presente lavoro è di mostrare che tali nozioni possono essere descritte in modo adeguato solo prendendo in considerazione l’analisi dei loro effetti pragmatici all’interno di un concreto evento comunicativo e sociale.

Opis:
The article discusses the problem of the avant-garde in Croatian poetry during the second half of 20th century. It supports the thesis about the continuity of the avant-garde before and after World War II, and perceives the artistic and literary experiments of the neo and post-avant-garde as a part of a long avant-garde tradition. The analysis brings forward the different perceptions of avant-garde in the works of Radovan Ivšić and Josip Sever, and post-avant-garde poets of 1970s and 80s.
