    The paper argues that in English on-line news the meanings of the conflict and crisis terms serve as reference points for the construction of a confrontation hierarchy. It is based on the interaction of the relations of force, serving as primes for meaning formation, with three levels of discourse prominence meant to attract, focus and keep the addressee’s attention in headings, headlines and throughout the text respectively. It is found that news stories arrange the units of conflict – crisis hierarchy according to three patterns: zoom-in, offering a detailed textual representation of confrontation with support of the argumentation sections of evidence, explanation or commentary; zoom-out, generalizing on the forces, underlying confrontation construction; multiperspectivation, aimed at a multifaceted representation of conflict – crisis hierarchy.

    Studies on metaphor in political speeches have gained prominence in recent years, especially in Western political contexts where it has been shown that politicians gain the trust, confidence, and ratification of their audience when they speak persuasively (Charteris-Black, 2011, 2014). However, not much research has focused on the use of metaphors by politicians in non-Western (developing) contexts where political language is shaped by many factors that may account for variations in the use of metaphor across cultures. This paper contributes to the rhetoric of metaphor in political discourse by examining the range of (conceptual) metaphors used in the speeches of an African politician – John Mahama of Ghana. Drawing on discourse and cognitive theories of metaphor, I explore Mahama’s use of metaphors in his political speeches, arguing that, as a political speaker, Mahama uses metaphor in a conscious, consistent, and conceptually structured manner that projects his ideological stance on issues of politics and governance. The study reveals that Mahama draws on many conventional metaphors but uses them in creative and unconventional ways to depict culturally relevant situations, and to convey his political ideologies to his audience. The findings in this study do not only contribute towards a better understanding of Mahama’s communicative style, but also foreground the persuasive potential of metaphor for audience engagement in political discourse.

    The paper proposes a model of rhetoric based on the theoretical and methodological framework of constructivist positions on knowledge and discourse. The main claim is that the ideological meaning, and specifi cally of political discourse, can be analyzed from a dual perspective, ‘socio-cognitive’ and 'rhetorical-constructivist’. Such an analysis shows that the construction of meaning is inseparable from the deliberate choice made by the agent in communicative practices. The paper claims that rhetoric should return to its origins as a tool for citizens, and that it could become an important instrument for explaining the conflicts of current social and political discourse.

    Retoryka uzbrojona to walka o wpływ w przestrzeni kognitywnej, czyli przestrzeni naszej świadomości, prowadzona przy pomocy symboli. Jest to namiastka wojny, a nawet nowy sposób prowadzenia wojny. Retoryka uzbrojona wykracza poza perswazję, argumentację, a nawet propagandę w ich tradycyjnych znaczeniach. Główne środki retoryki uzbrojonej to narracja, działanie i obraz. Polityka zawiera coraz więcej elementów wojny informacyjnej, a pojęcie bezpieczeństwa (narodowego i indywidualnego) odnosi się do domeny świadomości. Najwyższą wartością i stawką w tej wojnie jest reputacja i jej pochodna: legitymacja. Zjawiska te stanowią wyzwanie dla edukacji retorycznej i obywatelskiej.
    Weaponized rhetoric designates a contest for influence in cognitive space, conducted through symbols. Weaponized rhetoric is both a substitute for war and a new method of warfare. Weaponized rhetoric goes beyond persuasion, argumentation, or propaganda in their traditional senses. The main tools of weaponized rhetoric are narrative, action, and image. Politics today begins to resemble information warfare, while the notion of security (national, personal) becomes equated with cognitive security. The highest prize and stake in this warfare is reputation and its correlate: legitimation. These developments constitute a challenge to rhetorical (and citizenship) education.

    This paper offers an analysis of ideological discourse from a constructivist perspective, according to which reality is interpreted as the socially constructed product of different agents interacting on an individual, subjective basis in a particular socio-political context, and in relation to a specifi c social action. This theoretical and methodological approach also highlights the importance of the relationship between the fi eld of discourse analysis and those of rhetoric and argumentation (and semiotics, where the discourse is multimodal), and complexity studies. The paper uses data from an ethnographic study of a social collective created a year before the 15M movement: the Cooperativa Integral Catalana (‘Catalan Integral Cooperative’), an eco-social economic initiative based on a new form of self-managed cooperativism.

    The review of the book by Dorota Korwin-Piotrowska gives praise to the hitherto presented concept of scrutinising various types of silence in the context of poetics, rhetoric and cognitive science. Attention is also paid to the fact that, so far, research on modern prose has lacked any studies in that matter. In the first chapters, the reader is offered an opportunity to learn more about contemporary theories, which – for Korwin-Piotrowska – constitute a source of inspiration and undergo a creative transformation. The next chapters, on the other hand, contain research instruments, which are followed by various interpretations of the literary output of such authors as Miron Białoszewski, Hanna Krall, Zbigniew Kruszyński, Marek Kędzierski and Jacek Dukaj. Not only are these analyses evidence of Korwin-Piotrowska’s excellent skills in terms of literary science, but also they prove her exceptional analytical sensitivity.
    W recenzji książki Doroty Korwin-Piotrowskiej doceniono zaprezentowaną tu koncepcję badań kategorii milczenia w perspektywie poetyki, retoryki i kognitywistyki. Zwrócono też uwagę, że dotychczas brakowało badań nad tą kategorią w odniesieniu do prozy współczesnej. Dzięki pierwszym rozdziałom czytelnik może zapoznać się z przeglądem aktualnych teorii, które dla autorki stanowią źródło inspiracji i ulegają twórczemu przekształceniu, w kolejnych – znajdzie instrumentarium badawcze. Przedstawione w dalszych częściach interpretacje twórczości m.in. Mirona Białoszewskiego, Hanny Krall, Zbigniewa Kruszyńskiego, Marka Kędzierskiego czy Jacka Dukaja dowodzą nie tylko świetnego władania warsztatem literaturoznawczym, ale i wyjątkowej wrażliwości analitycznej autorki.
