    Non-stability of comparative literature The paper focuses on the history and current situation of the discipline of comparative literature, particularly on the condition of comparative studies in literature and comparative cultural studies. A general discussion on comparative literature as ‘indiscipline’ (David Ferris’s concept), based on negative definitions (e.g. Hugo von Meltzl), limitations of comparison and comparability (Paul van Tieghem, René Etiemble, Gayatri Ch. Spivak, Jonathan Culler, Kenneth Reinhard), and individual projects (George Steiner, Daniel-Henri Pageaux, Armando Gnisci, Gayatri Ch. Spivak, Emily Apter, Susan Bassnett), leads to the conclusion that the ‘non-stability’ has been a crucial problem for comparative literature in the course of the last two centuries. Three metaphors are used to describe comparative literature: the Eiffel Tower (the idea of modernity), the World Trade Center (comparative literature as translatio) and the Tower of Babel (translation). In this context, the author argues that modern comparative studies can be defined not as a rigorous intellectual discipline, but rather as a discipline in statu nascendi, as a practice of reading and interpretation

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present an idea for understanding cultural processes in the organizational�discourse from the perspective of four paradigms in management sciences based on the concept of G. Burrell and G. Morgan. Methodology: The author has elaborated a valuable list of structures of the scientifi c theory based on the respective paradigms and has compared cultural paradigms in management sciences. The methodology involves an analysis of classical and recent world literature. Nowadays there is no consensus on the defi nitions, types or research models of organizational culture. Originality: In the literature on the subject we can fi nd many, sometimes contradictory cultural research studies that require further analysis. Precisely because of the diversity and complexity of cultural issues in management sciences a multi-paradigmatic analysis is necessary. The paper presents a proposal for a pluralistic approach to the theory and methodology of cultural studies in management sciences

    The article is an attempt of a comparative theoretical reflection on melancholy, showing how this theme exists in the literature of different nations. The considerations were included in the form of “excerpts” on the model of the Czeslaw Milosz’s work Excerpts from Useful Tomes. Each excerpt is preceded by a brief interpretive-informing comment, which just throws light on the text and gives voice to the poems themselves. Due to the specifics of this form of expression, only poetic texts were included in the area of research. The aim of this article is to draw attention to the omnipresence of melancholy and show different varieties of melancholy writing taking into account the convergences and divergences in the poetic representations of this theme in the world literature.

    Opis:
    Culinary culture is an interesting and meaningful aspect that has captivated the scholars’ attention recently. This article introduces and analyses some features in chopstick use of Vietnamese culture in comparison with the use of utensils (forks, knives, spoons) in Western culture. Comparative cultural studies viewpoint and typological method were applied to highlight the differences and similarities in tangible and intangible culture of those cultures. The findings of the research will help the audience have better understanding and knowledge of cultures in the world aiming to orientate towards the empathy and mutual appreciation.
    Kultura kulinarna jest ciekawym i ważnym tematem, który wzbudza zainteresowanie badaczy. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie i analiza niektórych cech korzystania pałeczek w kulturze wietnamskiej i porównanie jej do wykorzystania sztućców (widelców, noży, łyżek) w kulturze zachodniej. W celu podkreślenia różnic i podobieństw pomiędzy tymi dwoma obszarami w zakresie kultury materialnej i niematerialnej przyjęto punkt widzenia kulturoznawstwa porównawczego oraz wykorzystano metodę typologiczną. Wyniki badania przyczynią się do lepszego zrozumienia i poznania kultur na świecie, kierując uwagę czytelnika na kwestie empatii i wzajemnego szacunku.

    The article’s aim is to reflect upon the transgenerational and transnational sustainability of Central European memory in literary and cultural space of South Africa. It also investigates links between John Maxwell Coetzee’s oeuvre, as well as works by other South African authors (e.g. Dan Jacobson, Lionel Abrahams, Deborah Levy), with cultural and, above all, literary universe of Central Europe. While analysing selected literary and cultural texts (among others, hitherto unpublished archival documents), the author points to the fact that the Nobel laureate’s consistently and programmatically displayed interest in Central Europe ought to be considered within a wider context of systematic and creative “dialogue” with Central Europe which has been carried out by writers and artists from South Africa in the 20th and 21st centuries. The present study is an original attempt at capturing the phenomenon of mutual cultural flows and horizontal exchange taking place between some minor literatures (and cultures), in this case: South African and Central European.

    Between literary and cultural comparative studies The article constitutes an attempt to present in a synthetic way the main assumptions behind the fundamental trends in the comparative studies of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as their evolution. Following the predominance of the influential model which had developed since the middle of the 19th century and focused chiefly on the genetic research of literary affiliations, and which had assumed the existence of a national literature as an organic entity, since the sixties of the 20th century, there arises a new perspective in comparative studies, where the fundamental role is played by thematic and structural categories (motif, concept, topic, genre, current etc.). The nineties of the 20th century bring yet another attempt to reformulate the methods of comparative studies and to abandon focusing on literary studies, in favor of cultural research in comparative studies, where the fundamental role is played, among others, by issues such as the concept of power, gender, race and also review and multi-, inter- and transculturalism

    Opis:
    The knowledge on translation, which was developed by different methodologies and different disciplines, fulfills the need of taking into consideration the structurally-artistic issues by comparative literary studies, most basic for literature and literary studies, occupying the central place in comparative literature. This shift in comparative interests is accompanied by a revealing lack of works undertaking research into developmental-typological regularities in general literature. Moreover, with the central position of translation in this discipline, it is paradoxical that resigning from text and its subject matter in favour of reception and the results of functioning of translation in the target culture has been declared. While the dislike for systemizing and typologizing facts of general literature is doubly hard because of the disapproval of dogmatic theories and the difficulties within research into the abundance of literary material, the target, the place, the circumstances and the way of functioning in time and in culture are inherent parts of the linguistically-artistic structure, that is, everything that is within interests of the contemporary culturally oriented literary studies.

In different ways, the movies rearticulate the relationship between Italy and the United States. In showing how Italians can beat Americans at sports, how they can indulge in conspicuous consumption and finally how even the United States are not alien to provincialism and backwardness, these movies express a new mood of confidence that was widely felt in Italian society at the time. However, these movies came at a moment when the Italian film industry was on the verge of its decline. Starting from the 1980s, in fact, American movies and distributors would colonize the Italian movie market and depress the Italian movie industry.

    Opis:
    Pedagogical analysis of the issues addressed in the study adopts theoretical and methodological conceptualisations, referring to Paweł Boski's (1) theory of cultural identity based on values and practices in conditions of bicultural and multicultural socialisation, Tadeusz Lewowicki's (2) theory of identity behaviours, and (3) comparative analysis in international studies. The basis for outlining the sense of identity in local, regional, national, European and extra-European dimensions manifested by academic youth and their perceptions of mixed marriages was an international comparative study conducted from 2019 to 2021 in the Polish-Czech-Slovak-Ukrainian borderland. The analysis and interpretation of the collected empirical material indicate that – although there have been political transformations in the neighbouring countries, they cooperate in many spheres – both traditional ('constant') elements and new phenomena and processes, determined by the complexity and diversity of historical, cultural-social, cultural-personal and economic conditions, are preserved in the image of identity behaviour manifested by students today. These shape with particular intensity the cultural identity of young learners in the years of early adulthood.

    W artykule przedstawiono koncepcje wpływu kulturowego sformułowane przez czeskich, ukraińskich i polskich intelektualistów przed drugą wojną światową. Przykłady słowiańskiego stosunku do kulturowej dominacji i podporządkowania, jak również do szerszych aspektów zjawiska wpływu kulturowego, mogą być traktowane jako wartościowa tradycja dla dzisiejszych studiów porównawczych skoncentrowanych na Europie ŚrodkowoWschodniej. W przeciwieństwie do założeń przyjmujących istnienie kulturowego centrum oraz prowincji, utożsamianych z rozróżnieniem Zachodniej oraz Wschodniej Europy (wraz z jej częścią Środkową), a to stanowisko zachowało popularność w komparatystyce zachodnioeuropejskiej do późnych lat 50. XX wieku, intelektualiści słowiańscy mieli inne podejście do wskazanego problemu. Nie godzili się z przeświadczeniem, że istnieje kulturowa hierarchia wyznaczająca sztywne relacje pomiędzy kulturami dojrzałymi, aktywnymi i wpływowymi oraz tymi, które sąpasywne, naśladowcze i znajdują się na etapie dopiero kulturowego rozwoju. Postrzegali oni proces kulturowego wpływu jako zjawisko bardziej złożone, dynamiczne i powiązane z kreatywnością. Badacze tacy jak O. Hostinský, J. Mukařowský, K. Čapek, M. Drahomanow, I. Franko podkreślali, że wpływ kulturowy nie polega na przyjmowaniu postawy biernego imitowania, na czym miałby polegać pościg kultur słowiańskich za kulturami Europy Zachodniej. Wręcz przeciwnie, w procesie tym istotną rolę grają czynniki adaptacji i modyfikacji przejmowanych trendów kulturowych, a w konsekwencji obce wpływy implantowane na własne podłoże kulturowe prowadzą do powstawania zjawisk nowych i zachowujących swą odrębność. Wpływ kulturowy płynąc z Europy Zachodniej nie musi prowadzić do utraty oryginalności przez kultury rodzime (w tym przypadku trzy wymienione kultury słowiańskie: czeską, ukraińską i polską), a tam, gdzie dostrzegamy jego działanie, kultury wpływowi podległe nie powinny być automatycznie traktowane jako lustrzane odbicia kultur wpływających. Autorka, przypominając koncepcje wspomnianych badaczy, które wyprzedzały stan ówczesnej świadomości komparatystycznej, podkreśla, że mogą być one w pełni docenione w kontekście zmian w humanistyce wynikłych z kryzysu strukturalizmu. Zarazem autorka zwraca uwagę, że podejście do problemu wpływu kulturowego odegrało różną rolę w rozwoju czeskich, ukraińskich i polskich studiów porównawczych w zależności od kulturowych oraz politycznych wyzwań, jakie zjawisko wpływustwarzało w każdej z trzech społeczności.
    The article deals with ideas of cultural influence which were formulated by Czech, Ukrainian and Polish intellectuals before the second world war. Presented examples of Slavic approach to the problem of cultural domination and inferiority as well as the cultural influence in general, could be seen today as a valuable tradition for comparative studies in the region of Central and Eastern Europe. In contrary to the assumption of the existence of a cultural center and province which separated Western and Eastern Europe, which was such a popular belief in the Western comparative studies up to the late 1950s, as well as its supposition of cultural hierarchy which distinguished mature active, and influential cultures from those which are passive, imitative, only at one of many stages of its development, Slavonic intellectuals thought in a different way about the problem. They saw the process of cultural influence as a more dynamic, creative and complex phenomenon. They also stressed that not only an imitation effort took part in the pursuit of Slavic cultures after more developed Western European cultures, but also an adaptation and modification of all imitated cultural fashions and trends. As a result something new and original emerged on the grounds of Slavic culture. Therefore, their culture did not lose its original character and it should not be treated as a passive reflection of the Western European cultures. The author reminds about those concepts, which were ahead of their times and only today they can be truly appreciated in the context of post-structural changes in the humanities. The author emphasizes also that the approach to the problem of cultural influence played a different role in the development of Czech, Ukrainian and Polish comparative studies referring to the cultural and political challenges created by it.
