    Opis:
    This article is based on an analysis of the social field of the art and cultural category designed to described human taste of aestheticism and need to art creativity. The main idea of this paper is attempt of amendment existing applied notions to the description and analyses of art. To this purpose author is using the analogy between the iconoclash notion suggested by Bruno Latour, and proposed by oneself idea of the mediaclash. This phenomenon characterized by a clash of aesthetics and usage of formal means (especially digital technologies, which are the foundations of the very existence of new media). The second proposition is arthick category, used like Clifford Geertz thick description. This concept show a procedure of interpretation that sets the meaning of particular actions within their proper context, which makes it possible to understand human creative actions and it’s connections with social field.

    Tematem niniejszego artykułu są specyficzne oddziaływania wartości uznawanych za społecznie doniosłe (w szczególności religijne) w kontekście pracy zawodowej i związanego z nią kodeksu moralnego postępowania. Tematyka ta zostanie omówiona w odniesieniu do ustaleń badawczych amerykańskiego antropologa i klasyka myśli społecznej, a zarazem wielkiego humanisty, Clifforda Geertza. Warto zaznaczyć, że wieloraka tematyka zagadnień moralności w pracy zawodowej szczególnie w dobie dzisiejszej domaga się socjologicznych oraz antropologicznych analiz. Dzieje się tak dlatego, ponieważ wciąż można zaobserwować nieustanny proces zmiany samej pracy zawodowej, stąd też towarzyszy jej permanentnie stan anomijny, co dla badaczy nauk społecznych oznacza wielkie pole do interpretacji i nowych ustaleń zarówno teoretycznych, jak i empirycznych.

    Thick description, thin description. Cultural way of understanding disability The aim of this article is to present disability from the cultural point of view. Special attention will be paid to Clifford Geertz and his thick description. The phrase thick description is borrowed from Gilbert Ryle. In the classic example one boy’s eye involuntairly twitches while at the same time another boy winks. The physical phenomena are the same but the meaning is different. In understanding disability we have to take into consideration not only the medical, social or biopsychosocial model but cultural context as well.

    Primordialism as object of critique and source of inspiration for sociological studies of nationThe article presents the main assumptions of primordialist paradigm in sociological studies of nation. It has been assumed that most of surveys conducted in the primordial perspective refers to texts written by Edward Shils and Clifford Geertz. Consequently, the theories of these two scholars are presented. Then the critique of primordialist paradigm is reported. Because of inadequacy of some critical assertions, the heuristic values of some primordialist theses will be characterized, namely a phenomenon defined as a primordial consciousness of nation. Prymordializm jako przedmiot krytyki i źródło inspiracji socjologicznych studiów nad narodemW artykule zaprezentowane zostały główne założenia prymordializmu w socjologicznych studiach nad narodem. Przyjęto, iż znaczna część studiów nad narodem realizowana w perspektywie prymordialistycznej odwołuje się do tez i twierdzeń wyłożonych przez Edwarda Shilsa i Clifforda Geertza. W związku z tym przedstawiono teorię narodów ich autorstwa. Następnie zrelacjonowana została krytyka dotycząca prymordializmu.Z uwagi na to, iż część krytyki w opinii autora artykułu jest nieuzasadniona, przedstawiona została odpowiedź na nią przez ukazanie wartościowych heurystycznie tez prymordializmu, nazwanych w tekście świadomościową prymordializacją narodu.

    Artykuł dotyczy problemu granicy między dyscyplinami: antropologią i socjologią, oraz zmian w sposobie rozumienia pojęcia kultury. Główną tezą artykułu jest twierdzenie, że zmiany społeczno-gospodarcze, które dokonały się w drugiej połowie XX wieku, i które wciąż dokonują, prowadzą do redefinicji pojęcia kultury, a tym samym do zacierania się granicy między antropologią i socjologią. Kultura staje się dziś bowiem zagadnieniem społecznym. Nie jest już kwestią odkrywania nowych lądów, tropików i orientu. Kultura – można powiedzieć – stała się dziś czymś zwyczajnym; czymś, co znajduje się jakby pośród zwykłych ludzi, zamieszkujących zwykłe miasta. Artykuł dotyczy teorii kultury Clifforda Geertza, jako antropologa dostrzegającego ową nieostrość granic. Aby zrealizować cel artykułu i potwierdzić postawioną w nim tezę, autorka podzieliła tekst na trzy części. W pierwszej przedstawia – w zarysie – zwroty i zmiany, które dokonały się zarówno w nauce, jak i w sferze społecznej. W drugiej części odnosi się do teorii Geertza i próbuje pokazać, jakie jest jego rozumienie pojęcia kultury. W trzecim punkcie stara się uchwycić przechodzenie kultury w obszar socjologii  i to, jak kultura staje się przedmiotem badań tej dyscypliny. W tym kontekście pojawia się nazwisko Talcotta Parsonsa. 
    The article concerns the problem of the boundary between the disciplines of anthropology and sociology, and changes in the way of understanding the concept of culture. The main thesis of the article the concept of culture. The main thesis of the article is the claim that the socio-economic changes, after the Second War, lead to a redefinition of the concept of culture, and for blurring the boundary between anthropology and sociology. Culture today becomes a social issue. It is no longer a matter of discovering new lands, tropics and orient. Culture has become something ordinary today, something that seems to be among ordinary people, who living in ordinary cities. The subject of the article goes around Clifford Geertz’s theory of culture, because he is an anthropologist who notices this blurring of boundaries. In order to achieve the aim of the article and confirm the thesis put forward in it, the author divided the text into three parts. In the first one she presents – in outline – the turns and changes that took place both in science and in the social sphere. In the second part, she refers to Geertz’s theory and tries to show what his understanding of the concept of culture looks like. In the third point, she tries to grasp this transitioning of culture into the area of sociology. In this context, the name of Talcott Parsons comes in.

    Autor Funkcji i interpretacji podjął się analizy porównawczej teoretycznych założeń Bronisława Malinowskiego i Clifforda Geertza. Punktem wyjścia do tych rozważań była recepcja dorobku polskiego antropologa matrycowana przez „etnograficzną autokreację” Jamesa Clifforda oraz odczytywanie dzieł naukowych badacza kultury trobriandzkiej przez pryzmat opublikowanego pośmiertnie Dziennika w ścisłym znaczeniu tego wyrazu. Propozycje Geertza natomiast często były przedstawiane jako nowatorskie i przełamujące „pozytywistyczne” podejście w antropologii kulturowej. Autor artykułu zwrócił uwagę na to, co inwariantne w dorobku Malinowskiego i Geertza, gdyż warianty teorii antropologicznej w postaci funkcjonalizmu oraz interpretatywizmu zostały uwypuklone w analizach innych naukowców. Dogłębne wczytanie się we Wprowadzenie do Argonautów Zachodniego Pacyfiku oraz wybrane pisma amerykańskiego uczonego pozwoliły na wskazanie licznych podobieństw w ich tekstach naukowych. Buchta zastanawia się: czy w takim razie różnice są tylko powierzchowne i analogie stanowią pokłady głębokiej struktury, natomiast wspólny rdzeń w dorobku obydwu badaczy to paradygmat antropologii kulturowej? Autor Funkcji i interpretacji zgadza się z Ewą Nowicką, która stwierdziła, iż antropologia interpretatywna nie może być traktowana jako osobny, przełomowy nurt, szkoła czy orientacja w naukach o kulturze, co potwierdza zresztą analiza porównawcza metody Malinowskiego i Geertza. Na końcu Buchta zwraca uwagę, iż niniejsze propozycje teoretyczne należy traktować jako idee regulatywne, które z racji rozmachu przekraczają możliwości poznawcze jednostki. Jednak nie oznacza to, że są z tego powodu bezwartościowe. Można czytać je jako świadectwa określonych postaw badawczych i podejścia do przedmiotu badań, bez względu na stopień ich wypełnienia.
    Author of Functions and interpretations carried out a comparative analysis of Malinowski’s and Geertz’s theoretical thesis. As a starting point to this reflection were chosen receptions of Polish anthropologist’s works determined by James Clifford’s “ethnographic autocreation”; as well as viewing Malinowski’s scientific works through the posthumously published Diary in the strict sense of the term. Geertz’s ideas were, whereas, often shown as innovative and different than positivistic approach present in cultural anthropology. Author of the article noticed invariant components in both Malinowski’s and Geertz’s works, since various options of the anthropological theory in terms of functionalism and interpretative method have already been emphasized in analysis of other researchers. A profound insight into the Introduction to Argonauts of the Western Pacific and on a few selected articles of the American anthropologist allowed to reveal many similarities between their studies. Buchta debates if the differences are only superficial and the analogies are set in deep structure, whereas the common core in work of both of the researchers is the cultural anthropology paradigm? Author of Functions and interpretations agrees with Ewa Nowicka, who stated, that interpretative anthropology cannot be treated as separate, breaking through manner, school or orientation in cultural sciences, which is, in fact, confirmed by the comparative analysis of Malinowski’s and Geertz’s methods. Buchta concludes, that those two theoretical statements should be regarded as regulative ideas, which, concerning, their width, exceed cognitive possibilities of an individual. This, however does not make those theories valueless. They can be read as the evidence of a specific research attitudes and approaches to studied subjects, irrespective of the stage of their fulfillment.

    The article is an attempt to reflect upon the way in which some terms coming from modern anthropology (local knowledge, thick description) can be used in studies regarding proper names in the cultural and social perspective. This anthropological way of thinking has been presented in Artur Rejter’s new book “Proper Names in Con/texts of Culture”. The author of the article shows that studying culture through proper names must entail the widening of the variety of scientific methods and strategies and adding those used in social studies and humanities.

    Clifford Geertz remains one of the most influential cultural anthropologists. The author of this text analyses the main premises of Geertz’s interpretive anthropology, which provided a new research horizon for all cultural studies. The author discusses the potential and limitations of Geertz’s approach. It would seem that the cultural relativism postulated by Geertz clashes with the basic ideas of critics of postcolonialism. The ideological context in which Geertz’s anthropology should be read is a concept of multiculturalism, which is yet viewed not as the fulfillment of a relativists’ utopia but as a return to an enlightened concept of culture.

    Głównym celem artykułu było zaprezentowanie wiedzy teoretycznej na temat specyficznego spotkania, jakim jest udział badacza i badanego w badaniach z wykorzystaniem metody biograficznej. Zagadnienie to wydaje się być o tyle ważkie, albowiem posługiwanie się tą metodą narzuca specyficzny charakter zbierania oraz interpretowania danych, ale nade wszystko wyznacza specyficzny charakter relacji, jakie zachodzą pomiędzy bezpośrednimi uczestnikami tego procesu, to znaczy badacza i badanego. W tekście starano się odpowiedzieć na pytania dotyczące tego: Czym jest udział w badaniu dla badacza a czym dla badanego? Na czym polega specyficzność podejścia biograficznego? Na czym polega istota podejścia biograficznego w spotkaniu z drugim, Innym? Jak funkcjonuje badacz i badany w zmieniającej się przestrzeni społecznej? Poszukując odpowiedzi na tak postawione pytania odwołano się do refleksji teoretycznej – zawartej głównie w pracach Clifforda Geertza – w ramach antropologii interpretacyjnej skupionej na znaczeniach, jakie ludzie sami nadają swoim działaniom.
    The main aim of the article is to provide theoretical insight into the specific meeting between the researcher and the researched person in studies using thebiographical method. This issueseems tobeall the moreimportant because the use of this method imposes a special character of data collection and interpretation. But above all, it determines the specific character of relations that take place between the direct participants of this process, i.e. the researcher and the researched person. The author attempts to answer the following questions: What does participation in the study mean for the researcher and what is it for the research participant? What is the specificity of the biographical approach? What is the essence of the biographical approach in the meeting with another person, the Other? How does the researcher and the researched person act in the changing social space? To answer these questions, the author refers to theoretical reflection, contained mainly in the works of Clifford Geertz, within the framework of interpretative anthropology focused on the meanings that people give to their own actions.
