Opis:
The paper is an attempt to describe the reception of the idea of rationalism in order to represent its reworking in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Croatia in three areas – physics, theology and politics. The authoress reveals how the method developed by Newton in the field of natural sciences has found an application in other disciplines of knowledge, and most of all in theology. In Croatia, this resulted in the application of the category of Kantian reason to ethical considerations. As a rationalist project in the field of politics, cameralism is indicated, an economic doctrine popular in the German and Austrian territories which was closely connected with the development of the enlightened monarchy and bureaucracy in the early modern period.

The paper concerns the formation of the Croatian ethnic community in the Austro-Hungarian region in the 16th century, the author tracks the development of the literary language of the Croats in western Hungary since the 1750s and monitors establishing contacts with the literary language and orthography changes in Croatia in the second half of the 19th century. It was explained how the expressions Burgenland (Gradišće), Burgenland Croats (Gradišćanski Hrvati) and Burgenland Croatian language (gradišćanskohrvatski jezik) came to use after the first world war. The codification of Burgenland Croatian literary language is shown in 3 periods: 1. between the two world to the present. The main codification works (dictionaries, grammar books and orthography) in Burgenland Coratian literary language published after 1980s have been mentioned.

Opis:
The linguistic situation in medieval Croatia was fairly dynamic. The present article discusses the stratification of linguistic culture in the Middle Ages as regards its division into the three registers (high, middle, low) inherited from ancient rhetoric and poetry and received in the Middle Ages. We conclude that there was no strict division among the three languages according to function in the Middle Ages, and that the languages themselves did not constitute styles or registers. The Old Croatian language possessed all three registers (high, middle, low) already in the Middle Ages. However, the hybrid Čakavian-Church Slavic variety as well as the Croatian redaction of Church Slavic were not used as everyday (in)formal business/colloquial codes, so that they did not develop a middle and low linguistic register.

This paper analyses and compares the linguistic picture of freedom, or rather, the concept of freedom in these two Croatian ethnic/language communities (Molise Croatian and Burgenland Croatian), whose language has been developing independently for centuries under the strong influence of the linguistic cultures within which they represent Slavic islands (Romance influence in Molise and German influence in Burgenland, although there is some Hungarian and Western Slavic influence among Burgenland Croats). This research relies on the main theoretical foundations and methodological assumptions of the Polish (Lublin) ethnolinguistic school (with certain limitations). After an introduction, the first part of the following chapter on the concept of freedom shall contain a discussion on the basis of lexicographic descriptions and written sources, while the second part shall contain a discussion on the basis of the results of the survey.

European models for the Croatian language handbooks in the 18th centuryUntil the 19th century Croatian language handbooks, namely grammars, dictionaries and ortography books, were mostly bilingual and multilingual. Only at the begining of the 19th century was the first grammar of Croatian written in Croatian published, and in the second half of the same century the first monolingual dictionary – Academy’s Dictionary was published. The origin of this is not in the language itself. When writing these multilanguage handbooks, the authors followed domestic predecessors, as well as foreign. This work is an attempt to reveal those foreign language models that Croatian linguists in the 18th century followed and on the example of one metalexicographic theme – usage labels – to show development of Croatian 18th century lexicography within the European lexicography.

However, Antun Gustav Matoš’s image that emerges from the pages of „Krugovi”, although incomplete and fragmentary, is extremely interesting. Young writers attempted to comprehensively educate their literary model reader, so they drew attention to artists who were the most valuable for the native literary tradition. Understanding and acknowledging the importance of his achievements and well-deserved place in the history of Croatian literature, young artists were able, however, to an analytical and critical approach, in the majority of cases presenting a solid argument, not limited to duplication of hackneyed slogans.

Opis:
Antun Gustav Matoš and Antun Radić were leading the Croatian intellectuals of their era. Radić, an ethnologist, formulated the concept of culture, in which the most important significance for the national identity was attributed to the people. He considered peasantry authentic and free of contaminations, accusing the elite of cosmopolitanism and abandoning of the Croatian source values. Meanwhile, for Matoš the most important factor in the Croatian culture was opening to the foreign influences and to their creative force. As a consequence, the opposition between the writer and the ethnologist appears, corresponding to the concept of open and closed culture. Despite the use of the same dichotomy of the elites and the people, each of them assigns different values of both cultural strata. Radić politicizes the peasantry and tries to bring it to the public sphere, pretending to defend the values of the indigenous Croatian culture, while Matoš, regardless of his political nationalism, creates the elitist vision of open and inclusive culture.

Opis:
The political transformation in Croatia is inextricably linked with the civil war, in a decisive and brutal manner ending the Yugoslav era. The new reality required the creation of a cinematography that will become independent and write its own story. In the 1990s, the conservative narrative of the ruling party, led by the first Croatian president since the proclamation of independence, Franjo Tuđman, caused the directors to reach for patriotic and Christian motifs. This was, among other things, confirmation of a special mission, of which the ruling elite was convinced, and which consisted in “civilizing” its Balkan neighbours. It was only after Tuđman’s death that filmmakers were able to afford more freedom, both in terms of means of expression and motives. Directors came to the fore, whose youth fell at the moment of the explosion, and later the apogee of the armed conflict. The article takes into account three films created after 2000: Fine Dead Girls (Fine mrtve djevojke, dir. Dalibor Matanić, 2002), The Lika Cinema (Kino Lika, dir. Dalibor Matanić, 2008) and Sorry for Kung Fu (Oprosti za kung-fu, dir. Ognjen Sviličić, 2004). These are films that take advantage of the narrative of contrast: we (Croats) versus them (Serbs, Germany, West), and depart from the subject of war, but still subtly refer to it. Thanks to the topics raised, the directors managed to create – though not comprehensively – a cross-section of post-transformation society, struggling with both the new capitalist reality and the aftermath of wartime experiences.

A contrastive view of adjectives in Croatian, Polish and English: subjectification as a local phenomenonA study of English adjectives (Athanasiadou 2006) suggested that subjectification (defined as the degree to which the conceptualizer plays a role in construing the objective scene; Langacker 2000) may be helpful in examining the various uses of adjectives in English. In this paper we attempt to do the same, comparing and contrasting three languages: English (as the point of reference), and Croatian and Polish. Croatian and Polish were selected because they allow relatively free combinations, with the caveat that Polish uses postposition for classifying senses. We examine whether subjectification may be taken as the organizing principle behind the prenominal, postnominal and predicative positions found in the three languages, i.e. whether the role of subjectification is global – working across constructions, or local – working within a construction. Examples from three languages showed that although subjectification does play a role in the various positions, it may not be taken as the organizing principle behind the differences. We argue that this is due to the fact that subjectification is a local phenomenon which works within a single construction, which is delimited formally and functionally. This is corroborated by other subjectified constructions. We believe that this is due to the gradual nature of subjectification, which requires recoverable links to previous stages.

Transformations of utopia in the Croatian insular prose of the second half of 20th and the first half of the 21st centuries based on examplesThe article is an attempt to show a different means of presenting the newest Croatian literature than through topics such as the problem of the country’s national tradition, patriotism, post-communism, and issues of identity and emigration, which seems to be the most popular tendency among Polish researchers. Placing her research in the regionalistic stream, the author of the article discusses Croatian insular prose through the category of utopia. She sees The lost homeland [Izgubljeni zavičaj] by Slobodan Novak as an example of modern utopia, interprets The Island of Dreams [Otok snova] by Damir Miloš as a postmodern dystopia and perceives A Guide Across the Island [Vodič po otoku] by Senko Karuza as a vision of a new, post-postmodern type of utopia. Przemiany utopii w chorwackiej prozie insularnej drugiej połowy XX i początku XXI wieku na wybranych przykładachArtykuł jest próbą pokazania innego sposobu prezentowania najnowszej literatury chorwackiej aniżeli poprzez takie tematy jak problematyka narodowej tradycji kraju, patriotyzm, postkomunizm, kwestie tożsamości i emigracji, co wydaje się najbardziej popularną tendencją wśród polskich badaczy. Autor artykułu, wpisując swoje badanie w nurt regionalistyczny, omawia chorwacką prozę insularną poprzez kategorię utopii. Izgubljeni zavičaj Slobodana Novaka widzi jako przykład utopii modernistycznej, Otok snova Damira Miloša interpretuje jako postmodernistyczną dystopię, zaś Vodič po otoku Senka Karuzy postrzega jako wizję nowego rodzaju utopii post-postmodernistycznej.

Opis:
Croatian ethnologists’ and agriarians’ dream of sourceIn the first half of the 20th century, the connection between ethnology and politics in Croatia was exceptionally strong. Ethnology has become a tool to build national cohesion, and the main discourse is sought in the authentic aspects of Croatian culture, which could distinguish it in particular from Serbian or, in general, from Yugoslav culture. The central category of discourse, both ethnologic as well as the political, is the concept of source. A key theorist and activist who developed the concept of authentic Croatian cultural sources, and entered it in the political agenda, was Antun Radić. Together with his brother Stjepan, he founded the peasant party, which after 1918 became the Croats’ main political force. The Radić brothers pointed out that only folklore preserves cultural purity, and thus peasants should be the source of the resurgence in Croatian identity. During the short lifetime of the Croatian Banovina (1939–1941), this policy and its accompanying ideas became the official ideology, marked by the extraordinary influence of ethnology. This paper points out the dangerous aspects of the idea of source, related to the concept of closed, exclusive culture exposed to arbitrary purification. Chorwackich etnologów i ludowców marzenie o dotarciu do źródłaW pierwszej połowie XX wieku związki etnologii i polityki były w Chorwacji wyjątkowo silne.

Autobiographism has been noticeably conquering the Croatian theatre which results in specific artistic projects, mainly falling into the category of theatre of the real. This material calls for a description of strategies, functions and potentials. The most important here is the freedom to (re)construct identity – performativity – communication and interaction. The styling of an autobiographical archive and its extension into action allows adopting a new view and interpreting historical events and current social problems differently. This phenomenon is manifested in selected performances which involve staging a dramatic text, adapting prose or journalistic text, compiling and processing various cultural texts, incorporating the performers’ confessions and observations, and developing documentary material. Descriptions of the latest performances confirm reactivity of the theatre, its power to concertize and subjectivize, as well as to model the audience’s attitudes.

Croatian modernism
Opis:
This article deals with the poetry of Julije Benešić (his collection Istrgnuti listovi – Torn Pages) in the context of Croatian modernist poetry based on three assumptions: the first, deductive one is that Benešić’s literary, literary-historical, theatrical and public personality is a potential metonymy of the entire Croatian culture of the first two decades of the 20th century; the second, literary-historical assumption is that the choice to use free verse can be read as a counter-modernist gesture against rationalism and structure of rhymed verse of Croatian modernist poetry; third, from the cultural-historical point of view, it is assumed that Benešić’s poetical profile is a reflection of his counter-modernist attitude that was shaped beyond the dominant poetical practices of modernism. The goal of this presentation is as much a cultural-historical as it is a literary-historical one, aimed at proving a thesis by which a small poetical contribution by Julije Benešić is synecdoche for the condition and the atmosphere of Croatian culture of the late modernism and the first interwar years. The notion of counter-modernism is historiographically restricted here and encompasses Benešić’s disputing statements in relation with the dominant paradigm in synchrony with the modernist period. The choice of free verse is understood as a statement of notion about the restraints of the poetics of rhymed verse of Croatian modernism. Since free verse was not part of the canon at the time, Benešić tried to use it to legitimize his own work and democratize the system of poetical competencies.

Opis:
The paper starts from the assumption that Croatian modern lyric, from Matoš to Maleš, is haunted by various monsters, phantoms and mutants, and possessed by ghosts. Phantasmal hair speaks, the body changed by illness acquires autonomy, bird-men, space-twins and angels inhabit the humanized world, the dead seek eternity, the turtle measures itʼs own existence in relation to space and time, and Jesus-fish according to the degree of its own evolutionary transformation, while language cyborgs and hybrid beings are born. The lyric about monsters is itself a monstrous discourse. In this discourse human existence is necessarily contaminated by the abhuman and the parahuman, language includes its own mutations, and the encounter with meaning depends on the ultimate deformation, hybridization and disappearance of meaning. Thus, in the very center of our humanity, in the artistic form that determines the measure of the humanity of our community, questions about what is humane and inhumane, how to determine the boundary between them, and is not the general understanding of humanity always-already determined by oneʼs own inhuman or a-human are raised. Looking at a series of lyric texts, the paper will analyze these relationships and subsequently show their possible political and legal effects. I will refer to theoreticians who read the lyric as a linguistic event and performative type of utterance (J. Culler, P. de Man, B. Johnson, and others) and to thinkers who, to say it simply, perceive the ideas of equality, law and justice as phantasmal, mutated, scandalous or monstrous democracy (G. Agamben, J. Rancière, J. Derrida, J-L. Nancy and others).

Opis:
Borders within borders: A new regionalism in contemporary Croatian literatureThe article is an attempt at a synthetic presentation of Croatian literature researchers’ reflection about regionalism in the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first century. The author observes that there is a tendency to see Croatian literature as one that produces two different models of texts in terms of poetics and philosophy – the northern, which is “Central European,” and the southern, which is “Mediterranean.” She then examines the coherence of the “ideal types” delineated by researches according to the themes and literary devices utilised, based on two short stories from 2006, by writers one of whom is from the northern and the other – from the southern part of the country.

Following the proposal in Seiler and Heine, possession is defined in terms of relationship between two entities, called possessor and possessed. Linguistic possession can be of different types: permanent, physical, inalienable, abstract, etc. In Italian and Croatian, possession is expressed by adjectives, pronouns, and prepositional phrases. In Croatian, it can be expressed also by morphological cases. In Italian, possession is rendered with possessive adjectives and pronouns (mia sorella) and the complement of possessive specification (la sorella di Mira). In Croatian, it is expressed equally (moja sestra); with the dative of the personal pronouns (sestra mi); with the possessive adjectives (posvojni pridjev; Mirina sestra); with the double genitive (sestra mojega oca); with the complement of possessive specification in the substandard varieties (sestra od Mire). The contribution investigates the ways to express possession in Molise Croatian, a štokavo-ikavo variety in use in the linguistic island of the Croatian minority in Italy, in Molise, from a contact-linguistics and contrastive perspective. As at all linguistic levels, when indicating ownership, Molise Croatian has conservative, Croatian, and innovative uses and forms, derived from contact with Italian and the Abruzzo-Molisan variety. In Molise Croatian, one can express ownership by using possessive pronouns (posvojne zamjenice/pridjevi; moja sestra); the dative of personal pronouns (sestra mi); the possessive adjective (posvojni pridjev; sestra Mirina); the complement of possessive specification (sestra do Mire); the double genitive (sestra mojoga oca). The main objective of this corpus-based research is to analyse and describe the influence of Italian and of the Abruzzo-Molisan variety on the morphosyntax and the distribution of possessives in Molise Croatian.

The paper presents poetically and politically conditioned changes in the interpretationof the literature of the Croatian National Revival period as “Romantic”.It indicates that these phenomena should necessarily be viewed in mutual (inter)action. It states that the Croatian National Revival, as a period that is most frequently demarcated by the years 1835 and 1848–49 in the so-called general historiography, is a necessary framework for the periodisation and understanding of the history of Croatian literature too. This framework does not exclude the necessity of including the concept of Romanticism in the study of Croatian literature of this period, which was strongly influenced by Romantic trends. And consequently it is a stage in a longer period of manifestation of Romantic features in Croatian culture and literature of the 19th century.

The purpose of this paper is to study perceptions of India in three literary works, from the 20th and 21st century. The first part looks into the tenets of postcolonial theory and literary imagology as a possible methodological framework. Subsequently, premodern perceptions of India in the Croatian literary and cultural space are summarised. The central analysis focuses on the historical novelJaša Dalmatin (Jaša Dalmatin, Viceroy of Gujarat) by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, the travelogue U potrazi za staklenim gradom (In Search of the Glass City) by Željko Malnar and Borna Bebek, and the short story Indija (India) by Bekim Sejranović. The analysis demonstrates that each of these writings reconstructs premodern perceptions to some extent, but primarily introduces new perceptions that are linked to the specific social, cultural and ideological context in which these works were written. This indicates that literary perceptions are at the same time always acts of literary fiction as well as a socially and culturally construed production of meaning.

There is a large number of German loan-words in the Croatian language, especially in its dialects, due to intensive political, economic and cultural connections between speakers of Croatian and German. AlthoughGerman loan-words have been topic of previous separate studies, there is still neither systematic and comprehensive study that would capture that layer of loan-words in the historical texts, in literary language and in local idioms, nor the dictionary of German loan-words in the Croatian language. Our paper gives a short survey of previous research of German loan-words in the Croatian language taking into consideration the extralinguistic reality (the attitude towards that layer of loan-words) as well as its span and scientific quality. An attempt is made to set the direction for further research in that area.

Language imperialism and political correctnessIn the times of general globalization, in its part that considers languages, especially the so-called small languages, we can talk not only about an uncontrolled inroad of mainly English words into all walks of life within a society, but also about elements of linguistic imperialism. That imperialism has come about through technology, not by arms and blazing swords, as was mostly the case in history. In addition, the USA – the exporting country of the above mentioned language-imperialistic phenomena around the world, is considered to be the cradle of the much advocated political correctness, which should include basic human rights, one of which is undoubtedly the right to a proper name.It could be argued whether this right is always respected: I will show some examples of proper names of immigrants who had to/wanted to renounce their names in order to be Americanized (‘‘cooked in the American melting pot’’). Thus, the Croatian Krešo became Chris, Eva is spelled Eve on the other side of the pond (pronounced /I:v/), and in the global (American) news Michael Stich, a German, is pronounced /majkl stits/, and so on.I will also provide an example of political correctness which is not far from sheer stupidity.Political correctness itself changes with time, which will be illustrated by the Croatian example Ciganin – Rom (Gipsy – Roma(ny)).

The migrant crisis in Europe is one of the most challenging problems that European Union has faced since its very existence. By examining the process of acculturation of Middle Eastern migrants in Zagreb this paper will provide a basic insight in this cultural phenomenon. The possibilities of the successful integration lies within the religious identity of Islam as partially common both to migrants and Muslim population in Croatia. Another positive factor for the successful integration can be found in the history of Muslim population in Croatia whose rich tradition and integration in the Croatian society can been regarded as highly instructive. The main goal of the paper is to present the experience of the encounters that individuals from the Islamic Centre in Zagreb had with the Immigrants from Middle East through the qualitative methodology and the deep interview method. This research should provide better understanding of the importance of religious identity in the process of integration of Middle East migrants in the European society and guidelines for overcoming the risks of parallel societies. In addition the authors will present an overview of the problems that occur in education process in the context of religious identities, with an emphasis on Islam in Croatian educational system.

In the novel entitled The Better Half of Courage, Ivan Slamnig elaborates on two types of narrative namely, a traditional internal story derived from the poetics of realism and a postmodern frame story streaked with the elements of the jeans prose. In the article, culinary motifs presented in both narratives are taken into consideration in order to expose their function in Slamnig’s novel. The article also tries to answer the question whether the dietary code is subordinated to the both forms of discourse. The analysis of the culinary themes reveals a process of braking off with tradition in the so-called traditional narrative, and attempts of retaining tradition in the postmodern narrative. In consequence, an apparently traditional modern pilgrim, who does not respect the order of traditional rituals and remains cautious in his consumption behaviour, turns out to be condemned to painful results of his choices while a postmodern vagrant as an unfulfilled consumer-glutton keeps drawing from tradition as well as from the present day what provides him with various pleasures. Furthermore, the analysis of the culinary code of the novel allows the authoress to confirm a thesis on the presence of postmodern effects in the both “parts” of the novel.

Postmodern phenomena, such as consumerism, media development, twilight of grand narratives, transformation of the aesthetics of the text, expansion of popular culture or value system instability, which create a melancholic anxiety. Characteristics of postmodern melancholy language have been analyzed which is also the language of women’s depression. The theme, most often undertaken by poets, turned out to be the body and language.

Trying to interpret oneself and the other in the world, the traditional Man has established a real world and an otherworld. Specific herbal and animal attributes were ascribed to particular people who allegedly had the power to communicate between worldliness and transcendence. Also some human characteristics were linked with herbal and animal mediators. These attributes were folklorized as miraculous powers. Such supernatural beings from South Slavic traditional conceptionsof the world have been largely associated with the pre-Christian deities and their degradations, based on the observed real attributes of the vegetal and animal species. The interdisciplinary comparative way of treating South Slavic folklore real-unreal motifs through time and space in this article is its ethnological, animalistic and anthropological contribution.

The construction of a political community: Croatian political emigrants after 1945 as performative actorsThe article concerns Croatian political emigration in the period 1945–1990. The author describes the construction of a political community as a form of opposition to the communist regime in Yugoslavia. The aforementioned group – understood here as a performative actor – made an effort to deconstruct the new ideology and political doctrine and to create a new community. These activities manifested in various forms of organization. In this article special attention is given to Hrvatska revija magazine, which was published in 1951–1966 in Argentina. Its main objective was to make the public aware of the socio-political situation in Croatia and to change public opinion. Croatian intellectuals analyzed topics that were forbidden or censored in their homeland; in particular, they willingly referred to Bleiburg and the figure of Alojzije Stepinac, whose reinterpretation became the foundation of a new political community.

This paper discusses the competitiveness of the Croatian economy. In the theoretical chapters of the paper, secondary data sources are based on and collected by the desk research method. These chapters present the competitiveness of the Croatian economy and the concept of five competing forces according to Porte. For this purpose, scientific and professional literature and Internet sources were used. In addition to the secondary ones, the paper also presents the primary results of the research, which represent the answers of the respondents collected by the method of an online survey. Respondents were represented by employees of Croatian export companies, and their answers were processed by the method of descriptive statistical analysis. In this regard, the aim of the research in this paper is to rank the impact of Porter’s five forces on the competitiveness of Croatian export companies, which was conducted by statistical analysis of variance. The subject of this research, with secondary and primary data presented in this paper, is taken from the doctoral dissertation of the author of this paper.

The paper deals with the relationship between Antun Gustav Matoš and the most important people of the town’s cultural and political life at the turn of the 19th into 20th century. The relationship between Matoš and the town Đakovo is considered from two perspectives: the first being the perspective of Matoš, which is based on his two travel accounts and numerous writings about Đakovo, i.e. the Bishop of the Diocese of Đakovo, Josip Juraj Strossmayer; the second perspective is that of Đakovo-based writers and considers their attitudes towards Matoš, with a special regard to the Bishop Strossmayer. The relationship between Antun Gustav Matoš and the Bishop Strossmayer was complex, even though it was, seemingly paradoxical, one-sided. Strossmayer was in many, ways an extraordinarily important person for Matoš, who wrote many texts about Strossmayer, for Strossmayer however, Matoš was only one among many young Croatian writers who were asking him for help and wrote about him. Strossmayer refused to provide Matoš with patronage, therefore the aim of this paper is to establish the reasons behind that decision, and determine why Croatia’s most prominent patron could not, or refused to, acknowledge one of Croatia’s most important writers.

The article deals with the following aspects of activity of Julije Benešić during his stay in Warsaw from 1930 to 1938: teaching a Croatian language course at the University of Warsaw, contacts with Polish and Slavic scholars (mainly linguists), contacts with Polish writers and artists, the Yugoslavian Library and statements about translations and translators, Croatian grammar together with a Croatian‑Polish dictionary, popularisation of knowledge about the Panslavic activities of Juraj Križanić (1618–1683), statements about difficulties faced by Poles in learning and understanding Croatian and Serbian. The multi‑faceted activity of J. Benešić in Poland and his accompanying observations enrich our knowledge on the history of Slavic studies in the inter‑war period.

The purpose of this article is to show the function and frequency of Turkish loanwords in modern Croatian language based on a questionnaire survey. Respondents were diversified in age, gender nad origin. The subject of analysis were stylistically marked loanwords that have fallen victim to a puristic language policy pursued by the Croatian linguists in popular language guides, especially in the 1990s. As survey results show, these activities aimed at removing Turkish loanwords from Croatian languague proved to be ineffective. Most of these words are still being used by the Croats simultaneously with the native synonyms. Puristic view declared by some of the respondents does not affect the usage of the Turkish loanwords in unofficial situations.

Opis:
This paper deals with the noun-preposition [N PP] construction in Croatian and compares the construction to its counterparts in English and French. Noun – preposition relations are analyzed as grammatical relations which participate in the formation of the lexicon, i.e. as grammatical devices which are productively used as lexicalization patterns. Based on the corpus analysis, [N PP] constructions in Croatian are identified and contrasted to English and French data. Lexical status of multi-word units in Croatian is discussed, as well as the level of idiomaticity of these constructions as compared to English and French. Whereas French and Croatian employ a similar lexicalization pattern, English uses compounding. The lexicon – grammar continuum is thus observed from the perspective of syntactic structures participating in word-formation.

This work critically examines some epistemological problems of the institutionalized public knowledge of Serbian lingustics and the knowledge of the opposed groups of social and feminist linguists. It also provides attention to some relevant studies of feminine derivational sufixes in the Serbo-Croatian and Croatian language. Under consideration are some crucial methodological issues such as supporting a claim, reliability of evidence, presenting disagreement among sources, and research ethos. The research contributes to the fuller understanding of the problem of social femininatives and to enlarging the types of reference sources. It suggests the need of thorough diachronic and interdisciplinary research which would look at different centuries and show the correlation between macsculine and feminine sufixes, the chronological activisation and geographical distribution of social femininatives, their productivity, archaization and extinction, as well as the newest proposals.

The paper investigates the representation of oral literature in reading literary works of subject teaching by Croatian authors, which are prescribed by the Curriculum for primary school and which interfere with oral literature. Interferences were singled out on the basis of structure, theme and motives, characters, language game, homeland, oral literary forms, etc. It is realized that oral literature is quite represented, and that interferences mostly took place on the basis of homeland and patriotism, motives and oral literary forms. The research proved that the elements of oral literature are firmly and deeply inserted in the reading works of Croatian authors and that in no case should they be considered peripheral elements as was the case for a long time on the Croatian literary scene when oral literature was systematically neglected.

The focus on the structural and semantic role of time is one of the key features of modernist cinema in the period after the Second World War. Modernist filmmakers experiment with means of aesthetic expression, such as montage, mise-en-scène, camera work, which define the story time and consequently make time the subject of film story. Concert (1954) directed by Branko Belan initiates the modernist experiment with time in the Croatian feature film. Belan achieves a radical temporal discontinuity and the condensation of time thanks to extensive ellipses, expanded flashback, deep space composition, variable narrative perspective, variable position of the characters in the story and genre hybridity. In this way he specifies two dimensions of time – historical and personal. In Concert historical time does not always affect personal time that can be subjected to fate. By that means the director contests the communist belief in the positive impact of historical changes on the life of an individual.

Forgetting synonyms: on the “jokerization” of everyday languageThe democratization of social relations can bring about linguistic liberalization, where the effectiveness and speed of transmitting information are of utmost importance. Wherever possible, information is presented in a condensed form, as an icon or a gesture. When speaking, we increasingly rely on a limited vocabulary, using very polysemous and broad terms. Such terms undergo jokerization – they begin functioning as wild cards in a card game, being able to represent any other cards depending on the current needs. In addition to internationalisms, which appear as jokers as a matter of course (e.g. Polish super ‘great’ and ekstra ‘great’), native words may also be used as jokers. In this case, in addition to their core meaning, they develop a new joker meaning signaled by new formal features, such as loss of inflections (cf. Croatian mrak lit. ‘dark’, joker ‘great’; guba lit. ‘leprosy’, joker ‘great’). When used in this way, they may form new derivational chains, becoming, in a way, less universal and resisting analytic tendencies. By the same token, derivational morphemes may also acquire joker meanings (e.g. the Croatian naj-).Jokerization, which is based on replacing a synonym chain with a single all-encompassing word, does not prevent communication, but does impoverish it. It is an intermediate stage between verbal and non-verbal communication. This process, common in spoken language, is examined, and illustrations are drawn from computer blogs and forums.

Croatian speculative fiction in the last quarter of the century has been dominated by the city of Zagreb. There are three anthologies depicting the capital of Croatia and visions of its future: Zagreb 2004 (1995), Zagreb 2014 (1998) and Zagreb 2094 (2004). Also, in Croatian dystopian fiction, the popularity of which has grown rapidly since 2010, the city becomes a metaphor for the problem of exclusion and deep inequalities between the centre and the periphery. The changes in the literary image of Zagreb over the last twenty-five years illustrate not only the changing perception of an urban space and different ways of experiencing the city by writers, but also depict the evolution of speculative fiction in Croatia by distinguishing its most important elements: the growth of the importance of local motifs and places, as well as blurring the rigid genre boundaries and the evolution towards the so-called slipstream fiction. Thanks to the analysis of literary images of Zagreb, questions about the attitude of fantasy literature of that time towards the main contemporary issues can be raised. The article finally offers a possibility to define either the subversive or conciliatory character of fantasy works in the context of the most dominant ideologies of that time.

The article describes both the use of the past participles in the multiword units in Croatian and their status in contemporary Croatian dictionaries. What is described are the criteria for distinguishing the past participles as morphological forms of the verb headword from the lexicalised adjectives that should have the status of independent headwords in the dictionary.
