Opis:
The display mode is intended for facilitation of building strategies for collision avoidance by so-called B-manoeuvres. It can be used in ECDIS, ARPA and the simulator systems. B-manoeuvre includes the segment of deviation at a certain angle from the initial course and at the end of it the segment parallel to the initial way’s line (planned route). The offered mode is based on the use of forbidden domains for B-manoeuvres. These domains allow choosing parameters and beginning moment of B-manoeuvre for collision avoidance with one or a few vessels. The account of presence of navigation hazards at the choice of B-manoeuvre is produced by setting the borders of maximum lateral shifting from planned route. The offered mode enables visual drafting of strategies for collision avoidance with vessels by successive B-manoeuvres. It is possible to use this mode as basis of computer search of strategies for collisions avoidance with a few targets.

Opis:
This paper is a continuation of papers dedicated to a radar-based CTPA (Collision Threat Parameters Area) display designed to support safe manoeuvre selection. The display visualizes all the ships in an encounter and presents situational overview from the own ship's point of view. It calculates and displays information on unsafe or unrealistic own ship's course & speed allowing a user to select a safe manoeuvre. So far only the manual selection was possible, thus the paper aims at presenting a heuristic approach towards the manoeuvre selection when using the display.

Opis:
Manoeuvring characteristics of the vessels at the head-on situation are examined in this study. The meetings between the power-driven vessels are considered based on their propellers. These vessels can either have a single propeller or double propellers. A vessel with a single right-handed propeller alters her course to port side easier than the starboard side. There exists an unnoticed gap, therefore the authors discuss the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 (COLREGs), Rule 14, considering the vessel orientation based on its propeller walk. After presenting all possible cases and their probable consequences, this paper offers authorities to embed the information of propeller characteristics into the Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) in order to prevent misunderstandings during the VHF communications, probable collision risks and discussions on liability issues in case of marine accidents.

We have proposed Fuzzy-CBR to find a solution from past knowledge retrieved from the database and adapted to the new situation. However, ontology is needed in identifying concepts, relations and instances that are involved in a situation in order to improve and facilitate the efficient retrieval of similar cases from the CBR database. This paper proposes the way to apply ontology for identifying the concepts involved in a new case, used as inputs, for ship collision avoidance support system and in solving for similarity through document articulation and abstraction levels. These ontologies will be used to build a conceptual model of a manoeuvring situation.

Opis:
The automatic collision avoidance system introduced in this paper is a system constantly calculating optimal manoeuvring method from the risk and economic preference in the ship manoeuvring space where the course change and the deceleration are performed. The authors also propose a system that quantitatively evaluates the collision avoidance manoeuvring results. Based on the evaluation results of this system, the authors are setting parameters so that ship manoeuvring that does not give anxiety to target ships to be avoided is also realized in automatic collision avoidance manoeuvring. In addition, comparison between the manoeuvring results of the automatic collision avoidance system and the veteran captain's manoeuvring results was quantitatively compared by the proposed evaluation system. Verification experiments were successfully conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed automatic collision avoidance system on the actual ship navigating in congested waters.

Opis:
Avoidance of collisions is one of the most important tasks for the officer of the watch on a ship’s bridge. Measures and actions required to avoid such accidents are described in the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1972 and still valid, with several minor amendments, since then. On the basis of a proper look-out at all times, by sight and hearing, and the use of all available means, also including technical equipment installed on-board as well as information provided by a Vessel Traffic Service (VTS), the navigating officer collects traffic and environmental data and combines them with their own ship data to construct a mental traffic image for the assessment of risk of collision with other objects in the vicinity. In the case wherre there is an unacceptable risk she or he has to decide on taking action. In most of the cases decision making is appropriate to the prevailing circumstances and ships maneuver and pass at a safe distance. Only in very rare cases, due to whatever reasons, watch officers fail in taking appropriate actions in good time. It is assumed that, if effective alerting algorithms would be available, a substantial number of collisions at sea, and especially in coastal waters, can be avoided by making the watch officer aware that the ‘last line of defence’ for taking action is close to come. It is assumed that there is potential in applying the principle of the resolution advisory alert of an ACAS (Airborne Collision Avoidance System)/TCAS (Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System) in aviation and adapt it to the needs of maritime traffic. In this paper, the authors introduce a method for triggering collision warnings by focusing specifically on the critical last phase of an encounter and taking into account the maneuvering characteristics of the navigating ship. They comprehensively explore the application using scenario studies discussing the operational aspects of varying implementation states (one ship only, SOLAS ships only).
