We are interested in the finite element approximation of Coulomb's frictional unilateral contact problem in linear elasticity. Using a mixed finite element method and an appropriate regularization, it becomes possible to prove existence and uniqueness when the friction coefficient is less than C varepsilon2 |log(h)|{-1}, where h and varepsilon denote the discretization and regularization parameters, respectively. This bound converging very slowly towards 0 when h decreases (in comparison with the already known results of the non-regularized case) suggests a minor dependence of the mesh size on the uniqueness conditions, at least for practical engineering computations. Then we study the solutions of a simple finite element example in the non-regularized case. It can be shown that one, multiple or an infinity of solutions may occur and that, for a given loading, the number of solutions may eventually decrease when the friction coefficient increases.

Opis:
The present work addresses the problem of determining under what conditions the impending slip state or the steady sliding of a linear elastic orthotropic layer or half space with respect to a rigid flat obstacle is dynamically unstable. In other words, we search the conditions for the occurrence of smooth exponentially growing dynamic solutions with perturbed initial conditions arbitrarily close to the steady sliding state, taking the system away from the equilibrium state or the steady sliding state. Previously authors have shown that a linear elastic isotropic half space compressed against and sliding with respect to a rigid flat surface may get unstable by flutter when the coefficient of friction μ and Poisson's ratio ν are sufficiently large. In the isotropic case they have been able to derive closed form analytic expressions for the exponentially growing unstable solutions as well as for the borders of the stability regions in the space of parameters, because in the isotropic case there are only two dimensionless parameters (μ and ν). Already for the simplest version of orthotropy (an orthotropic transversally isotropic material) there are seven governing parameters (μ, five independent material constants and the orientation of the principal directions of orthotropy) and the expressions become very lengthy and literally impossible to manipulate manually. The orthotropic case addressed here is impossible to solve with simple closed form expressions, and therefore the use of computer algebra software is required, the main commands being indicated in the text.

We consider a mathematical model which describes the flow of a Bingham fluid with friction. We assume a stationary flow and we model the contact with damped response and a local version of Coulomb's law of friction.The problem leads to a quasi-variational inequality for the velocity field. We establish the existence of a weak solution and, under additional assumptions, its uniqueness. The proofs are based on a new result obtained in (Motreanu and Sofonea, 1999). We also establish the continuous dependence of the solution with respect to the contact conditions.

This paper is concerned with the frictional contact between beams. The purpose is to compare the results obtained by the penalty and Lagrange multiplier methods. The advantages and disadvantages of both methods are generally known and widely discussed but not in the quantitative manner and not specifically for the problem of beam-to-beam contact. The paper sketches briefly both formulations pointing out the main differences and features of both methods. The section with examples presents several cases of analysed beam-to-beam contact scenarios. The accuracy of results is taken into account, also the comparison to the full 3D analysis performed using the program ABAQUS is made. The computation times and the length of the codes for both methods are compared as well. These criteria allow one to conclude that for the beam-to-beam contact problem the Lagrange multiplier method is more attractive than the penalty method.
Artykuł dotyczy kontaktu z tarciem między belkami. Jego celem jest porównanie wyników obliczeń uzyskanych metodami współczynnika kary i mnożników Lagrange'a. Zalety i wady obu tych metod są ogólnie znane i dyskutowane w literaturze, brakuje jednak ich porównania ilościowego dla przypadku kontaktu między belkami. W artykule krótko przedstawiono oba sformułowania i wskazano na podstawowe różnice między nimi. Przedstawiono wyniki obliczeń dla kilku przykładów kontaktujących się belek. Wzięto pod uwagę dokładność obliczeń, wyniki porównano z pełną analizą trójwymiarową wykonaną za pomocą programu ABAQUS. Porównano także długość kodu i czas obliczeń. Te kryteria pozwoliły stwierdzić, że w przypadku kontaktu między belkami metoda mnożników Lagrange’a jest bardziej atrakcyjna niż metoda współczynnika kary.

Opis:
A class of smooth approximations of the total friction force occurring on a plane finite contact surface is presented. It is assumed that the classical Coulomb friction law is valid on any infinitesimal element of the contact region. The models describe the stick phase, the fully developed sliding and the transition between these two modes. They take into account different values of static and dynamic friction coefficients. The models are applied in simulation of a dynamical system performing translational and rotational stick-slip oscillations, and then they are verified by comparison with the corresponding results in which an event-driven discontinuous model of friction is used.

Opis:
A plane problem of frictional contact interaction between two elastic isotropic half planes one of which possesses a single shallow recess (depression) is examined in the case of successive application of remote constant normal and shear forces. The loads steps (compression, and next monotonically increasing shear loads) lead to the main contact problem with an unknown stick-slip boundary determined by the Amonton-Coulomb law. It is reduced to a Cauchy-type singular integral equation for the tangential displacement jump in the unknown sliding region. Its size is derived from an additional condition of finiteness of shear stresses at the edges of the slip zone. Considerations are carried out for some general shape of the recess. Analytical results with the characterization of the considered contact are given and illustrated for the certain form of the initial recess.
