Opis:
Zooplankton is an important bioindicator of ecosystem functioning. Knowledge of the seasonal fluctuation in the zooplankton population in estuarine waters of the Indian Sundarbans is rather limited. In the present study, we analysed the community structure of zooplankton assemblages and their spatio-temporal variations based on different multivariate statistics and indicator value analysis. A total of 56 taxa were identified and the density was primarily dominated by planktonic copepods and few meroplankton communities during four sampling seasons. The most abundant species were: Acartia spinicauda, Acartia sp., Bestiolina similis, Euterpina acutifrons, Labidocera acuta, Paracalanus aculeatus, Paracalanus parvus and Paracalanus indicus. Canonical Correspondence Analysis highlighted that temperature, pH, DO, salinity and nutrients were the prevailing environmental parameters associated with significant spatio-temporal changes of zooplankton distribution in this area. The highest abundance of zooplankton was recorded in winter, followed by monsoon, summer and spring. Throughout the study period, different zooplankton indices were observed in good condition. Seasonal occurrence of dominant zooplankton with high IndVal index was markedly observed and it might be used as a potential bioindicator for a particular season and environmental condition in this estuarine complex. The results of this study provide evidence for the presence of warm water species in the estuarine waters of the Indian Sundarbans and can be a clear indication of climate change-mediated elevated temperature in the estuarine system. Our results underscore the high diversity of zooplankton from mangrove dominated estuarine complex and emphasize the need for long-term monitoring in ecologically fragile ecosystems like the Sundarbans Estuarine System.

Opis:
This study was carried-out to investigate the abundance and diversity of zooplankton in River Shasha, Southwest Nigeria. The zooplankton community constitutes an important component in the faunal composition of the water body. Samples were collected bi-monthly between February 2006 to February 2008, with a mind of capturing various seasons in the period of study, at two sampling stations (Ipetumodu and Edun-abon) established along River Shasha. A total number of 54 zooplankton species were identified, comprising of five classes, namely Rotifera (29 species), Ostracoda (8 species), Arthropoda (5 species), Copepoda (5 species), Protozoa (4 species) and Cladocera (3 species). The most abundant species were Brachionus, Lecane and Keratella recorded the highest distribution among the zooplankton observed during the sampling period. Among the Rotifers, Branchions patulus and Filina opoliensis were found abundant. Holopedium amazonicum and Scapholebris armata were predominant among the Cladoceras. Among the Copepods the dominant species was Ectocyclops phaleratus and Hemicypris ovate and Cypris subglobosa among Ostracoda. Among the Protozoa, Diffugia sp and Vorticella sp were observed. Ceratopogonid sp. was most dominant among Arthropoda. The density of zooplankton population was maximum during dry season (158702 Org/L) and minimum (12402 Org/L) during rainy season due to the different environmental conditions of the water bodies. The overall mean abundance of zooplankton population was in the following order: Rotifera > Protozoan > Arthropoda > Copepoda > Cladocera >Ostracoda. The few species of Zooplankton identified in River Shasha may reflect the moderate level of limit nutrient and there is need for regular monitoring of the waterbody to avoid the excess input of nutrients from domestic and agricultural waste that could lead to eutrophication.

Opis:
The relationships between the small cyclopoid copepod Oithona and hydrological factors, phytoplankton and ichthyoplankton were evaluated using the data obtained in the central South China Sea (SCS) in summer 2014. The genus abundance ranged from 6.00 ind. m3 to 93.75 ind. m3 with high abundance band occurring in the branch of SCS Monsoon Jet. The lower temperature and higher salinity in the surface water of the band than other zones indicated that deep water intrusion was a positive factor for aggregation of the genus. The community structure of the genus was dominated by Oithona plumifera and Oithona similis made up 97% of the genus abundance associated with Oithona tenuis. The result of db-RDA analysis showed that the community structure of the genus was affected by temperature, Chl a, larval fishes and fish spawns, and temperature was the most important limiting factor. The result of GAMs analysis showed that abundance of O. tenuis, and copepodites were affected by Chl a, larval fishes and fish spawns; abundance of O. similis was affected by Chl a and fish spawns; and abundance of O. plumifera was affected by Chl a and larval fishes. Therefore, we suggest that the branch of SCS Monsoon Jet and deep water intrusion favor aggregation of plankton in the central SCS in summer. We confirm that the temperature is the limiting factor to the reproduction of the genus Oithona in tropic seas and the genus Oithona is a food-web linker between primary production and larval fishes in the central SCS.

Opis:
There are remarkably few direct fossil records of Copepoda, which implies that current estimates of the lineage divergence times and inferences on the historical biogeography remain highly dubious for these small-sized crustaceans. The Cyclopidae, a predominantly freshwater copepod family with 1000+ species and distributed worldwide, has no fossil record at all. Recent collections from the middle Miocene Barstow Formation in Southern California resulted in ample material of finely preserved cyclopid fossils, including both adult and larval stages. To document the antennulary setation pattern in the adult and copepodid instars we used a coding system that is coherent between sexes and developmental stages. The majority of the cyclopid fossils, coming from saline lake environment, represent the modern genus Apocyclops, a euryhaline, thermophilic group occurring both in the New World and Old World. A new species Apocyclops californicus is described, based on the short medial spine and spiny ornamentation of the free segment of leg 5, spinule ornamentation of pediger 5, and well-developed protuberances of the intercoxal sclerite of leg 4. The presence of antennal allobasis and the features of the swimming legs unambiguously place the Miocene Apocyclops in the A. panamensis- clade, a predominantly amphi-Pacific group. The middle Miocene fossils with clear affinities to a subgroup of Apocyclops imply an early Miocene or Paleogene origin of the genus. Based on the geographic patterns of the species richness and morphology in Apocyclops and its presumed closest relative, genus Metacyclops, we hypothesize that: (i) the ancestor of Apocyclops, similar in morphology to some cave-dweller Metacyclops occurring today in the peri-Mediterranean region, might have arrived in North America from Europe via the Thulean North Atlantic bridge in the late Paleocene–early Eocene; (ii) Eocene termination of the Thulean land connection might have resulted in the divergence of Apocyclops from the Metacyclops stock.

Opis:
The ultrastructure and molecular phylogeny of a new microsporidium Mrazekia macrocyclopis sp.n., a parasite of the copepod Macrocyclops albidus (Jur.) in North-West of Russia are described. All stages of its life cycle are diplokaryotic. Fresh spores are rod-shaped and 7.3–10.5 × 1.6–2.3 μm in size. Spore ultrastructure is typical of Mrazekia. The polar tube consists of the anterior clavate manubrium followed by a thin filament arranged in 3.5–4.5 nearly vertical coils. Spores are enclosed in individual sporophorous vesicles. SSU rDNA sequence analysis showed attribution of the new species to a cluster of microsporidia infecting insects (Cystosporogenes, Endoreticulatus), microsrustaceans (Glugoides), vertebrates (Vittaforma) and ciliates (Euplotespora) nested within the clade IV sensu Vossbrinck, Debrunner- Vossbrinck (2005). Mrazekia macrocyclopis is not therefore closely related to Bacillidium vesiculoformis, another microsporidium with rod-shaped spores, and the polyphyletic nature of the family of Mrazekiidae is obvious.

Introduction. Eel is one of the most valuable commercial fish species of the Vistula Lagoon. For this reason its infection by non-indigenous species of parasites is the subject of the interest of sciencists. Material and methods. A total of 90 eel specimens caught in the Polish part of the Vistula Lagoon were examined over the period of May-August 2005. The fish were subjected to standard procedures of parasitological examination and parasite identification. The fish were divided into two length classes: smaller and larger than 50 cm. To assess the effects of parasites on fish condition, the Fulton coefficient, expressed with the formula: WF = G · L⁻³ x 100, was calculated. Results. The fish were found to be hosts to 17 parasite taxa. The Ciliophora were represented by Trichodinella epizootica (Raabe, 1950); the Myxozoa by Myxidium giardi Cépede, 1906; the Digenea by Bunodera luciopercae (Müller, 1784), Deropristis inflata (Molin, 1859), Diplostomum spp., and Ichthyocotylurus platycephalus (Creplin, 1852); the Cestoda by Bothriocephalus claviceps (Goeze, 1782), Proteocephalus macrocephalus (Creplin, 1815), and Proteocephalus sp.; the Nematoda by Anguillicola crassus Kuwahara, Niimi et Itagaki, 1974, Camallanus lacustris (Zoega, 1776), C. truncatus (Rudolphi, 1814), and Hysterothylacium aduncum (Rudolphi, 1802); the Acanthocephala by Acanthocephalus lucii (Müller, 1776) and Corynosoma strumosum (Rudolphi, 1802); the Hirudinea by Piscicola geometra (Linnaeus, 1761); and the Copepoda by Ergasilus sieboldi Nordmann, 1832. All fishes were infected, and the mean intensity of all parasites was 4.8 inds. The nematode Anguillicola crassus was the most frequent parasite (67.8%, 4.2 inds), represented by all developmental stages, but mostly by adult specimens. The fish condition coefficient was somewhat higher in the eel larger than 50 cm (0.1746) than in those smaller than 50 cm (0.1734); in addition, only Anguillicola crassus-free fish showed a higher condition coefficient (0.1861), compared to the infected specimens (0.1715).
