How are the two literatures – the classic, the heritage, the scholarly versus the children’s literature, the overly easy editorial productions – much less opposed in reality than one might think? How can a real complementarity exist between literatures which will perhaps never be patrimonial but which can become school and the “great” literature? We will show how the reading of mythographic works seeks to design a teaching which makes the encounter with the book a triple opportunity for enrichment: to be moved, to escape, to learn. We will show how the reading of mythographic works seeks to design a teaching which makes the encounter with the book a triple opportunity for enrichment: to be moved, to escape, to learn. By taking into account the requirements of the time and the need for the school not to operate apart from opinions and practices, by a literature and a reading which accept to be useful for something, the French course must make sense by offering a new culture which is first and foremost a culture of oneself. It is first of all to show a living classical literature.

Such a problematised view of the is-sue is inscribed in the reflection on intercultural education, under the patron-age of the philosophy of love and compassion represented by Martha Nuss-baum. The assumptions of the humanistic philosophy of love will be confront-ed with the (pre-)school and school practice preparing children to meet the Other.

The article encourages reflection on the role of Polish language education in the face of contemporary challenges. One of them is the expansion of populism (e.g. in politics, in the media, in the way of thinking about education) and the accompanying disinformation campaigns, propaganda or replacing information analysis with emotional opinions. We are also in Poland witnessing this disturbing process, which threatens the foundations of democracy. That is why teaching a critical attitude towards theses expressed in public discourse is so important. The article shows how access to reliable information can contribute to forming such an attitude. The author also suggests that the interpretation of modern children’s literature may be used to expose populist lies, harmful simplifications, and manipulation of facts; it can also successfully support the development of mature civic awareness even among very young students. The point of reference in this case is the problem of attitude towards refugees.

The paper discusses children’s literature as a construction (re)produced by adults. The author refers to several questions raised about the meaning of this notion and its relationships with so-called adult literature, presents main scholarly theories on it, and shows that western image of this category of books relies on constructions of childhood. It is indicated that the dominant western construction of children’s literature as a “safe and useful land of immaturity” bases on two discourses, which organize the ways of understanding childhood in this cultural circle (not forgetting about particular national variants): the Romantic discourse and the discourse of tabula rasa. From this perspective, children’s literature can be seen as a result of adult fantasies, assumptions, desires, and rules. This construction, as the author argues, is being reproduced by children’s stories, which may repeat it in various modalities or, paradoxically, negate it.

The text raises the question of movement as a crucial category in the process of a child’s literary reception. The article reflects on the kinetic aspects of a text and a reader as well as on the perspective of a child’s subjective reception as dependent on personal predispositions of a child‑recipient. The author is interested in the intersections of the components of a literary work and the capabilities of a child‑recipient, that is, in the phenomenon called “reader response.” Referring to achievements of developmental psychology, the researcher introduces the figure of a child reader. Next, on the example of Jan Brzechwa’s poem “Stonoga,” she presents its mobility in language, pointing to the existence of “dynamic images,” created in a recipient’s imagination. In this way, she indicates the kinesthetic value of children’s literature.

This analysis aims to describe the main features of hypermedia literary apps for children by considering a corpus of adaptations of classic and contemporary picturebooks. In particular, it highlights the multimodal nature that defines hypermedia texts and their meanings, as well as the interactivity that programs different degrees of readers’ involvement and the various ways of using and exploring the virtual space of touchscreens. By describing some hypermedia features deployed in a selection of classic texts, I focus on the hypermedia adaptations of three contemporary Italian picturebooks: Iole, la balena mangiaparole by Gioia Marchegiani, Amico ragnolo by gloria francella, and Love, the App by Alberto Vanni. These were chosen to illustrate the significant literary use of several textual materials, the implementation of different types of interactivity, and the recreation of the material characteristics of the print edition through the virtual page. Founded on the appropriation and re-interpretation of the source, the adaptations considered here show a mix of literary intents and digital technologies, while highlighting the substantial homogeneity of the hypermedia strategies used in adapting classic and contemporary texts.

Opis:
This article discusses a representation of the relationship between a child and a big city in American and European children’s and teens’ literature. In many books, a child or a teen is portrayed as a contemporary flâneur, an idle city walker. Following Eric Tribunella’s adaptation of Walter Benjamin’s definition of a flâneur to children, the article explores various book representations of the big cities as they are seen through the eyes of a child. The city dweller perceives her environment as an exciting, even though sometimes threatening, place. Acting as a flâneur and a voyeur, a child develops a complicated relationship with the streets and museums of the big city. Enormous walking (and transportation) possibilities of the city are very attractive for youngsters. The hidden wonders of the big city mesmerize the curious minds of children and teens, making them natural voyeurs. Children are capable of combining the aimless gaze of a flâneur with the precise attention of a voyeur. Often, a city becomes one of the very important characters in a book, and a child forms a partnership with the city. In spite of the notion of adults that the city is a dangerous place for children, children immensely enjoy the city spaces, streets, parks, and museums. Museums particularly work as symbolical places of safety and exploration. Contemporary children and teenagers enjoy even more freedom to be city flâneurs and voyeurs due to the newly acquired speed of movement, including the use of bikes, scooters, and public transportation. With the main focus on New York City as one of the most striking example of a big city in children’s books, the article also discusses the literary representations of other megalopolises and large cities, such as Moscow and Minsk.

In the article the author examines fantastic novels by contemporary Polish writers (Andrzej Maleszka, Paweł Beręsowicz, Rafał Kosik and other) for young readers in a cultural context. In his essay he uses two well-known cultural categories “myth” and “magic” to his analysis of fantastic novels. According to the author, the myth and magic have two important functions in fantastic children’s literature. First, they lead young readers to knowledge about the world and depict different, complex phenomena of cultural dimension. Second, the myth and magic create a particular space (what “engulfs” young readers) of play and entertainment. Moreover, the myth and magic attract young readers to fabulous worlds including the elements of realistic literary convention. Thereby the writers increase their credibility among the youth. A “myth-magic” in the presented word of contemporary Polish fantastic novels assures balance between incredible entertainment represented by wizards, witches, dragons and the real world with characters having various digital devices within reach.

The article discusses children’s literature as a matter that can become highly politicized. While often viewed as apolitical, stories for children have always been subjected to hegemonic ideologies and mediated dominant norms. The analysis focuses on gender dimension of this normativity and shows that the attempts to create gender subversive stories for children have to face not only the conservative backlash but they also have to deal with wider cultural context and contemporary meanings of childhood. The last section of the article shows that no matter how gender balanced or stereotypical a story is, the interpretation lies with children themselves. Thus, researchers analyzing messages in children’s stories always have to take into account young readers and their diverse ways of understanding.

Although in the first decades of the 20th century the Albanian literature for children did not recognize any distinguished literary work, a series of liberation insurrections in north and south as well as the Declaration of Independence in 1912 show the great efforts of our Renaissance figures who were teachers, ideologists and active participants in the armed movement. All this big issues in the life of Albanian people as well as their freedom-loving spirit become the inspiration of many themes, details and motives in the Albanian literature for children. Some of well-known representatives of our national Renaissance such as: Çajupi, Asdreni, Fishta, Mjeda, Gurakuqi, Xanoni, J.Bageri etc., continued writing even during the first decades of the 20th century. In their poetic and literary writings, one could distinguish the romantic spirit of the exuberance of the love for the country, for the nature, for the universe, and sometimes there could be distinguished even a realistic tone which described the Albanian life. Throughout all this literary work, the love for the country was connected with the love for the language and with the great efforts that were made for founding Albanian schools, with the reverberation of the wars for freedom, with the description of nature, birds and flowers as well as with the inspiration taken from the fantastical and fabulous world of the world literature.

Opis:
After Ukraine’s independence in 1991 Ukrainian children got wider access to the translations of the works of prominent world writers for children. The classic literature of the world, aiming to mediate the children’s feelings for beauty and literary aesthetic, became an integral part of the Ukrainian educational system. Thanks to the increase of famous children’s books written in modern Ukraine, Ukraine is now experiencing the growth of a new generation of more intelligent and capable citizens free from communism ideology, able to integrate and positively contribute to the modern multicultural world. However “children and war” is now again among the painful topics in modern Ukrainian society but not new in history and literature. There are no wars, initiated by Ukrainians. The Famine of Ukrainians in the East of Ukraine by Russians, the Second World War, physical genocide of Ukrainian families and their children for the whole century even also just for the Ukrainian language saved Pain and Distrust in the generation memory of Ukrainians. But the aim of this survey of the Ukrainian literature for children and youth is to show the developing processes in the society on the basics of the main ideas, topics, directions and values during the XX-XXI centuries, beginning since the end of the XIX century by such prominent writer like Ivan Franko.

For many years the media have presented the rainforest as a fascinating and exotic place, abundant in various species of plants and animals, the home of people decorated with feathers or holding spears. Picturebooks are no exception. This article presents the ways a popular image of the Amazon forest is produced in picturebooks for young readers in English-speaking industrialised societies. The analysis shows that shaping knowledge about the tropical forest is based on stereotypes about the “untouched pristine forest” populated by “wild indigenous people” – a notion that is spurious. Some of these books undertake the subject of indigenous knowledge or the loss of cultural identity. However the presentation of these issues often lacks deeper dimensions. The exoticisation of rainforest inhabitants as well as the forest itself may have a negative impact on young readers’ understanding of the cultural diversity of the Amazon, as well as their understanding of the complexity of indigenous peoples’ lives.

In order to determine this, I will investigate the choices of translators of this medium and their awareness of multimodality. I intend to conduct a series of individual in-depth interviews with picturebook translators. The first interview has already been conducted and analysed, and in this paper I present the results of this analysis. In the examples cited from the supporting material, it can be observed that the translator took into account the relationship between the textual and visual layers, changing the original text in accordance with the visual layer.

Opis:
This article examines how the child consumer is represented in a selection of branded picturebooks at the beginning of the 20th century. By analyzing children’s books published by a commercial chain of stores, the Cooperation Union, the article discusses how depictions of children as consumers are connected to the development of the emerging mass market and consumer society. The new ideas and marketing strategies expressed in these books also coincide with fundamental social changes in society, resulting from modernity and new technologies. Although the Cooperation books were designed for children and used familiar narrative techniques and motifs within children’s literature, I will argue that the books had a twofold audience. They were not only aimed at children but also at their parents. Representations of children as consumers in the studied material suggest that consumption is strongly connected to ideas of modernity and to representations of the modern child, but also that consumption is described as an inseparable part of the modern, urban experience.

The paper analyzes metafictional aspects of the children’s book series A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket as adapted in a 2017 TV series. Focusing on the metaleptic narrator and the receiver’s role in the story’s interpretation, the analysis shows that the metafiction’s manifestation undergoes certain shifts due to the adaption’s status as a secondary work and the underlying existence of the primary text, as well as the visual mode of storytelling predominant in film.

Opis:
Aim. The aim of the research is the comparative study of literary cat characters in Children’s Literature texts in Greek and Spanish and their instructive function in the transmission of social stereotypes. Methods. The research subscribes to the field of Literary Animal Studies based on the theory of Children’s Literature (Lukens, 1999) and through the intercultural perspective of Comparative Children’s Literature (O’Sullivan, 2005). Published children’s books from Greece, Spain and Spanish-speaking America were compared using textual analysis methods of Imagology (Beller & Leersen, 2007). Stereotyped variants were identified and organized in categories related to name, physical appearance, gender, behavior, and function of literary cat characters. Results. After examining a corpus of 37 books, 23 in Greek and 17 in Spanish (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Spain), textual analysis findings were compared, organized, and classified by language, country and readers’ age groups to locate that literary cat characters are usually pets or feral, and they remain consistently stereotyped as anthropomorphic and subversive. Cats with seven lives and magical powers are common perceptions, dominating in both cultural contexts, stereotypes extended to strong superstitions about black cats. Conclusions. In Children's Literature texts, cats are linguistically, literally, and socially defined literary constructs, can have usually human-like features, intercultural influences, and are potentially shaped by intertextual relations. They serve also as a narrative motif for the transmission of social values about non-human animals and the textual familiarization of nonadult readers with society’s cultural stereotypes.

The aim of this article is to answer the question as to how to make a child reader interested in and focusing attention on reading. According to Jerzy Cieślikowski and many other researchers, children’s literature has its own rules, poetics of genres, and specific communications circuit: publishing houses, the market, the press, and criticism. Dorota Masłowska employed the form of a literary fairy tale to reach out to a young audience. Usingthe conventions of this genre, she described one of the most painful problems of modern times – excessive consumerism, in which modern man completely loses himself.

This article is concerned with the translation of children’s literature; it focuses on the ways in which Polish translators of Mark Twain’s novel Adventures of Tom Sawyer deal with the descriptions of the Black minority. The first part of the paper provides a historical overview concerning the publication of the novel and its first editions. It also looks at its status on the Polish market. Next, the paper discusses the notion of political correctness and its role in works written for young audiences. It also examines the terms used to refer to Afro-Americans in eight translations of the novel. Three of them, i.e. the translations by Jan Biliński, Marceli Tarnowski and Kazimierz Piotrowski, appeared in the first half of the 20th century; the remaining ones, i.e. the translations by Paweł Łopatka, Paweł Beręsewicz, Marta Kędroń and Barbara Ludwiczak, Aleksandra Kubiak, Jędrzej Polak, were published after 2000. All the versions were examined to identify the situations in which the writer, narrator and the characters refer to the representatives of the Black minority. The analysis aimed at the identification of the changes in the translation of fragments describing Afro-Americans resulting from political correctness.

This article is an attempt to examine whether literature can be a remedy for the problems faced by children of different ages. The report Children’s rights from the perspective of children, parents and teachers was published in 2019 by UNICEF Polska. It has been used to diagnose the reasons for unhappiness among children aged 12—17. Among the reasons are: school and education, relationships with loved ones, relationships with peers. In her article, Katarzyna Kotaba refers to such authorities as Irena Borecka, Maria Molicka, and Bruno Bettelheim and to their unanimous opinion that good and valuable literature takes seriously children, their concerns and difficulties; moreover, this kind of literature helps children to overcome difficulties by building their self-confidence. Kotaba identifies the main thematic motifs in Gawryluk’s fiction and shows how this writer’s novels can help under-age readers cope in specific life situations, such as the parents’ divorce, emigration, and racism. In conclusion, she suggests that Gawryluk’s novels could be regarded as a cure for young readers’ problems as identified in the UNICEF report.

Cel badań: Jako cel badań wykorzystanych w artykule obrano próbę rekonstrukcji obrazu polskiej książki dziecięcej przełomu XIX i XX wieku, uwzględniając dwa problemy badawcze. Dotyczą one estetyki oraz przesłań wychowawczych lektury polecanej najmłodszym czytelnikom. Te zakresy badań są dość skąpo reprezentowane. Wykorzystano metody i techniki badań historycznych. Kształtowanie patriotyzmu u dzieci obejmowało przekaz chlubnych kart dziejowych z historii polskiego narodu, budzenie afirmacyjnego stosunku do rodzimej przyrody obecne w kluczowych wydaniach dla młodego czytelnika przełomu XIX i XX wieku.
Introduction: Polish children’s literature grew out of a close relationship between literature and pedagogy, which took place at the beginning of the nineteenth century, in a difficult political and economic situation for Poles due to the continuation of the partition regime. The cultural development of the nation is connected with the upbringing of the young generation. In the nineteenth century, the Polish book was introduced as a means of education. Research Aim: The aim of the research used in the article was an attempt to reconstruct the image of the Polish children’s book at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, taking into account two research problems. They concern the aesthetics and educational messages of reading recommended for the youngest readers. These areas of research are quite sparsely represented. Methods and techniques of historical research were used. Evidence-based Facts: Polish children’s literature developing during the partitions of Poland was studied by a group of Polish researchers: literary scholars, bibliologists, pedagogues and historians of education. However, this research area is unexploited, constituting a rich material for new research searches. Summary: The conducted analyses show that in the years preceding regaining independence, two educational positions dominated children’s literature. The first concerned building a patriotic attitude, the second emphasized pragmatism and realism of everyday situations. A number of examples of books for children that confirm these conclusions have been analyzed. The formation of patriotism in children included the transmission of glorious historical pages from the history of the Polish nation, awakening an affirmative attitude to native nature present in key editions for young readers at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Everyday life is presented mainly by images of family, children’s games and instructive stories, adventures from the life of peers. The aesthetics of the children’s book of the discussed period fits into the style in force at that time, based on the pursuit of a masterful typographic arrangement. The uniqueness of the illustrations, especially colorful, as can be assumed, were a strong reinforcement of the impact of the message.

Opis:
Article is deeply rooted in the history of society, presents the historical and socio-cultural situation of phenomenon of playing, children’s games and the role of children’s literature between the Enlightenment and Romanticism and shows that especially the middle class does not occupy an outstanding position. On the contrary, the middle class belongs to the most sceptical social forces. The central values of the middle class – especially the puritan, Calvinist und pietistic parts of it – are different: industriousness, diligence, asceticism, the sacrifice of pleasure, efficiency and rationality. In the bourgeois use of time, all idleness basically counts as suspicious, all playing as a useless waste of time. This attitude is reinforced by the polemical delimitation from the noble and courtly lifestyle, in which all kinds of games have a central place and which, for this reason, is viewed as parasitic. Article pays attention also to the German word for play or game (in German, there is just one word for this, “Spiel”), which can be used for mental games, word play, but also the performance on stage or in an orchestra. Beyond this, text emphasised how to classify genres based on play with language, with sense and nonsense, as well as literary patterns, and genres such as nonsense poetry and parody, as part of intellectual culture rather than part of play culture.

Paul Maar
intertextuality in translation
Opis:
Paul Maar (born in 1937) is one of the most important modern German writers for children and young people. He is widely known for his bestselling series of books about Sams (1973) – a strange creature – a mixture of a child, a monkey and a pig that can grant wishes. Sams is an incorporation of anarchy and playfulness and in this way resembles Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Langstrumpf, but first of all it refers to E. T. A. Hoffmanns fantastic tale “The strange child” (1817). Hoffmann’s and Paul Maar’s stories reveal a lot of similarities and both are revolutionary as far as the methods of children’s education are concerned. Both underline the importance of play, creativity and freedom for children’s development. The first book about Sams was translated into Polish in 2009, more than 35 years after its German premiere. The Polish version was probably too late to be able to play a similarly revolutionary role. The connection to E. T. A. Hoffmann’s “The Strange Child” could also not be noticed as its Polish rendition was published even later – in 2014 (translated by the author of the paper). But the shape of Polish translation can also be one of the reasons why Sams did not gain a comparable popularity as the original story. Polish Sams – due to some modifications in the translation – is a much more well-behaved and disciplined creature than the anarchic and playful German Sams.

Opis:
This paper analyses the publishing trends of children’s literature in Italy on the basis of the annual reports issued by LiBeRWEB. The analysis, which focuses on the book publishing market, starts by introducing the main Italian publishing houses, in whose hands the publication of children’s books is concentrated. The paper will also talk about independent micropublishing by introducing the most active publishing houses, which are specialised in specific areas, such as gender studies. The publishing market will be progressively investigated by analysing several data, which suggest that literature for children and young adults is the driving segment of the Italian book publishing market. Indeed, despite the economic crisis, this is the only segment that has had positive results in the last years. In particular, the data examine several elements, which will allow us to understand such a phenomenon. If in the last years the so-called “high literature” has lost many percentage points (-7.6% in 2009), the “Cinderella of literature” has, instead, obtained positive results (+4%), maintaining constant production levels. Despite the use of percentages, the analysis takes into consideration other elements, like the quality of works, whose criteria are difficult to establish. The data show a positive change: if up to 2006 the number of novels of mediocre quality was high, probably do to a consumer trend of the market, from 2007 onwards, the situation progressively improves. Finally, the article briefly discusses the data of the digital market by analysing the role of audiobooks and e-books in the Italian market of children’s literature.

In an attempt to find a possible criterion according to which to select the most representative titles and authors in the history of Italian children’s literature, one finds that a very peculiar theme characterises the books that can be considered most remarkable: death. Death, though, in Italian as well as in all the other children’s classics around the world, is not dealt with in a literal way, but in a metaphorical, symbolic, indirect one. Therefore, it is necessary to borrow interpretative approaches from other scientific fields (anthropology and philosophy, for example) in order to understand death’s deepest meaning and to discover that what it stands for, in Italian (and not only Italian) children’s literature, is an “otherness”, a “beyond”, an unknown and non-anthropocentric dimension that children must go through in order to grow up.

Children’s literature is sometimes considered to be the poor relation of literary genres throughout the world, as it is often confined to the rank of literature for the very young. Yet, on closer inspection, does this literature not play an important role in establishing national identity? In other words, does it contribute to the spread of tolerance and therefore to living together? Backed by Pierre Barbéris’ sociocriticism and structured in three parts, this contribution first illustrates the motivations behind the characters’ behavioural imposture; then examines the internal components that articulate the novel’s literality. Finally, the analysis shows that Jeanne Abou’ou’s Lettre à Tita 2, beyond the stigmatization of a poorly assumed modernism or the exaltation of traditional values, deeply encapsulates the writer’s desire to postulate an emerging world in which Cameroonians would readily identify themselves.

Opis:
Children’s literature, despite being a relatively young branch of literature in general, is an important factor in the upbringing of children. Its basic aims have been obvious but not simple to achieve – to develop a child’s personality, provide educational experiences and encourage him to read. Along with areas such as art, theater, puppetry, music, movement and field trips, literature is also an object of children’s attention. Moreover it provides an opportunity to gain experience and learn a lesson, as children are usually open to fairytale-like content. Because of that, a magic world of adventures usually becomes a part of the educational process, imparting moral patterns and exposing them to various experiences, values and attitudes. Listening to stories told by parents, nannies, and teachers, which are later read by children themselves, is an activity beloved by children from all over the world. This research focuses especially on Kurdish experiences in terms of children’s literature and its role in bringing up a child. It indicates essential differences between contents, aims and circumstances upon which certain stories occurred. It provides an explanation of their role in developing a mature personality and patriotism41 upbringing among Kurdish children.
Przedstawiają wyjaśnienie roli tych opowiadań w rozwijaniu dojrzałej osobowości i patriotyzmu w procesie wychowania kurdyjskich dzieci.

Focusing on Stradbroke Dreamtime (1972), the first prose book of an Australian Indigenous poet, activist and educationalist, Oodgeroo Noonuccal (also known as Kath Walker), I reflect on questions which arise around cross-cultural communication and translation. Prompted by the unfinished project aimed at translating Stradbroke Dreamtime into Polish, I deliberate on challenges to respond appropriately to Australian Indigenous writing, particularly if it is influenced by white editing and publishing practices which often privilege Eurocentric views. Situating Stradbroke Dreamtime in the broader context of Noonuccal’s life, political activism and pedagogical efforts, I read her work as an intergenerational, inclusive and transformative project, and an act of solidarity between generations and cultures. In the context of Indigenous Australia, the concept of solidarity is often associated with reconciliation. I explore this nexus, arguing that Stradbroke Dreamtime reflects Walker’s strategy for reconciliation which includes empowering children through storytelling.

Opis:
The author analyzes the essential relationship between contemporary literature for children and youth and axiology in the context of Walter Benjamin’s concept of aura. Dimension of the children’s literature includes a numerous works which present a different system of values, e.g. from conservative to the liberal. However, a huge part of such works have a feature of a typical popular text but still a reader can find an artistic, valuable works for children on the Polish book market. Therefore a suitable support for the process of management between children’s literature and the system of value is the most important issue. Thus, a traditional work of reviewers and researchers is not enough today to find a suitable path to exam a numerous work of the children’s literature in axiological context. Therefore the author argues that we should describe the connection between the contemporary children’s literature and axiology by the three phenomena: blog-critique, dominance of a public discourse and a children’s writer.

Opis:
Picturebooks (and silent books, with images only and without words) are children’s books commonly considered suitable only for young children of pre-school age or in the earliest years of schooling. For this reason, picturebooks are mostly neglected in teaching in higher educational stages. Nevertheless, the educational potential of picturebooks is considerable, especially in the later years of primary school. For example, in Italian language teaching, they can be extraordinary tools for planning didactic projects that allow instructors to integrate the teaching/learning of all linguistic skills and of metalinguistic reflection, which are the main elements in the curricula related to Italian language teaching in Italian-speaking countries and contexts. The article aims to show the validity of the above claim by establishing a possible classification of picturebooks into six distinct types and by describing some didactic projects and activities developed in primary schools in Canton Ticino (Italian Switzerland). Focusing on the pleasure of reading engaging stories and on motivation, picturebooks enable teachers to pursue ambitious and challenging goals, such as creating one or more new picturebooks inspired by the one read initially or transposing a picturebook into a theatre script. At the same time, picturebooks enable students to develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

Opis:
The article Zombie Apocalypse in Contemporary Children’s Literature tackles a subject which has scarcely been mentioned in Polish research on children’s literature: that of catastrophic zombie-centric narratives, elements of which – especially the motif of the zombie apocalypse – are increasingly common in works targeted at children of pre- school and early school age. Three popular English-language picturebooks are interpreted: A Brain Is for Eating (2001) by Dan and Amelia Jacobs with ilustrations by Scott Brundage, Joe McGee and Charles Santoso’s Peanut Butter & Jelly Brains (2015), and Zombie Cat. The Tale of a Decomposing Kitty (2012) by Isabel Atherton and Bethany Straker. The dominant features of these books are respectively: dark carnivalisation and a drastic representation of bloodthirsty monsters; mild carnivalisation and a zombie-child as a humanised phantom; dark carnivalisation with an animal zombie leitmotif. The texts present a multidimensional, grotesque-macabre depiction inspired by children’s folklore and apocalyptic gore cinema, as well as its significance in the context of discourses focused on post-humanism and social issues of importance in the present day. The article also seeks to answer the question of why these subjects are less popular among Polish authors, and what makes them so important in Anglo-Saxon children’s literature.
Artykuł „Apokalipsa zombie we współczesnej literaturze dziecięcej” porusza mało rozpoznany w polskich badaniach nad literaturą dla dzieci temat katastroficznych narracji zombiecentrycznych, których elementy, szczególnie motyw zombie apokalipsy, pojawiają się coraz częściej w utworach skierowanych do dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym i młodszym wieku szkolnym. Interpretacji podlegają trzy popularne anglosaskie książki obrazkowe: „A Brain is for Eating” (2001) Dana i Amelii Jacobsów z ilustracjami Scotta Brundagea,„Peanut Butter & Jelly Brains”(2015) Joe’go McGee i Charles’a Santoso oraz „Zombie Cat.

Writers build the literary myth of the forest as mother-nature, in which the main place belongs to the bison. The Białowieża Forest has got its own storytellers, who create fabulous stories, full of universal as well as regional and borderland elements. The paper presents the results of the analysis of about a hundred Polish books for younger children (3–10 year-olds) written in the 21st century. During the research special attention was paid to the depiction of children’s play in the analysed literature. The author compared the character of play in Polish children’s classics (M. Konopnicka, M. Kownacka, Cz. Janczarski) with recent stories and novels (written by G. Kasdepke, R. Jędrzejewska-Wróbel, R. Witek, A. Tyszka and others). Some sociological research is referenced in order to assess whether writers present actual situations of play (diagnostic) or try to influence play by giving advice on how to play and what to play (prescriptive). The main conclusions of the research are: in contemporary literature for young readers, children’s play is not presented as often as it was in the previous century; children characters need adults’ help, advice or company to play, they rarely play outside with their friends without adult supervision. Instead, children’s play now often takes place in cyberspace and kids become addicted to their computers and other electronic devices; children are often bored and expect help in finding interesting and involving forms of play.

Aim. School segregation is a common theme of children’s books on minority groups living in the United States. Although it is primarily associated with black-white racial divisions, currently it also concerns white-Latino or rich-poor disparities. The aim of this paper is to analyse children’s picture books featuring Latino and African American characters who participate in the struggle against school segregation. The authors of the books, being members of racial minorities themselves, offer differing perspectives on the problem. Although they criticise school segregation, they also focus on the white perspective and the reasons why integrating schools has always been hard to achieve. Methods. The study analyses the visual and verbal narratives of selected picture books using a variety of methods for examining this literary format. Among others, it applies the theory of picture book analysis by Martin Painter, William Moebius, Maria Nikolajeva and Carole Scott. Results. The article shows that despite the existing scholarship on race-related problems in American schools, children’s literature seems to be the medium which tries to explain the problem to youngsters being directly involved in the system of segregation. Conclusions. The results can be useful to educators who cope with the issue of racial diversity in American schools. They may consider using selected titles of children’s literature as teaching aids assisting students from minority groups in the process of self-development and empowerment.

The article comments on the ninth Polish translation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, by Elżbieta Tabakowska. As the key to the analysis of this translation, the present author has chosen the relations between the text and image, especially the illustrations by sir John Tenniel and Tove Jansson. As opposed to previous translators or Alice in Wonderland, Tabakowska’s attempts to modernise the book to make it more accessible for 20th-century readers, and more compatible with 20th-century illustrations. In the edition discussed here, it is actually possible to discern two translations, translation proper and and an intersemiotic one, because illustrations by the author of Moomin books introduce connotations which would be totally alien to 19th-century girls. Through analysis of specific translation choices, the article underlines the strengths of the newest translation, such as its competent Polish, the wealth of Polish contexts, the educational role of exoticisation, and the retained principle of double reception. The article, however, also points out to certain weaknesses of the translation. Anna Rogulska also notices that, because the represented world is deeply rooted in the culture of Victorian England, the text cannot by fully rendered in the 21st century. Another interpretative key for the reading of the newest Polish edition of Carroll’s book is cognitive linguistics, which is the academic specialisation of the translator. The article demonstrates that the function of the new translation was not only a contribution to the long series of Polish renditions of Alice in Wonderland, but also a practical application of cognitive science in literature, which makes the translation valuable not only for children’s literature, but also for scientific inquiry.

Opis:
Generations of Australian children have been presented with iconic figures and values associated with the events of 1915 at Gallipoli and involved in the ritual practices of remembrance exemplified by Anzac Day ceremonies throughout a corpus of children’s literature which ranges from picture books for pre-schoolers to young adult fiction. This paper aims to broadly identify the narrative strategies at work in a selection of recent stories of brave animals helping the Aussie boys under fire or paeans to the duty of personal and communal remembrance and to examine them in a larger context of national self-representation.
