This paper examines the misperceptions about the Russian-Chechen conflicts, trends of which can be observed in the Western media and academia. The first section investigates issues related to Islamic fundamentalism in Chechnya, while the second section looks into discussion about the roots of the conflict. The third section is devoted to the issue of brutality - the most debated topic in the Western media. I argue that an overarching misperception about the Chechen conflict was caused not only by Russian propaganda, but also by the inherent attitude prevailing in the West. This attitude should be understood in the framework of Orientalism as was explained by Edward Said.

Wielonarodowość Federacji Rosyjskiej bezpośrednio wpływa na kształtowanie polityki wobec poszczególnych podmiotów Federacji Rosyjskiej, a w szczególności na relacje pomiędzy władzą a poszczególnymi narodowościami. Należy podkreślić, iż w literaturze przedmiotu możemy odnaleźć informacje, w świetle których Federację Rosyjską zamieszkuje ponad sto narodów i narodowości1. Tak ukształtowana struktura narodowościowa Federacji Rosyjskiej przekłada się również na wielowyznaniowość. Znaczący wpływ na kształtowanie się procesów społeczno-politycznych w tym wielonarodowym państwie ma poczucie przynależności do poszczególnych wspólnot wyznaniowych. Większość przedstawicieli narodowości rosyjskiej, ukraińskiej i białoruskiej na terytorium Federacji Rosyjskiej wykazują przynależność do prawosławnej współtony wyznaniowej. Drugą pod względem liczby wyznawców religią jest islam. Główne ośrodki muzułmańskie mieszczą się na dokonanie analizy procesów zachodzących w środowiskach muzułmańskich.
The Russian Federation is a multinational state with significant religious diversity. The Muslim population is the second largest religious community in the country. The geostrategically important areas of the Russian Federation habitated by the followers of Islam make it a key issue to expose the place and role of the Muslim population in the socio-political life of the Russian Federation. This article attempts to verify the following theses: first, from a geopolitical point of view of the Russian Federation territory, inhabited by the followers of Islam, there are areas extremely important; secondly - reislamization of the social life and increase of political influence of Islam in the regions of the Russian Federation pose a threat to the establishment and development of radical Islamic movements.

The purpose of this article is to present the genesis of the Chechen-Russian conflict, including the genocide of Chechens. The analysis explains how the aggressive actions of the Russian authorities were supposed to deal with “the strongest and most dangerous nation” of the Caucasus, in order to subjugate this region. Russian behaviour proves that their priority over the centuries was not an assimilation of Chechens and the peaceful solution of the conflict, but rather an “imperial” dimension of the strife, or to be exact, the ultimate conquest of the Caucasus, even if it would mean the extermination of the Chechen nation.

Opis:
Incorporating aquatic motifs into his novel Pathologies, Zakhar Prilepin ascribes different functions to them. Firstly, in ‘Chechen story’, water takes the form of rain that constitutes an ordinary, thought irritating, atmospheric phenomenon. However, when the young protagonists fight under siege in Chechnya, water acquires a symbolic meaning, becoming a dire portent of death. In the final scenes, set in Chechnya, water changes its connotation and saves the survivor Russian soldier’s lives. Besides, water plays in Prilepin’s novel (Epilogue) the role of catharsis: it is the river’s water where the author is reborn and ‘baptized’ so that soul was purified of the past sins related to upbringing and care for his adoptive son.

This article analyzes geopolitical importance of Chechnya for the Russian Federation. It is concentrated on a few problems: provision of human rights, the problems of stability in region, international terrorism, energy security and separatist activities contrasted with Russia’s Imperial Policy. The Russian Federation strives to maintain its presence in North Caucasus (especially Chechnya) – it’s one of the most important prorities of the Russia’s foreign policy.

Sovereignty issues in the Caucasus: contested ethnic and national identities in Chechnya, Abkhazia, and South OssetiaThe issue of sovereignty has been at the forefront of regional politics in the Caucasus since the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. In particular, the Russian government has approached various-seemingly similar cases-in very different ways. Although each specific region examined-Chechnya, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia-is unique, the nature of ethnic and national identity has been framed differently by the Russian government. In Chechnya, the Putin administration has framed any outstanding separatist claims in conjunction with terrorism and national security issues. In Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the Putin administration has instead noted the need for “liberation.” The outcome has been to stifle secessionist desires in Chechnya, while supporting those same secessionist desires outside of Russia’s borders, in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Kwestia suwerenności na Kaukazie: kontestowane tożsamości etniczne i narodowe w Czeczenii, Abchazji i Osetii PołudniowejKwestia suwerenności wysunęła się na czołowe miejsce w polityce regionalnej na Kaukazie z chwilą rozpadu Związku Sowieckiego w 1991 roku. W istocie rząd rosyjski do poszczególnych, pozornie podobnych, przypadków podszedł w odmienny sposób. Aczkolwiek każdy z interesujących nas tutaj regionów – Czeczenia, Abchazja i Osetia Południowa – jest unikatowy, to charakter tożsamości etnicznej i narodowej został ujęty przez rząd rosyjski w inne ramy. W Czeczenii administracja Putina wiązała wysuwane tam roszczenia separatystyczne z terroryzmem i kwestiami bezpieczeństwa narodowego. Z kolei w Abchazji i Osetii Południowej Rosja dostrzegła potrzebę „wyzwolenia”. W efekcie nastąpiło stłumienie aspiracji do secesji w Czeczenii, podczas gdy poza granicami Rosji, w Abchazji i Osetii Południowej, te same dążenia secesjonistyczne zyskały sobie poparcie.

Russia is a state with a multi-ethnic federal structure inherited from the USSR. Implementing an ethnic policy that would unite and integrate its citizens is one of its most important goals. Among Russia’s federal subjects are also national republics pursuing their own ethno-political concepts, either conciliatory or conflictual. Tatarstan and Chechnya are examples of such republics. With the use of the comparative method, the article is an attempt at demonstrating many factors that have an impact on the shaping and implementing of the ethnic policy through such criteria as the status of the republics, the concept of the nation, and ethnocentrism, historical memory, the role of Islam and its politicization, and the language policy. The article also outlines their consequences and possible future scenarios.

Debiutancka powieść Zachara Prilepina Patologie to pierwsze pozycja literatury pięknej opisująca wojnę w Czeczenii, przy czym z perspektywy uczestnika wydarzeń. Główny bohater, Jegor Taszewski, to alter ego pisarza. Kompozycja utworu oparta jest na trzech liniach: wspomnieniach protagonisty z dzieciństwa, historii jego związku z ukochaną oraz opisie wydarzeń i przeżyć wojennych. W powieści rysuje się podwójny obraz świata, uzyskany nie tylko dzięki połączeniu obecnych zdarzeń ze reminiscencjami z czasów pokoju jako dwóch części życia jednego człowieka. Mamy tu do czynienia z kontrastem brutalności ze zmysłowością, sacrum  przeplata się z profanum, rozmowy o Bogu mieszają z opisami żołnierskich problemów żołądkowych. Celem artykułu jest pokazanie ambiwalencji świata w powieści, stawiającej w opozycji piękno i brzydotę, śmiech i powagę, życie i śmierć, wielkość i nikczemność.
The first novel by Zakhar Prilepin Pathologies is the first literary work describing the war in Chechnya, written by a participant in the events. The main character, Jegor Taszewski, is the alter ego of the writer. The composition of the book is based on three lines: the memories of the protagonist's childhood, the story of his relationship with his beloved Dasha, and the description of the events and experiences of war. A double image of the world, not only achieved by a combination of current events with reminiscences from the times of peace as two parts of the life of one man, is shown in the novel. We are dealing with a brutal contrast with sensuality, sacred mixes with profane, talks about God adjacent descriptions of soldier diarrhea. This article aims to show the ambivalence of the world in the novel, putting in opposition beauty and ugliness, laughter and seriousness, life and death, greatness and wickedness.

Opis:
The main purpose of my work is to present the determinants and dependencies that characterize the Russian-Chechen relations for international political and economic security in the former Soviet Union and the Middle East, especially the Russian Federation. At the beginning, I intend to trace the process of the Chechen war and consolidate the power of the current leader of the country, Ramzan Kadyrov with the help of the President Russia, Vladimir Putin. At the same time, I will present the geopolitical significance of Chechnya in the international security system. In the following, I would like to present the implications of Russian-Chechen relations for other countries of the former USSR area- Ukraine, where in all probability Chechen “volunteers” participated in the fighting in Donbas. Finally, an important element of this work will be signaling, that President Kadyrov, despite aware of the Kremlin’s dependence on many matters, especially in economic terms, is starting to pursue an increasingly independent policy, as exemplified by the growing islamization of Chechnya, the participation of Chechen the Syrian conflict, Kadyrov active participation in the persecution of the Russian opposition, and finally the defense by the Chechen policy of the Muslim population of Rohingya in Myanmar against Moscow abstemious position. I would like to present the possible consequences of the above actions for the Russian Federation. It is not a secret that President Putin, despite the declared support for Kadyrov, is increasingly disapproving of some of his actions. In addition, it will be reasonable to present the reception of Kadyrov’s activities in other post-Soviet areas. In summary, I intend to answer the question whether major changes in the relations of both countries should be expected – and whether and how any changes will affect the architecture of international security.
Главная цель моей работы – это представление обусловленности и зависимости, характеризующих российско-чеченские отношения для международной политической и экономической безопасности на территории бывшего Советского Союза, Ближнего Востока, а особенно Российской Федерации. Сначала я намереваюсь проследить процесс чеченской войны и укрепление власти нынешнего главы республики Рамзана Кадырова с помощью президента России Владимира Путина. Одновременно я представлю геополитическое значение Чечни в международной системе безопасности. Далее я хотел бы представить последствия российско-чеченских отношений для других стран постсоветского пространства, например, для Украины, где вероятнее всего чеченские «добровольцы» участвовали в боях в Донбассе. И, наконец, важным элементом данной работы будет постановка тезиса, что президент Кадыров, несмотря на осознаваемую зависимость от Кремля во многих сферах, особенно в экономическом плане, начинает вести все более самостоятельную политику, примером чего является возрастающая исламизация Чечни, участие чеченцев в конфликте в Сирии, активное участие Кадырова в преследовании российской оппозиции и, наконец, защита чеченским политиком мусульманского населения рохинджа в Бирме вопреки сдержанной позиции Москвы. Я хотел бы представить возможные последствия вышеупомянутых действий для Российской Федерации. Не секрет, что президент Путин, невзирая на декларируемую поддержку для Кадырова, все с меньшим одобрением смотрит на некоторые его начинания. Кроме того, сообразным будет представить восприятие действий Кадырова в других странах постсоветского пространства. Подводя итоги, я попытаюсь ответить на вопрос, следует ли ожидать существенных изменений в российско-чеченских взаимоотношениях, а также или и какие возможные изменения повлияют на структуру международной безопасности?
