Opis:
Dissenting opinions to the rulings of state bodies are submitted very rarely. The purpose of this article was to identify the reasons for this phenomenon in case of rulings of collegial public finance bodies, such as committees adjudicating on cases of violation of public finance discipline (including joint adjudication committee, inter-ministerial adjudication committee, adjudication committee at the Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister Chancellery, regional adjudication committees at regional accounting chambers, the Main Adjudication Committee) and rulings of local government appeal boards adjudicating on tax matters. The research was conducted using the Computer-Assisted Web Interview research technique. The research material included 67 questionnaires completed by a group of employees-adjudicators of the above-mentioned bodies. Their analysis led to the following research findings which explained why dissenting opinions to the decisions of collegial public finance authorities are submitted so seldom: rare occurrence of controversies among the members of the adjudicating panel, personality traits of the members of these bodies, and more specifically, striving to ensure their independence and a sense of collegiality. The shape of the procedural provisions governing the rules for submitting dissenting opinions cannot be seen as one of such reasons.

Opis:
Morphologically rich languages always constitute a great challenge for language learners. The learner must be able to understand the information encoded in different word forms of the same root and to generate the correct word form to express certain syntactic functions and grammatical relations by conjugating a verb or declining a noun, an adjective or a pronoun. One way to improve one’s language skills is through exercises that focus on certain aspects of grammar. In this paper, a language learning application is presented that is intended to help learners of Finnish and Hungarian (with Hungarian and Finnish L1, respectively) acquire new vocabulary items, as well as practice some grammar aspects that according to surveys are considered difficult by learners of these languages with the other Finno-Ugric language being the learner’s native tongue, while alleviating the need to create these exercises manually. This application is a result of an on-going research project. In this research project, bilingual translation pairs and additional monolingual data were collected that can be utilized to build language learning exercises and an online bilingual dictionary with the help of automatic methods. Several linguistic patterns and rules were defined in order to automatically select example sentences that focus on a given part of the target language. These sentences were automatically annotated with the help of language processing tools. Due to the large size of the previously collected data sets, to date, only a subset of the analyzed sentences and the bilingual translation pairs has been manually evaluated. The results of this evaluation are discussed in this paper in order to estimate the precision of the methodology presented here. To ensure the precision of the information and the reliability of the application, only manually validated data sets are displayed. In this project, continuous data validation is planned, since it leads to more and more examples and vocabulary items that learners can benefit from.

The purpose of this article is to present a fraction of the results of the study carried out among Polish academic teachers of interpreting who – because of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic – had to adapt to teaching interpreting skills online. The first part of the paper addresses the issue of how the pandemic generated new themes of interpreting research, which may be roughly subsumed into two strands of interpreting studies – the research into the professional interpreting market and the changes imposed by the pandemic restrictions, and the research into interpreter training which had to respond to the restrictions on physical face-to-face education by getting online. Then, attention is focused on the use of computer-assisted interpreting teaching, which – already for some time – has been incorporating modern technological solutions for the benefit of interpreting students. Finally, the last part of this paper offers insight into a study dedicated to the views of Polish interpreting teachers on the usefulness of modern technology and Internet-based solutions they had to use when teaching interpreting skills in the new reality of COVID-19-forced education. All in all, the paper shows that interpreting teachers appreciate technological innovations in interpreting teaching and, as might be envisaged, some of them will become an everyday part of modern interpreting training.

The accessibility and multimodality of modern technologies make them particularly beneficial for pronunciation learning and teaching. Google Play Store offers more than 300 English pronunciation apps, many of which have received high ratings ranging from 4.5 to 4.9 out of 5 stars. Most of these apps are available for free. Due to their capacity for individualized, customized, self-paced “anytime – anywhere” learning and automated feedback on individual performance and progress, these apps are gaining increasing popularity among English learners worldwide. This paper reports on a small-scale study that examined five of the highest-rated free apps: Elsa Speak – Learning English Pronunciation by ELSA, English Pronunciation 2019 – Correct Pronunciation by Grounders, English Pronunciation by NVG Std, Pronounce It by Maclo Studios, and Quick Pronunciation Tool by Tiago English Tutor. Twenty first-year BA students of English Philology from the University of Łódź participated in the study by testing the five apps and answering questions related to their overall design, utility, potential for learning, teaching, and pronunciation assessment. The results of the study revealed the learners’ practical uses of the apps and their views on the value of using these apps for practising, teaching, and assessing English pronunciation skills.
Powszechna dostępność i multimodalność nowoczesnych technologii czynią je szczególnie użytecznymi w procesie nauczania języka obcego, w tym nauczania wymowy. Sklep internetowy Google Play Store oferuje obecnie ponad 300 aplikacji do nauki wymowy angielskiej. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono wyniki badania pilotażowego, w którym zbadano pięć najwyżej ocenianych darmowych aplikacji: Elsa Speak – Learning English Pronunciation firmy ELSA, English Pronunciation 2019 – Correct Pronunciation firmy Grounders, English Pronunciation – Learn Pronunciation firmy NVG Std, Pronounce It autorstwa Maclo Studios oraz Quick Pronunciation Tool autorstwa Tiago English Tutor.

Opis:
Remote work issues for disabled people are still poorly understood. Due to the high unemployment rate among disabled people, analysis, and solutions to increase access to work are necessary. Remote workers must deal with space, time, and the blurring of boundaries between home and work life. Remote contact also weakens management-coworker relationships, reducing workplace support and professional development. The aim of the paper was to collect opinions on remote work based on interviews with 15 people with disabilities. Their opinions expressed their experience with the reality in which they function. Dual Sentiment Analysis was used with a dedicated qualitative analysis tool (QDA MINER). The respondents mainly described remote work as having good working conditions at home and being satisfied with less contact with others. Our findings suggest that organizing remote work for people with disabilities in a highly individualized way that takes into account their disabilities, job functions, and complex emotional responses can improve job satisfaction and the work environment. Remote work reduces social contact, which reduces stress and boosts job satisfaction for disabled people.

Digitalizacja danych tekstowych jest obecnie powszechna w wielu dziedzinach życia społecznego, a rozwój technik cyfrowych sprzyja powstawaniu nowych narzędzi wykorzystywanych przez naukowców. Przedmiotem refleksji jest zastosowanie programów z rodziny CAQDAS (Computer-Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis) do komputerowo wspomaganej analizy danych w procedurze badawczej. Celem rozważań podjętych w artykule jest krytyczna analiza możliwości wykorzystania programu MAXQDA VERBI Software w analizowaniu danych tekstowych z perspektywy użytkownika. W pierwszej części artykułu przywołano kluczowe etapy rozwoju narzędzi cyfrowych, którymi mogą posługiwać się badacze podczas analizy danych tekstowych. Następnie wyjaśniono pojęcie laboratorium tekstowe, oraz, na przykładzie własnej praktyki analitycznej, opisano sposób pracy z programem MAXQDA podczas redukcji i reprezentacji danych. W kolejnej części zaprezentowano wyniki analizy porównawczej źródeł wtórnych, w której wykorzystano dane pochodzące z trzech źródeł: rankingu cytowań artykułów naukowych Herzing’s Publish or Perish oraz wielodziedzinowego konsorcjum baz ProQuest i platformy Biblioteka Nauki.
Digitization of textual data is now commonplace in many areas of society, and the development of digital techniques is fostering the emergence of new tools used by researchers. The article addresses the issue of the application of computer-assisted analysis of textual data in the procedure of qualitative research from the perspective of its user. Due to the wide scope of the issue being addressed, the question being considered is the applicability of working with a selected program from the CAQDAS family - VERBI Software's MaxQda program. The first part of the article recalls milestones in the development of digital tools that researchers can use to analyse textual data. Next, the metaphor of a "text lab" is explained, describing how to work with the MaxQda program during data reduction and representation. The next section presents the results of a comparative analysis of secondary sources, using data from three sources: Herzing's Publish or Perish citation ranking, ProQuest databases, and the Biblioteka Nauki platform. The corpus of data consisted of research reports in which the authors declared that they used the MaxQda program. The analysis made it possible to identify the program's capabilities on which the authors of the reports focus, as well as the scientific fields that the authors represent. The conclusion reflects on the contribution of modern technology to the development of qualitative data analysis, and provides examples of the dilemmas that a researcher may face during the next stages of computer-assisted analytical work, using their own analytical practice as an example.

Software and digital visual mapping tools have recently been implemented by educators and academics for several educational and related purposes. The current study was set out to explore the effect of using CAAM on Thai EFL learners’ argumentative writing performance and their self-regulation of learning awareness. A total of 28 freshman students were purposively selected as the subjects of the study. The researcher used a mixed-mode method type of research involving a pre- and post-test design. Data was collected from a single group of participants who participated in eight sessions based on the use of CAAM in their writing processes. A Self-Regulation of Learning Scale (SRS) was utilized to identify the students’ awareness of their self-regulation of learning. The results reveal that the CAAM method used by the respondents made noteworthy gains on their argumentative writing performance across task achievement, coherence-cohesion, lexical resource and grammatical range and accuracy, as indicated by a significant difference between their pre- and post- test results. Furthermore, four out of six components of SRS reveal a significant relationship with their writing performance indicative that the respondents have become more cognizant of their self-regulation in terms of planning, self-monitoring, effort and self-efficacy. Finally, qualitative findings reveal that the respondents had positive feelings about using CAAM in their writing processes as well as enhanced their awareness on their self-regulation of learning.

Sagittal imbalance causes low back pain, hip impingement, and influences the whole skeleton and muscular system of our body. It is documented in the literature on spinal deformities that good long-term surgical results can only be achieved by restoring sagittal balance and spinopelvic harmony as part of surgical treatment. Currently, the state of the art in sagittal balance determination is based on conventional radiology or an EOS system both using X-ray radiation. These procedures are associated with radiation exposure for the patients. Therefore, a new anterior approach is shown in this work to measure sagittal balance with a navigated ultrasound system without any radiation exposure. The anterior pelvic plane and a newly defined sternum plane are considered to provide an assessment of the sagittal balance. This new approach was tested in a trial on 10 symptom-free subjects by using a smartphone navigated ultrasound system. The relationship between the rotation of the pelvis and the upper body inclination in young healthy people is examined in a standing position. The study with new determined landmarks (incisura jugularis, superior iliac spinas, and symphysis pubis) gives us significant different results between male and female test persons. A proposal for a classification of sagittal balance is achieved which defines a reasonable range for the Sternum Tilt of -0.1 ± 1.5° / 3.7 ± 2.5°. The significant advantage of this method is to evaluate the sagittal balance with a cost effective, smart system without any radiation exposure to the patient.
