Opis:
The aim of this paper is to develop a container ship traffic model for port simulation studies. Such a model is essential for terminal design analyses and testing the performance of optimization algorithms. This kind of studies requires accurate information about the ship stream to build test scenarios and benchmark instances. A statistical model of ship traffic is developed on the basis of container ship arrivals in eight world ports. The model provides three parameters of the arriving ships: ship size, arrival time and service time. The stream of ships is divided into classes according to vessel sizes. For each class, service time distributions and mixes of return time distributions are provided. A model of aperiodic arrivals is also proposed. Moreover, the results achieved are used to compare port specific features.

Opis:
Recently, technological advancements, globalization, ongoing mergers and acquisitions, and intense competition have dominated the container shipping industry. This situation has led to the formation of major container shipping lines with similar technologies, offering the same service. In such an environment, a strategic competitive advantage is no longer entirely dependent on the basic features of the service provided and customer relationships, which is more difficult to replicate, has gained importance. Container shipping lines must develop customer-centric relationship marketing strategies that cover the whole organization and marketing activities to survive, and maintain their profitability, in the current competitive environment of the industry. However, these strategies and their implementation are not precisely defined in the container shipping industry. Therefore, this study explores the relationship marketing strategies that are practiced in the container shipping industry. Data is collected via 22 semi-structured interviews with container shipping partners (i.e. container shipping lines and freight forwarders). Loyalty programs and relationship pricing are the most often mentioned relationship marketing strategies that foster customer loyalty in these interviews.

The manuscript is focused on the design of methodical procedure to locate container reloading station of national importance in the examined country. Slovakia represents the investigated country where ten container reloading stations , specialized above all in transshipment of loading units, are currently in operation. The introductory parts of the manuscript outline the most important concepts associated with the very term of intermodal transport, container reloading stations in the given country as well as a brief literature review in a given context. The following parts discuss the specification of relevant data and methods for this study as well as a description of the general procedure of multi-criteria evaluation of alternatives; namely consisting of, identifying a set of alternatives (Slovak regions), establishing a set of criteria and determining the weights of such criteria. The last part of the manuscript addresses forming a criteria matrix and subsequent calculations in order to search for the most suitable region when applying particular techniques of Operations Research. Specifically, the weights of criteria being determined based on the Saaty quantitative pairwise comparison method, and the final procedure in the context of selecting the most suitable alternative is suggested by using the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (also called as the TOPSIS method).

Opis:
Maritime container traffic has been the fastest-growing part of the world transport market for years. Building global supply chains requires the involvement of many actors, both operating within the area of maritime transport as well as hinterlands. Seaports are the focal points of all parties engaged in the transport process, determining their effectiveness. For this reason, dedicated intelligent systems are increasingly used in container terminals to improve their capacity and performance. ITS solutions for seaports should therefore be defined as a four-layer model - port sector, seaport, terminal and cargo/mean level. Obviously, these complex systems need to work together to generate significant synergy effects. For this purpose, it is necessary to use modern technology for identification (RFID, OCR, X-ray), transfer, communication, processing and data sharing. Of importance is that container terminals are also equipped with fully automated transport (AGV) and lifting (ASC) equipment. Therefore, seaports and container terminals demonstrate an interesting example of an intelligent node for the intermodal transport system.

Opis:
The container yard is the key element of any modern container terminal. The huge amount of boxes dwelling on the operational areas of the terminals could occupy a lot of space, since one-time storage capacity of the container mega terminal handling over one million TEUs annually is something around 20 000 TEUs. The ecological pressure imposed on modern container terminal does not permit to allocate for this storage large land areas, thus forcing the box stacks grow high. The selection of the individual boxes becomes a complex and time-consuming procedure, demanding a lot of technological resources and deteriorating the service quality. The predicted combinatorial growth of redundant moves needed to clear the access to the individual container is aggravated by the well-known and widely discussed ‘sinking effect’, when containers arrived earlier are gradually covered by the ones arriving afterwards. While the random selection could be adequately assessed by combinatorial methods, the ‘sinking effect’ allows neither intuitive consideration, nor any traditional mathematical means. The only practical way to treat this problem today is in simulation, but the simulation itself causes yet another problem: the problem of model adequacy. This study deals with one possible approach to the problem designated to prove its validity and adequacy, without which the simulation has naught gnoseological value.

The main subject of research involves the global freight market in the sector of container shipping, and in particular the mechanism for setting up freight rates. The aim of research is to identify and analyse the features and characteristics typical of this market, resulting from the character of market mechanism, as well as to indicate factors which determine market fluctuations and evaluate its impact for the carriers and shippers. Moreover, the causes and effects of fluctuations in effective demand and potential supply in the sector of freight market were identified in terms of their impact on freight rates. The analysis includes three main types of container markets, existing today on a global scale, and characterizes the strategies and modes of behaviour of global container operators undertaking activity on these markets. By applying the theory of mass random service and queueing theory to examine the container freight market mechanisms the method of freight rates short-term forecasting was presented which can be used as an instrument for taking decisions in the sector of global maritime logistics.

The article is devoted to the problem of strategic analysis of logistics companies in the market of container transportation. The analysis of tendencies of development of the market of container transportations is carried out. A methodical approach to conducting a strategic analysis of the state and potential of the logistics company, taking into account their specifics. This methodological approach is based on a modified method of analysing the competition of the five forces of competition of Michael Porter. For the implementation of this methodology in practice, evaluation indicators have been developed and proposed for evaluation in the areas of competitive forces, which take into account the specifics of logistics companies. In the context of the introduction of this methodological approach, a comprehensive approach to the strategic analysis of logistics companies was formed, which is based on two stages of evaluation. The first stage is related to the analysis of three parameters that must be taken into account when analysing competition in the market: the level of threat from substitute products; the level of industry competition and the threat of new players. In the context of the analysis of each parameter, evaluation indicators were proposed that take into account the specifics of logistics companies. At the second stage of strategic analysis, a comprehensive assessment of the impact of environmental factors on logistics companies and assessment of their competitiveness is recommended. Combined with the methodology for assessing external factors affecting the industry and provides an opportunity to calculate a summary indicator of the level of competitiveness. This two-stage approach allows you to comprehensively assess and analyse all factors affecting the logistics activities of enterprises. The proposed methodological approach to the strategic analysis of the state and potential of the logistics company, taking into account their specifics, was implemented on the example of logistics providers of the Black Sea region of Ukraine.

W mniejszym stopniu kolej obsługiwała transport intermodalny z Polski w kierunku wschodnim (Rosja, Ukraina, Chiny).[...]
The paper analyses the distribution of terminal and storage infrastructure relative to each other as well as directions and major railway routes of intermodal carriage. There were only a few multimodal logistics centres operating in Poland. The warehouse market was dominated by industrial developers, which in 2012 had their facilities in 150 locations. Approximately a half of those centres were located at a short distance from the nearest container terminal and 15% had their own railway sidings. Logistics infrastructure were concentrated primarily in the Upper Silesian conurbation, Warsaw metropolitan area, Wroclaw agglomeration and central Poland. Railway intermodal transport intensively developed between seaports and inland terminals in Poland. In a lesser extent rail connection served intermodal transport from Poland to east (Russia, Ukraine, China).

Opis:
Poland is a key element of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). It is also an active container shipping participant in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR). The aim of the article is to determine whether further development of the BRI is a threat for the Polish BSR container shipping, and vice versa. The main tools used to achieve the objectives mentioned above include a literature review, logical reasoning and statistical analysis. The results of a survey on the importance of chosen factors for the further development of the BRI in Poland, as well as the SWOT analysis of these factors are also part of the proposed study. The performed research shows that such factors as expansion of deep water infrastructure, the increase of seaport transhipment potential or competitiveness of the BSR are among biggest threats to the future of the BRI in Poland. At the same time, it seems that in the near future, the further development of the BRI will not significantly affect the container shipping in the BSR.
