Opis:
The article deals with t he linguistic and aesthetic principles of characters’ understanding of the Christian values in the texts of Vasyl Stefanyk’s novels. The main constants of language and thinking, which reproduce Pokuttian country folkideas concerning following the Christian ethics and morality, have been described. In the worldview of the peasants, depicted by Vasyl Stefanyk, elements of pagan belief, customarylaw, and mythological perception of the image of the world have been refl ected. The author’s position on the ethical norms of the characters is not refl ected directly, but through the reference to living conditions, their psychological self-consciousness. The texts of Vasyl Stefanyk contain a positive assessment of such features of the peasants as benevolence, truthfulness, fear of sin, faith in God.

Przedmiotem artykułu są postawy moralne przyjmowane przez chrześcijańskich liderów biznesu w Polsce. W podjętym badaniu skoncentrowano się na jednym z kluczowych komponentów postawy, który stanowią różnorakie procesy motywacyjne. Postawiono następujące pytanie badawcze: jakie są religijne i moralne motywy postaw przyjmowanych przez liderów biznesu w Polsce wobec wyzwań zawodowych? Centralna teza studium zawiera się w stwierdzeniu, że w Polsce istnieją przedsiębiorczy chrześcijanie, którzy pomimo niezwykle trudnego wyzwania zawodowego, jakim jest pogodzenie celów biznesowych i religijno-moralnych, chcą postępować w harmonijny sposób i swoim życiem dają świadectwo, że możliwe jest – dzięki łasce Bożej − przezwyciężenie pokusy prowadzenia „podzielonego życia”. Odpowiedź na sformułowane pytanie badawcze uzyskano poprzez przegląd i analizę treści wybranych wypowiedzi chrześcijańskich liderów biznesu w Polsce, zawartych w świadectwach zamieszczonych w materiałach z konferencji zorganizowanych w latach 2011-2012 przez Uniwersytet Papieski Jana Pawła II w Krakowie oraz Duszpasterstwo Przedsiębiorców i Pracodawców „Talent”. Drugie źródło stanowi raport zawierający odpowiedzi z internetowej ankiety przeprowadzonej w dniach 9-20.09.2011 przez Duszpasterstwo „Talent” (na pytania odpowiedziały 64 osoby). Autor w swoich analizach skupił się na treściach wypowiedzi tych liderów biznesu w Polsce, którzy w sposób jednoznaczny odwoływali się do wyznawanej wiary chrześcijańskiej, ukazując jej pozytywny wpływ na ich życie osobiste i zawodowe. Stąd artykuł należy traktować jedynie jako przyczynek naukowy do dalszych pogłębionych i szerszych badań tej grupy zawodowej. Dokonane studium pozwala stwierdzić, że w polskim świecie biznesu są osoby, dla których obok efektywności gospodarczej (co jest niepodważalnym sensem biznesu), ważne są również cele duchowe, tj. zbawienie wieczne, pełnienie woli Bożej, oddawanie chwały Bogu, uświęcenie czasu, a jednocześnie realizowanie takich wartości moralnych, jak: troska o czyste sumienie, zaufanie, odpowiedzialność, uczciwość, poszanowanie godności pracowników (mimo ich ludzkiej skłonności do popełniania zła), zachęcanie ich do rozwoju, radość, równowaga między życiem zawodowym i rodzinnym.
The subject of the article are the moral attitudes assumed by Christian business leaders in Poland. The study is focused on one of the key components of the attitude, that is the various motivation processes. The following research question was asked: What are the religious and moral motives for the attitudes assumed by business leaders towards professional challenges? The central thesis of the work is contained in the statement that in Poland there are enterprising Christians who, despite the unusually difficult professional challenge, which is reconciling business and religious-moral aims, want to behave in a harmonious way and with their lives they bear witness that it is possible – thanks to God's grace – to overcome the temptation of living „a divided life”. The answer to the study question was obtained by reviewing and analyzing the contents of selected responses given by Christian business leaders in Poland that were contained in testimonies published as part of minutes of conferences organized by the John Paul II Pontifical University of Krakow and the „Talent” Pastorate for Entrepreneurs and Employers. The other source was the report containing responses to the Internet questionnaire drawn up by the „Talent” Pastorate, that were given on 9-20 September 2011 (64 respondents answered the questions). In his analyses the author focused on the contents of the statements given by those business leaders in Poland who unambiguously referred to the Christian faith they profess, showing its positive influence on their personal and professional life. Hence the article should only be treated as a contribution to further deepened and broadened studies of this professional group. The study that has been made allows drawing the conclusion that in the Polish world of business there are people for whom besides economic efficiency (which is undoubtedly the aim of business) also spiritual aims are important, that is, eternal salvation, fulfilling God’s will, praising God, sanctifying the time; and at the same time they attempt to put into effect such moral values as: caring for a clear conscience, trust, responsibility, honesty, respecting the employees' dignity (despite their human inclination to do evil), encouraging others to develop, joy, a balance between the professional and the family life.

The aim of the article is to indicate and describe the normative assumptions of the professional ethics of social entrepreneurs. The innovative nature of the proposed concept consists in taking into consideration the perspective of Christian personalist ethics. It is a theory of morality which includes considerations for the biblical and theological view of man, emphasizing above all their personal dignity. Referring to the principal axioms of this ethical doctrine allows for a presentation of a proposal of ethical principles and moral virtues – adequate to the mission, tasks, and vocation of social entrepreneurs. The article discusses the following issues: the essence of Christian personalist ethics, the mission and tasks of social entrepreneurs, the motivation and vocation of social entrepreneurs, ethical aspects of leadership in social enterprises, as well as the ethical principles and moral virtues of social entrepreneurs. A methodology characteristic of normative philosophical ethics and moral theology was applied. The results of the analysis of the methodically selected literature on the subject were processed by means of conceptual work, which allowed us to describe the professional ethics of social entrepreneurs from the point of view of Christian personalist ethics. Christian personalist ethics makes a valuable and original contribution to the description of the normative determinants of social entrepreneurship. The analysis of the mission and tasks of social entrepreneurs shows that they create social structures and processes that affirm the dignity of marginalized people and restore their capacity to participate in social and economic life.

The article draws attention to the causes of the tendency to marginalize the common good and the problems of raising the quality of valuable life in a world subordinated to individuals maximizing self-interest quantifiable in market terms. The author calls for attention to the need to respect those spiritual determinants of human capital modernization that shape the will to act for integrated development. The analysis is reduced to pointing out the importance of the axiological deposit of the Christian religion and explaining why this deposit is consistent with an orientation toward integrated development.

There is an ongoing investigation by scholars of ethics and economics into whether human decision making and the resultant acts should be guided by rules and procedures or by judgment and discretion. Although each of these modes offers advantages and disadvantages to decision makers, they are by no means neutral in their effect on professional development. The paper presents an in-depth view of discretionary decisions using an Aristotelian-Thomistic framework. This is the first of the series of papers which focus on the application of realistic philosophical principles to ethical professional behaviour and decision making in daily practice. Results indicate that classical philosophical theories which use virtues and truth as indispensable components still may give rise to desirable and moral conduct among individuals who apply them.

John Paul II’s encyclical Veritatis Splendor continues to proffer a dynamic and relevant contribution to the ethical discourse surrounding just peacemaking. Concerning the human phenomena of organized violent conflict, this article explores the textual and philosophical resources advocating restraint and recognition within Veritatis Splendor. It investigates how these two concepts might be understood within an integrative moral framework of freedom and truth, and how they locate intrinsic meaning within a variety of cultural contexts. Moreover, this article demonstrate how these two faith-informed concepts, espoused within the main conceptual tenets of the encyclical, might be harnessed in a more deliberate way in the field of moral philosophy to help facilitate more inclusive and germane strategies for normative judgments in the praxis of just peacemaking.

Autorka ukazuje, w jaki sposób w perspektywie czasowej zmieniało się miejsce chrześcijaństwa w programach nauczania szwedzkiej szkoły podstawowej. Przedstawiona analiza wskazuje, że przedmiot religia z katechezy Lutra stał się nauką o religiach światowych i lekcjami o problematyce etycznej. O charakterze przedmiotu i jego treściach decydować zdaje się nie tylko daleko posunięta w Szwecji laicyzacja i sekularyzacja, ale też w znacznym stopniu rozwój społeczeństwa szwedzkiego w kierunku wielokulturowości i relatywizmu. Religia i wiara coraz bardziej stają się w Szwecji jedynie sprawą prywatną. Prezentowany dyskurs społeczny na temat tradycji religijnych w działalności współczesnej szwedzkiej szkoły ukazuje, jak pewne ugrupowania starają się wyeliminować z edukacji wszelkie elementy chrześcijańskie, nie zawsze zdając sobie sprawę z tego, że są one integralną częścią szwedzkiej kultury.
The author shows how the place for Christian religions in Swedish elementary school curricula has changed over time. The presented analysis reveals that religious education classes have evolved from lessons devoted to Luther’s teachings to lessons about world religions and ethical issues. It appears that religious education classes in their present form, including their teaching content, are the result of Sweden’s advanced laicization and secularization, but also, to a large extent, the result of Swedish society’s shift towards multiculturalism and relativism of values. Faith is becoming more and more an individual and private issue in Sweden. The social discourse on religious traditions as an element of the activity of contemporary Swedish schools presented in the paper indicates how certain organizations are attempting to eliminate Christian elements from the education of the young generation, often without realizing that they constitute an inherent element of Swedish culture.

Social life is the keystone of the existence of a human and a people and, by extension, of an entire civilization. In this essay I will try to present the way in which religious affiliation has influenced the historical evolution of society and interpersonal relationships. Therefore, after analyzing the relationship between the Christian denomination and the capitalist economy in the context of the secularization process facing the peoples of Europe, I will present the consequences of the desacralization of the world for the spiritual health of modern humans and the consequent sociological implications which tend to create faults in the contemporary world. Communion is replaced by separation, solidarity by individualism, and the inner emotional balance of human beings is jeopardized by the spiritual chaos that seems to condemn the whole society to loneliness and disintegration.
Życie społeczne jest fundamentem egzystencji człowieka i – rozszerzając – całej cywilizacji. W artykule zostaje przedstawiona droga, poprzez którą przynależność religijna wpływała na historyczną ewolucję społeczeństwa i relacji międzyludzkich. Po analizie relacji pomiędzy wyznaniami chrześcijańskimi i ekonomią kapitalistyczną w kontekście procesów sekularyzacyjnych, zostały ukazane konsekwencje desakralizacji dla duchowego zdrowia współczesnego człowieka i socjologiczne implikacje tworzące błędy współczesnego świata. Wspólnota jest zastępowana przez separację, solidarność przez indywidualizm, a wewnętrzna duchowa równowaga człowieka jest zagrożona duchowym chaosem, który zdaje się skazywać całe społeczeństwo na samotność i dezintegrację.

W artykule zostanie przedstawiona ciekawa próba wykazania, że różnice stanowisk między Peterem Singerem a szeroko rozumianą etyką chrześcijańską są mniejsze, niż by się mogło wydawać. Pogląd ten przedstawił w swojej książce pt. Peter Singer and Christian ethics. Beyond polarization Charles Camosy, katolicki etyk z USA. Celem jego pracy było wykazanie, że Peter Singer i etycy szukający inspiracji w myśli chrześcijańskiej mogą pracować razem w wielu kwestiach i że przedstawianie tych stanowisk jako radykalnie przeciwnych jest błędne. W niniejszym artykule tok rozumowania Camosy’ego będzie zreferowany i poddany krytycznej refleksji. Rzetelna praca badawcza, jakiej podjął się Camosy dla udowodnienia swoich tez, jest nowatorska i wiele wnosi do zrozumienia istoty sporu. Metoda, którą się posłużył, może wyznaczyć nowy standard dla dialogu między współczesnymi systemami etycznymi. W ostatniej części artykułu zostanie jednak zasugerowane, że autor marginalizuje pewne nieusuwalne trudności w sporze między etyką chrześcijańską a najbardziej znanym australijskim bioetykiem. Do takich trudności należy, jak się wydaje, radykalnie różne rozumienie pojęcia „osoba” oraz niechęć etyki chrześcijańskiej do pragmatycznych kompromisów w obszarze moralności.
This paper presents an interesting attempt to show that the differences between Peter Singer and Christian ethics are smaller than they appear to be. This view was presented in Peter Singer and Christian ethics. Beyond polarization by Charles Camosy, a Catholic thinker from the US. Camosy wanted to prove, that Peter Singer and ethicists looking for the inspiration in Christian thought can cooperate on many issues and to present their positions as radically polarized is incorrect. This paper is focused on the critical presentation of Camosy’s argument. The research he conducted to support his thesis is useful for understanding the whole discussion between Peter Singer and Christian ethics. His method could be a new standard of discussion between different ethical approaches. In the last part of this paper, it will be suggested, that the author has marginalized some unavoidable obstacles, which make a dialogue between Christian ethics and the famous Australian bioethicsist very difficult. Among them, understanding the notion of person, as well as the reluctance of Christians to pragmaticly compromise in the field of ethics are worth noticing.

In this article the concept of dialogue will be related to its quite narrow meaning. It will be understood as the conversation of the Church’s representatives (i.e. John Paul II, Benedict XVI) about social exclusion. This dialogue will be conducted between the eternal truths of the Christian faith codified as the Holy Bible, the dogma’s of the Christian faith, of Christian ethics and the modern world, in which pathologic phenomena, occurrences of social injustice lead to social exclusion (an exclusion nowadays considered a category of public activity, including the problems of poverty, unemployment, homelessness, social inequity) of the people of various continents.

The attitude towards death and dying reflects the society’s view on a human being as a subject. Due to the progress in medical science a growing interest has been observed in the problem of death, including the right to dignified dying. One of the issues connected with the phenomenon of dying is the problem of euthanasia seen as one’s right to decide on one’s own death in extreme cases. The question of the legality of euthanasia is becoming a subject of consideration more and more often, which is a result of a celebratory culture of death and the obsolescence of faith and religious practice. The aim of the following report is to show the attitude of major religions of the world towards euthanasia. What arguments of religious nature are against the legality of mercy killing? Both Christian and non-Christian religions rise to speak on the matter. All religions stress their veto over mercy killing, justifying their view in various ways. Christians claim that God is the donor and lord of life; a man cannot decide on ending human life as he or she is only the user, not the owner of it. Judaism assumes that human life has an absolute value, is sacred, untouchable, as God’s gift. Islam, quoting Koran, also preserves life as God’s gift. According to Buddhist ethics, the annihilation of both one’s own and someone else’s life is the worst of evil deeds. Will the arguments of religious nature mean enough to stop the legality of euthanasia?

Opis:
The anthropological and ethical disputes in some conservative Catholic circles often refer to the problem of gender equality, particularly in the educational process. They lead to a confrontation between traditional communities, on the one hand, and on the other hand, open or liberal ones. In this context, the article aims to indicate (1) the anthropological and ethical foundations of the education based on the principle of gender equality, and (2) educational demands that result from it. Further, (3) these fundamentals will be scrutinised against Catholic anthropological and ethical criticism.
Dyskusje antropologiczne i etyczne w pewnych konserwatywnych środowiskach katolickich często odnoszą się do problemu równości płciowej, zwłaszcza w procesie wychowawczym. Prowadzą one do konfrontacji pomiędzy wspólnotami tradycyjnymi i bardziej liberalnymi. W tym kontekście artykuł zmierza do wskazania (1) antropologicznych i etycznych podstaw wychowania opartego na zasadzie równości płciowej oraz (2) postulatów wychowawczych, które z nich wynikają. Następnie (3) te zasadnicze kwestie zostaną skonfrontowane z katolicką krytyką antropologiczną i etyczną.
