Opis:
Selenium is one of the trace elements playing a crucial role in a proper function of living organisms. Selenium intake varies, largely based on the selenium content of food. The daily Se intake recommended for adults amounts to 55 μg per day. The mean level of selenium in the population varies considerably between countries. Recent studies on the selenium dietary intakes in Poland showed that it is not sufficient to meet the daily requirement for this microelement so it is strongly recommended to employ selenium supplementation. The commercial product SEL-BRCA1®  being a selenium diet supplement was subjected to chemical and microbial analysis to determine its stability in storage time and conditions. Basing on the obtained results it can be stated that the stability of studied supplement, stored in the closed bottles, can be confirmed for the period of time up to 45 months after the production date and it is not recommended to store opened bottles for the period of time longer than 12 months. The studied supplement showed a very high microbial stability what underscores its usefulness as human medicines.

Opis:
Samples of PM10 and PM2.5 fractions were collected between the years 2010 and 2013 at the urban area of Krakow, Poland. Numerous types of air pollution sources are present at the site; these include steel and cement industries, traffic, municipal emission sources and biomass burning. Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence was used to determine the concentrations of the following elements: Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br, Rb, Sr, As and Pb within the collected samples. Defi ning the elements as indicators, airborne particulate matter (APM) source profiles were prepared by applying principal component analysis (PCA), factor analysis (FA) and multiple linear regression (MLR). Four different factors identifying possible air pollution sources for both PM10 and PM2.5 fractions were attributed to municipal emissions, biomass burning, steel industry, traffic, cement and metal industry, Zn and Pb industry and secondary aerosols. The uncertainty associated with each loading was determined by a statistical simulation method that took into account the individual elemental concentrations and their corresponding uncertainties. It will be possible to identify two or more sources of air particulate matter pollution for a single factor in case it is extremely difficult to separate the sources.

Opis:
The proven bentonite reserve in Nigeria has been modestly estimated at more than 700 million tonnes, however her bentonite does not meet the API regulation standard. Hence this work was done with the aim of characterizing and beneficiating Nigeria bentonite clay to meet the required standard. Bentonite clay was gotten from Ewekoro in Ogun state of Nigeria, it was characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to identify the structural layers which indicates the arrangement of the atoms in clay samples and X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrophotometer (XRF) which was used in the quantitative analysis of the elements in the sample. The XRD confirmed the presence of montmorillonite meaning the sample contained bentonite, while the XRF confirmed that the sample is Ca-based rather than the standard Na-based, hence the need for beneficiation. Beneficiation of the bentonite was done by ion exchange with Na2CO3 followed by addition with different compositions of viscosifiers namely: carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), drispac and guar gum. The rheological properties together with the swelling ratio and filter loss of the clay were determined. Although some of the bentonite compositions met the required standard, but the bentonite formulation with the combination of 20.125 g bentonite + 2.875 g guar gum + 0.6 g drispac gave the best result.

Opis:
The present study was carried out in the Ousteri lake (Puducherry State) from October 2013 to September 2014. The samples were collected during morning hours and were analysed monthly for physical, chemical and biological parameters. The various physico-chemical parameters like Water temperature, pH, Free CO2, Dissolved Oxygen, Turbidity, Electrical conductivity, Total dissolved solids, Total alkalinity, Chloride, Phosphate, Nitrate, Biological oxygen demand and Chemical oxygen demand were analyzed. Results have shown an increased concentration in physico-chemical parameters is more in summer compared to other seasons. The plankton studies were noticed that a total of 34 species belonging to 26 genus under the 4 classes. Among these, Cyanophyceae comprised of 15 species (belonging to 11 genera) followed by Chlorophyceae 9 species (belonging to 7 genera), Bacillariophyceae 7 species (belonging to 6 genera) and Euglenophyceae 3 species (belonging to 2 genera) were recorded. During the study it was found that Cyanophyceae algal growth is dominated over Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Euglenophyceae.

Opis:
Aluminized melt cast formulations based on 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) deliver an enhanced blast effect because the secondary combustion process of aluminum (Al) occurs beyond the detonation zone. A new method is introduced to assess the detonation performance and characteristics of aluminized TNT explosives on the basis of the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique, in both air and argon (Ar) atmospheres. The plasma emissions of the prepared samples were recorded, where the atomic lines of Al, C, O and H as well as the molecular bands of AlO, CN and C2 were identified. A good discrimination and separation between the samples was possible using LIBS and principle component analysis (PCA), although they had similar atomic compositions. The quantitative calibration curve obtained using the relative intensity of Al/O was used to determine the detonation velocity/pressure and aluminum content of the TNT/Al samples. Comparisons between experimental and theoretical spectra were made using a Nelder–Mead temperature program for CN bands, which provided good agreement with the fitted spectra. Finally, CN vibrational temperatures were calculated from these spectral fittings. These temperatures have higher values in an Ar atmosphere than in an air atmosphere. Thus, increasing the oxygen concentration can decrease these temperatures in TNT/Al standard samples.

Mineralogical and chemical investigation of prostate glands removed after surgical operation were performed. Higher concentration of some elements were determined at changed larger prostate glands. This phenomenon is result of substitution of elements into biological structures of glans because mineral grains or crystals were not observed. Mentioned mineralization is probably the result of higher mineralization of urine flow through prostate.

The research results concerning microstructure and chemical composition of selected post-processed poultry beddings derived from industrial-scale poultry breeding are presented. It was found, that the proper trend is providing the optimal conditions in respect to bred-animals comfort. The highest concentration of biogenic elements — especially nitrogen and potassium — was observed for the samples of poultry manure premixed with the straw. High quality of bedding biomass influences the inhibition of poultry-manure decomposition processes advantageously. In effect, biogas yield increases (due to C/N adjustment), in spite of the fact that increase in ammonium nitrogen concentration simultaneously inhibits the methane fermentation process.

The Morasko Meteorite nature reserve is located in Morasko, on the northern edge of the city of Poznań, Poland. In this area the biggest known in Central Europe iron meteorite fall occurred. New mineral phases Moraskoite Na2Mg(PO4)F and Czochralskiite Na4Ca3Mg(PO4)4 have been discovered in the Morasko Meteorite. Both are phosphates, which exist as a parts of nodules – oval inclusions which occur in some iron meteorites, including the Morasko Meteorite. This paper describes the results of our investigation on nodules separated from the Morasko meteorite. Among others, the silicates in form of pyroxene from clinoenstatite group and olivines from forsterite group were found. The presence of phosphates in the form of merrillites was confirmed by electron microprobe analyser. In the metallic parts, on contact between kamacite and taenite crystals, rims (lammelas) composed of tetrataenite were detected. This phase is known to have hard-magnetic properties and could be used as cheaper equivalent for commonly used compounds based on rare earth elements for permanent magnets production.

This article is the second part of the review of the studies on nutrition in Polish preschool children. In the first part, studies on preschool menus assessment were presented and summarised, whereas this article reviews the studies on the assessment of foods and meals prepared at preschool. The aim of this review was to present and summarise the results of the studies on the assessment of meals prepared for children at preschool based on the reports from the preschool food storeroom, the studies on chemical analysis of sample meals served at preschools and the studies on comparison of the results of chemical analysis to the results obtained by calculations obtained from computer programmes. The results of the studies on the assessment of meals prepared for children at preschool using various methods confirm most of the findings from the studies on the assessment of preschool menus. It is necessary to carry out more studies on energy and nutrient content assessment of preschool meals determined by chemical analysis of sample meals in order to provide more accurate information about the real nutritional value of meals served to children at preschool. It is essential to update the Polish food composition tables to enable more precise calculations of nutritional value of the meals planned for children at preschools which will improve the possibility of adjusting preschool meals to the real needs of both 3-year-old and 4-6-year-old children during their stay at preschool.
Niniejsza praca jest drugą częścią przeglądu badań dotyczących żywienia polskich dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym. W pierwszej części przedstawiono i podsumowano wyniki prac poświęconych ocenie jadłospisów przedszkolnych. Należy prowadzić więcej badań dotyczących oceny zawartości energii i składników pokarmowych w przedszkolnych posiłkach na podstawie analizy chemicznej, aby uzyskać bardziej dokładne informacje odnośnie rzeczywistej wartości odżywczej posiłków serwowanych dzieciom w przedszkolach.

Opis:
Thermal power plants (TPP) belong to the enterprises that accompany the development of any city. These industrial facilities consume and discharge large amounts of water. Therefore, thermal power plants are often located near water bodies that need to assess their ecological state and predict the consequences of the anthropogenic impact. The purpose of the work was to assess the ecological state of the floodplain Lake Ivanovskoye (Russia, Kirov region), which receives the wastewater from a thermal power plant, using a triadic approach and comparing the results of chemical analysis, bioassay and bioindication. It was shown that the main pollutant in the lake and the canal connecting Lake Ivanovskoye with the nearest river Vyatka is ammonium ion (up to 3.2 mg/dm3). In addition, the Russian standards for biological oxygen consumption are exceeded (analysis period is 20 days). The tests for the toxicity of wastewater showed inhibition of Paramecium caudatum and Escherichia coli reactions. In contrast, natural surface water from Lake Ivanovskoye stimulated the test functions of Scenedesmus quadricauda, P. caudatum, and E. coli. The death of Daphnia magna in the samples were not recorded. The totality of the facts pointed to the organic nature of pollution, leading to the anthropogenic eutrophication of the lake. The hypothesis was tested by using the bioindication method and by analyzing the totality of species of coastal aquatic plants. It was shown that the reservoir belongs to the mesotrophic type with a moderate degree of pollution, which decreases with distance from the wastewater discharge points. The increase in the trophicity of the reservoir is facilitated by thermal pollution (up to +15℃) and an alkaline pH of wastewater (up to 9.2). Thus, the joint analysis of the results of chemical analysis, bioassay and bioindication made it possible to carry out an objective assessment of the ecological state of the reservoir and identify the reasons for the revealed facts.
