Na obszarze rynny jeziora Jasień zlokalizowano cztery stanowiska, dla których wykonano analizę palinologiczną i analizę szczątków Cladocera. Celem badań było odtworzenie przemian środowiska przyrodniczego na tym terenie. Rdzenie, z których pobrano próby do analiz, składały się głównie z osadów typu gytia i torf. Próbki do analiz wykonywano według standardowych procedur. Do obróbki danych liczbowych wykorzystywano program POLPAL. Otrzymane wyniki palinologiczne umożliwiły odtworzenie historii roślinności badanego terenu począwszy od okresu borealnego, a analiza szczątków Cladocera dostarczyła informacji o fazach rozwoju części zbiornika jeziornego Obrowo Duże.
In order to reconstruct the environmental history of the Jasień Lake trough, pollen analysis and an analysis of Cladocera remains have been simultaneously carried out. Sediments for pollen research have been collected in the bay section of the Jasień Lake and in the Obrowo Małe peat bog. Cladocera remains have been sampled in two sites within a peat bog adjacent to the Obrowe Duże Lake. Preparation of samples for both analyses followed standard procedures. Numerical data have been elaborated using the POLPAL software. The results of the palynological study have allowed to decipher vegetation history since the Boreal period. The peat bog of Obrowo Małe began to form at the onset of the Atlantic period. Cladocera remains yielded information about phases of water body evolution in the part of the Obrowo Duże Lake, which subject to silting transformed into a low-level valley bog, and then into a transitional peat bog. Pollen and Cladocera analyses have been carried out on material collected at dissimilar sites, which practically excludes the possibility of correlation of results and allowed one only to reconstruct the major hydrological changes, common for the entire region. In the latest Holocene, in the Jasień Lake trough a trend towards water level decrease is observed due to both climatic and human impact. Further changes included the rise of trophic level in the lake and vegetation succession onto the shallower parts of the lake.

Cladoceran-based paleotemperature estimates for the Younger Dryas for ten sections of paleo-oxbow lakes, valley mires, and lacustrine sediments from central Poland are presented, and their potential usefulness to climatostratigraphy is described. Most of the changes observed in the cladoceran assemblages are responses to climate changes. The cladoceran-based temperature reconstructions reflect cold conditions during the Younger Dryas (YD) and allow a division of this period into two phases: an older colder phase, between 12,800 and 12,000 cal yrs BP, and a younger, warmer phase, between ca. 12,000 and 11,500 cal yrs BP. The geomorphological features of the study sites and local environmental forces are also taken into consideration. The cladoceran-inferred summer temperature estimates from all of the study sites correspond closely with the available climate reconstruction for the YD in central Europe.

Cladoceran remains preserve selectively in lake sediments. Possibly all Cladocera species leave at least some identifiable remains in lake sediments. Exosceletal body parts of families Chydoridae and Bosminidae preserve best but other families are only variably represented in sediments by their outer body parts. Identification of all possible remains helps to achieve more precise palaeolimnological reconstruction of past ecosystems by Cladocera analysis. This article describes, together with photograph and line drawing the subfossil post-abdomen and post-abdominal claw of Ceriodaphnia, previously not widely identified.

Alona protzi is a rare spe cies of Cla do cera, oc cur ring in lake lit to ral through out Europe. How ever, lit tle is known about this ani mal, and so far it has not been in cluded in pro vi sional lists of spe cies found in Fin land. In this short re port we pres ent our find ings of Alona protzi, both re cent and sub fos sil ma te rial, as well as one pre vi ous, un pub lished finding site of the spe cies in Fin land. We found three sub fos sil shells of this spe cies in the bot tom sedi ments of two lakes. In a third lake we found in tact ani mals, an ephip pial fe male and a male, while sam pling stony bot tom of lake lit to ral.

The Ponto-Caspian cladocera Cercopagis pengoi invaded the Baltic Sea in 1992. For the first time it was recorded in the Gulf of Riga and three years later it appeared in the Gulf of Finland. In the summer of 1999 it had been also found in huge numbers in shallow areas (0.5 - 10 m) of the Gulf of Gdańsk.

Cladocera are a group of water animals, which are strongly dependent on environmental conditions. The ratio of planktonie to littoral Cladocera species is a widely used tool in palaeohydrological reconstruction of lakes' water level changes. Interpretation of this ratio is still unclear and requires further evidence. The simplest indicator of water level, which can be used in tracing lake-peat bog transitions, is the presence or absence of Cladocera and the character of its disappearance. In general, two models of Cladocera decline are observed. The first model is characterized by a very abrupt disappearance of all species, whereas the second one. with an intermediate stage, is characterized by domination of specific species. These two models are related to different types of terminal history of the water body. Even after a total disappearance of water in the peat bogs, there were episodes of some pioneer cladoceran species presence, correlated with periods of humid climate.

This pa per pres ents the re sults of fos sil Cladocera anal y sis us ing ma te rial ob tained from seven palaeolakes of the Eemian inter gla cial lo cated in Po land. The main aim of this study was to in ves ti gate the state of pres er va tion and diver sity of spe cies in the Eemian Cladocera. The stud ied Eemian lakes were formed at the end of the Wartanian Gla ciation in tun nel and ket tle holes. They had pre served a con tin u ous re cord of en vi ron men tal changes through out the Eemian inter gla cial, un til the Vistulian Gla ci ation. Cladocera fos sils found in Eemian sed i ments were thin ner and had a more dam aged struc ture than fos sils from the Ho lo cene. Low de gree of fos sil pres er va tion forced to de velop an al terna tive method for prep a ra tion of the fos sils for the mi cro scopic anal y sis. Cladocera spe cies found in the ex am inedpalaeolakes cor re sponded to the pres ent-day spe cies in hab it ing Po land and Cen tral and North ern Eu rope. The changes in species composition resulting from climate changes corresponded to the current geographic distribution of Cladocera. De spite the poor con di tion of the ob tained fos sil re mains, the re sults showed that cladoceran fos sils in sed i ments of palaeolakes may be used in the re con struc tion of en vi ron men tal con di tions from the pe riod pre ced ing the last gla ci ation.

Cladocera com mu ni ties in sur face sed i ments of seven lakes were sam pled from the Med i ter ra nean to north Hun gary. Con duc tiv ity, pH, pri mary ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Cl–, SO4 2–, HCO3 –, CO3 2–) and macrophyte cov er age were measured as con trib uted en vi ron men tal pa ram e ters for the dis tri bu tion of cladoceran com mu ni ties across the lakes. Thirtytwo cladoceran spe cies were found in the seven lakes. The re corded spe cies have wide tol er ance spec tra, and are able to col o nize very dif fer ent kind of hab i tats. The most com mon and abun dant spe cies were Chydorus sphaericus, Alona rectangula and Bosmina longirostris. Lake area, lat i tude, macrophyte cov er age, pH, con duc tiv ity and hard ness were found to be the most de ter mi nant en vi ron men tal vari ables in the dis tri bu tion of cladoceran spe cies. This study revealed that al though the lakes show a clear sep a ra tion in en vi ron men tal pa ram e ters the com po si tion and dis tri bu tion of Cladoceran com mu ni ties dif fer only slightly across the in ves ti gated geo graph ical gra di ent.

Results of stable isotope, Cladocera and pollen analyses of lacustrine sediments from Besiekierz (Central Poland) are presented. The Besiekierz palaeolake is located about 25 km north of Łódź (Central Poland) at 130 m a.s.l. The 4 m thick deposits comprise silty sands and clayey silts, overlain by calcareous gyttja and organic silts and peat. Pollen analysis documents that these deposits accumulated during the Eemian Interglacial and the Early Vistulian. Based on the results of stable isotope analyses, nine isotopic horizons (Is) were defined and characterized, and these enabled reconstruction of both climatic and hydrological changes. A positive trend in δ18O values and constant values of δ 13 suggest gradual climatic warming, while constant values of δ 18O and δ 13C indicate stable conditions and/or a fast rate of sedimentation. The fluctuation of isotopic values in the upper part of the succession probably points to a shallowing of the lake due to sedimentary infill. The subfossil cladoceran fauna in the Besiekierz succession is represented by 11 solely littoral species belonging to 3 families. Four zones of Cladocera development were distinguished. The Besiekierz palaeolake was a shallow reservoir. The initial period of its existence probably saw its greatest depth. The Cladocera species present indicate the initial oligotrophic status of the lake and its subsequent increase in trophic status.We compare the results of the isotopic, cladoceran and published palynological analyses, to distinguish and explain the phases of evolution of the lake.

This pa per gives a de scrip tion of the head shield of Alona protzi, a rare spe cies of Cla do cera (wa ter fleas) whose separated head shield has not yet been de scribed in de tail. Sub fos sil head shields of A. protzi were found in sedi ment cores taken from lakes in Den mark, Swe den, Fin land, Es to nia and Po land. De spite the rar ity of the spe cies this sug gests a wide dis tri bu tion of A. protzi in north ern Europe. The ecol ogy of A. protzi is poorly known. The en vi ron mental spec -trum of the find ing sites was wide and ranged from rela tively nu tri ent poor clear wa ter lakes to eutrophic tur bid wa terlakes, in di cat ing that A. protzi is not nar rowly re stricted. Most of the lakes were, how ever, meso- eutrophic with neu tral to high pH, and with a rela tively low abun dance of sub merged mac ro phytes. How ever, we can not ex clude the pos si bility that A. protzi mainly lives in ground wa ter and is only oc ca sion ally trans ported into lakes.

A new un usual morphotype of Acroperus harpae (Baird, 1834) was found in Lake Mývatn and its neigh bour ing Lake Budlungaflói in Ice land. This form, A. harpae f. multidentata is char ac ter ized by a very large head keel and by 5–9 denticles on the posterovental an gle of the valves in stead of 1–3 com mon for A. harpae. The new form did not dif fer from typ i cal A. harpae in the mor phol ogy of the postabdomen, head pores or any ap pend ages. A study of Lake Mývatn sed i ments rev eled that this form ex isted in the lake for at least two thou sand years.

Opis:
An investigated area is located in the middle reach of the WartaRiver valley. During drillings in the Bór site organic deposits such as detritous calcareous gyttja and calcareous detritous gyttja has been documented in a depth between 14,9 and 16,6 m. The organic deposits are covered by mineral, mostly sandy deposits. The accumulation took place in the small lake formed as an abandoned channel. Palynological analysis led to conclusion that biogenic accumulation began at the end of Wartanian and took place at least to the Eemian Interglacial optimum. Results of palynological, Cladocera and geochemical analysis inform about water level changes and increasing of trophy status of the reservoir. Presence of Mesozoic substratum very close to the palaeolake bottom influenced significantly chemical features of the organic deposits. As Eemian organic deposits are uncommon in the Warta River valley, the Bór site seems important for palaeogeographical reconstructions of the Warta River valley during Eemian Interglacial.

Sub fos sil re mains of a new spe cies of Cla do cera (wa ter fleas) of the fam ily Chy do ri dae in Fin land, Alona wer estschagini Si nev, were found in the sedi ments of four lakes above the treeline in north ern most Fin nish Lap land. The remains were found in sur face sedi ments of three lakes and in early Holo cene sedi ments of one lake where the spe cies was a pio neer which soon dis ap peared. The re mains of A. wer est schagini, ex cept the male postab do men, closely re sem ble Alona gut tata. In Eura sia A. wer est schagini has a wide but patchy dis tri bu tion in cold cli mates, sug gest ing that it is a post gla cial rel ict adapted to cold cli mate and oligo trophic lakes. Re cently it has been found also in Nor way and Kola Pen in sula. The early Holo cene finds in di cate that the spe cies spread to north ern most Fin land af ter the re treat of the Scan di na vian Ice Sheet. Since the spe cies has been found in lakes in very se vere con di tions it may be used as a palaeo lim no logi cal in di ca tor in sedi ment stud ies.

Anal y ses of subfossil cladocerans (Crustacea: Cladocera) and chi rono mids (Diptera: Chironomidae) were ap plied to ex am ine wa ter-level changes in a small and oligotrophic lake in south ern Fin land over the past 2000 years. Ma jor changes in the in ver te brate com mu ni ties oc curred ca. 400 AD on wards when the lit to ral cladoceran Alonella nana started to re place the plank tonic Eubosmina as the dom i nant spe cies and chi rono mids Psectrocladius sordidellus group and Zalutschia zalutschicola in creased. These changes were most likely due to a de creas ing wa ter level and an en larg ing pro por tion of the lit to ral area, pro vid ing suit able veg e ta tive hab i tats, e.g. aquatic bryophytes (mosses), for these taxa. The low er ing wa ter level reached its min i mum just be fore the Me di eval Warm Pe riod, ca. 800–1000 AD, af ter which the lake level rose again and re mained high un til mod ern times. A prom i nent change in the chi rono mid as - sem blages oc curred dur ing the 20th cen tury when Ablabesmyia monilis and Chironomus anthracinus type in creased, pre sum ably due to changes in wa ter chem is try, caused by anthropogenic load of pol lut ants.

This pa per pres ents dis cus sion on the re sults of sub fos sil Cla do cera analy ses from five lakes in Po land (Przedni Staw Lake, Per es pilno Lake, Gooeci¹¿ Lake, Imio³ki- fossil lake and Os trow ite Lake). The Cla do cera are rep re sented in sediments by re mains of plank tonic (Bos mini dae, Daph ni dae) and lit to ral (Chy do ri dae) forms. Cla do ceran as sem blage phases (“ecos tra tigra phy”) were de ter mined on the ba sis of changes in domi nance of in di ca tor spe cies and past ecologi cal con di tions were re con structed. The re sults are be ing dis cussed from the view point of cli mate change and anthro po genic ac tiv ity and their role in the lake evo lu tion. Moreo ver, an at tempt to use the cla do ceran phases for stra tigraphic di vi sion of the Late Gla cial and Holo cene was made. Dur ing the Bøl ling/Al lerød in ter sta dial, dis tin guished on the ba sis of pol len analy sis, Cla do cera in di cated short phase of bad con di tion (dry or cold?), proba bly as the Old Dryas cli mate re sults. The be gin ning of Holo cene is char ac ter ized, in moun tain and low land lakes, by high in -crease in the number of spe cies and speci mens of Cla do cera. This de scribed clear warm ing and marked the bound ary Late Gla cial/Holo cene. It was in di cated that the “ecos tra tigra phy” based on Cla do cera can be use ful for cli ma to stratigra phy, if cli mate was the ma jor fac tor con trol ling the de vel op ment of fresh wa ter lakes.

Rezultaty analizy subfosylnych szczątków wioślarek (Cladocera) z profilu osadów organicznych stanowiska Koźmin Las (dolina Warty, Polska Środkowa) pozwoliły przedstawić rekonstrukcję rozwoju opisywanego zbiornika i odnieść je do ak-tywności fluwialnej Warty, szczególnie w okresie młodszego dryasu, pomiędzy 12 900 i 11 600 cal BP. Wyróżniono dwie fazy rozwoju zbiornika. Stwierdzono, że był to płytki zbiornik, o niestabilnych warunkach hydrologicznych. Prawdopodobną przyczyną fluktuacji był zmienny poziom wód gruntowych, powierzchniowych i rzecznych w dolinie Warty. Zmiany we frekwencji Cladocera skorelowano z aktywnością fluwialną rzeki oraz, w szerszym ujęciu, z warunkami klimatycznymi panującymi w młodszym dryasie.
The sediments from small pond infillings located in the Warta River valley in central Poland was studied by Cladocera analysis in order to examine the response of aquatic ecosystems to environmental changes in the Younger Dryas. Lithological and geochemical records were also used to reconstruct fluvial activity of the Warta River. In the Koźmin Las site development, between ca. 12.900 and 11.600 cal BP, prevailed variable hydrological conditions. Cladocera analysis indicates the presence of shallow pool and partly telmatic conditions. The local processes, such as the influence of the Warta River, habitat modification, macrophyte presence, and eutrophication, were important, but these forces were not only major factors that affect the biota diversity in the Younger Dryas. The observation of changes in the composition and concentration of aquatic communities in the studied pool indicates that the changes also occurred in response to climate changes.

We pres ent the last 500 years of his tory of a high-al ti tude trop i cal lake Lago de la Luna lo cated at Nevado de Toluca crater, Cen tral Mex ico, based on subfossil Cladocera anal y sis. Through the stud ied sed i men tary se quence only five Cladocera spe cies were pres ent. Cladocera com mu nity was dom i nated by lit to ral spe cies (4) and among them one (Ilyocryptus nevadensis) is en demic. The de tailed anal y sis of the sed i ments (ev ery 1 cm) al lowed us to track con tem - po rary cli ma tic and anthropogenic changes. Our re sults showed that Lago de la Luna is a very sen si tive eco sys tem and has strong re sponse to cli ma tic changes. The most re mark able change in the Cladocera com mu nity was ob served between 1683–1780 yr, which was well cor re lated with the Lit tle Ice Age. PCA re sults im plied that mod ern state of the lake Lago de la Luna is very sim i lar to one 400–500 yr ago. Only one pe riod was iden ti fied when hu man im pact was of im por tance. This pe riod seemed to cor re late with changes in the lake eco sys tem due to fish in tro duc tion in the 1950s.

In this study we compared chydorid cladoceran (Chydoridae) taxa and assemblages from sediments of 6 Polish and 6 sq Finnish lakes and investigated if the difference in climate of these two countries can be detected in the cladoceran data. The data were analysed in terms of I) average relative proportions of chydorid taxa during the history of each lake and by 2) redundancy analysis (RDA) to explain the present effect of environmental variables (altitude, area, maximum depth, mean annual temperature, mean summer temperature and length of the growing season) on species abundances. The redundancy analysis (RDA) enabled us to distinguish groups of taxa I) with a high thermal preference 2) associated with small, cold-water lakes and 3) associated with shallow lakes. There are clear differences in the dominant chydorid taxa and in the relative proportions of many other chydorid taxa between the two countries since the end of the last glaciation. Although these differences first of all appear to reflect the climatic difference, the influence of many other environmental factors, controlling the living conditions of particular chydorids have been raised and considered. Further studies with larger data are needed before the role of climate can be reliably separated from other elements of environment.

High res o lu tion stud ies on subfossil Cladocera from three closely lo cated lakes of the Che³m Hills Re gion – Lake S³one, Syczyñskie, and Pniówno, ev i denced a strong zoo plank ton re sponse to the well-known cli ma tic changes of the Late-Gla cial and early-Ho lo cene. The gen eral changes in the cladoceran com mu nity struc ture re sem ble those de - scribed from other Pol ish and Eu ro pean lakes. Cer tain im por tant dif fer ences were iden ti fied, how ever, which can be at trib uted to the pe cu liar ity of the en vi ron men tal con di tions of the re gion, re gard ing: the deep char ac ter of the lakes stud ied al ready in the ini tial phase of their de vel op ment (Older Dryas), an in ten sive eutrophication pro cess in duced by the Alleröd cli mate warm ing with a pe ri od i cal low er ing of the trophic sta tus, and the char ac ter of the Youn ger Dryas cool ing less se vere than in some other re gions. The chro nol ogy of the palaeoenvironmental changes iden ti fied by means of subfossil Cladocera anal y sis was based on the re sults of palaeobotanical anal y sis, and con firmed by ra diocar bon dat ing avail able for two pro files. Tak ing ad van tage of the close lo ca tion of the study sites, their morphometric and geo log i cal sim i lar i ties, and the high res o lu tion of sam pling, an at tempt was made to use cladoceran suc ces sion in or der to es tab lish the strati graphic di vi sion for Lake Pniówno, lack ing palynological and ra dio car bon data.

W Solnikach na Wysoczyźnie Białostockiej (północno-wschodnia Polska) odkryto serię osadów jeziornych reprezentujących interglacjał eemski i wczesny vistulian. Wstępne wyniki badań interdyscyplinarnych (analiza pyłkowa, okrzemkowa i Cladocera, pomiary podatności magnetycznej osadów oraz zawartości izotopów stabilnych tlenu i węgla) wykorzystano do zilustrowania zmian klimatu podczas interglacjału eemskiego. Udokumentowano dwie gwałtowne oscylacje klimatu - pierwsza z ciepłym i bardzo wilgotnym klimatem (?opady) miała miejsce w środkowej części poziomu pyłkowego E5 Carpinus, druga z klimatem suchym i bardzo zimnym - w środkowej części poziomu E7 Pinus.

This study was carried-out to investigate the abundance and diversity of zooplankton in River Shasha, Southwest Nigeria. The zooplankton community constitutes an important component in the faunal composition of the water body. Samples were collected bi-monthly between February 2006 to February 2008, with a mind of capturing various seasons in the period of study, at two sampling stations (Ipetumodu and Edun-abon) established along River Shasha. A total number of 54 zooplankton species were identified, comprising of five classes, namely Rotifera (29 species), Ostracoda (8 species), Arthropoda (5 species), Copepoda (5 species), Protozoa (4 species) and Cladocera (3 species). The most abundant species were Brachionus, Lecane and Keratella recorded the highest distribution among the zooplankton observed during the sampling period. Among the Rotifers, Branchions patulus and Filina opoliensis were found abundant. Holopedium amazonicum and Scapholebris armata were predominant among the Cladoceras. Among the Copepods the dominant species was Ectocyclops phaleratus and Hemicypris ovate and Cypris subglobosa among Ostracoda. Among the Protozoa, Diffugia sp and Vorticella sp were observed. Ceratopogonid sp. was most dominant among Arthropoda. The density of zooplankton population was maximum during dry season (158702 Org/L) and minimum (12402 Org/L) during rainy season due to the different environmental conditions of the water bodies. The overall mean abundance of zooplankton population was in the following order: Rotifera > Protozoan > Arthropoda > Copepoda > Cladocera >Ostracoda. The few species of Zooplankton identified in River Shasha may reflect the moderate level of limit nutrient and there is need for regular monitoring of the waterbody to avoid the excess input of nutrients from domestic and agricultural waste that could lead to eutrophication.

The pres ent work is a part of the de vel op ment of a method which uses the rela tive pro por tions of asexu ally and sexually re pro duc ing chy do rid fe males to re con struct the length of the open- water sea son. Sur face sedi ments (5 cm) of Lake Ai tajärvi, north ern Fin nish Lap land, were ex am ined for mod ern and re cent pro por tions of chy do rid cla do ceran ephip pia in sub arc tic cli mate near the pine limit. The to tal chy do rid ephip pium pro por tions (TCE) were stead ily 9.5–9.7% in the Ai tajärvi sedi ment but de clined to 8.4% in the up per most sam ple. The re sult was com pared with the sur face sedi ment TCE from four lakes in south ern Fin land where it var ied be tween 3–6%. It was also com pared with the TCE from two lakes in north ern most Fin nish Lap land above the treeline in very se vere cli mate, where it was 26–30%. These very high val ues sug gest that there might be a thresh old in cli mate con di tions be tween Ai tajärvi and the two north ern most lakes that al ters the re pro duc tion of chy do rids to wards an even more im por tant role of sex ual repro duc tion.

W pracy przedstawiono rekonstrukcję zmian ekologicznych zapisanych w osadach śródpolnego stawu olęderskiego położonego na płaskiej, lewobrzeżnej terasie zalewowej Wisły w jej widłach z lewobrzeżnym dopływem – Zagożdżonką (Dolina Środkowej Wisły, Polska Centralna). Na podstawie kartograficznych materiałów archiwalnych  rozpoznano warunki hydrologiczne i ich zmiany wywołane rozbudową infrastruktury hydrotechnicznej od początku XX wieku. Wysokorozdzielcze analizy osadów biogenicznych pobranych ze stawu dały podstawy do wyznaczenia reakcji badanego obiektu na najważniejsze zmiany hydrologiczne zachodzące w tej części Doliny Środkowej Wisły, czyli obwałowanie rzek oraz pojawiające się okresowo zdarzenia ekstremalne w postaci przerwania wałów i zalewu wodami powodziowymi. Na podstawie badań paleośrodowiskowych, obejmujących: analizę subfosylnych szczątków wioślarek oraz wybranych mikrofosyliów pozapyłkowych odtworzono zmiany ekologiczne w obrębie zbiornika. Następnie wyniki te korelowano z fazami rozbudowy obwałowań przeciwpowodziowych oraz epizodami zalewów. Uzyskane dane wskazują na wyraźny wpływ obwałowania Wisły na zmianę warunków ekologicznych badanego obiektu.
 The study attempts to reconstruct the ecological changes recorded in the sediments of a small Olęder pond located on a flat, left-bank floodplain terrace of the Vistula River at a riverbank embraced by the Vistula and its left-bank tributary, the Zagożdżonka River. Archival cartographic materials were used to identify hydrological conditions and their changes caused by the expansion of the hydrotechnical infrastructure since the early 20th century. High-resolution analyses of biogenic sediments collected from the pond allowed the pivotal hydrological changes taking place in this part of the Middle Vistula Valley to be identified. Ecological changes have been reconstructed using palaeoenvironmental analyses, fossil remains of Cladocera, and selected microfossils. Then, these results were correlated with the stages of flood embankments expansion. The conclusions from the study show that the river embankments had a significant impact on changes in ecological conditions in the studied pond.

The re sults of anal y sis of Cladocera oc cur rence in lac us trine sed i ments from the Kub³owo site have been pre sented. Lac us trine and peat de pos its found there have been pre vi ously an a lyzed for pol len con tent (depth of 11.1–3.8 m) and rep re sent a lon gest con tin u ous Eemian–Vistulian suc ces sion in cen tral Po land (Ro man and Balwierz, 2010). Cladocera anal y sis was car ried out on 25 sam ples from the depth of 9.20–10.5 m of an Eemian age sec tion. The sec tion con - sists of fine or ganic sand, silt with or ganic mat ter and gyttja. Iden ti fied were 19 spe cies of subfossil Cladocera and five zones of fauna de vel op ment were dis tin guished. In the early and mid-Eemian low fre quency zoo plank ton in the palaeolake has been found. Best con di tions for zoo plank ton de vel op ment oc curred in the late Eemian (R PAZ E6, E7). At the end of the Eemian a sig nif i cant change of cli mate in a de te ri o ra tion of en vi ron men tal con di tions and de creased pres ence of zoo plank ton has been noted. Cladocera re sults and the pol len data en able a re con struc tion of the cli ma tic and en vi ron men tal changes in the Kub³owo palaeolake.

This pa per pres ents de vel op ment of the paleolake Starowlany ex ist ing in the Eemian Inter gla cial (MIS 5e) in north - east ern Po land. The lake his tory is based on Cladocera anal y sis. The sed i ments stud ied filled a south ern part of a tun nel val ley formed dur ing the Warta Gla ci ation. The cor ing was car ried out with a geo log i cal drill ing and con sti tuted a part of the frame work aimed at pre par ing the Sokó³ka sheet for the De tailed Geo - log i cal Map of Po land in scale 1:50 000. The core was 7 m long. Peaty silt, peats and or ganic silt were pres ent at the depth of 4.0–6.6 m, un der deluvial sands, tills and silt. Or ganic se ries was over lain by a clayey silt with no gla cial cover. Cladocera anal y sis was con ducted with 20 sam ples from a depth in ter val 6.6–4.1 m. Re mains of 17 spe cies of Cladocera were found, rep re sent ing the fam i lies: Chydoridae, Sididae and Bosminidae. A vast ma jor ity of them were the lit to ral spe cies. In the paleolake Starowlany four de vel op ment zones were dis tin guished that re flected changes as re gards tem per a ture, trophic lev els and changes of wa ter level in the lake. The paleolake ex isted from the early un til the mid dle Eemian. The high est wa ter level and the most fa vor able con di tions for zoo plank ton de vel op ment oc curred in zones SCZ I and II. The high est trophic level took place in SCZ III (mid dle Eemian). In the late Eemian the wa ter level dropped and the paleolake was trans formed into a wet land. At cer tain points, the higher wa ter level en abled ex is - tence of a few Cladocera spe cies. The rea sons for dis ap pear ance of the paleolake Starowlany in cluded a lo cal de crease in ground wa ter lev els as well as morphometric and geo log i cal char ac ter is tics of the lake.

This study examined the influence of ferric and aluminium coagulants (PIX 113 and PAX 18) and ferrous sulphate, used for lake restoration, on growth and mortality of cladocerans Daphnia magna Straus. We observed that addition of these coagulants in concentrations comparable to those used in various restored lakes reduced significantly the increase of Daphnia biomass comparing to the results obtained in the samples without coagulants. This phenomenon was directly proportional to the coagulant concentration. Ferrous sulphate turns out to have been the most toxic compound, while PAX 18 was the less harmful. Ferric coagulants also caused crustacean mortality ranging from 4 to 36%.
Badano wpływ koagulantów żelazowych i glinowych (PIX 113 i PAX 18) oraz siarczanu żelaza II, używanych do rekultywacji jezior, na wzrost i śmiertelność wioślarki Daphnia magna Straus. Stwierdzono, że dodanie do wody koagulantów w stężeniach porównywalnych ze stosowanymi na jeziorach rekultywowanych powoduje istotny spadek przyrostu biomasy Daphnia w stosunku do wyników otrzymywanych w próbach bez koagulantów. Zjawisko to jest wprost proporcjonalne do stężenia koagulantu. Najbardziej toksyczny okazał się siarczan żelaza II, najmniej – PAX 18. Obecność koagulantów żelazowych powoduje również śmiertelność skorupiaków na poziomie od 4% do 36%.

The ob jec tive of this study was the rec og ni tion and re con struc tion of the or i gin of two high al ti tude lakes and the ecolog i cal con di tions of their early ex is tence based on subfossil Cladocera and chem i cal anal y ses. The study fo cused on the old est lac us trine sed i ments from Lake Sol and Lake Luna, lo cated in the crater of Vol cano Nevado de Toluca (Cen tral Mex ico). The Nevado de Toluca crater de vel oped ap prox i mately 12 ka yr BP. Ac cord ing to the lit er a ture, the vol cano was last ac tive ap prox i mately 3.3 ka yr BP, and the lakes de vel oped af ter that erup tion. The re mains of nine Cladocera spe cies were found in the bot tom sed i ments of both lakes. The most dom i nant taxa were two en demic lit toral spe cies: Alona manueli and Iliocryptus nevadensis. The to tal fre quency of Cladocera spec i mens in both of the sed iment cores was very low. No Cladocera re mains were re corded in the sed i ment layer at depths be tween 123–103 m from Lake Luna. The re sults of the lithological and geo chem i cal anal y ses showed that this sed i ment layer was com posed of allochthonous ma te rial, prob a bly orig i nat ing from slid down from the vol ca nic cone. This was sug gested by the con - tent of sil ica (up to 13%), iron (up to 12%), and ti ta nium (up to 4%). The Cladocera re mains re corded in the bot tom sed i - ments sug gested that both res er voirs de vel oped as fresh wa ter lakes at the be gin ning of the sed i men ta tion. The cal i brated ra dio car bon dates ob tained for the bot tom sam ples were 4040 to 3990 yr BP for Lake Luna (129 cm) and 4485 to 4485 yr BP for Lake Sol (89 cm). The ob tained ages were older than the dates of the last erup tion, which oc curred ap prox i mately 3300 yr BP. This re sult was likely re lated to the type of ra dio car bon dated ma te ri als (charcoals).

Spatial distribution, density, biomass, population structure, predation effects, and the influence of abiotic environmental characteristics (salinity, water temperature, transparency, and depth) on a population of the Ponto-Caspian invasive cladoceran Cercopagis pengoi (Ostroumov, 1891) were studied in the Gulf of Finland and the open Baltic Sea (August 1999 and 2004). In our study in 1999, this species was first recorded in plankton of open south–eastern Baltic waters. The age and sexual structure of the C. pengoi population were interrelated with population density. The strongest impact of C. pengoi predation on the pelagic community in the Gulf of Finland was registered at the stations where the percentage of C. pengoi in the total zooplankton biomass was the highest. The calculated impact values of C. pengoi exceeded those registered a decade ago, during the first years after Cercopagis had invaded the eastern Gulf of Finland.

This pa per fo cuses on the use ful ness of a palaeolimnological method called the joint algological and zoo log i cal anal ysis. The joint algo-zoo log i cal anal y sis in volves count ing all iden ti fi able re mains of the main al gae groups (Bacillariophyta, Cyanophyta, Desmidiales, other Chlorophyta, Trachelomonas sp.) and in ver te brate groups (Cladocera, Ostracoda, Chironomidae, Chaoborus sp., and other in sects, Turbellaria, Bryozoa, Spongia and Testacida) in vol u met ric sam ples. We pres ent re sults from re cent sed i ments of Lake Glubokoe (Mos cow re gion, Rus sia) as an ex am ple of the ap pli ca tion of this method. We re con struct the struc ture of phytoplankton, zoo plank ton and zoobenthos com mu ni ties and their dy nam ics over the last 25 years. Our re sults sup port the va lid ity of this method in the re con struc tion of the struc ture of phyto- and zoo plank ton com mu ni ties and their dy nam ics, in for ma tion that may be lost when car ry ing out sep a rate anal y ses for in di vid ual groups. Sim plic ity is an other ad van tage of this meth od ol ogy.

W artykule przedyskutowano zagadnienie wpływu rzeźby terenu i budowy geologicznej dużej doliny rzecznej na jakość materiału zawartego w dwóch rdzeniach z utworami organogenicznymi. Naświetlono położenie obu badanych stanowisk, scharakteryzowano rzeźbę mezoregionu fizycznogeograficznego, w którym prowadzono badania oraz geomorfologię najbliższego otoczenia badanych stanowisk, a także bliżej omówiono warunki geologiczne. Przedstawiono sekwencje zmian subfosylnych faun Cladocera w obu badanych stanowiskach i podano interpretacje uzyskanego zapisu ich przemian. Dodatkowo uwzględniono wyniki analiz pięciu wybranych parametrów fizykochemicznych badanych utworów organicznych, jak również zinterpretowano uzyskane dane. W podsumowaniu stwierdzono, że lokalizacja badanych rdzeni w dolinach dużych rzek może mieć istotny wpływ na jakość materiału poddawanego analizom, co finalnie rzutuje na wnioskowanie i wiarygodność czynionych rekonstrukcji zmian środowiskowych i narastającej antropopresji. 
The article discusses the impact of the relief and geological structure of a large river valley on the quality of material in two cores of organic deposits. The location of both sites was highlighted, the relief of the physicographical mesoregion in which the research was carried out and the geomorphology of the immediate surroundings of the sites were characterised, and geological conditions were discussed in more detail. Sequences of changes in Cladocera subfossil fauna at both sites were presented and the obtained record of their transformations was interpreted. Additionally, the results of analyses of five selected physicochemi-cal parameters of the tested organic compositions were considered, and the obtained data were interpreted. It was concluded that the location of the studied cores in the valleys of large rivers had a significant impact on the quality of material analysed, which ultimately affects the certainty with which environmental changes and increasing human impact can be inferred and the reliability with which they can be reconstructed.

Two sections of sediment from small oxbow-lake infillings located in different river valleys in central Poland were studied by cladoceran analysis in order to examine the response of aquatic ecosystems to the Younger Dryas. Lithological and geochemical records, as well as chydorid (Chydoridae) ephippia analysis were also used to reconstruct Younger Dryas climate trends. A high concentration of cladocerans, as well as the presence of Cladocera taxa preferring warmer water, was found. It is likely that local processes in the oxbow lakes were important, because the presence of warm-preferring taxa was also related to their habitats and their development. Yet local environmental forces, such as the influence of the rivers, habitat modification, macrophyte abundance, and eutrophication, were not only major factors to affect the Cladocera diversity in the Younger Dryas. The observation of changes in the composition and concentration of Cladocera in oxbow-lake infillings indicates that most of the changes occurred in response to climate changes.
