Opis:
For about ten years now people in NATO member states have, on a daily basis, been confronted with the faltering attempts by their troops to create a semblance of stability in Afghanistan. It is now widely recognized that Afghanistan has become an intractable international problem. This article, however, focuses on previous attempts to impose solutions. Beginning in the late 1970s and continuing throughout the 1980s, the two Cold War superpowers, the USSR and the USA, intervened in Afghanistan’s affairs. In this article the legality, under international law, of those efforts is examined. This requires an extensive analysis of international law as applicable to external interventions in civil wars. It will be demonstrated that neither the USSR’s invasion of Afghanistan, nor the USA’s massive support of the Afghan rebels, was reconcilable with international law. Considering the fact that these ill-advised interventions in Afghanistan backfired on both superpowers, they constitute a good object lesson to demonstrate that the prohibition of external interventions in civil wars not only reflects what international law demands, but is also simple common sense. Recent interventions in Bahrain and Libya are also briefly examined as to their legality, and this examination includes projections whether the unsatisfactory results of the Afghanistan interventions will be replicated there.

Opis:
The paper addresses the role which national attitudes play in terrorist threat perception and in the choice of specific counterterrorism strategies. Study 1 shows that participants higher on nationalism tend to perceive the threat of terrorism as more serious than participants lower on nationalism. Moreover, we found that nationalism mediated the relationship between the perceived terrorist threat and the support for tough domestic policies, even at the expense of considerable limitation of civil liberties. Study 2 confirms the link between the perceived terrorism threat and the support for suspension of civil liberties. Nevertheless, when terrorism was seen in terms of crime rather than in terms of war, the mediating role of nationalism disappeared. The results contribute to a better understanding of the process whereby the perception of one’s own national group and the perception of one’s own nation-state translate into specific reactions triggered by external threats.

Opis:
Contribution to the history of the 58th New York Volunteers Regiment – Polish Legion Recently we may witness, both in Poland and in other countries of Central Europe, a growing interest in the American military history, especially in the American Civil War. A lot of people start asking questions about Polish participation in this bloody conflict that torn the American nation apart. Nations such as the Poles or the Irish, who in the 19th century were deprived of their own countries, were also a reservoir of conscripts for nearly every army of that period. Although the fates of the Irish Civil War veterans have extensive literature, the stories of the Polish veterans are still waiting to betold. This article focuses on three letters written by general Wladimir Krzyzanowski, c.o. of the 58th New York Volunteers Regiment (a.k.a. Polish Legion) found in the archives of the Polish Mission at the Orchard Lake Schools, Michigan. The letters (previously not recognized by Polish historians) are valuable documents showing the mechanism of promotions in the Union Army during the Civil War. They are also a primary source for the prosopography of the Polish ACW veterans. Thanks to the New York State Regiments rosters for the period of the Civil War as well as other sources we may trace the course of duty of these soldiers, try to determine their predecessors and successors. These letters are a glimpse into the ordinary life of the soldiers of that period.

Opis:
Until today Rwanda had been perceived first of all, as a country where during the short period; from 7 April to 2 July 1994, 800.000 to 1.000.000 people were killed. The massacre exterminated about 80 per cent of population of the Tutsi tribe. This genocide was the tragic end of more then a thirty year long timeline a violence. This period started in 1962 with the independence of Rwanda. The goal of this article is to present some of the transforming aspects in Rwanda during the last 15 years. The article revealed problems caused by economical development and social transformation. The article is also concerned with fixing responsibility for prosecuting the leaders and organizers of the genocide. Now, 15 years after the civil war Rwanda is a safe, politically stable country, more and more interesting for foreign investors. But, there still exist corruption, lack freedom of speech and unsolved ethnical problems.

American Civil War, war crimes
Opis:
The Civil War started on Friday, 12 April 1861 with an attack of the Confederate artillery on federal Fort Sumter (Charleston, South Carolina). The conflict ended on 9 April 1865 as a result of the surrender of the main army of the South under General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House. It was a total war. Almost 4 million men were mobilised on both sides of the conflict. In the four years of warfare almost 620,000 human lives were lost (more than in all other wars conducted by the US put together). During the Civil War, prisoners of war were imprisoned in at least 223 camps. The majority of them were temporary. On the other hand, more than 90% of prisoners of war were detained in the twenty biggest camps and the highest numbers of deaths were recorded there. In this article I present cases of: war crimes committed on prisoners of war (the Fort Pillow Massacre, Kinston Massacre, etc.) and reprisals against them (Privateers Case, Kilpatrick- -Dahlgren Raid) and taking hostages (Corbin-McGraw Case, Immortal Six Hundred).

Opis:
The article focuses on the phenomenon of historical memory in Spain and the proces of its recovery. The author chose cinema as a medium for passing memory and presented three movies, that refer to the period of Spanish Civil War and Franco’s regime: ¡Ay, Carmela! by Carlos Saura, La hora de los valientes by Antonio Mercero and La hora de los valientes by José Luís Cuerda. A characteristic feature of those films is nostalgia for the lost paradise embodied by the Second Republic and repugnance for Franco’s regime. They also reflect dominant conviction about Spain divided into two opposing worlds where communication is impossible. There is a clear tendency to divide the memory and history in Spain into black and white and people into just and unjust depending on their attitude towards the regime of Franco. We can observe that especially one memory in Spanish cinema is highlighted – the memory of the republicans

Opis:
This article describes Yasmina Khadra’s autobiographical work composed of two books: "L’écrivain" and "L’imposture des mots" and its reception in France. The main purpose of this study was to establish the literary genre of these books, which implies determining whether Khandra’s work represents an autobiography or an autofiction with reference to P. Lejeune’s and V. Colonna’s theoretical studies. The dividing line between two genres in Khandra’s works reflects his inner split between being either a solder or a writer. The presentation will also help to understand the controversy resulting from Khandra’s participation in Algerian civil war. Moreover the analysis is related to modern Algerian history.
