Opis:
Processes of European identity formation are analysed here in terms of identity work and, specifically, relationship (interplay) between biographical and collective identity work. First sections of the text (1 and 2) are focussed on grounding the approach in a range of theoretical orientations (symbolic interactionism and culturalist perspectives), on outlining its methodological implications (the rationale for using the method of autobiographical narrative interviewing and various methods of text analysis), and, finally, on developing research questions and preliminary analytical dimensions of studying the collective identity work, especially in relation to European identity work, the latter being based on results of the author’s research on the minority nation society of Wales (e.g. collective identity constructions, and figurations, in terms of cultural periphery / centre, hybridity, and marginality). In the next step of analysis, these preliminary questions and dimensions are related to problems of European identity work in general. In the next section (3) overall heuristic strategies of the offered project are formulated: the attitude of refractive self-reflection, the dialogical principle of calibrating research interactants’ perspectives, a multi-layer approach to the interplay between individual experiences and a variety of collective meaning resources, the strategy of contrastive comparison of studied cases and, finally, the zooming procedure of focussing (coding) empirical materials. The last section of the text (4) relates to the objectives / expected products of the project concerning dimensions and integrated model of collective identity work in Europe, and their practical implications for a range of social / political activities in education, legislation, governance, as well as for NGOs, social arenas and social movements.

This reflection will focus on a corpus of testimonies collected in Metz a few months after the terrorist attacks on November 13, 2015 in France. We will discuss how the media narratives of these attacks build an internalized representation of a national event among speakers who live 350 km away from the site of these attacks. It emerges a balance between cohesive momentum and local withdrawal, in particular through the involvement and the emotion of citizens. We will show that the distance Lorraine/Paris and its suburbs appears in a polarizing or unifying apprehension. Through the prism of the media consulted, an articulation occurs between projective collective identities and frozen identities of the past.

The article attempts to analyze the discourse formulas: on behalf of Rzeczypospolita and on behalf of Poland in the speeches of the presidents of the Third Polish Republic (1995-2023). The aim is to describe the potential of these formulas in the context of constructing the collective identity. The authors continue the debate undertaken in the previous publication (Dyoniziak & Pirogowska, 2023) and show on the basis of 1000 presidential speeches written on www.prezydent.pl that the proper name Rzeczpospolita has greater identity potential than the name Polska in creating a national community.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the image of Yugoslavia in the collective memories of the post–Yugoslav societies. The author of this text, basing on an assumption that every society has a great number of collective memories, highlights the fact that among the Balkan nations one can find both supporters and opponents not only of the SFRY but also of the idea of the cooperation among the Southern Slavs. Both positive and negative opinions of Yugoslavia in the collective memories are based not on the sober assessment of the historical facts but on collective emotions and historical and political myths. The anti–Yugoslav discourse in primarily based on the national mythology. The discourse of the supporters of the Yugoslav tradition one the other hand, goes back in a large extend to the transnational myths. By discussing these two types of ideas about Yugoslavia, the author of this text tries to show their impact on the current political decisions.

Opis:
After the whaling moratorium of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) came into force in 1986, Japanese whaling activities such as small−type coastal whaling, scientific whaling in the Antarctic, driving whaling or hand−harpooning continued on a reduced level. The zero−catch moratorium had an enormous impact on the whalers’, the whalers families and the traditional whaling towns. Being located in very remote rural areas, seaside communities found themselves involved in crisis concerning their economic, cultural, spiritual, social and moral development. Results of ethnographic fieldwork conducted in a contemporary whaling town in Japan show that whaling is still a part of the collective memory of the town: whalers and non−whalers construct their identities through the articulation of a strong attachment to the traditional whaling town and their ancestors. From the very beginning whaling was an economic activity, an industry, but it was so dominant (“whales are my life”) that all inhabitants were also involved in whaling related activities (sharing, arts and crafts). Today, whaling activities on the sea and on the land are decreasing. Additionally, whale and whaling symbolization is increasing. Inhabitants of the community experienced pressure from anti−whaling campaigns by global environmental groups and animal welfare organizations. Due to these experiences a new community identity emerged involving whaling as a reflected articulation, a marker of a cultural boundary in relation to Euro−Americans, but also in relation to urban Japanese and other rural communities which are not whaling, securing the future of the town as whaling town.

Opis:
The emergence of Poland’s Komitet Obrony Robotników, KOR, is a challenge for social movement research whose concepts were mainly developed studying movements in Western democratic countries. The currently dominating structuralist rationalist approach tends to reduce protests to a strategic reaction to favourable opportunity structures. Although this approach offers an adequate evolutionary explanation for KOR’s success, it does not offer a convincing causal explanation for its emergence and the mobilization of activists. This article develops an alternative explanation, using concepts from theories of collective identity, american pragmatism, Émile Durkheim, and Max Weber.

Opis:
This article presents an approach to analysing collective identity in discourse that distinguishes the linguistic and semiotic description of textual features from their socio-cognitive interpretation. Collective identities are theorised as conceptual structures comprising beliefs and knowledge, norms and values, attitudes and expectations as well as emotions, and as being reinforced and negotiated in discourse. A number of linguistic and semiotic features are suggested to ascertain what collective identities are constructed in texts and how. These include social actor representation, process types, evaluation, modality, metaphoric expressions and intertextuality. The findings from such an analysis are then linked to questions about genre and the participants and processes of discourse practice as well as to the social context and the ideologies by which it is dominated. The analytical procedure is exemplified with an excerpt from a retailer’s catalogue that is investigated for the discursive construction and socio-cognitive representation of gender and sexual identity.

Based on the analysis of 30 biographical narrative interviews with male and female residents of post-Soviet Belarus, the following four schematic narrative templates of Belarusian collective identity have been identified: the pro-Russian narrative, victimized negative identity, Belarusian nationalist scheme and pro-democratic narrative template. The focus of the article is on the interpretive frame of ‘collectivization of innocence’ as a foundation for the victimized negative ethnic identity and the pro-democratic narrative template underpinning a civil polity project. Excerpts of the interviews exhibiting the conflicting templates have been analyzed as illustrative examples.

Opis:
The objective of the present study is to examine the role of St. John of Capistrano – a Franciscan preacher and missionary – in the process of forming the identity of the community of Czech Reformed Franciscans in the 17th century. The aforementioned figure was the actual initiator of the creation of Czech Observant province, which in the 17th century was transformed into a Reformed province. Based on the analysis of the description of history of the convent of St. Anthony in Wrocław, included in Chronica de origine (1678) by Father Bernard Sannig, and of the painting St. John of Capistrano from this convent, it becomes possible to present this saint as an important element of the identity, both on the provincial and local (the convent in Wrocław) level.

Stanowią one punkt wyjścia do analizy zagadnienia „pracy nad tożsamością europejską” w perspektywie ogólnej. W części następnej (3) nakreślone są heurystyczne strategie badania, obejmujące postawę refrakcyjnej autorefleksji (spojrzenie na siebie z punktu widzenia ‘kulturowego innego’), zasadę dialogowego ustalania perspektyw przyjmowanych przez badaczy, podejście do relacji między doświadczeniem biograficznym i odmianami kolektywnych zasobów znaczeniowych z punktu widzenia wielowarstwowego charakteru powiązań między nimi, strategię wyboru zasad kontrastywnej analizy badanych przypadków, wreszcie procedurę „zmiennej ogniskowej” w kodowaniu materiału empirycznego. Tematem ostatniej części (4) są cele i spodziewane rezultaty badania: określenie wymiarów i całościowego modelu „pracy nad tożsamością europejską”, a także ich implikacji dla rozmaitych dziedzin społecznej i politycznej praktyki – edukacji, legislacji, praktyki rządzenia / zarządzania, jak również działalności organizacji pozarządowych, aren i ruchów społecznych.

This article explores the methodological implications of investigating the collective identity of Fathers For Justice (FFJ). More specifically, a three-pronged approach of employing participant observation, interviews, and content analysis is assessed as the basis for understanding FFJ’s collective identity. This methodological approach reveals that meanings and practices related to post-separation and divorced fatherhood as well as the importance of children are a significant dimension of a FFJ collective identity. I conclude that an important part of the FFJ collective identity is not based on these activists perceiving themselves as self-serving (Fathers for Just Us), but as those seeking equality in terms of being recognized as continous parents after separation and divorce (Fathers are Us).

The article aims to trace the dynamics of contention in austerity-driven Slovenia, explain why it ended, through the processes of demobilization, despite the protest movement’s initial successes, and verify the explanatory power of Charles Tilly and Sidney Tarrow’s theoretical framework of demobilization. The analysis applies the method of source analysis, conceptual qualitative content analysis, and the conceptual framework of contentious politics. In doing so, it addresses the research problems of the dynamics of contention in Slovenia and why the contention resulted in demobilization. The article argues that after mass mobilization an upward scale shift appeared. The shift moved the contention beyond its local origins in Maribor, touched on the interests and values of new subjects, and involved a shift of venue to sites where the demands might have been met by state institutions. The dynamics of contention was a cycle of active and passive contentious episodes. The movement identity shift and successful recognition of its claims influenced the performances and episode sequence. The processes of demobilization started when people stopped attending protests, organizing particular performances, and implementing innovations to modular performances instead. Demobilization occurred when most of the protesters became discouraged from protest through boredom and a desire to return to everyday routines.

Opis:
During the last three decades, few essential transformations of Lithuanian society took place – from a closed (according to the terminology of H. Bergman and K. Popper) soviet society during a short period of open society functioning it evolved into a holed (according to P. Aleksandravičius) society. The Republic of Lithuania becoming the rule of law and creation of liberal democracy was a favourable context of the transformations mentioned. These transformations were ensured not only by establishment of free market economy but also by corresponding legislation and implementation of legal norms. The article analyses inter-directional methodological possibilities to reveal a legal identity of Lithuanian society. Creation of such possibilities is based on three ideas of Western civilisation: 1. The idea of compliance with the rules of common or social (now – public) behaviour. 2. The idea of legitimate powers of sovereign to create common (social or public) behaviour rules and to organize and control their implementation. It evolved into the idea of the rule of law. 3. The idea of natural rights and freedom. It evolved into the protection of human rights and freedom. Based on these ideas and analysis of peculiarities of the process of the Republic of Lithuania becoming the rule of law, there are justified five stages of Lithuanian society’s legal identity development.

Maleje czytelnictwo książek, prasy, rola doświadczenia. Współczesną zbiorową tożsamość odzwierciedlają teksty elektroniczne. Przejawiają się w nich różne tożsamości: cywilizacyjna, kulturowa, religijna, narodowa, rodzinna, płciowa, zawodowa, artysty i sztuki. Teksty kultury są jednak wyrwane z macierzystych kontekstów. Ulegają recyklingowi. Pośpieszne przeglądanie cyfrowych zasobów ogranicza ich przeżywanie, a media sprowadzają interakcje użytkowników do konwersacyjnych archetypów. Ludzie nie potrafią twórczo uczestniczyć w słabo rozumianych interakcjach. Zbiorowe tożsamości w Sieci strukturalizuje technologia.
The role of readership and experience is declining. Collective identity is reflected by electronic texts. They show different identities: civilizational, cultural, religious, national, family, gender, professional, artistic. Cultural texts, however, are removed from their native contexts and recycled. Fast browsing of digital resources limits emotional experience. Social media limit the interactions of users to only six conversational archetypes. People are unable to function creatively in the poorly understood interactions. The collective identity on the Internet is molded by digital texts.
