Opis:
Communist parties are generally associated with proletarian internationalism. How-ever, some communist parties have a double “face” – an internationalist one and nation-alist one. Present-day Czech communists successfully build on this tactic. My article will answer the following research questions: What causes the strong nationalist orientation of contemporary Czech communists? What type of nationalism does it represent? And is the outlined continuity between the interwar period and the present-day accidental or is it (at least partly) caused by certain objective political and/or social factors?

Opis:
The case of Henryk Dembiński (1908–41) represents the left-wing involvement of Polish intellectuals in the interwar period. After 1945, the party historians left a communist mark on his image. Those in exile also accepted this thesis. In fact, party historians portrayed Dembiński’s life in a one-sided fashion and omitted events inconsistent with their narrative. In light an of relevant accounts and documents, this article shows that Dembiński was neither a member of the communist party nor its youth organisation even though, in 1935–6, he participated in some activities inspired by the Communist Party of Poland (KPP), and edited a periodical supported financially by the KPP. It is unclear whether this was conscious cooperation or a matter of manipulation by the party. In 1937, Dembiński joined the Polish Socialist Party (PPS) and was engaged in catholic activities centre, which the communists at the time perceived as a change of his political views. Nonetheless, after the war, party historians unequivocally stated that he was a communist.

T he article deals with meaning of celebrations of 9 May – Victory Day – in Yugoslavia in the first few years after World War II and with the role of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia in organising these ceremonies. It is shown that this holiday was one of the cornerstones of the Communist regime propaganda and a very important occasion for creating the tradition of national liberation struggle and anti-fascism. The main role of Victory Day was to recall the victory over fascism, but also to contribute to consoli- dation of Communists’ rule and to display foreign and inner policy of the new autho- rities in Yugoslavia. The ruling party used the entire content of the celebrations to cre - ate and impose its own image of World War II and the national liberation struggle in Yugoslavia and to present the desirable image of the current international and internal political situation. These celebrations were conceived and designed by the top officers of the Communist Party, in its Agitprop apparatus, and all activities and details were dictated by Party guidelines and directives.

Mutual relations between The Communist party of Poland and The Communist party of Western Ukraine in 1920th are characterized with the presence of ponderable conflicts and recriminations. KPWU was fighting for a wide autonomy in the activity explaining it the features of development of political force on the territory of East Galicia and Volyn’ in a counterbalance to other Polish territories. KPP tried to centralize guidance upon all communist forces in Poland for better control after activity of local organizations and their maximal efficiency. Persuasion that ІІ convention of KPP in 1923 settled all conflicts and allowed two parties to be completely incorporated and to act in concert is not confirmed by several inner-party crises that became especially noticeable in the second half 1920th.

Polish historiography
Opis:
Although Polish research on the Communist International (Comintern) history began in the interwar period, the existing literature does not constitute a highly-developed field. This becomes particularly evident when Polish studies are compared to research produced in Russia, Germany, the United States, and Italy, or even India and Korea. This state of affairs is, to some degree, a result of political conditions that influenced, and continue to influence, access to archival sources. For this reason, interest in the Comintern after 1989 closely resembles the situation in research on the history of the Communist Party of Poland (KPP), which was, after all, one of the sections of the Third International. In both cases – in research on the Comintern and on the KPP – the focus was on shedding light on historical “blind spots” rather than on developing systematic studies of political organisations. Largely thanks to Professor Jerzy W. Borejsza, improvements have become evident over the past two decades in Polish research on the Comintern and related issues. Indeed, many important case studies have emerged, although what Polish research still lacks are wide-ranging monographs and analytical syntheses. This paper offers a review of Polish historiography’s most important contributions to research on the Comintern, covering the period from the interwar era to the present. It also attempts to outline potential future perspectives in the field, including a brief overview of important international works.

This paper identifies the most significant patterns of educational experience among members of the interwar Polish communist movement. The first part of the article covers the experiences that communists shared with other representatives of the social strata from which they originated: the reproduction of the social structure or their overcoming of it in the form of social advancement. It also discusses the importance of educational barriers and opportunities as factors facilitating the emergence of attitudes of radical contestation of the socio-political order. The second part identifies educational experiences that were directly related to involvement in an illegal, subversive and repressed political current, and the diverse, sometimes paradoxical consequences of that involvement for representatives of different social strata. It traces the transformations of the communist habitus and proposes the concept of ‘clandestine white-collar workers’. The article concludes that there were two patterns in the pursuit of education among the communists: acquiring a degree in revolution or for the sake of the revolution.

K omunistyczna Partia Litwy w latach 1988–1990 przeszła transformację od partii mar- ksistowsko-leninowskiej do klasycznej socjaldemokratycznej formacji noszącej nazwę Litewska Demokratyczna Partia Pracy. Potrafiła wykorzystać idee pierestrojki Michaiła Gorbaczowa do osiągnięcia swych celów.
I n the years 1988–1990, the Communist Party of Lithuania transformed from a Marxist- -Leninist party to a classic social democratic formation called the Democratic Labour Party of Lithuania. It could take advantage of Mikhail Gorbachev’s Perestroika ideas in order to achieve its own goals. The party had several experienced politicians (Algirdas Brazauskas, Česlovas Juršėnas and others) who led it during the complex political and economic transformation. The tragic events of 13 January 1991, during which 14 civi- lians were killed by Soviet soldiers, depicted how tragic and dangerous this period was. In autumn 1992, the Democratic Labour Party of Lithuania recorded a huge success in the parliamentary elections by winning over a half the mandates. Its leader Algirdas Brazauskas was elected the president of Lithuania. The formation had its representatives during all terms of offices of the Lithuanian Sejm still after 1990. Irrespective of the suc - cessful trajectory, the Lithuanian Sejm passed a resolution in June 2017 by a majority of votes and found the Communist Party of Lithuania a criminal organization. After the events of 13 January 1991, another faction of the Communist Party of Lithuania on the platform of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was accused of acting in order to overturn Lithuania’s independence, found to be illegal and against the country’s inte- rests, while its leaders were sentenced to many years of imprisonment.

Opis:
Knowledge of communism, so carefully presented in the best and the most famous work of Milovan Ðilas entitled The New Class. An Analysis of the Communist System, New York, 1957, undoubtedly resulted from his previous political practice and theoretical reflections. In the years 1941-1949, Ðilas was both a politician and one of the main ideologists and propagandists of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia. In his later writings, books and speeches, he pointed out that even in time of the war he began to express doubts whether the communistic idea, as he understood at that time, indeed could be fully realized. The above mentioned doubts should be treated hypothetically, we should approach to them with caution. Mostly because they are expressed later after World War II. We do not have a possibility to confirm its veracity on the basis of other sources, documents and messages than those presented in the article. However, the analysis of Ðilas intellectual attitude after the outbreak of the conflict between the Soviet and Yugoslav Communists in 1948, leaves no doubts that slowly and gradually, but irreversibly, Ðilas began to undermine the meaning and the possibility of building „socialism” in line with Stalinist principles. Ðilas propaganda initial admiration of Soviet reality gave way to criticism. Of course, in 1949, so at the end of the period, Ðilas was still a communist. Nevertheless, he inclined to the conviction that Stalinist model becomes a clear deviation from the „true” Marxism. It would be difficult to determine to which extent the conviction was authentic and to which extent - primarily the political consequence, arising from the fact that after the Cominform resolution of June 1948, the Yugoslav Communists, if they did not want to give up the dictatorship of Stalin, had to develop their own ideology and a line of conduct. Anyway, like other leaders of the CPY, Ðilas became a „heretic” rejecting Stalinist orthodoxy. Such „heresy” was the beginning of an attempt to build Yugoslav ideology, orthodoxy. Until the turn of the years 1953/1954 Ðilas would be one of its creators.

“In the name of Cyril and Methodius”: The Cyrillo-Methodian idea and the socialist propagandaThe paper aims to describe and analyze the dynamics of transformation undergone by the symbolism of the Cyrillo-Methodian oeuvre in the socialist propaganda in Bulgaria. The work and lives of the two saints represent the different national paradigms and state priorities before and after 1944. In the years from 1878 to 1944, St. Cyril and Methodius became a symbol of Bulgarian national identity. They were used in political propaganda to justify the Bulgarian territorial claims in the Balkans in an attempt to achieve the national ideal. On the contrary, after the socialist propaganda during the years of World War II, the Cyrillo-Methodian work became a symbol of Slavic unity and solidarity with the Soviet Union. The idea of Cyril and Methodius as a symbol of internationalism and fraternal unity of the Slavic peoples was developed by socialist propaganda in the years after 1944 and has in fact dominated the scientific interpretations of their work from that time on.The paper is based on unpublished communist addresses from the feast of St. Cyril and Methodius in 1942 and 1943 and other documents from the Central State Archives in Sofia and the Scientific Archives of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. „W imię Cyryla i Metodego”. Idea cyrylometodejska i propaganda socjalistyczna Celem artykułu są opis i analiza dynamiki transformacji symboliki misji cyrylometodejskiego w propagandzie socjalistycznej w Bułgarii. Dzieło i życie śś.
