Opis:
The present paper offers a critical analysis of what its authors call a new approach to social class. The analytical framework concerned is based on a large BBC-sponsored Internet survey and co-coauthored by a team of researchers led by Mike Savage. In theoretical terms, the most relevant observation to be made regarding the appproach under examination is its total dependence upon Pierre Bourdieu's concepts and ideas. This concerns first of all his theory of multiple 'capitals', two of which, e.e. social and cultural have been singled out by the exponents of the framework analysed in the paper as the building blocks of their own class theory. In other publications of the present author it has been shown that the purported Bourdesian 'capitals' are not any capitals at all, that they constitute misnomers, or even oxymorons. The consequences of this theoretical misunderstanding, to say the least, are as devastating in the case of Savage et al. as in the case of French thinker. The typology of social classes built upon such shaky grounds is found wanting in many respects; inter alia, such concepts as the middle class and the precariat are being criticised in more detail. Overall, the authors' shameless self-adevertising campaign, their analytic framework contains scarcely any new insights or ideas and mirrors other people's errors and failings instead.

Opis:
The paper offers an ownership-based approach to class, economic ownership being defined in terms of rent. It is also stressed that there is a need for a distinction between a socio-economic and juristic approach to property, the latter being in fact far more common in the social sciences. The theoretical framework laid out in the paper draws on some Marxian ideas, though it goes beyond what the author of "Capital" had explicitly to say on social class. The reader's attention could be drawn to the conceptual innovation in the form of the notions of lumpenclasses and quasi-classes. The former concept refers to the structure of social differentiation pertinent to the unofficial economy, while the latter is concerned with , for the most part, non-working women.

In light of the significant stratification of Polish middle class, the formation of a group of people representing the 'seed' Polish upper class seems to be obvious. This is a group almost totally unrecognized by economic sciences, though representing a very important segment of customers. The difficulties in the recognition of the group are not only the consequence of the lack of developmental analogies to other market economies (almost 60-yearlong break in functioning of this class in Poland), but also its hermetic nature. The paper will also present the major dilemmas encountered by the authoress at the stage of carrying out her research surveys.

This paper argues that the British period drama Downton Abbey, which aired between 2010 and 2015 and encountered worldwide success, uses working class and middle-class female characters to promote the aristocracy and conservative ideas, while hiding behind historical accuracy and seemingly progressive patterns of behaviour. Through a close reading of four female characters, I will demonstrate how the series’ author, Julian Fellowes, uses the show to endorse his own political agenda, as a Conservative member of the House of Lords in the British Parliament.

This article outlines ideas about a people’s history of economics. The goal of such a history is to use economic theory to understand the formation of classes, political projects and historical blocs and history as a history of class struggles instead of the unfolding of economic laws. The article discusses the shortcomings of existing histories of economic thought and peoples’ histories. It suggests a synthesis that offers insights into the production and diffusion of economic ideas and their role in the making and remaking of class- and state relations from industrial capitalism to the present. The last part of the article offers an outline organized around the ideas of Smith, Marx, the Marginalists, Keynes and Hayek. Though using the common big names as entry points to class- and state-formation during different periods of capitalist and imperialist development, the peoples’ history is mainly concerned with the lives, thoughts and struggles of the toiling, primarily invisible, hands performing paid and unpaid work in capitalist centres and peripheries.

This paper presents results of abundance field research, distribution and habitat and phytocoenotic preferences of Trisetum sibiricum on the Gutowo Meadows (Urszulewo Plain, NE Poland), in a locality outside the continuous range of distribution. The species grown in wet, not used meadows, in places overflooded by beavers, partially afforested. The research was carried out in 2013 and the results were compared with analogical data from 2000–2002. Currently a higher abundance of species (circa 1600 tufts), a larger area of the locality (circa 2.5 ha), larger phytosociological spectrum and a larger share of hygrophilous species in species composition of the examined phytocoenoses was revealed. In 2013 a share of Trisetum sibiricum was noted in 12 plant communities from seven classes (Phragmitetea australis, Scheuchzerio-Caricetea nigrae, Bidentetea tripartiti, Molinio-Arrhenatheretea, Artemisietea vulgaris, Alnetea glutinosae and Querco-Fagetea), and in 2000–2002 – only in seven plant communities from three classes (Scheuchzerio-Caricetea nigrae, Molinio-Arrhenatheretea and Artemisietea vulgaris). Formerly the species was listed mainly in phytocoenoses of Angelico-Cirsietum oleracei and currently most often in phytocoenoses of Junco-Molinietum.

Opis:
This article looks at metaphor aptness from the perspective of the class-inclusion model of metaphor comprehension and those models that assume a componential nature for the meanings of concepts. When the metaphor X is a Y is processed, the concept of X is included in a metaphorical class that is represented by Y, which is usually the most typical member of the metaphorical class. Degree of saliency of the defining feature in the vehicle and the extent to which this feature matches a relevant dimension of topic is the key factor in the degree of aptness of the metaphor. Degree of aptness becomes more complex in those metaphors that describe an abstract concept in terms of another concept. These metaphors include X into a metaphorical class through the mediation of those concepts that are associated to the abstract concept. If the associated concepts have a high degree of typicality in the metaphorical class, they could be better mediators for including the abstract concept into the metaphorical class. The variations of abstract concepts across individuals and their dependency on contexts and cultures could explain why such metaphors may have different degrees of aptness for different people.

The article looks at social advancement and its consequences for family members – both the experiences of those who experience social upward mobility and their brothers and sisters reproducing their parents’ class positions. The material was collected with the method of qualitative narrative interview; adults with siblings participated in the study. As the author argues, in class analyses, the emotional aspect is often overlooked, while reflection on the health and mental well-being of individuals and groups often lacks insight into the consequences of the class positions they occupy. Also, reproduction and class mobility experiences can evoke a variety of emotions for individuals. These emotions should not be interpreted only in terms of individual temperament and character. The effect of the analysis is to show the various emotional consequences of social advancement: from pride, indifference to rejection.

The main thrust of the paper could be brought down to the thesis that the concept of middle class is an oxymoron. This is the case because there is a contradiction between the associations pertaining to the adjective part of the term in question and those pertinent to its noun part. “The middle” is a hierarchical term, which fits social stratification rather than class, as class relations generally have a more complex character. The said confusion matters because of some important weaknesses of stratification approaches.

This paper tries to articulate some of the socio-cultural impacts of the globalization induced ICT [Information and Communication Technology] revolution in India from sociological view points. Having perceived the phenomenon within the framework of social stratification, the paper tries to deal with the, (i) emergence of a new class of capitalists and a new class of elite workforce that has come to be known as ICT/ knowledge workers, (along with its own sub-culture). (ii) Further, the paper tries to sociologically analyze the phenomenon of growing class consciousness among the knowledge workers in terms of being class in itself / class for itself as they displayed conscious resistance to unionize themselves. (iii) The paper also analyzes the phenomenon of embourgeoisement among the knowledge workers in terms of their cultural and social capitals. Thus, based on primary as well as secondary source observations, the paper is a study of India’s Techno-Coolie and Cyber-Coolie, as a new class of elite technical workforce, the basis of its identity formation and its emerging sub-culture.

Opis:
The article discusses the descriptions of social class strife included but masked in the plot and characters’ construction in the famous Polish play Wesele(The Wedding) by Stanisław Wyspiański. According to the author of the article, the scenes depicting the wedding customs and party are inherently a façade that attempts to mask class conflicts. The class tensions appear consequently in dialogues throughout the play (especially in its climax) and with regard to several different characters. Their role reversals consist of extrinsic signs, which suggest that they are playing the roles and not actually fulfilling them. Thus, the symbols they use in the play are merely costumes that mask their actual backgrounds, drawing for the readers or audience of Wyspiański’s drama the line between appearance and reality.
Artykuł omawia konflikty klas społecznych ujęte lecz zamaskowane w fabule i kreacjach postaci sztuki Wesele Stanisława Wyspiańskiego.

Opis:
W polskiej socjologii znaleźć można wiele analiz stosunku społeczeństwa polskiego do uchodźców i wyznawców islamu; brakuje w nich jednak pogłębionego, jakościowego uwzględnienia wymiaru klasowego. Artykuł podejmuje problematykę zróżnicowania stosunku do uchodźców wśród osób z klasy ludowej i klasy średniej.
There are several analyses of the attitudes of Polish society towards refugees and Islam believers in Polish sociology; however, it lacks deepened qualitative consideration of its class dimension. The article presents results of the analysis of material collected by the research team of Maciej Gdula who in May and June 2017 carried out biographical and scenario interviews with inhabitants of a small town located in central Poland. In order to preserve anonymity of our interviewees the town was called “Miastko.” The article concerns the problem of diversity of attitudes towards refugees among people from working and middle classed. The material let the author analyse interviewees’ attitudes towards accepting refugees in Poland, their assessment of the European Union’s activities in the refugee crisis and ways of helping refugees and refugees preferred by respondents using analyses of class dispositions and the dynamics of habitus characteristic to working and middle classes. In the article the category of islamophobia is used. Islamophobia is a phenomenon occurring both in the working class and in the middle class, however, class ways of expressing it differ. The article omits the issue of the upper class due to the specifics of the study location. The reluctance of middle class representatives towards refugees is focused on their alleged refusal to accept the rules of host societies, whereas the representatives of working class justify their disagreement with accepting refugees with their reluctance to work and expectations regarding social payments. The biographical method and semi-structured in-depth interviews were applied in the data collection process. Biographical interviews in the analysis are treated as auxiliary material. They were analysed in accordance with the rules of biographical analysis. Semi-structured interviews were coded using the NVivo program and then analysed in a comparative perspective. In addition to class membership, gender and generation dimension were also taken into account.
