Opis:: The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) had a lasting impact on all areas of foreign language teaching not only in Europe but also worldwide. Although activities and strategies of language mediation were already included in its action-oriented approach, no empirically developed scales and descriptors were made available for them. As a result, language mediation has found its way into European classrooms to different degrees in the last two decades. The Companion Volume with New Descriptors seems to close this gap by rendering the concept of mediation more precisely, on the one hand, and extending it, on the other hand. This article outlines and critically assesses the concept of mediation as developed in the CEFR Companion Volume, compared to the earlier concept.

Opis:: The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is a document characterized by a high level of generality, addressed to a wide range of readers. The conceptual paradigm included in the document could constitute the basis for a new trend in language didactics; however, a lot of further work and research should be carried out for the new approach to achieve the status of independent and efficient methodology. The first prerequisite for introducing necessary modifications is a reflexive approach to the recommendations of CEFR, especially those which are methodological in character. The lack of any rules or procedures showing how to facilitate the achievement of learning objectives is the most frequent objection made against the CEFR. The focus on what has to be taught should go along with how to teach and why. Reflexivity which occupies a marginal position in the CEFR has to become a priority for its users if the methodology outlined there is to constitute the new era in language didactics.

Opis:: This article is intended to contribute to the academic debate on intercultural German language teaching and the relevant research in Poland. The authors present a critical overview and analysis of selected constitu¬ent aspects of intercultural education and keywords which are important for the evaluation of goals and content within the framework of interculturally-oriented teaching of German in Poland. The authors also discuss the form of presentation of intercultural aspects of education in The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment (Council of Europe, 2001), in the Polish core curriculum and in selected German language teaching materials which are meant to shape the intercultural competence of Polish learners at different levels of proficiency and in different types of schools.
