Opis:
Some scraps of Coptic literary texts (parchment and papyrus) have been excavated at Deir el-Bahari in 2008/2009. Identified as biblical passages, they are published here and offer the opportunity to return to the question of the existence and contents of the library of the monastery of Saint-Phoibammon: firstly, to what extent can these fragments be considered as remains of such a library? Then, since the publication of Włodzimierz Godlewski’s monograph on this monastery, are there other clues that make new hypotheses possible?

Opis:
The article explores the meaning of the presence of evidently reused objects in the hermitage installed in the Theban tomb MMA 1152. These objects could not have been deposited there accidentally, because the hermitage is off the beaten track and at fairly elevated height, hence anything ‘dropped’ inside it must have been brought there on purpose. There is much to say that the monks collected these objects with some practical purpose in mind. Examples discussed in the article sound a cautionary note: not every object found on an archaeological site can be considered as originating from it and used there originally. Things could have been adapted and even transferred from other places. Such observations of apparently secondary importance can fill out significantly the picture of everyday life of the resident(s) of the hermitage and draw a picture of a devout monk who was at the same time both thrifty and inventive.

Coptic – Greek comparison
Proto-Isaia in Coptic-Sahidic dialect
Opis:
In this article I attempt to analyze a Coptic manuscript sa 52 (according tothe nomenclature of K. Schüssler), from the collection of Pierpont Morgan Library. In this parchment codex we have almost the entire text of the Book of Isaiah in the Sahidic dialect of the Coptic language. The first part of this book is particularly important: the so-called Proto–Isaiah. Onethird of the text of Proto–Isaiah in Sahidic can be found only in our manuscript sa 52!The presentation and analysis of the codex sa 52 is divided in several parts. Thefirst part contains a short history of our manuscript against the background of the whole Pierpont Morgan collection. In the second part there are some technical informations about our codex (its form, measurements, shape of the letters, manner of writing, etc.). The third part is dedicated to the Coptic text itself and its comparison with the Greek text of the Septuagint (according to the edition of J. Ziegler). In the last part – based on several examples – we try to answer the following question: how the Coptic text of sa 52 helps us in our interpretation of the Greek text of Proto–Isaia, especially when the text of Septuagint is difficult and unclear.

The present article suggests a hypothetical localization and provides a reconstructed text of a Coptic inscription which was seen by Urbain Bouriant on the road along the east bank of the Nile, halfway between Assuan and Kom Ombo. Bouriant edited this inscription twice in the 1890s, presenting it, together with an Arabic inscription that lay underneath, as a bilingual report on roadwork, and dated it to year 409 of Diocletian, resp. 7[3] Higˇri, i.e., AD 693. This article argues that, on the contrary, the two inscriptions are of different and much later date, and commemorate two distinct (albeit similar) events.

The main sources of the Holy Scripture text are, obviously, the biblical manuscripts; though they are not the only ones. We can also find the biblical text among writings of fathers of the Church, in which there are very often many biblical quotations. This article, as the title suggests, presents the Coptic verses of Psalms which can be found in one of the homilies of Abba Shenute: Ad philosophum gentilem. Firstly it contains a short biography of Shenute: his writing activity, and especially the diverse information regarding his homily. Secondly it includes 13 quotations from the Psalms - part of this homily – with their counterparts from the different biblical manuscripts which we have today at our disposal. The comparison between the appropriate Coptic verses of Psalms reveals a great similarity between the quotations of Shenute’s homily and other biblical manuscripts. The small differences are explained below each quotation. Abba Shenute assures us that in his time the Book of Psalms was well known in the Coptic environment.

The Coptic Orthodox Church relates the mystery of trinity unity not only to science about the Church but also to perception of matrimony. The matrimony is for Copts one of seven sacraments. People were appointed to live in image and likeness of the Holy Trinity and will of God is, so as they, with exception of special cases, do not live in loneliness but in family. Like God gave first family his blessing and said to Adam and Eve to be fertile and have increase (Gen 1,28), so the Coptic Church gives its blessing relationship of man and woman. The matrimony is not for Orthodoxy only a state of nature but also a state of grace. Life in marriage, like monastic life is a vocation, requiring specific gift or charisma of the Holy Spirit and just this gift is being given in the sacrament of matrimony.

Despite its existence for almost a millennium, virtually nothing is known about its history, culture and administration. Focusing on the Gezira between the White and Blue Nile and the eastern shores of the latter, this article considers archaeology, medieval geographers and especially accounts from the 18th through the early 20th centuries to discuss towns and churches, Christianity and the impact of Alwa’s legendary capital Soba on the memory of the Sudanese people. The author hopes to provide a useful introduction, inspiring further research on this enigmatic kingdom.

On 18 September 2015, during the International Congress of Coptic Studies in Rome, Professor Karen L. King from Harvard Divinity School, presented a previously unpublished Coptic papyrus fragment, known as the Gospel of Jesus’ Wife. This text was among the scraps of ancient manuscripts, one of which is known as the Harvard Lycopolitan John and contains small fragments from the Gospel of John. In my article I attempt to analyze this second manuscript and demonstrate, on the basis of various scientific examinations performed by contemporary scholars, that the aforementioned Gospel of Jesus’ Wife, and also the Harvard Lycopolitan John, are modern creations. Unknown origin of the HLJ, unusual dimensions of the manuscript, dialectal implausibility, linguistic errors, etc. – all these phenomena allow us to treat the Harvard Lycopolitan John as a forgery, which was faithfully copied from Herbert Thompson’s 1924 edition of the fourth-century Lycopolitan “Qau codex”.

This paper offers corrections and new readings to names found in eleven inscriptions originating from Faras. Inscriptions were discovered at different periods, ranging from the visit of Karl Richard Lepsius in 1844 to the rescue excavation by the Polish archaeological mission of Kazimierz Michałowski in 1961–1964. The material covers different types of sources (epitaphs, visitors’ inscriptions, subscriptions, and an owner’s inscription) in three languages (Greek, Coptic, and Old Nubian) and spans roughly the whole Christian period in Nubia, from the seventh to the fourteenth or even fifteenth centuries. The corrections include both ‘cosmetic’ improvements in reading (e.g. from the form ⲁⲛⲁⲛⲉ to ⲁⲛⲁⲛⲏ) as well as identification of ghost-names (e.g. the highly unusual name Theoria, which is in fact a misreading of Theophil).

Reusage was a common phenomenon in the ancient world. Throughout the history of Egypt, from the very early beginnings until modern times, tombs, temples, quarries or loose architectural elements were adapted for new purposes. The Temple of Hatshepsut in Deir el-Bahari (Upper Egypt) was no exception. Our knowledge about the Graeco-Roman to Late Antique periods comes mainly from the movable artefacts such as ostraka, papyri and secondary epigraphy preserved on the walls. In 2018, an attempt was made to recapture the faint, but still noticeable, drawings and texts left there by monks and Christian visitors. Contrary to previous studies, a more contextual approach was applied in the course of this re-examination.

The emphasis was on such elements of professional knowledge which – due to the specifi city of the cultural circle of Egyptian Christians – are gaining, in this case, a higher importance than in relation to teachers of congressional languages (e.g. religious-historical aspect of teacher’s general knowledge). The point of departure for theoretical considerations constituted the didactic experience of the author as well as the results of the questionnaire research performed among students of UPJPII, who were learning the Coptic language in years 2009–2014.

The paper contains an introduction and translation of the oldest preserved MS of the Miracles of St. Menas. The collection has 17 miracles but, since the codex is heavily deteriorated, not all of them could have been edited. The last miracles in the collection are of the special interest as they are unattested in any other Coptic MS, the 17th miracle being absent even in the Greek collections. The translation puts together three separately edited parts of the text and for the first time presents them together;

Texts on the martyrdom of St Claudius and on his cult center at Pohe in the Lycopolitan nome were published in 1970 but were never studied exhaustively. This interesting Coptic hagiographic dossier, preserved in its entirety in a codex from the early 9th century (also in smaller fragments from the same period), was put together specifically for the purpose of the cult. Two panegyrics written by Constantine, Bishop of Lycopolis, ordained by the patriarch Damianos (578–607) and his curate in Upper Egypt, are of particular interest as a literary product and at the same time testimony of a pilgrimage center in operation. Two other anonymous texts from the same codex (Pierpont Morgan 587, 9th century), which are both much later, supply historians with useful data on Christian beliefs during the Great Persecution.

Opis:
In this paper, three Coptic ostraca, which all most probably originate in the Theban area, are edited. The texts are all epistolary in nature. It is probable that all three stem from a monastic environment; ostensibly no. 1 relates to the Epiphanius Monastery, while no. 2 comes from the dossier belonging to the Monastery of Phoibammon. The latter piece concerns an argument about the appointment of a shepherd, thus providing another witness to the economic activities of the mentioned institution. No. 3 concerns a delivery of an unnamed commodity kept in sacks.

Opis:
This article is the first in a series that aims to publish all the Coptic ostraca discovered by Tomasz Górecki during his excavations in the hermitage MMA 1152 (Western Thebes) between 2003 and 2013. Here, I am presenting the edition of private letters. There are altogether sixty-eight such texts, of which eleven have been published elsewhere and fifty-seven are edited here. Even though many of them are very fragmentary, one can recognize various topics common to the letters of this region in the seventh–eighth centuries. They also testify to the relations that existed between the hermitage and the neighbouring sites of the Theban region.
