Opis:
Discrete cluster microforms, or simply clusters, in gravel streams result from organization of particles found in the surface layer of the gravel bed into disconnected patches. Clusters are the outcome of feedback interaction between flow, sediment and stream planform geometry. The complexity of this interaction results in several different cluster shapes, i.e. line, rhomboid and triangular. The objective of this research is to provide a quantitative characterization of cluster shape. To achieve this, we employed a novel method based on fractal theory and used for the shape description of clusters. Our novel method utilized the cell-counting method for the estimation of the areal fractal dimension, for two major datasets, namely fabricated clusters with well-defined shapes, and clusters developed in the laboratory. The principal finding of this research is that the proposed method successfully characterized cluster shape in quantitative terms. Specifically, it was shown that the new approach could identify clusters of different shapes 84% of the time, under different arrangements. This finding is of great importance for bed pattern recognition studies of stream reaches with superimposed roughness elements such as clusters. The findings of the current work could also assist numerical modellers in the development of more representative models of flows over roughness features such as clusters and in the interpretation of results from such models.

Opis:
Recently practical X-ray measurement systems are demanded energy distinction function. Photon-counting CdTe semiconductor detectors have a high energy resolution in a low count rate condition at room temperature. However, the energy resolution is decreased by pile-up phenomenon in a high count rate condition. In conventional signal processing, processing time estimated X-ray photon energy from the pulse waveform is about tens of microseconds. This time is depended on the pulse decay time. This paper purposes to maintain the high energy resolution by changing the signal-processing algorithm, which derived the pulse rise height of the output waveform from the CdTe detector in a high count rate condition. As a result, the pulse rise time required to estimate the pulse rise height was short about 100 ns at incident X-ray energy 60 keV. As the result of energy spectrum by using this data, the FWHM of about 11keV (at 60 keV) when the count rate of 500 kcps. This result shows the possibility that the photon counting sensor has application for the high count rate imaging without decrease of the high energy resolution.

Opis:
Processing of digital experimental data has become a key part of virtually every research project. As sensors get both more diverse and cheaper, the amount of information to be handled greatly increases as well. Especially fatigue failure modelling requires by its nature large numbers of samples to be processed, and visualised. The presented paper is based on analysis of load data gathered in flight on an unmanned aircraft. A few versions of an analysis program were developed and considered for the use case. Each implementation included ingesting the data files, creating transfer arrays and the “rain flow counting” algorithm. For the sake of the ease of use and functionality, the version based on Python programming language was selected for presentation. Short development iteration time of this approach allowed gaining new insights by tweaking parameters to better represent actual acquired data. Both the results and the software itself can be easily viewed in a web browser and run with modifications without the need to install any software locally. The developed software is meant as a demonstration of capabilities of open source computation tools dedicated to aerospace and mechanical engineering research, where they remain relatively unpopular.

Opis:
Complex numerals are numerals composed of two or more numeral roots, e.g., three hundred five. Complex numerals fall into two classes called additive (e.g., twenty-three = 20 + 3) and multiplicative (e.g., three hundred = 3 × 100). There are two possible approaches to capturing their structure. Analysis A (e.g., He 2015) says that complex numerals form a constituent that quantifies over entities denoted by the noun. Analysis B (e.g., Ionin and Matushansky 2018) says that each numeral independently combines with the expression denoting counted entities. This article investigates the morphology of complex numerals in a sample of 17 diverse languages to determine which of these analyses (if any) is more accurate. Our goal is to lay out the patterns and discuss how well they fit with these theories. Our preliminary conclusion is that both structures should be allowed based on the data in our sample, though structures adhering to Analysis A (the complex numeral is a constituent) seem to be more common than the other type.

Opis:
The fatigue is an important factor in aircraft operation. A correct estimation of structure fatigue life is crucial for user and payload safety. However, due to high amount of data gathered during a typical recording of load spectra for different types of flights, the overall results become prone to human error. The paper describes development of a software able to perform an automated, in-depth analysis of data recorded with onboard accelerometers. Using the Rainflow Cycle Counting method, it transforms received data points into a Markov matrix. The prepared array is then recalculated into a half-cycle matrix, which can be collapsed into scalar value of fatigue level using the Palmgren-Miner rule. The method was tested with loads recorded during a typical flight conducted according to the Polish NSTS-06 flight scenario and simulated camera mounting fixed to a multirotor.

Opis:
In the most general terms, tax evasion is a breach of tax law. Such a practice is characterised by the economic effect of tax burden elimination or reduction. This paper is aimed at adapting the fixed effects models that are applied in the non-life insurance ratemaking process to modelling tax abuses. The common characteristics of tax risk assessment and non-life insurance ratemaking include for both cases: the number of a given type of events is counted in the examined time period, the distribution of the amount levied as a tax liability for a single event is examined, with the distribution characterised by strong right-skewed asymmetry, and finally the expected amount levied as a tax liability on a single insured/entity is estimated based on these results. In the case of insurance ratemaking, the obtained expected value serves directly the purpose of estimating the insurance premium. In the area of tax risk, the obtained expected values serve the purpose of estimating the scale of abuses arising from the application of a given behaviour pattern.

Opis:
Activities of the main radionuclides from the 238U and 232Th series in the Uniejów geothermal water were determined by combining liquid scintillation counting with a/b separation and g-spectrometry methods. The 222Rn and 226Ra activities were measured after extraction of radon from 10 ml water samples to 10 ml of an Ultima Gold F scintillation cocktail directly in 22 ml scintillation vials. The samples were counted in a new generation portable liquid scintillation counter, Betascout, without separation of the phases over the period of 30 days after extraction. The average values of the specific activities were equal to 2.95 and 0.64 Bq/dm3 for 222Rn and 226Ra, respectively. The 210Po radionuclide before counting was preconcentrated from 1 dm3 water samples on hydrated manganese oxide and deposited on silver discs. The discs were immersed in 10 ml of the scintillator and their activity was measured also by the same method. The average 210Po concentration was 0.052 Bq/dm3. Activity of the remaining radionuclides was determined by g-spectrometry after their preconcentration on hydrated manganese oxides from 10 dm3 samples. The activities of two radium radionuclides, 224Ra and 226Ra, can be calculated from their basic gamma-lines, whereas 228Ra can be determined from its decay product - 228Ac, and were equal to 0.40, 0.65 and 0.58 Bq/dm3, respectively. The activities of 210Pb and 238U (234Th) were below the detection limit of the method equal to 0.03 Bq/dm3. Based upon the obtained results, it can be concluded that there are not any radiological restrictions for using this water as a heat source or for balneological purposes. However, it cannot be used as drinking water, because the calculated committed effective dose from its one year consumption exceeds the WHO recommended value of 0.1 mSv.

It presents their Proto-Indo-European, Proto-Germanic, Old Danish and present forms whilst providing additional information on their development and corresponding numerals in other European languages. It focuses primarily on the vigesimal counting system, whose traces can be found in Danish, and which is the source of some unique forms unseen in other languages. Therefore, special attention is paid to the numerals of the series 50-90. Though these appear to be unique and exotic, the article shows that they are not to be perceived as an anomaly but rather a different path of development within the language Moreover, a brief explanation of the origins of the vigesimal system in Danish is provided. Also, several units of measurement showing traces of the vigesimal, duodecimal and sexagesimal systems are discussed. Finally, language reforms aimed at changing the numeral forms will be shortly portrayed.

This article describes a method for people counting in public transportation. In this particular scenario, various body poses corresponding to holding handrails must be accounted for. Kinect sensor mounted vertically has been employed to acquire a database of images of 1-5 persons, with and without body poses of holding a handrail. An algorithm has been devised for robust people counting, consisting of multiple steps. The handrails are removed by substituting an average image of the handrails from the image with persons holding a handrail. The image is then processed in blocks in order to find potential local maxima, which are subsequently verified to find head candidates. Finally, non-head objects are filtered out, based on the ratio of pixels with similar and near-zero value, in the neighbourhood of the maxima. The method has an average accuracy of 91% and has proved to handle well the handrails in the depth maps.
