Opis:
A well established program can be observed in the decoration of the northern pastophoria of Nubian churches from the 9th/10th century onwards. It consisted of a painted representation of Jesus Christ blessing with his right hand the chalice held in his left and inscriptions in Greek with prayers from the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. The authors argue that this program was a Nubian creation, alluding to the function of the northern pastophorium as a place for storing oblations, keeping liturgical implements and liturgical reserve, and possibly also celebrating the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts.

Opis:
In the article Christian liturgy is presented in the hermeneutic key of genetics. It is an attempt to describe the essence of liturgy using the language of genetics. Thus the text identifies formal analogies (due to obvious reasons other forms of analogy cannot exist in this case) between genetics as the study of mechanisms which determine heredity of genes and liturgics, the theology of liturgy in particular, which studies the way of passing on and the presence of Christ’s Mystery in the celebration of mystery.

Christian spirituality was perceived differently in the whole history of Church. When we look at the spiritual heritage of Christianity, a special position is given to a unique spiritual and geographic locality – the state of monks – Athos peninsula. It is a beautiful place where no woman has ever entered. This contribution aims to describe and interpret the religious heritage of this spiritually unique place. It is perceived as a protected area and the centre of eastern spirituality. It will be described on the basis of Church history as well as on the basis of personal experience of the author who visited Mount Athos and scientifically explored the sources.
Opis:
Theatre, dance and liturgyvThe “Węgajty” Theatre School /Schola/ which operates in Warmia under the management and supervision of Wolfgang Niklaus, tries to reconstruct the medieval liturgical plays. After a few centuries of absence from the public scene in the Middle Ages (or else of concealed presence in the form of folk and ritual spectacles), the medieval theatre became reborn precisely within the Church. – In all likelihood, before the 10th century, short dramatized forms, known as liturgical plays, were presented as part of the liturgy. Like all ceremonial liturgy, they were meant to be sung, nearly in their entirety. Gradually, they were extended to form fully-fledged liturgical plays. When reforming the liturgy and tidying up liturgical books the Council of Trent (1545–1563) at the same time banished liturgical plays from Church interiors. No doubt, it was a legitimate decision on behalf of the Church as more and more lay and even satirical elements began to appear in the church liturgy. Yet, records of liturgical plays, in many cases accompanied by a musical notation and precise “stage” directions, have also been preserved until the present day. Towards the end of the 20th century, many singers, particularly those specializing in old music, tried to reconstruct this form, yet they did so exclusively by adopting the concert form (sometimes even the form of plays, but not those of liturgical spectacles). The international team grouped in the Theatre School /Schola/ has embarked on an extremely risky task – for after a few centuries of its absence from the public scene, it tried once again to incorporate the liturgical play into its natural environment – by performing it in the course of the liturgy. In order to fully comprehend this phenomenon, it is worth taking a closer look at Christianity’s attitude towards the theatre. In the present article, I focus chiefly on the liturgical context associated with the activity of the “Węgajta” Theatre School. I write about the theatre in the Bible and I try to describe how the attitude towards it evolved throughout centuries; I also write about dance in the Church and finally about the most important Christian “spectacle” – the Holy Mass.

The dedication of a Church is not the only rite that is used for the initiation of a new place of Christian worship. At the beginning of the construction of a building, liturgical sources provide for the Rite of Foundation of a Church in which blessings are asked on both the workers and also on the future edifice. This paper gives a comparative analysis of prayers used in the rites of the Byzantine-Greek and Latin traditions. Although both traditions have different theological emphasis they also have similarities too. This study bears fruit in allowing us to create a common ecumenical definition of the church-building arising from these analysed texts – it is the future place of Christian worship which (ἐκκλησία, ecclesia) is a house (οἶκος) constructed (opus) for God, to celebrate His glory (cf. Es 40,34-35; Ez 9,3) in and through the divine mysteries (templum). This place is made by the community of the faithful and it from this same community it takes its name (ἐκκλησία, ecclesia).

Opis:
An interesting proposal of solving the problem of relationship between theology and liturgy was put forward by the Roman school of liturgical theology comprising a group of theologians working mainly at Pontificio Ateneo San Anselmo, and more recently, mainly at Università Pontificia Salesiana over the time period directly preceding the Second Vatican Counsil up to now. The main founder of the Roman school of liturgical theology was Cipriano Vagaggini OSBCam (1909-1999). The second prominent personage was Salvatore Marsili OSB (1910-1983). The third theologian of this environment was Achille Maria Triacca SDB (1935-2002). The Roman school of liturgical theology also included Burkhart Neunheuser OSB (1903-2003); Adrian M. Nocent OSB (1913-1996), Matias Augé CMF, Domenico Sartore CSJ (1936-2006), and contemporarily the leading position belongs to Manlio Sodi SDB. Vagaggini understood liturgical theology as a type of systematic theology which, on one hand, describes liturgy and tries to comprehend it, and on the other hand, shows how the truths of faith live in various forms of liturgical celebration. For Marsili, liturgical theology was theology living in liturgy, moreover, he mostly equals these two concepts. This causes that liturgical theology becomes a type of mystical experience, as understood by Casel, which means contemplation of mystery in its actualization. The third of the mentioned theologians – Triacca made an effort to creatively harmonize earlier conceptions and then gave it an original shape. He started with the assumption that liturgy cannot be reduced solely to celebration (Actio), and its understanding should take into account everything that is present in in celebration which is the mystery of the Christian faith (Mysterium) and the Christian life (Vita). Theology cannot be an exclusive domain of researchers because it first comes from God, so it grows from experience of God. Liturgical theology in its strict sense can be analyzed on two levels. First and most important, it is a Christian experience which occurs in liturgical celebration. In this sense, one can often have impression that liturgical theology is something non-communicable and consists in the participant’s internal experience and reflection (contemplation). In this way, liturgical theology seems to be identified with the very conscious participation in celebration. The level of scientific reflection is the second level of analysis of liturgical theology. On this level numerous methodological attempts may be noticed but, eventually, most issues remain open and are challenges for further research. Practically, liturgical theology becomes theology from theologically interpreted liturgical celebration, especially from euchology.

Opis:
As a result of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic, Christian funeral rites started to be celebrated based on the introduced restrictions rather than liturgical norms. More and more frequently, funerals were held without a priest or a Mass. Funeral rites connected with body cremation and interring the urn in a grave were often applied. Those customs may continue to affect the method of celebrating funeral rites also after the pandemic. Therefore, special care should be taken in pastoral practice to ensure the proper celebration of Christian funeral rites. In this formation, we should remember that for a Christian, his/her entire life started with Holy Baptism should be a gradual preparation for death viewed in the Paschal dimension as the meeting with God.

Opis:
The excavations in Selib have brought to light a few objects used in the liturgical practices performed in the local churches. Among a dozen or so fragmentarily preserved chalices, juglets and patens, there is a terracotta roundel provided with a circular aperture in the upper side. Made of pinkish red clay, it is decorated with a repeated stamped motif of a haloed orant figure shown en face with arms held parallel to the upper body. It is accompanied by figures of animals set in profile. The masterly execution of the animal figures enables the recognition of the images of lionesses. Consequently the orant figure in between two metopes with a lioness each could only be St Thecla. The author suggests that the Selib roundel plausibly served as an altar casket placed on an altar to house a Eucharistic chalice. An alternative use would have been as a stand for a peculiar Nubian paten(?) with a depression in the bottom. Regardless of the real purpose, in the case of the Selib roundel the label of ‘altar casket’ is valid.

This article is devoted to the question concerning the conceptualization of power and its religious basis in pre-modern societies, carried out through a study of the inauguration rituals – especially the marriage – that mark not only the instigation of the power of the ruler but also suggests its religious basis, conceptualization and justification. It is grounded on source material from Byzantium and its legacy in the countries of South-Eastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. The analysis has shown the woman as legitimating power in the case of royalty in connection with its correspondence to marriage. The legitimation and confirmation of the kingship in some pagan cultures passed through a hierogamy, conceived as a unity with the universal harmony in the image of a chthonic goddess. From the Christian point of view the relations between the royal bride and the bridegroom was under the archetypal model of the relation of Jesus Christ to His Church. He (Christ and the christian ruler) became a priest and king of the order of Melchisedek. That is why the rite of passage to Kingship corresponds to that of marriage, instituted by Lord Jesus Christ under the model of His own relation to the Church.

Dominant trends within the philosophical debate over personhood and identity tend to discount the significance and meaning of the human body and often slip into dualistic conceptions. I will argue that a Catholic theology of the body challenges many of the prevalent understandings in bioethics today. Such a notion takes Christ’s Incarnation as its foundation and seeks to develop an account of the human body in the context of the call to communion imprinted on humanity as made in the image of the Trinitarian communion of love. Such a conception counteracts forms of utilitarian or technological reductionism of the person. While Catholic bioethicists will need to consider how such an account will have practical applicability to cases, the call to communion ought to be fostered through the liturgical life of the Church, which enables Catholic bioethicists to develop a liturgical worldview that guards against devaluations of the dignity of the human person.
