One of the most important and most complex research tasks within phraseology and phraseography is the description of the meaning of idioms. Idioms are, as seen from the semantic point of view, especially complicated language units. They contain a semantic added value which results from two aspects: (i) their ambiguity based on feedback between the literal and the lexicalized meaning, (ii) their polylexicality – their semantic derivations can occur on the level of the word group and also concern the individual elements. The aim of the article is to characterize the semantic potential of idioms and to try its explication.

The purpose of the study is to reconstruct the cognitive semantics of the verbal predicates “чудиться”, “почудиться”, taking into account their inner form, and also to suggest a linguo‑cognitive model for explaining polysemy. The object of the study is the different contextual meanings of the verbal predicates “чудиться”, “почудиться” in the contexts of fictional discourse, the subject is cognitive semantics as a repeated structure of cognitive processes reflecting the patterns of understanding and thinking. The article presents a typology of contexts for the functioning of verbal predicates, their different contextual meanings are defined, the semantic dependence of the contextual meaning of the verb word on the semantics of the broader context analyzed, the role of the inner form in the creation of polysemy determined, while a linguo‑cognitive model for explaining polysemy in terms of “gestalt”, “focus”, “background – figure”, “focusing – defocusing” is suggested.

The paper presents the ambiguity phenomena in terms of cognitive categorization and blending processes. The analyses of politicians’ programme speeches, based on Lakoff’s and Langacker’s semantics and Langacker’s grammar research, result in describing the ambiguity phenomena as sender’s or receiver’s mental concepts rather than relating it to linguistic properties of the message. Moreover, a cognitive point of view in the research on ambiguity reveals its multilevelled structure, which stems from the polysemic nature of mental categories and blends.

Ways of Conceptualising Male and Female Genitalia in Spanish and Polish: a Contrastive StudyThe article deals with the reconstruction of the ways of conceptualising male and female genitalia encoded in Spanish and Polish lexicon. In order to carry out our investigation we propose a 5-stage analytical procedure based on the ideas developed previously by Pragglejaz Group in 2007 and by the investigators from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in 2009. We pretend to demonstrate that the metalexicographic analysis applied to cognitive studies enables us to observe some interesting linguistic trends which reflect sociocultural attitudes towards, among others, erotic issues.

Assessing the success of a translated text is one of the controversial topics often discussed in the field of translation studies. The definition of a so-called successful translation is itself controversial. Therefore, for the purpose of this study, the success of a given translation may be defined as transmitting a similar, though rarely identical, semantic frame reference in the Target Language (TL) as was intended by the Source Language (SL) and may be quantified by comparing alternate translations and choosing the one with the highest number of equivalent frame references. One of the factors which could be considered detrimental to the production of a successful translation, as defined above, is the (un)translatability of cultural terms. Cultural terms, defined here as expressions referring to concepts or entities that are unique to a certain culture, are believed to be untranslatable. This paper uses Arabic visual frames referencing the Egyptian garment ǧal-labiy-ya (or ǧilbāb) as an example and argues that (un)translatability can be quantified using semantic frames based on the assumption that all SL terms have multiple frame references, some of which, mostly the ones indicating denotative meaning, have parallels in the TL while some others, mostly the ones indicating connotative meaning, do not. The degree of (un)translatability may, therefore, be quantifiable by observing which TL terms possess a higher rate of similar frame references in SL, which aids in the evaluation of translated texts in terms of relative equivalence and the degree to which the Target Text (TT) audience receives similar information to that received by the Source Text (ST) audience.

The color basic terms are studied from four approaches: linguistic relativism of Gleason & McNeill; linguistic universalism of Berlin & Kay; neurophysiological approach of Kay & McDaniel; and cognitivism of Wierzbicka. Common meaning of chromatic feature forms, according to Coseriu, a two-dimensional, non-correlative, lexical field. From the cognitive approach of Wierzbicka, this field behaves as a multidimensional, hierarchical, non correlative, lexical one. We begin with the hypothesis that if from a physiological point of view there is a hierarchy in the color field, focused on RGB Model, where the chromatic elements have a nuclear place, while the achromatic ones are in the periphery, then, applied to Linguistics, is possible or not to maintain the same isomorphic relationship? Each one of five Spanish color basic terms is accompanied by different tables with the appropriate Chinese terms. When there is a lexical deficit, we turn to translation terms. Finally, we make a percentage calculation among the analyzed lexical terms of both languages, considering descriptive and operative knowledge.

The article is devoted to the main directions of studying emotions in linguistics. The subject of the study are the works of Polish, Russian and Ukrainian linguists, devoted to the description of the verbalisation of emotions. The analysis of works shows that the main linguistic directions in the study of the concepts of emotions are linguocognitivistics and linguoculturology. The main approaches to the semantic description of the verbalisation of emotions can be called semantic, metaphorical and combined. Despite the diversity of vectors of linguistic analysis, each study reconstructs a separate fragment of the general linguistic picture of the world of emotions.

El léxico erótico es un tema bastante recurrente en las investigaciones en torno a la lengua española. No obstante, cabe hacer notar que la mayoría de los trabajos dedicados a su estudio que se han publicado en las últimas décadas tiene carácter lexicográfico, centrándose en la agrupación de una amplia gama de términos relacionados con el sexo y el erotismo. Sorprende la escasez de publicaciones en torno a la semántica de tal vocabulario. Nuestro estudio constituye un intento de llenar esta laguna. La aplicación de las premisas de la teoría de metáfora conceptual de Lakoff y Johnson al estudio de la semántica de 410 expresiones eróticas ha revelado cierta sistematicidad de conceptos metafóricos en los términos con los cuales los españoles idean el acto sexual. Para poder detectar estas metáforas, proponemos una metodología basada en la búsqueda de la motivación visual de sus elaboraciones lingüísticas (si es posible) unida a un análisis minucioso de las definiciones lexicográficas de las unidades examinadas que aparecen en los diccionarios generales de español. En este trabajo presentamos el procedimiento analítico que hemos elaborado, pretendiendo demostrar que es posible objetivar los resultados de las investigaciones que se inscriben en las ciencias cognitivas y recrear el proceso de la (re)construcción del significado codificado en los términos referentes a la esfera erótica.

The Norwegian lexical item akkurat and the Polish akurat: a cognitive semantic analysisThe aim of the article is to demonstrate to what extent the Norwegian akkurat and the Polish akurat show similarities and differences in their conceptual content (meaning). Adopting the perspective of cognitive semantics (CS), as described in Langacker (1987) and Lakoff (1987), I shall try to show that the meanings ascribed to these etymologically and formally related words constitute complex networks of senses, rooted in a prototypical centre in each of the languages under discussion. In addition to this, the findings will be interpreted with reference to the process of pragmaticalization (a language unit’s development of increasing pragmatic functions). Within this theoretical framework I shall demonstrate that subjectification/intersubjectification and pejoration/melioration motivate the main semantic difference between akkurat and akurat. The analysis is based on Norwegian and Polish monolingual corpus data.

The paper presents the results of empirical experimental research on the influence of ambiguity of communication on the message persuasive effect. The results obtained have led, in principle, to the following conclusions regarding cognitive ambiguity phenomena in communication: 1) The higher the message ambiguity means the higher the consensus of the recipients with the communicated content; ambiguity in communication constitutes a specific inhibitor of audience opposition to communicated content. 2) The rule above does not apply to communication in the case of previously polarized attitudes of the audience (ambiguity as a strategy of maintaining the status quo– with its help we will not be convinced until now, but we also do not discourage us). 3) The limitation for the use of ambiguity as a communication strategy calculated on the persuasive effect is the coexistence of messages operating at different levels of ambiguity; The presence of a message that operates the ambiguity of the base level in the message weakens the effect of higher order ambiguity on the agreement reached by the persuasive message. 4) Attitudes shaped by messages operating at a higher level of conceptualization of ambiguity are less resistant to change.

Prepositions are highly polysemous items and for this reason they appear in various semantic and syntactic contexts. As a result, they are very difficult in the process of teaching and learning a foreign language. It is important to know that even very advanced learners of Italian make preposition mistakes (Bagna 2003). Because of this, formal teaching of grammar and explicit correction has been focused on in the present research. The inclusion of explicit grammar teaching (Benucci 1994; Freddi 1999; Balboni 1994, 2012; Bettoni 2009) seems to be essential at advanced levels like C1 and C2 since such levels of proficiency are required for future translators and teachers of Italian as a FL. In this research, Cognitive semantics methodology has been adopted according to the findings by Johnson (1987, 2005) and Lakoff (1987) and Dodge, Lakoff (2005). Image schemas (an inherent part of the methodology) give image schematic answers to the way in which prepositional phrases meaning is built into language. The container schema allows for the interpretation of the unit in, the support and contiguity schema is a tool for interpreting the unit su and the preposition a is modelled by a path schema which highlights a static landmark deprived of shape when the trajector is only localized or an endpoint landmark deprived of shape as well. The same image schemas (seem to be universal perceptive tools valid also in language) provide a basic structure for the Polish equivalents such as: w + loc, na + loc, na + acc, do + gen. Obviously the same conceptualizations in both languages are not frequent. Prepositional landmarks, in fact, reflect different spatial categorizations. The non correspondence of prepositional units in both languages do not mean that the prepositional use is completely unmotivated. This seems motivated with the salience of a particular image schema in a given context. Such clues may result very useful in the process of teaching/learning Italian to Polish speakers as they could sensibilize students to image schematic principles that underlie the semantic interpretation of prepositional units.

The author describes two uncontrolled assumptions in cognitive semantics that researchers have barely discussed within this paradigm. Cognitive semantics shows how language shapes human knowledge and what are the basics of conceptualization in language. However, conceptualization must reflect parts of the manifest image of the world. Since primitive cognitive categories are taken from everyday bodily experience, they must form the world as it appears to be in a common prescientific view. The first dogmatic assumption of cognitive semantics says that concepts of folk psychology and common sense physics precede other concepts and categories. The second assumption presupposes the existence of a fundamental theory that could explain the basic concepts and origins of all human cognition and explain how fundamental and primary conceptualizations appear, how they are reflected in categories of language and why some of them precede others. In this sense, it appears to be a universal theory, a theory of all possible knowledge.

La description faite ici de la conceptualisation de la notion d’amour s’appuie sur l’analyse de proverbes et de citations français et polonais. La méthode cognitive appliquée est basée sur l’identification des Modèles Cognitifs Idéalisés (des concepts métaphoriques et métonymiques). On a isolé six types de domaines sources : la personne, la notion abstraite, l’objet, l’être animé (non humain), l’universel cosmogonique et l’universel culturel. Les ICMs ont été aussi subordonnés à des types particuliers d’universaux sémantiques. Les hommes comprennent l’amour dans des catégories aussi bien axiologiques que physiques. La plupart des Modèles Cognitifs Idéalisés sont communs aux deux langues. Les Polonais conceptualisent l’amour au moyen de tous les universaux sémantiques, tandis que les Français, un peu plus fréquemment que les Polonais comprennent ce sentiment dans les catégories des universaux culturels. Les paradigmes notionnels forment dans certains cas des constructions complexes, dans lesquelles les ICMs hyponymiques sont subordonnés aux modèles hypéronymiques.
The description of the conceptualization of the notion of love is based on the analysis of the Polish and French proverbs and quotes. The linguistic cognitive method applied is based on establishing Idealized Cognitive Models (ICMs), i.e. metaphors and conceptual metonymies. The following six types of source domains grouping individual ICMs have been identified: a person; an abstract notion; an object, a living organism; a cosmogonic universal; and a cultural universal. ICMs have also been assigned to individual types of semantic universals. People comprehend love in terms of diversified categories: both axiological ones as well as physical reactions. Most ICMs occur in both languages. Poles describe love by means of all types of semantic universals, while Frenchmen, more frequently than us Poles, comprehend this emotion in terms of cultural universals. Conceptual paradigms construct in some cases such structures in which more detailed models are assigned to general, generic ICMs.
