    Cissus vitiginea L. is a perennial climber with potent medicinal values and used in Indian traditional systems of medicines to cure wounds, diabetes, cardiovascular illness, cancers, particularly bone diseases and arthritis. This plant is kept under rare category in certain parts of India due to its imprudent harvesting from the wild. Assortment of literature on phytochemical studies of this plant shows the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, triterpenoids, steroids, glycosides, coumarin, tannins, sugar, proteins etc. The reported secondary metabolites have been reviewed to possess immense biological activities in living systems. In the present review, we have summarized the information concerning the botanical description, phytochemistry, toxicology, pharmacology and the traditional medicinal uses of C. vitiginea. It has been concluded that this plant has not been well explored for its various biological activities and the alternate methods of propagation to increase its natural population in the wild.

    In the following article, the author will firstly present the definition of himalaism and the area at which it takes place. The second part of the article will take on the subject of the latest achievements of the Polish climbing groups and the individual climbers on the demanding areas of climbing, especially in the Himalayas and the adjacent territories, with the special recognition of winter himalaism. The third part, will focus on the discussion about the ways, in which our achievements can be used in the highest mountains of the world. The special focus will be put on the achievements in winter himalaism and their promotion in our country and abroad. The aim of all types of research is to know a real reality. The three most common and most useful targets are exploration, explanation of the explanation. This test is a thorough analisys of the phenomenon of so-called winter alpinism. The descriptive method was used in the paper in elementary analisys. As a research tool which can generally be any object to explain a given problem to take a specific set of thematic literature from which specific information and research data has been obtained.
    W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono po pierwsze definicję himalaizmu oraz obszar na którym ma on miejsce. Drugą część pracy poświęcono dotychczasowym osiągnięciom polskich grup wspinaczkowych i indywidualnych wspinaczy na trudnych obszarach wspinaczkowych, a w szczególności na terenie Himalajów i Karakorum. Ostatnia, trzecia część pracy poświęcona jest omówieniu sposobu wykorzystania naszych osiągnięć w najwyższych górach świata, a w szczególności osiągnięć w himalaizmie zimowym i ich promocji w kraju i na świecie.

    W artykule podejmuję problematykę emocji przeżywanych przez wspinaczy w trakcie prowadzonej przez nich działalności górskiej i wspinaczkowej. Chodzi o emocje rozpatrywane nie jako cecha osobnicza lub indywidualna skłonność do przeżywania stanów określonego rodzaju, ale o konkretne doznania emocjonalne doświadczane w trakcie podejmowania działania wspinaczkowego. Przedmiotem rozważań są więc emocje, które nieodłącznie temu działaniu towarzyszą, które je zasadniczo określają, wpływając na jego efekt i stanowiąc jedno z ważnych uwarunkowań działania. Dokonuję przeglądu emocji doznawanych przez uczestników sytuacji wspinania, by następnie skoncentrować się na szczególnych emocjach – strachu i lęku – powiązanych bezpośrednio z działaniem wspinaczkowym. Omawiam przeżywany przez wspinających się lęk wysokości, strach przed odpadaniem od skały i przed „lataniem” oraz sposoby ich opanowywania. Nawiązuję także do wartościowanych pozytywnie w środowisku wspinaczkowym cech wspinacza określanych jako „mocna psycha”. Przywołuję również powtarzające się w zebranych materiałach motywy działalności górskiej i wspinaczkowej odwołujące się wyraźnie do emocji. Następnie odwołuję się do realnych zagrożeń fizycznych, które napotykają wspinacze w przestrzeni swojego działania – w górach, w skałkach – i rozważam ich wpływ na stan emocjonalny działających. Przedstawiam także problem tak zwanych „przeszkadzających emocji”, utrudniających prowadzenie aktywności górskiej, traktując jednocześnie sposób radzenia sobie z nimi jako wskaźnik „dojrzewania do bycia w górach” i kształtowania się tożsamości wspinacza. Opisuję taką emocjonalną przemianę na przykładzie analizy dzienników polskiego himalaisty Piotra Morawskiego (1976–2009). Pracę nad emocjami traktuję jako ważny aspekt kształtowania tożsamości wspinaczy i jako stały element aktywności górskiej i wspinaczkowej.
    In the article I rise the problem of emotions experienced by climbers in the situation of climbing and mountaineering. I consider emotions not as an individual feature or tendency to experience some emotional states but as particular sensations experienced during climbing activity. The subject of my interest are emotions that inseparably accompany climbing action, substantially determine this action. These emotions affect the results of climbing activity and remain one of the most important conditions of it. I try to review emotions experienced by participants of climbing situation, and then, I concentrate on particular emotions – anxiety and fear – directly connected with climbing activity. I discuss fear of heights, fear of coming off the wall and fear of “flights,” and the ways of getting control over them. In the climbing world “strong psyche” is perceived as a positive feature of participant. I present motives of climbing activity appealing distinctly to the emotions and discuss impact of real physical threats encountered by climbers in the rock and mountain areas during climbing activity. Bringing up the problem of unwanted and “disturbing emotions” that hamper conducting actions and make climbing more difficult, simultaneously, I treat those emotions as an “indicator” of “getting mature” and becoming a mountaineer. The processes of forming climber’s identity and his/her emotional grow are discussed on the base of diary analysis of Polish mountaineer Piotr Morawski (1976-2009). I treat the process of working on emotions as important aspect of climbers’ identity shaping and essential aspect of climbing and mountaineering activity.

    A field experiment with Actinidia arguta and A. kolomikta cultivars purchased from a commercial nursery was conducted in Skierniewice, central Poland. Both Actinidia arguta and A. kolomikta cultivars were planted in June 2005 at a spacing of 3 x 2.2 m. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of climate conditions on the growth of eight cultivars of small kiwi fruit and to evaluate their usefulness for orchard culture in central Poland. After three years of growth in different climate conditions, including one of the coldest winters (2005/06) during the last years, and also severe late spring frosts (2007), some conclusion can be drawn. Two cultivars of Actinidia kolomikta have shown quite good resistance to winter and spring frosts, but the growth rate of these plants was rather slow. All the cultivars of Actinidia arguta were damaged by frost during the 2005/06 winter due to the snow-cover level, which was rather thick (24 cm). One year later all new shoots and leaves of Actinidia arguta cultivars were damaged completely by late spring frosts, which deleted flowering and fruit setting for at least one year. After three years of growth observations, the growth rate of small kiwi cultivars can be divided into three groups: fast growing with ‘Jumbo’ and ‘Genewa’; moderate growing with ‘Issai’, ‘Ken’s Red’ and ‘Weiki’ – male and female, and slow growing with A. kolomikta cultivars Dr Szymanowski and Sientiabrskaja.
    W Polsce odmiany aktynidii ostrolistnej i a. pstrolistnej należą do grupy silnie rosnących, ozdobnych pnączy przeznaczonych również jako rośliny użytkowe, ale głównie do uprawy amatorskiej. Owoce nazywane są potocznie mini kiwi. Właściwe owoce kiwi dostępne w sklepach należą do odmian aktynidii smakowitej (A. delicjosa) i aktynidii chińskiej (A. sinensis), która w Polsce wymarza podczas surowszych zim i nie owocuje. Aktynidie drobnoowocowe są mało znane, a jest realna możliwość wykorzystania ich również do większych nasadzeń towarowych. Celem niniejszej pracy było przedstawienie siły wzrostu i mrozoodporności 8 odmian należących do dwóch gatunków z rodzaju Actinidia. Silne uszkodzenia mrozowe niemal wszystkich uprawianych odmian odnotowano po zimie 2005/06. Mimo, iż okres ekstremalnie niskich temperatur trwał dość krótko, zaledwie trzy doby. W przypadku pięciu odmian aktynidii ostrolistnej jak Issai, Jumbo, Ken’s Red, Weiki męska i Weiki żeńska zmarzły wszystkie pędy do granicy śniegu. Bardzo odporne na mróz okazały się odmiany aktynidii pstrolistnej: Dr. Szymanowski i Sientiabrskaja. Potwierdziły to także wyniki testu mrożeniowego w warunkach laboratoryjnych. Uszkodzenia mrozowe niektórych odmian pojawiały się już przy temperaturze -26oC. Dla odmian aktynidii najdotkliwsze okazały się przymrozki zanotowane w nocy z 21/22 kwietnia, które spowodowały silne uszkodzenia młodych liści i pędów. U większości odmian aktynidii ostrolistnej zniszczenia blaszek liściowych i pędów wynosiły od 94,3% u odmiany Genewa do 99,3% u odmiany Ken’s Red. W mniejszym stopniu uszkodzona została odmiana Weiki żeńska (87,5%), mniej ucierpiały także odmiany aktynidii pstrolistnej Dr Szymanowski (86%) oraz Sientiabrskaja (49,5%).

    Water Use Efficiency and photosynthetic rate of Fallopia aubertii (L. Henry) Holub., Hedera helix L. and Vitis riparia Michx. grown in various exposures in two site variants: Warsaw city centre vs. suburbs wereanalysed. All studied climbers showed similar photosynthetic intensity in both sites. The strongest effect of the exposition was found for F. aubertii, followed by V. riparia, and shade tolerant H. helix. WUE of studied climbers was relatively low, higher in suburbs than in the centre, due to lower adaptation to different sites. TheWUE of the climbers depended on exposure and the highest scores were obtained for sunny southern and western walls, while the lowest in northern ones. Intrinsic water use efficiency of the studied climbers was higher in the city centre than in the suburbs.
