Opis:
The dissertation raises the question of how particular articles of the Creed were presented in three Polish Catholic catechisms of the 16th century, written (and published) in Polish language by: Benedykt Herbest (1531-1598), Marcin Białobrzeski (1530-1586), and Hieronim Powodowski (1543-1613). The catechisms were created as a response to their Protestant equivalents, written by Martin Luther, Zacharias Ursinus, Caspar Olevianus, John Calvin, and Martin Bucer. Analysis of differences and similarities in interpreting the meaning of the 12 articles of the Creed in the above-mentioned Polish Catholic catechisms shows that they have symbolic value, and that their meaning was differently interpreted by the Polish authors. In the catechisms written by Herbest, Białobrzeski and Powodowski, chapters relating to the Creed clearly and accessibly explained the truths of the Holy Scripture, facilitated understanding of the Bible and preparation for sacraments, showed how to build one’s relationship with God, helped to resolve doubts, and brought order into one’s faith. Doubtlessly, the catechisms became a valuable tool for clergy in their pastoral work and a support for priests administering sacraments. They also implemented the decisions of the Council of Trent concerning the main dogmas of Catholic faith.

In this study, I deal with the case of a most unusual nun, whose life mission was to spread the knowledge of the Holy Scriptures in vernacular language during the Counter Reformation period. She was born in Catalonia (Spain) in 1551 and she spent all her life in a Dominican monastery in Barcelona, where she died in 1624. As it is well known, the Index librorum prohibitorum did not allow the reading of the Bible except for the Latin version of Saint Jerome. Despite this prohibition, she wrote more than twenty treatises. In them, she constructed a discourse about the Bible, and its spiritual and moral contents. Her method of teaching and living Christianity, based on the direct contact with the sources of Catholic faith, as well as on Pauline thinking, made her one of the most outstanding cases of biblical Humanism of the Golden Age. However, until now, she remains almost unknown

Opis:
The subjects of the article are genesis and history of the Reformation in the writings of Piotr Skarga, most fully shown in his polemics with Hieronim Moskorzowski, specifically in the first “Abashment of the Arians” (1604). An argument with Arian writer is crucial for mentioned issues, because the Royal Preacher derived all factions of the Reformation from one ancestor — Arius. Skarga was relying his historical narration on the marks of the True Church (“via notarum”). He was convincing that not having any of those marks had direct influence on shaping and existence of the Reformation. An author in his writings therefore was undertaking an issue of history of the heterodox communities, with intention to present it in the specific historiosophical perspective.

Opis:
The article aims at showing in a new light the confessional situation of the University of Cracow in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, using sources omitted in previous research into the topic and thanks to a more detailed analysis of the sources used by other scholars (e.g., Acta rectoralia, university conclusions, rectors’ and professors’ diaries). The Academy of Cracow (as it was called then) was a Catholic institution, thus portraying the attitude of the university’s authorities to non-Catholics in a period of confessional struggle in Cracow and in the Commonwealth seemed promising. Another point was to analyse the possibilities for non-Catholics to function within the walls of the University in different periods of time, as well as to describe the most important events and regulations, which influenced the University’s policy. The author also tried to bring to light the subsequent stages of administrative exclusion (on various levels) of non-Catholic students. However, the contacts of the Academy with religious minorities in Cracow is a matter so complex, that it remained beyond the scope of the article.

Opis:
The article presents ways of using motives related to family matters in Old Polish documents written by catholic and Protestant polemicists in both metaphorical and reality oriented content. As the analysed materials shows it was a common practice to use family related motives in religious polemics and to describe real or fictitious pathological phenomena. However, there is no a positive vision of marriage and family in the discussed polemic works. Recalling phenomena unacceptable for the society of that period was aimed at creating a proper image of a religious opponent. However, it led to significant simplification of theological argumentation.

Opis:
The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 61 (2013), issue 2. The article addresses the question of the fall of the Latin parish in Chorupnik that belonged to the former diocese of Chełm. The parish church in Chorupnik was taken over by Protestants in the second half of the 16th century. Unsuccessful attempts at recovering its property were made by incorporating it into the neighbouring parish in Gorzków. The actions taken by the Gorzków parish priest and the bishop together with his chapter failed, too. A detailed study of such attempts to recover the property of one of the parishes that ceased to exist during the Reformation falls within the context of the relations between the nobility and the clergy in the period of Counter-Reformation. Studying the social, legal and economic relations in a local dimension is important for understanding the mechanisms of the mass transition of the nobility to reformed denominations, and then of their return to the Catholic Church.

The paper thus aims to answer the question whether designations for religious dissenters used by Jakub Wujek reflect the actual multiplicity of reformed confessions existing at the time. The material has been excerpted from the first edition of Iudicium available from the Lower Silesian Digital Library. Jakub Wujek’s Iudicium employs 16 various appellations of followers associated with the Reformation movement. Taking into account lexical doublets, such as luteran and luteryjan, witemberczanin and witemberczyk, zwinglijan and zwinglijanin as well as more comprehensive terms such as heretyk, kacerz, nowowiernik, odszczepieniec and sektarz, the catalogue of names increases to 25 items.

Opis:
The subject matter of this article is the episode of Skarga’s creations, concerning the argument with a protestant writer and publisher, Daniel Cramer. The conflict referred to the speech made by the Jesuit, just before the war expedition of King Sigismund III Vasa which started in Inflants. The essence of the speech was subsequently translated into German by an anonymous translator, a witness of this event. Furthermore, it was published as a maligning source against the king’s preacher. As a response, Skarga had created his own written version of the speech, in such a form in which it was originally meant to be spoken. Afterwards he compared it to the German-language translation. By juxtaposing those two texts, he wanted to show in what way the opponents, in his opinion, manipulated the written forms of the facts. In addition, his objective was to restore the basic philological processes, which was conducted during the modification of his speech.

Opis:
The article presents a report on the relations between the three main religious groups of Gdańsk: Lutherans, Catholics and Calvinists in the period of the first three centuries after the proclamation of Martin Luther’s theses in Wittenberg (1517). The report includesthe periods of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (until 1793), Napoleonic epoch (1807-1814) and first years of the Prussian partition (until 1817). At that time the Lutherans were the dominant religious group in Gdańsk, but they failed to take the total control of the city. The Catholics lost their precedence soon after the Reformation, but they increased their number until the beginning of the 19th century and strengthened social and cultural influences at that time. The Calvinists were the biggest losers in that confrontation, because they didnot manage to dominate the city (at the turn of 16th and 17th centuries), lost believers and finally were subordinated to the Lutherans within the Evangelical Union (1817). The religions under discussion sometimes formed alliances, but it was not always the alliance between both groups of Protestants. Especially during the expansion of Calvinism in the city, the Lutherans looked for help from the Catholics and sometimes the latter provided them a real support.

The Warsaw Confederation, Piotr Skarga, Counter-Reformation, confessional hate
Opis:
The Warsaw Confederation, Piotr Skarga SJ, and Hate Speech The discourse involving the feeling of hate is understood here rather as a soft than a hard “discourse of hate”. The Warsaw Confederation called “a jewel of a free conscience” was hated (more or less) by the contemporary elite of the Church. The subjects of analysis in this paper are two booklets by Piotr Skarga (Upominanie do ewanjelików i do wszystkich społem niekatolików iż o skażenie zborów krakowskich gniewać się i nic nowego i burzliwego zaczynać nie mają [An Admonition to Protestants and to all other non-Catholics], Kraków 1591; Dyskurs na konfederacyją – [A Discourse on Confederation], Kraków 1607) and Protestant responses to them. The fundamental question is: can “the discourse of hatred”, i.e. “a concept of multiple meanings (...), involved in political and philosophical disputes, so typical for the beginning of the 21st century”, be used as a way of analysing and interpretating texts written 400 years ago? Such an indisputable argument as the title of the book by Wacław Sobieski published already 100 years ago: Nienawiść wyznaniowa tłumów za rządów Zygmunta III-go [The religious hate of crowds during the reign of Sigismund III] supports an affirmative answer to it. In a kind of “hierarchy of beliefs” in Skarga’s argument Protestants are ascribed to the lowest and exceptionally godless place and described by comparisons: 1. with adulterers, thieves and parricides (Protestants are equal to them) and 2. with pagans and Jews (Protestants are perhaps even worse than them). Th e purpose of such an argumentation is severe condemnation of the Protestant godlessness since the Catholic love towards God evokes hate towards people who – like Protestants – turned away from Him. So, on the one hand, Skarga admits that Protestants are still Christians, but on the other, he claims there is no God outside his, i.e. Catholic, church.
