Opis:
One of the main aims of Peter Gärdenfors’ theory of conceptual spaces is to provide, by means of the geometric methods of representation, a formal model for the prototype structure of concepts. However, his model is not free of theoretical problems regarding an adequate description of the psychologically correct structure of concepts. Therefore, the main purpose of this paper is to raise several questions concerning the relationship between the typicality function and the membership function, as well as to propose some solutions to these problems by offering a model that binds both functions formally. Thus, the proposed model is intended to complement Gärdenfors’ conceptual spaces theory, in which the proper shape of both functions has not been sufficiently problematized. The second aim of the paper is to propose a new approach to vagueness, which is coherent with the formal requirements of the conceptual spaces framework, and at the same time is in line with the solution proposed in the first part of the text.

Opis:
Conceptual space framework is used for representing knowledge in cognitive systems. In this paper, we have adapted conceptual space framework for prosthetic arm considering its cognitive abilities such as receiving signals, recognizing and decoding the signal and responding with the corresponding action in order to develop a conceptual space of the prosthetic arm. Cognitive functionalities such as learning, memorizing and distinguishing configurations of prosthetic arm are achieved via its conceptual space. To our knowledge, this work is the first attempt to adapt the conceptual spaces to model cognitive functionalities of prosthetic arm. Adding to this, we have made use of different notion of concept that reflects the topological structure in concepts. To model the actions of the prosthetic arm functionalities, we have made use of force patterns to represent action. Similarly, to model the distinguishing ability, we make use of the relationship between the attributes conveyed by adapted different notion of concept.

Opis:
This paper is devoted to the empirical evaluation of the extension of the Gärdenfors’ similarity model. His proposition insufficiently emphasizes the asymmetry of the modeled relationship of similarity. The proposed modification allows one to include the asymmetry of similarity and significantly sensitize the model to any contextual nuances. The model was compared with other theoretical proposals of geometrical modeling of similarity, including two asymmetric models and one symmetrical. The empirical evaluation of the model took place in two series of experiments. The obtained statistical data were compared with results inferred by tested models. The evaluation was based on iterative procedure designed to minimize the error generated by all compared models.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to show that the middle level of mental representations in a conceptual spaces framework is consistent with the OOP paradigm. We argue that conceptual spaces framework together with vague prototype theory of categorization appears to be the most suitable solution for modeling the cognitive apparatus of humans, and that the OOP paradigm can be easily and intuitively reconciled with this framework. First, we show that the prototypebased OOP approach is consistent with Gärdenfors’ model in terms of structural coherence. Second, we argue that the product of cloning process in a prototype-based model is in line with the structure of categories in Gärdenfors’ proposal. Finally, in order to make the fuzzy object-oriented model consistent with conceptual space, we demonstrate how to define membership function in a more cognitive manner, i.e. in terms of similarity to prototype.

Komplementarność teorii sieci relacyjnych i teorii amalgamatówThe article aims to show that Lamb’s Relational Network Theory (RNT) (1999) is compatible with Fauconnier and Turner’s Conceptual Network Theory (CNT) (1998) and that the theories may complement each other in the analysis of language-related operations. The article presents main assumptions of both theories and describes a stratificational model of language developed by Sydney Lamb. According to Lamb, language constitutes a network of relationships which shares a number of similarities with the neural network of the human brain. Parts of the linguistic network are activated by linguistic input and brought to light by Fauconnier’s mental spaces. Additionally, the author of the article emphasises that the process of integration operates at various linguistic levels and is crucial for proper structuring of linguisticelements, which is evident from the analysis of verbal blunders.
